Introduo O Halloween uma festa comemorativa celebrada todo ano no dia 31 de outubro, vspera do dia de Todos os Santos. Ela realizada em grande parte dos pases

ocidentais, porm mais representativa nosEstados Unidos. Neste pas, levada pelos imigrantes irlandeses, ela chegou em meados do sculo XIX. Histria do Dia das Bruxas A histria desta data comemorativa tem mais de 2500 anos. Surgiu entre o povo celta, que acreditavam que no ltimo dia do vero (31 de outubro), os espritos saiam dos cemitrios para tomar posse dos corpos dos vivos. Para assustar estes fantasmas, os celtas colocavam, nas casas, objetos assustadores como, por exemplo, caveiras, ossos decorados, abboras enfeitadas entre outros. Por ser uma festa pag foi condenada na Europa durante a Idade Mdia, quando passou a ser chamada de Dia das Bruxas. Aqueles que comemoravam esta data eram perseguidos e condenados fogueira pela Inquisio. Com o objetivo de diminuir as influncias pags na Europa Medieval, a Igreja cristianizou a festa, criando o Dia de Finados (2 de novembro). Smbolos e Tradies Esta festa, por estar relacionada em sua origem morte, resgata elementos e figuras assustadoras. So smbolos comuns desta festa: fantasmas, bruxas, zumbis, caveiras, monstros, gatos negros e at personagens como Drcula e Frankestein. As crianas tambm participam desta festa. Com a ajuda dos pais, usam fantasias assustadoras e partem de porta em porta na vizinhana, onde soltam a frase doura ou travessura. Felizes, terminam a noite do 31 de outubro, com sacos cheios de guloseimas, balas, chocolates e doces. Halloween no Brasil No Brasil a comemorao desta data recente. Chegou ao nosso pas atravs da grande influncia da cultura americana, principalmente vinda pela televiso. Os cursos de lngua inglesa tambm colaboram para a propagao da festa em territrio nacional, pois valorizao e comemoram esta data com seus alunos: uma forma de vivenciar com os estudantes a cultura norte-americana. Muitos brasileiros defendem que a data nada tem a ver com nossa cultura e, portanto, deveria ser deixada de lado. Argumentam que o Brasil tem um rico folclore que deveria ser mais valorizado. Para tanto, foi criado pelo governo, em 2005, o Dia do Saci (comemorado tambm em 31 de outubro).

This October 31st holidaybegan over 2000 years ago in what is now Ireland and Europe. It grew out of a Celtic celebration called Samhain (pronounced sow-en). People tried to make contact with friendly spirits of the dead, who were often seen as sources of guidance. Many people wore masks made of animal heads and skins to frighten off evil spirits. It was thought that the spirits of the dead required food and drink. So, during the festival people would leave various articles of food outside to appease the spirits. The sprits would go door-to-door demanding the best food and wine. If none were given, a hungry and possibly irritated spirit might enter the house and cause trouble for the home dwellers. Sacred bonfires were very important during the fiery festival. They provided light against the growing darkness and evil spirits. As the celebration ended, families carried home embers from the fire to relight their hearth fires. The Jack-O-Lantern is said to have come from this age-old practice of carrying home embers in hollowedout turnips. In an Irish folk tale, a man named Jack once escaped the devil with a turnip lantern. When the Irish came to America, Jacks turnip was exchanged for the more easily carved pumpkin.
