Develop a chair, sofa, stool design that succeeds in communicating the 21st Century personality and notions of privacy.

This chair is designed based on my own experience as a young girl in the reading room at my local library. Crafted with a rigid back and then covered with an easy to clean durable fabric over plush cushion. The chair would be ideal for children. Because of the base, the chair can be rocked forward making seating easy for young children.

The Location & User

St James Park, Greater London SW1 This park is a high traffic area. It gets tourism visitors as it is located along the mall leading to Buckingham palace. It also brings in people from the adjacent business area who are lunch commuters. There are currently 26 stationary benches within the perimeter of the park.

Further Research

The deck chairs, which are located in all of the royal parks throughout London, are managed by a company called Semnat & Associates. They are responsible for the collection and storage of the chairs during the months of March through October, when they are available to the public for rental. There are a total of 22 staff who work on daily rotations to monitor use and oversee the rental agreements for users. Anyone can go online and set up a rental agreement, however you can also go directly to the park and pay an attendant directly. In 2010 there was a total of 3 deck chairs which were not accounted for by the years end and there were a total of 11 which were removed by staff due to normal wear and use.

After making the first model it became clear that the chair would require not only precision, but also the design would best be represented with a different material. I sent a dwg file to cutlasercut and they were able to produce three models within 24 hours.

Potential Marketing Options

While the YO bench was created with the idea of public use in mind, it is also very possible to market this design as residential furniture item. To do this I would connect with various design magazines and web sites to market my design to a greater population.
