Beta type Stirling Tutorial Design

Engine cylinder

Waqas Ahmad
This tutorial is made using Creo Elements/pro 1.0 all options name will remain same except the appearance and location

Mechanical Engineering 360

1) Open creo elements/ pro 2) Go to File>New>part 3) Select front plane and click at sketch

In sketching window select the circle

Make a circle of radius 4 as shown below

Than press done

After this click at extrude button the program will generate an automatic extrude pre view

Make extrude depth upto 5 and press done . this cylinder will act as a hot cyclinder in our engine design

After making this cylinder select the end surface as shown in the following with green color Go to sketch and than sketch a circle of radius 6

www.mechanical360.net | Mechanical Engineering 360

After making this circle extrude it up to the length 4 and press done. This wll be the cold cylinder of the engine and fins will be made here thats why its diameter should be greater than hot cylinder

Now we have to make empty space for the displacer and piston to move inside the cylinder . for this purpose we have to make a large hole inside this cylinder. To do this click at the surface and go to sketch and make circle of radius 3.4 it mean the hot cylinder will have 0.3 wall thickness.

After making sketch of circle now use extrude to make hole. Take extrude length of 8.60 (total length is 9 so 0.4 will front wall thickness) if extrude doesnt penetrate inside the cylinder then use invert to make it inside and then click at remove material.

Making Finns
Now select right datum plane go into the sketching window

Before doing anything make sure you have change the display to Hidden line from shading (default) It will make ease for you to draw sketch of fins without side effect. Your part should look like this.

Now use rectangle tool to create a rectangular sketch at your cold cylinder. And click done

Now use the revolve tool select the main central axis as reference axis, then click at remove material

This will be the cylinder look like after making this revolve cut

Pattering fin cut

Now we use pattern feature to make fins. Select pattern tool > select direction pattern and use the following configuration as shown in fig if you have change your dimensions than you may have to make it according to your choice

You should make sure your pattern is not going outside the body or too much congested such they just intersect each other

Making Holes
That we may be use at the end for assembling support with cylinder body.Select the surface as shown below , click at sketch

In sketching window make a circle as shown below and then use sketch tool to create a hole just up to next fin or just to opposite side of this surface.

After making hole use pattern tool. This time we will use axis pattern. Select the main axis of cylinder as a reference axis set total number of holes up to 2 and use 360 option active so program will automatically place them at proper location mean 180 apart

Now our part look like complete so At the end we will use appearance gallery to make this part transparent
