MANAGEMENT LESSOND FROM SACHIN TENDULKAR

greatest cricketer in the history, the record holder of 99th cricket centuries Sachin Tendulkar can teach you even more than Harvard School of Business. Game of cricket is as challenging as any top career or business. And who else can teach you better, to swim through the tide of obstacles successfully and win, than the maestro himself. 1. DEVELOP A FIRE OF PURPOSE: There is one quality which one must possess to win, and that is definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants, and a burning desire to possess it. These words of Napoleon Hill clearly define the personality of Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin had a purpose to make it big in cricket before he joined the team. The fire was so strong that no hurdle could stop him. His attitude was positive and the heart unwavering. When asked by a journalist Sachin told that his purpose was to become worlds number one cricketer. The fire of great purpose compelled him to work very hard with complete dedication. 2. WORK HARDER TO BE PERFECT When Sachin Tendulkar touched the milestone of 35th century to create history Sunil Gavaskar (previous record holder of 34th test centuries) described him the closest thing to batting perfection the game has seen. Sachin got an immortal place in world cricket with an attitude to enjoy hard work and aim for perfection. He is totally dedicated to the game, and ready to give his best to the game. And he uses his experience and brain to shine out. Although he is an icon in cricket world yet he is always at the beck and call of his coach and enjoys practice at the net. Pioneer of modern Indian industry billionaire Dhirubhai Ambani also said, If you work with determination and with perfection, success will follow. 3. BE PATIENT IN ADVERSITY The biggest lesson you can learn from the master stroke player is to be patient in adversity. The year 2005 till October 25 was extremely depressive and discouraging for Sachin. No one was able to predict the exact outcome of his elbow injury. He was either performing poorly or out of the team. Many journalists even wrote him off saying that Sachin was a spent force. But Sachin neither bragged nor made any refuting statements. He just kept patience and at the right time showed his mettle to the world becoming the biggest. Like day and night, there are ups and down in the life of a person. If a businessman allows himself to be crushed he is rarely able to cope with the problems successfully. There is always a silver lining in the dark, there is always hope. 4. COMEBACK WITH A BIG FORCE He was declared fit by the doctors before he faced the acid test of his life against the mighty Sri Lanka on 25th October; 05. He mesmerized his fans by wonderful knock of 93 runs. It was a marvelous comeback. So never underestimate the great minds like Sachin Tendulkar. They resurface with a big bang. Whenever you have to make a comeback do it with all the determination you have, almost astonishing others. It will always win the heart of others. It will invoke a deep confidence in your sturdiness and capability. 5. DONT BE OVER-STRESSRED WITH EXPECTATION James Cook said, A person who wants to lead the orchestra must turn his back on the crowd. It is a great business philosophy that Sachin follows diligently. He just concentrates on his game and performance and gets applause from every corner of the world. When you are in charge of

a certain venture there are expectations from others. You are expected to do well, compete successfully, help the company to rise to new heights etc. If you get yourself over-stressed under the weight of expectation you wont be able to perform. During 2005 many times fans and journalists expected Sachin to stage a comeback fast. But he was at ease with himself. He never allowed the expectations of his fans to compel him to take unwise decisions or play foolishly. He tried his best to recover with ease and just got more determined to strike at the right time. 6. LISTEN AND EVALUATE Great Pakistani cricketer Javed Miandad once said that Sachins quality of listening struck him most. While in the same premises Sachin went to Miandad often to take his advice on batting and listened to him attentively. In the same way Sachin always listened to his coaches and seniors. His first coach Ramakant Achrekar also admired his quality of listening carefully and improving. This habit helps him to gain respect, evaluate his technique and make further improvements. Listen to others, evaluate every aspect of your strategy and analyze everything in a right perspective it is a wonderful game plan to proceed faster in career or business. 7. BE HUMBLE AT THE PEAK OF YOUR SUCCESS Due to his trait of humbleness Sachin always won the support of his family, his wife and his friends. His uncle and aunt (his fathers younger brother and his wife) also praised Sachin for his humility and respective attitude. Sachin lived with them for four years in the beginning of his career. You will always find Sachin polite and caring. Although he is the senior most player in the team yet he is easy to handle with by any captain. He has never been reported to have interfered in the management of the team. Neither any captain nor any coach was been rebuffed or misbehaved by Sachin. He not only mixes up with juniors easily but advises them also. When he was requested to relinquish captaincy as he was not performing well he complied. On the contrary an attitude of arrogance and sticking to captaincy at all costs cut down great ex-captain Saurav Ganguly in stature, and he lost captaincy in a very humiliating way. 8. DELEGATE RESPONSIBILITY As soon as Sachin became a cricket-star sponsors started approaching him. It distracted his concentration towards game. He became worried. He discussed about his problem with his friend Ravi Shastri who advised Sachin to delegate this monetary headache to Mark Mascarenhas of World-Tel. Sachin agreed and after that Marks company handled his sponsorship and monetary negotiations fabulously. Free from commercial issues Sachin was able to give most of his time to his real passion cricket. A businessman must understand the value of delegation in business as it keeps his mind focused on the main goal. 9 BE VIGILANT TO OPPORTUNITY Although the world is full of opportunities yet a good opportunity never presents itself again and again. So whenever an opportunity comes grab it with full force. You have to pounce upon it with all your might and resources by hitting fours and sixes. If you fail the opportunity may not come again. You have to keep your eyes open and hold the opportunity hard as soon as it dances before your eyes. Grabbing a good opportunity and building upon it is the secret behind success of most of very successful persons in the history. 10. INVEST IN OTHER VENTURES Sachin is a great cricketer and earns a big money every month. Still he never keeps all the eggs in one basket. In his spare time he works in advertisements. He has also invested money in restaurant business (chain of Tendulkars is famous for tasty food). It ensures a smooth inflow of

cash even if he is unable to earn from cricket for some time due to stroke of misfortune or bad fitness. In the similar way a businessman should invest in other safe ventures too. A young man should keep other careers options open. 11. AVOID DIRTY POLITICS Sachin just minds his own business and uses his maximum time in improving his skills and cricket acumen. Sticking in political gambits consumes too much energy of a player and it affects the performance. He keeps away from dirty politics and concentrates on his performance. You can either play dirty politics or make strategies for a business venture. 12. ALWAYS STRIVE FOR MORE A good businessman never rests on laurels or success. Untiringly he continues to touch new milestones. Sachin has great regard for his first coach Ramakant Achrekar. He inculcated in Sachin the urge and desire to build long innings. He always said, A batsman must never be satisfied. The hunger for runs must be insatiable. Even after touching the milestone of maximum centuries both in one day and test cricket, and making many other world records Sachin Tendulkar is still striving for more and more. A great philosophy for those persons who really want to make it big in any field.
