Introduction

Cakes come in a variety of forms and flavours and are among favourite desserts served during special occasions such as birthday parties, Hari Raya, weddings and etc. Cakes are treasured not only because of their wonderful taste but also in the art of cake baking and cake decorating. There are a lot of things around us related to circles or parts of a circle. The common distance of the points of a circle from its center is called its radius. Circles are simple closed curves which divide the plane into two regions, an interior and an exterior. Circles had been used in daily lives to help people in their living from the wheel to cooking utensils. My objective in doing this project is to learn how additional mathematics can be used in my daily life. Every knowledge is usable; its just that most students do not know how to apply this knowledge. Information learnt in class may not be exactly the same in the real world but by doing projects such as these, I am able to apply the education I have learnt in class to daily life tasks such as baking. With each project that I have completed, moral values are always learnt. By doing this project, I have learnt how to think more openly in applying what I have learnt in class to daily tasks. Now, I can also apply chapters such as Quadratic Equations in life, not just skills on how to count money and finding the length of an item. This project had also made me work more efficiently. Moral values are an integrated central to our lives that we can never avoid.

Answer: Geometry is used to determine suitable dimensions for the cake, to assist in designing and decorating cakes that comes in many attractive shapes and designs, to estimate volume of cake to be produced Calculus is used to determine the minimum or maximum amount of ingredients for cake baking, to estimate minimum or maximum amount of cream needed for decorating and to estimate minimum or maximum size of cake produced.

Progressions is used to determine total weight and volume of multi-storey cakes with proportional dimensions, to estimate total ingredients needed for cake-baking and to estimate the total amount of cream needed for decoration.

Part II Best Bakery shop received an order from your school to bake a 5 kg of round cake as shown in Diagram 1 for the Teachers Day celebration.

If a kilogram of cake has a volume of 3800 , and the height of the cake is to be 7.0cm, calculate the diameter of the baking tray to be used to fit the 5 kg cake ordered by your school. [Use = 3.142]

(b) Based on the values in your table, (i) state the range of heights that is NOT suitable for the cakes and explain your answers. Answer: h < 7cm is NOT suitable, because the resulting diameter produced is too large to fit into the oven. Furthermore, the cake would be too short and too wide, making it less attractive.

(ii) Suggest the dimensions that you think most suitable for the cake. Give reasons for your answer. Answer: h = 8cm, d = 54.99cm, because it can fit into the oven, and the size is suitable for easy handling.

(c) (i) Form an equation to represent the linear relation between h and d. Hence, plot a suitable graph based on the equation that you have formed. The shape that requires the least amount of fresh cream to be used is the pentagonshaped cake, since it requires only 3135 cm of cream to be used.

Part III Find the dimension of a 5 kg round cake that requires the minimum amount of fresh cream to decorate. Use at least two different methods including Calculus. State whether you would choose to bake a cake of such dimensions. Give reasons for your answers. Method 2: Quadratic Functions Use the two same equations as in Method 1, but only the formula for amount of cream is the main equation used as the quadratic function. Best Bakery received an order to bake a multi-storey cake for Merdeka Day celebration, as shown in Diagram 2.

Conclusion

Cakes come in a variety of forms such as circle or square and flavours such as butter and chocolate. This makes it among the favourite desserts served during special occasions such as birthday parties, Hari Raya, and weddings. Cakes are treasured not only because of their wonderful taste but also in the art of cake baking and cake decorating. There are many different ways to decorate a cake from the use of whipped cream to marzipan. These different ways to decorate a cake makes each cake unique. As I was conducting this project, I had noticed that quadratic functions can be applied closely into our daily lives. There is a variety of cake shapes and structures. By applying our knowledge in Additional Mathematics, such as quadratic functions, we are able to identify the total surface area of a cake. As a result, we are able to know the cost of a specific shaped cake. After learning the concept of quadratic functions, we are able to apply it in our life. In order to meet the cost of a students limited budget, we become capable on deciding which shape or design of a cake is favorable and reasonable to the event and budget.

Reflection.

While you were conducting the project, what have you learnt? What moral values did you practice? Represent your opinions or feelings creatively through usage of symbols, illustrations, drawing or even in a song.

Whilst conducting this project, I managed to learn a lot from the information that I gathered. Among them is that I have gained a lot of knowledge on how to make a cake on a budget and how additional mathematics can be used in daily life. Other than that, this project has encouraged me to work together and share ideas with my fellow classmates. It has also encouraged me to gather information from the internet, hence, improving thinking skills whilst promoting effective mathematical communication. I also had to apply mathematics to everyday situations and appreciate the importance and the beauty of mathematics in everyday lives. Finally, I propose this project should be continued to the following generation as it is very beneficial. It can improve our problem-solving skills, thinking skills, reasoning and mathematical communication. It has provided me with a wide variety of moral values that I will never forget. It is also able to test a students understanding in the subject Additional Mathematics.
