Electricity prices boost local CPI in June

Higher electricity prices boosted the New York area consumer price index for the sixth consecutive
month in May, according to a state Labor Department report released Wednesday.
The local CPI, which tracks retail prices, gained 0.5% in June, following a 0.6% rise in May,
according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The national CPI, which gained 0.7% in May, rose
0.2% in June, marking its smallest gain in five months.
A 13.1% jump in electricity prices pushed the local housing index up 1.2%. The housing fuel and
utilities component climbed 5.6% in June, spurred by seasonal electricity surcharges. Partially
offsetting electricity increases were a 0.7% decline in natural gas charges and a 0.4% decline in the
household furnishings and operations index.
The transportation index rose a modest 0.8% in June, after gaining 2% in May. Gasoline prices rose
at a slower rate, increasing just 1.1% in June, compared with 8.4% to 14.1% jumps during the past
three months.
The apparel index, generally down in June due to increased clearance inventory, fell 5.7%, largely
due to lower prices for women’s and girls’ apparel.
The core inflation rate, which excludes food and energy, rose 2.2% in June, after a 0.3% increase in
May. Nationwide, the core CPI rose 0.2%, up from a 0.1% increase in May.
For the 12-months ending in June, the local CPI rose 2.5%, and core inflation increased by 2.2%.

their arrest. Any felony DUI charges may also uncover charges relating to manslaughter and other
serious charges.
One of every 32 American adults has served time in prison, Nadell points out, so it shouldn't come to

As you're reading this, someone, somewhere is hitting the 'Send' button on an email (with resume
attached) explaining that they're an accomplished senior executive looking to begin a new chapter in
their career. If you're like most management recruiters, you'll give the message and (maybe) the
attachment a quick read and make a spot judgment about whether to send it to your 'Trash' folder,

Keep your eye on the ball…
Now this may seem like the simplest of all the tips that we’ve shared here but sometimes
those are some of the most valuable because of the likelihood of them being taken for
granted. So here goes… Be careful of distractions. In the midst of your search, there are
many factors that can compete for your attention and since job search ranks right up there
with oral surgery on our list of things to do (you know you need to do it but…), it’s an easy
target for getting sidetracked. There will be people and things that seem a lot more
appealing than making that next set of networking calls, writing those follow-up letters, or
studying up on your target companies. But this is one time when we can take our cue from
the Boy Scouts and their motto, “Be prepared”. Simply stated, when opportunity knocks,
you want to be ready. And one last point, don’t distract yourself. Recently, at a career
event featuring hiring managers and agents, there was some scuttle critiquing the
presentation skills of the same. I’m just tempted to believe that the information that was
imparted was a bit more important that the style in which it was communicated. Talk about
taking your eye off the ball…
