The Wildlife Committee is sponsoring Snakes of Central Virginia for all ages at 7PM on Wed., Oct. 26, in the Terrace Room. The Committee welcomes Master Naturalist Bill Feeney, who will present a 30minute program with a wealth of information on snake behavior and snake identification. All welcome. BOARD OF DIRECTORS OCTOBER MEETING: The Board will hold its regular monthly meeting on Thurs., Oct. 27. The meeting will be called to order at 6PM and go immediately into executive session in the Terrace Board Room to discuss legal, contract and personnel matters. BUDGET DOCUMENTS ON WEBSITE: Posted this week are first drafts (as of Oct. 15) of the 2012 operating budget by the Finance Committee, reflecting input from the General Manager, Staff and several committees. Also new on the website is a list of questions and comments (as of Oct. 15) about the 2012 budget that may be of interest to members and guide discussions during the budget development process. FROM THE BOARD . . . In June, the Board of Directors established a subcommittee to study and make recommendations for removing the leaf pile at Tufton Pond and alternatives for leaf disposal. The subcommittee, chaired by Steve Carney, will present options and give recommendation(s) to the Board in November. The leaf collection program at Tufton Lake is DEFUNCT, and residents can no longer take leaves at that location. The subcommittee is studying the feasibility of a lake-wide leaf composting program, but for now, residents are urged to compost their own leaves. Furthermore, residents are reminded that SDI will accept up to five bags of leaves per household as part of the weekly trash pickup. When bagging leaves, please remember: Leaves must be bagged and tied. Place bags into the cart if there is space. Other bags should be placed at least two feet away. The cart must be present for bags to be collected so the driver can hoist the bags into the truck. Adhering to these procedures will speed up trash collection, simplify procedures for the trash company and the recycler, and keep trash collection costs low for LMOA. NEW VOTER CARDS BEING SENT TO VOTERS AFFECTED BY LOCAL REDISTRICTING: The Fluvanna Registrars Office and Virginia State Board of Elections will soon begin sending new voter information cards to voters whose voting district and polling place have changed due to local redistricting. When you receive your new card, destroy your old card, as it will no longer be valid. If your district and polling place have changed and you do not get your new card, call the Fluvanna Registrar at 589-3593. Voters whose district and/or polling place have not been changed will not get new cards. LAKE MONTICELLO FIREHOUSE NO LONGER A POLLING PLACE: The Fluvanna Electoral Board urges Lake Monticello voters to verify the location of their polling place prior to Election Day by 1) calling the State Board of Elections at 1-800-5529745; 2) going to the State Board of Elections website at www.sbe.virginia.gov; 3) going to the Fluvanna website at www.co.fluvanna.va.us and clicking on digital mapping under voting districts and entering their address; or 4) calling the Fluvanna Registrar at 589-3593. INFORMATION FOR FUVANNA VOTERS: The League of Women Voters of Fluvanna County has published two nonpartisan documents of importance to voters. Election 2011: Important Redistricting Information is a card about voting generally, deadlines, contacts and the effects of redistricting on Fluvanna County voters. 2011 Voters Guide gives information about the candidates for contested state and local elections. Both are available in the Clubhouse lobby and other locations around the county. FLUVANNA REASSESSMENT KICK-OFF MEETINGS: The Fluvanna Board of Supervisors (FBOS) has set the next general reassessment to be effective Jan. 1, 2013. Appraisers will begin visiting properties this fall. LOOKING FOR MEANINGFUL COMMUNITY SERVICE? Now that summer is over and activity is slowing, please consider volunteering to serve your community. LMOA has permanent operating and advisory committees and ad hoc committees that could benefit from your time and talents. Each year at this time, permanent committees begin searching for qualified candidates to fill vacancies that will occur at the end of the year. At any time, LMOA members may submit Committee Resource Forms on which they can indicate their volunteer interests. The forms are kept on file for reference when vacancies occur; however, at this time to year, there usually is a shortage of applicants. Now is the time to apply to be considered for committee appointment. Fill out and return a Committee Resource Form to the LMOA Office. THE GOLF COMMITTEE IS SEEKING APPLICANTS: This is an advisory committee that assists the Board, Golf Professional and General Manager in ensuring a strong and enjoyable golf program for all. GOLF NEWS Sun., Oct. 23: FREE DEMO ON SNAG, which is Starting New at Golf, a program for children ages 5 to 9 years. The demo will run 12N through 2PM at the golf course. Just show up anytime during that time. Sun., Oct. 30: Pumpkin Scramble: 10AM shotgun start, four-person captains choice. Sign up individually at the Pro Shop; the Pro Shop will pair up the teams.
