The test:
Score
Mark levels The maximum number of points you can receive for each solution is indicated after each problem. If a problem can give 2 Pass-points and 1 Pass with distinctionpoint this is written (2/1). Some problems are marked with , which means that they more than other problems offer opportunities to show knowledge that can be related to the criteria for Pass with Special Distinction in Assessment Criteria 2000. G: 6 points (or having G in G-part) VG: 12 points and G+ in G-part MVG: 12 points and G+ in G-part MVG-quality works The case of those who performed well here but have G-/G in the G-part will be evaluated individually, and case by case (subject related.) Geometrical Optics
1. A beam of light enters the end of an optic fiber as illustrated in the figure below. Show algebraically that we can guarantee total internal reflection at the side surfaces of the cylindrical fiber optics if index of refraction of the fiber optics is greater than 1.42 . In another word, regardless of the incident angle 1 , the light ray will be reflected back into the material at points A , B , on the side surface of the fiber optics. Therefore as illustrated below, if we prevent absorption of the light in the glass, the incident ray in one end of the fiber optics will leave the other end. Simultaneously the transmission of information is done at speed of light. Nobel Prize in Physics 2009 partially went to Prof. Charles Kuen Kao "for his groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibers for optical communication." [0/3/]

2. The apex angle of a prism is 55 , and the refracted ray in the prism is parallel with its base as illustrated in the figure below. a. b. c. Find the index of refraction of the prism. [0/2] Draw the ray path inside the prism and leaving it. Draw the path as clear and as neat as possible. [0/3] Calculate the minimum incident angle for a ray if it is to emerge from the opposite. Choose to solve only one of the following problems number 3 (gives only VG points) or 4 (gives both VG and MVG points). 3. A stamp collector uses a converging lens with focal length 12.0 cm to view a stamp 8.0 cm in front of the lens. a) Where is the image located? [0/2]
b) Construct the image of the object using rays path. The stamp is a square of side 2.0 cm . [0/2] c) What is the magnification? [0/1]
4. How far apart are an object and an image formed by a 75 cm focal-length converging lens if the image is 2.75 larger than the object and is real? [0/4/]

temperature is 22C . a) If 75 % of its initial potential energy goes into increasing its internal energy, find the final temperature of the quarter. [1/3] b) Does the result depend on the mass of the quarter? Why? [1] c) Does the result depend on the composition of the quarter? For example if instead we dropped a silver quarter from top of the Empire State Building. No calculation is needed just discuss the case conceptually. [0/1]
The roof of the Empire State Building is 381.0 m above the ground. A quarter is a 5.670 g US coin made of 92% Cu and 8% Ni , worth $0.25 . A non-clad silver quarters weigh 6.25 grams and are composed of 90% silver, 10% copper. What would be its final temperature if instead we dropped a silver quarter from top of the Empire State Building?

2. a) How long does it take a 1 200 W coffee maker to bring to boil 0.85 L of water initially
at 12 .C ? Assume that the part of the coffee maker which is heated with the water is made of 380 g aluminum, the system is thermally isolated from its surrounding, and no water is boiled away. [1/3] b) How long would it take for all water in the pot to be evaporated. [0/2]

3. What will be the equilibrium temperature when a 450 g of copper at 330 .C is placed in a
[0/2]
4. A 15.0 g lead bullet traveling at 220. m / s passes through a thin iron wall and emerges at a
speed of 160. m / s . The bullet absorbs 50% of the heat generated. a) What is the temperature rise of the bullet? [0/2] b) If the room temperature is 20.C , will any of the bullet melt, and if so, how much?[0/2/]
