Boffins who noticed certain Australian beetles will try to have sex with discarded beer bottles have won a scientific prize. Entomologists Professor Darryl Gwynne and David Rentz were awarded the Ig Nobel Prize for their discovery about buprestid Beetles. Theyd discovered the male beetle would try to mate with beer bottles -- but only brown ones with bobbly bits on them. This was enough to bag the boffins the Ig Nobel Prize, which celebrates research which makes you laugh and then think. Other winners on the night included the team who devised a wasabi fire alarm for deaf people and a group who looked at why discus throwers get dizzy. The winners in full: PHYSIOLOGY PRIZE: Anna Wilkinson for the study No Evidence of Contagious Yawning in the Red-Footed Tortoise. CHEMISTRY PRIZE: Shiga University for determining the ideal density of airborne wasabi (pungent horseradish) to awaken sleeping people in case of a fire or other emergency, and for applying this knowledge to invent the wasabi alarm. MEDICINE PRIZE: Two teams who demonstrated that people make better decisions about some kinds of things but worse decisions about other kinds of things when they have a strong urge to urinate. PSYCHOLOGY PRIZE: Karl Halvor Teigen of the University of Oslo for trying to understand why, in everyday life, people sigh. LITERATURE PRIZE: John Perry of Stanford University, for his Theory
of Structured Procrastination, which says: To be a high achiever, always work on something important, using it as a way to avoid doing something thats even more important. BIOLOGY PRIZE: Darryl Gwynne and David Rentz for discovering that a certain kind of beetle mates with a certain kind of Australian beer bottle PHYSICS PRIZE: Philippe Perrin and colleagues for determining why discus throwers become dizzy, and why hammer throwers dont. MATHEMATICS PRIZE: Dorothy Martin of the USA (who predicted the world would end in 1954), Pat Robertson of the USA (who predicted the world would end in 1982), Elizabeth Clare Prophet of the USA (who predicted the world would end in 1990), Lee Jang Rim of KOREA (who predicted the world would end in 1992), Credonia Mwerinde of UGANDA (who predicted the world would end in 1999), and Harold Camping of the USA (who predicted the world would end on September 6, 1994 and later predicted that the world will end on October 21, 2011), for teaching the world to be careful when making mathematical assumptions and calculations. PEACE PRIZE: Arturas Zuokas, the mayor of Vilnius, LITHUANIA, for demonstrating that the problem of illegally parked luxury cars can be solved by running them over with an armored tank. PUBLIC SAFETY PRIZE: John Senders of the University of Toronto, for conducting a series of safety experiments in which a person drives an automobile on a major highway while a visor repeatedly flaps down over his face, blinding him.

A bread fit for consumption by the likes of that famous Philistine, Goliath, or maybe even vegetable icon, the Green Giant, a local guru in China is claiming the record for creating the worlds largest naan. A chef from Qiemo County, Xinjiang Autonomous Region, China named Memeti, four apprentices and 12 helpers needed a total of 12 hours to create the popular Indian flat bread, which is traditionally cooked in a clay oven or tandoor. City bosses in Caracas, the Venezuelan capital, have come up with an odd way of dealing with road chaos -- theyve employed 120 mimes to enforce traffic rules. Officials in the municipality of Sucre say most drivers had little regard for the rules and something needed to be done about it. As such the 120 mimes will now spend their days silently wagging their fingers and pulling faces at motorists who are breaking the rules. Its hoped drivers will react better to mimes than they do to traditional traffic enforcement officers and as a result start driving better. Mayor Carlos Ocariz says the scheme will stay in effect until the mimes have had the desired impact hopefully irate drivers wont impact on the mimes. The coffers of taxpayer money were utilized to build a huge chopping board and massive 19-foot wide oven to make the worlds largest naan a reality. Estimated to be large enough to feed 10,000 people, the 9-foot diameter naan is stuffed with meat dumplings and made with 66 pounds of mutton, 275 pounds of flour and 35 pounds of onions! Some locals were not happy to see where their hard-earned tax dollars were going, especially in times of such economic hardship, but the local government stands behind the development of their giant project. The creation of this giant bread became a source of local pride and at the same time fed the whole village and then some. Just pull up a chair and take a slice. What else can you do? Check out this interesting video illustrating how naan is made.
Momma Mia! A woman in Glasgow says she woke up woke up with an Italian accent after suffering a stroke. Debbie McCann couldnt speak straight away after the stroke and when her voice came back people said it sounded Chinese. But after a while it became more Italian-sounding -- and 48-year-old Debbie says people are now constantly asking her where shes from. Its thought she could be suffering from Foreign Accent Syndrome, a rare condition thought to affect just 60 people around the world. Debbie says the condition is so bad shes embarrassed to speak to
people it must have been a while since she called for a takeaway pizza. The grandmother added that shes never been to either China or Italy.

A surprising number of British adults are scared of the dark, it has been found. Researchers found around four out of ten of us (thats nearly 20 million British adults) are fearful of wandering around the house with the lights off. Watching a scary movie, being home alone and hearing strange noises in the middle of the night are cited as the biggest causes of the irrational fear. It also emerged one in ten people are so scared of the dark they wouldnt even get up for the toilet once all the lights are out. And one in ten parents would prefer to let the children fend for themselves in the night-time than get up to see what was wrong. The study also revealed one fifth of British adults will leave a bedside lamp or landing light on at night time so that they can see if they should wake up. But a third chooses to sleep with a phone on their nightstand so they can phone someone in the middle of the night if they suddenly get scared. The biggest worry for those scared of the dark is quite simply the fact they cant see anything, while 45 per cent say it is the fear of the unexpected. But a fifth of imaginative adults fully expect to wake to monsters or ghosts in the middle of a very dark night. Lucy Wynn Jones for GoGlow.co.uk, which conducted the study of 2,000 adults said: We naturally assume that it is just children who have a fear of the dark, but perhaps more inexplicably, many adults do as well. It is perhaps easier to understand why kids might be frightened of the dark, as they are more susceptible to nightmares, have very active imaginations and may be exposed to childrens television programmes about monsters and ghosts.
A woman responsible for testing the comfort and quality of beds for a hotel chain is having her bottom insured for 4 million. Natalie Thomas -- who can spent eight hours per day bouncing on beds -- says her rear is so sensitive it helps her detecting lumps and inconsistencies. Charged with leading a team to ensure the quality of 46,000 Premier Inn bed, the 39-year-old from Bedfordshire (really) has been given the job title Director of Bed Bouncing. Natalie says she wears soft trousers so she can feel even the smallest lump or bump in a mattress and takes extra special care of her derriere, with regular moisturising sessions and being careful not to wear any hard wearing materials. Speaking yesterday Natalie said: The quality of beds is hugely important and is something Premier Inn pride ourselves on. I absolutely love my job and really cant imagine doing anything else now. I work with an excellent team of bouncers and we work together to bounce on every part of the bed, before testing how comfortable it is to lie and sleep on. Whilst we have lots of fun bouncing on beds, we take our job very seriously as making sure every guest gets a good nights sleep is of paramount importance to us all. Natalie and her team test on average 884 beds a week, around 177 a day taking up to 20 minutes on each bed. They check for lumps, bumps, rips, tears and stains and faulty beds or mattresses are removed that day.
Revelers at Germanys Oktoberfest have consumed more beer than ever before -- with a massive 7.5 million litres being knocked back at the famous event. 6.9 million visitors are said to have attended the 17-day event in Munich -- many having donned traditional Bavarian lederhosen for the occasion. Once there it was all about the beer and food. In addition to the the beer, bosses say hundreds of thousands of sausages and roast chickens were eaten. And this year brawls were at a record low -- only 58 fights saw drinkers wielding their Masskrugs (litre beer glasses) as weapons... which is apparently and improvement on previous years. 4 BuGils Bi-Weekly - Issue #43 - October 19, 2011

Hi People!
Usually Im at home reclining in bed as I write this but tonight Im sitting at the bar. I bought a really cheap much smaller computer so I can do some computing at the bar and not seem as if Im hiding behind a big screen. The battery on this thing lasts forever compared to my larger laptop. I am sitting by the Margarita machine and watching all these jugs of cold beer being served and thinking how tasty one of those would be so I mixed myself a virgin Bloody Mary. Im trying to lose some weight and read somewhere how tomato juice curbs your craving for alcohol. Wonder if tomato juice is less fattening than beer? So it turns out tomato juice has about 75 calories in 12oz and Heineken has 166 calories in 12oz. Surprisingly Guinness has fewer calories than Heineken at 125. Yum. So far this newsletter really sucks but Im still truly amazed at how long the battery lasts on this cheap ass computer. And it cost less than my hand phone. I think the battery on this computer lasts longer than my hand phone. Oh crap, theres some really drunk guy at the bar. Let me get a picture of him Yeah, Im pretty sure all he can do is say Hey! right now. Im also pretty sure thats how I must have been on several occasions over the past 3+ years, but then again I wouldnt remember. Im not one of those kinds of guys who just sips on a beer or 3 over the night. I like my beer while its still icy cold. And the second beer doesnt taste as good as the first one does but after a while each additional beer starts tasting twice as good as the last. Then you start thinking Brainwash tastes good and then you walk around the bar yelling Hey! at everybody thinking you just told the funniest joke in the world. Rock and roll music is the theme of De Hooi. Or alternative. So Ive been gradually trying to get rid of all this crappy new R&B the kids want to hear. Save that crap for some other place Id rather not go. Times they are a changing but I plan on keeping De Hooi the same as it was. Hurts my ears that new stuff. Every now and then maybe a song or two.Sounds like someone going to the bathroom after a while. Erase it from my playlist whenever I find it on there. Nice to get back to the basics. Utterly repulses me on some nights. Too many places already play that hip hop music. Spell out the first letter of each sentence. Once again Ive managed to say absolutely nothing. Wish I had something for you but I just dont. Wait, maybe I can find something worth telling you: Replacing red meat and dairy with chicken, fish or eggs in your diet for one day each week reduces emissions equal to 760 miles per year of driving. And there you go. Thanks for making De Hooi Southern Jakartas favorite Rock n Roll joint. Cheers,
Harry

Walkers World of Wit
It turns out that theres a scientific and logical explanation for why people (mostly men) spend so much time in pubs and only get home in the early hours of the morning. The reason for this odd behavior is based on Einsteins famous Relativity Theory. It works like this: It is a well-known fact that the more you drink, the faster you move. After about 8 beers (or 4 double brandies & coke, etc), youre moving at close to the speed of light, and this is where Einstein enters the picture. According to his Relativity Theory, anybody moving at, or close to the speed of light, undergoes Time Dilation, i.e. time for you in the pub passes slower than for an observer outside the pub. Complicated calculations have shown that the pub becomes a type of time machine:- for every half-hour spent inside the pub, something like two hours pass outside the pub. A typical situation is: OK guys, its 8 oclock, Im gonna surprise the family and get home early!! However, the moment this person steps outside the pub, the time travel effect is negated by negative radiation from the environment, and he/she then goes: Why is it so quiet?? OMG!!! Its half past one!! WHAT HAPPENED???!!?? .and the answer, of course, is Time Dilation!! Ive tried to explain this to outside observers, but so far nobody (except Fellow time travellers) have been able or willing to understand the sound Scientific basis of this phenomenon. Please forward this to all your known time travellers - maybe we can prove this theory by sheer, overwhelming force of numbers.
