206 Classroom Management Philosophy I will create a safe environment where all students will be comfortable, organized, and responsible. Students will learn to be respectful of themselves, others and the school as well. In my opinion, having consistency in a school is extremely important. Jerome Freiberg believed in consistency management and cooperative discipline, which encourages cooperation, participation and support. I feel that it is so crucial for students to have consistency in their education because when rules and procedures are changed constantly, it can be hard for children to grasp all of the changes. Along with Forrest Gathercoal, I also think that teaching children democracy, and overall fairness is helpful. Finally, as a teacher, I know that demeaning students will not help them reach their full potential, which is why I agree with Richard Curwin and Allen Mendler and their theory of disciplining with dignity. In my classroom democracy will play a huge role. We will have class meetings where we, together, will decide rules and privileges. Student input matters to me, and I know that involving children will help with the community environment I hope to create. I also will work toward long-term behavior changes, and not just quick fixes. For example, in class the students will have colored behavioral cards that will be changed and recorded on a daily basis to track progress.
