From the Pastor’s Desk
of the saints and souls in purgatory, I have
My Dear People:
This past summer, I watched Philip Zicarelli
work on his Eagle Scout project which was
the “make over” of the lobby of the gym. It
wasn’t until this past week that Mrs. Dorn,
principal of the school, pointed out to me
that:
1.) He collected $2000 from friends for the
material for the project. 2.) He painted the
restrooms. 3.) He painted the inner
equipment rooms and added new shelving.
4.) He bought a new trophy cabinet and hung
it high on the wall. He painted the whole
lobby and removed the proverbial “clutter.”
The lobby is the perfect “make over” job.
Again, many thanks to Philip for choosing
OLS for his Eagle Scout project.
Construction will start soon on the
columbarium. The Bishop is signing the
contracts since all diocesan property is in the
bishop’s name. He was waiting for our
obtaining the performance bond. We have
just obtained it.
With the 15th of October, the first period of a
sale price on a niche is over. Now for the
next two years the price will be $2300.00.
Then the price goes to $2500.00.
I am happy to announce that the goal of 100
niches to be sold before we start construction
is exceeded by 17. So with 117 niches being
sold, construction will begin shortly. Again, I
would like to thank Ed McDevitt, Doug Ross
and Ann Bruno for their continual work on the
committee.
When construction starts on the
columbarium, the green grass will be invaded
in front of the rectory. However, when we
see the beautiful garden and the place for
the remains of OLS parishioners we will
realize that the beautiful garden will enhance
the property and give it a beauty all its own.
Most importantly, it will help us remember our
deceased relatives and friends.
As we soon approach November, the month
asked the office for a list of names whose
funerals we have had in the last two years.
When I have my list, I will pray for those who
need prayers and I will pray to those in
heaven to intercede for me with God. One
way or another we should not forget our
loved ones. For as the ritual says:
“The Bonds of affection that
knit us as one throughout
our lives, do not unravel
with death”.
This is our doctrine of the communion of
saints. There is still that connection between
ourselves and our loved ones. It does not
unravel with death.
Again, thank you for your generosity to OLS
parish and to Catholic Charities. May your
concern for our parish reach out to our Youth
and may you help me pray for the successful
searching for a new Minister of the Youth.

The Royal Standard in downtown Homewood will
host an “OLS NIGHT” on Tuesday, October 28th,
from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Come shop for furnishings
and gift items, including Christmas items. Ten
percent of all sales will be donated to our school.
There will be a raffle, door prizes and
refreshments will be provided by the store. Invite
your friends and neighbors and come show your
appreciation to this business for their generosity
to our school.
Daytime Ultreya now meets on Friday as part of
the Birmingham Diocesan Cursillo Movement, a
daytime Ultreya has been formed for Cursillistas
who find this time more convenient. This Ultreya
is an alternative to the night Ultreya held on the
fourth Tuesday of the month at Our Lady of
Sorrows Church; however, Cursillistas are
welcome to attend either or both.
The daytime Ultreya now meets the fourth Friday
of each month. This month it will be on Friday.

Church, Room 203, after the 9:00 a.m. Mass.

sharing and a witness talk given by Lil Bruzzese

FLU AND PHEUMONIA IMMUNIZATION
