Assignment
Transcribing melodic ideas, and chord progressions is a useful skill to have as a musician, so you can easily remember
new music, as well as communicate ideas to other different musicians. At various stages of the course you will be set
specific aural tests, which you will include in your musicianship portfolio.
During the first term we wiII concentrate on mastering the separate eIements of this task; meIody, rhythm, and
chord progression.
By the final test you will be expected to be able to transcribe an 8 bar melodic line in a recognised form of notation as well
as a supporting chord progression, and then play these back, and improvise over the chord progression.
All of the tests will be added to your portfolio, giving you many opportunities to meet the grading criteria.
For those of you who don't consider yourseIf confident music readers this moduIe may seem daunting but rest
assured, there are pIenty of simpIe, IogicaI approaches to Iearn how to read, reproduce and transcribe meIody,
rhythm and chord progression. Just as for those of you who are confident music reader, the improvisation and
auraI aspects may seem daunting, this moduIe wiII aIso teach you to transfer your skiIIs to meet these aspect.

another musician. Some errors may occur, but most will be
recognised and rectified;
The ability to analyse accurately the chord/scale relationship in an
eight bar chord progression;
The ability to apply their understanding of chord/scale relationship
in competent, if unremarkable improvisation;
