Conncurrent Disk Drive Replacement


This section is designed to instruct on how to replace a disk concurrently without shutting down the system. The two types of disk replacement procedures this section focuses on are disks that are the following configurations Parity Sets Mirrored Protection Disk Replacement on a parity set The first step in any disk replacement is to first analyze the error logs to see which disk is failed Start System Service Tool (STRSST) to begin the replacement Sign in to SST if running on Version 5 Release 1 or newer Confirm the current status by performing the following From the SST main menu select option 3 Work With Disk Units From the Work With Disk Units main menu select option 1 Display Disk Configuration From the Display Disk Configuration main menu select option 1 Display Disk Configuration Status The Display Disk Configuration Status screen will display the current status of all configured disk. Any failed disk in the parity set will display DPY/Failed Using the F9 key the screen can be toggled displaying more information regarding the disk locations in the system Once disk location has been identified Device Concurrent Maintenance can be started Using the F12 key exit the screens until back at the SST main menu Once back at the SST main menu select option 1 Start a Service Tool From the Start a Service Tool main menu select option 7 Hardware Service Manager From the Hardware Service Manager main menu select option 8 Device Concurrent Maintenance From the Device Concurrent Maintenance menu enter the frame id and location of the disk that will be replaced. Also on the screen select to remove the device. A time delay can also be specified Once the disk begins to flash remove it from the system. Before inserted a new disk rerun the device concurrent maintenance and enter the same frame id and location. This time instead of removing the device specify that you would to install a device After the disk has been physically replaced the rebuild procedure can be started Using the F12 key exit until back at the SST main menu Select option 3 Work With Disk Units From the Work With Disk Units main menu select option 3 Work with Disk Unit Recovery

From the Disk Unit Recovery main menu select option 6 Rebuild Disk Unit Data Once the rebuild begins no further action is needed
