INTRODUCTION
Andrew Maynard Architects was established
in 2002 following Andrews receipt of
the grand prize in the Asia Pacic Design
Awards for his Design Pod. The core
principles in the establishment of AMA was
a balance between built projects and broad
polemical design studies.
This is demonstrated in AMAs highly
crafted built work and socio-politically
based concepts, both of which have been
widely published and have garnered global
recognition.
Andrew Maynard Architects explores
architecture of enthusiasm - AMA treats
each project as a unique challenge, offering
unique possibilities and prides itself in
experimentation. All of AMAs designs are
concept rich, left of centre and sustainability
conscious; styles and singular themes are
avoided. AMA specialises in ideas rather
than building type, whether the project be a
house in Fitzroy, a library in Japan, a protest
shelter in Tasmania, a plywood bicycle or
a suburb eating robot. Andrew Maynard
Architects continues to be published in many
prestigious international journals such as
Mark Magazine [Amsterdam], Architectural
Record [US], Architectural Review
[London], Monument, Houses, A+T [Spain],
Architecture Australia, Wallpaper [London]
and Pol Oxygen. AMAs conceptual and
built work has been exhibited in New York,
Budapest, Melbourne, Sydney, Osaka, Milan,
Sao Paulo, Tokyo and more.
Maynards work runs the
gamut from residential to
commercial buildings to
conceptual designs. His
new concepts in design,
including a Japanese
library, an arts precinct, and
protest shelters, have won
him international attention.

Director
Mark is a fantastic architect and a great project
manager. He is, like Andrew, a staunchly proud
Tasmanian, who in his diverse career has worked
in a variety of capacities including his role as a
production designer for the English National
Opera in London.
Throughout his architectural career Mark
continues to show a incredible balance between

and organisation skills. He has a ne eye for
detail and is respected by clients, consultants and
builders for his management skills. Mark provides
a great balance and rigour to Andrews lofty ideas
and experiments.
Graduating from the University of Tasmania in
1993 with a Bachelor of Environmental Design,
Mark moved to Melbourne in 1994 to attend the
University of Melbourne where he completed
the Bachelor of Architecture degree. Following a
collection of successful residential projects Mark

Andrew Maynard
Architects have carved
a niche for themselves
in their home country of
Australia. The media savvy
and technologically aware
ofce is unafraid of mixing
big conceptual designs
with beautifully conceived
small-scale residential
works
Wallpaper*
A national design industry all on his own, Andrew
Maynard is always provocative and sometimes
very funny with both his real projects and his
expression of entertaining ideas.
TREEHUGGER
On top of being a wildly inventive architect,
Andrew Maynard- whose prefabs have been
widely lauded for their astounding multiplicity
and brilliant design- turns out to be a cleverly
scheming activist
WORLD CHANGING
Maynards work runs the gamut from residential
to commercial buildings to conceptual designs.
His new concepts in design, including a
Japanese library, an arts precinct, and protest
shelters, have won him international attention.
Randi Greenberg
ARCHITECTURAL RECORD
Maynards work offers a ash of illumination
towards the next generation of smart, compact,
elegant home design. Each project begs a long,
awe-inspired look and makes the future look like
a very nice place to live.
INHABITAT
We are both blown away by your designs, and
the more we look, the more there is to be excited
about! Were really impressed with how youve
incorporated the most important parts of our brief
into the design work to come up with something
that is creative, functional, realistic, unique and
bloody impressive!
Ilma St Clients
Australian architect Andrew Maynard has
been getting a lot of attention recently - and for
good reason. Barely 30 years old, the prolic
young architects web portfolio is peppered with
amazingly clever designs - both built and unbuilt
- that range from protest treehouses to lego-like
prefabs, to an origami house which unfolds out of
a column.

INHABITAT
Australian Architect Andrew Maynard, an under
40 star in the making. His work is marked by
ne detailing, a bit of whimsy, and big graphic
overtures allowing his portfolio to be less about
style & more about character of spaces. The
buildings seem more like a box of old treasures,
more than anything else, telling stories on the joy
of making architecture.
ARCHITECHNOPHILIA
Maynard is one of a small
group of exciting, young
and creatively boundless
Australian architects who
are set to change the face
of Melbourne. These gifted,
edgy, clued-up and media-
savvy thirtysomethings are
all producing internationally
recognised work at a time
when architecture has
never been so cool.

Project Description
The Vader House
is an extension to a
Victorian terrace in
the dense inner-city.
The high boundary
walls, built in disregard
of existing height
regulations long
before such rules were
created, permitted a
non-standard height
along the northern
boundary. The rooine
then abruptly turns to
follow the dictated set-
back lines, resulting
in a playful and telling
interpretation of
planning rules.
All the new works
surround an outdoor
courtyard space which
becomes the new
centre of the house-
accessed by a series
of glass doors it is the
opposite of the dark
masonry-clad rooms

Project Description
The Barrow extension
appears as an
arrangement of timber
boxes, each independently
rotated and subjected
to varying amounts
of extruding and
manipulating forces.
These separate actions
result in a variety of
shapes, which united,
create an interior of
differing volumes and
organizations.
The extension challenges
the normally lightweight
nature of timber
construction; added wall
thickness to different
areas results in a structure
with a uctuating sense of
mass. The varying nature
of these environments
is further enhanced
by differing window
arrangements and framing
techniques. Frequently
the windows are setback
within the frame of the
wall, sometimes ush and
occasionally extruding
beyond the timber frame.
Stategic placement of the
extension and the new
studio at the end of the
site, allow both to openly
embrace the central
garden which becomes
part of the living space.

The design of the

approached by
adding architectural

allows opportunities

It was inspired by the
forms of trees and the
idea of a cloud like
canopy which could
be modular and easy
to install in different
positions and areas of
the courtyard.

Project Description
The approach taken
for the Mash House
is one which, despite
rst impressions,
celebrates the
backyard. Or perhaps
less so the traditional
notion of the backyard,
and more so just plain,
out- door space. The
original deep and
dark, double-fronted
Victorian house
offered a plethora of
challenges; not least
of all, its lack of solar
access.
Overall, the design is
an experimentation
of form and colour,
albeit simple solution
to a rather challenging
suburban site. The
concept was driven
by obtaining passive
efciency, via shrewd
siting and orientation.
Quality insulation,
ample double-glazing

combine to make this
home a retro-futuristic
sustainable modern
house renovation.

to house a new
volunteer program
at the Royal Botanic
Gardens Melbourne
that educates, inspires,
excites and informs
visitors. This project is
designed to enhance
the onsite experience
for visitors to the RBG
Melbourne in a unique
way.
Andrew Maynard
Architects came up
with a design solution
that could potentially
inspire community
groups to be involved
in the opportunities for
gardening. This modular
portable pod can be
easily dismounted
almost anywhere.
When the mobile cube
is closed it looks like
a giant pot plant but
once its opened it will
create three different
areas: a sitting area,
a display area and
a potting/ general
purpose area.
Thanks to its
operational exibility
and ergonomic design
it may be used for many
different purposes.

Project Description
More frequently holiday
homes are becoming little
more than transplanted
suburban ugliness; the
great Australian tradition
of the shack is in danger
of being superseded by
bloated mansions with
four bathrooms and all the
trappings of modern life.
With this project we
wanted to celebrate the
shack and have kept close
to the original buildings
footprint to avoid taking
over the rugged coastal
block.
Our clients came to us
with a brief for much
more room for their aging
family holiday home. Our
response was a series
of nely-crafted timber
boxes nestled around the
bulk of the existing house.
The bedroom addition
opens up the northern
facade of the house to the
rugged bush block, doing
double duty as the roof
becomes an expansive
deck to extend the
living space out into the
treetops. Other additions
include extra storage
space and a glass-ceiling
shower for more of those
precious tree-top views.

Many of the design

a simple box- the

Council requirements
regarding overlooking

resolved by UV

elaborate screening.
The tree supergraphic

The unfolding of a dark

Terrace into a bright,

the main consideration
for this growing family.
The original plan
produced an
environment of
dislocated cells
coming off a long
dark corridor with the

These segregated

communal social areas,
producing fragmented

Project Description
A renovation of a

the existing house while
providing an adaptable,
contemporary new

The brief called for a

An abundance of light
marks the extension

Andrews work here

Project Description
The Skene House is
a warehouse tout in
North Fitzroy. The key
to designing within a

carving the beautiful
large spaces into small

spaces are dened
between cabinetry and

these new items go all
the way to the ceiling

housing. A fertile arena
to unify and celebrate
the richness of
Osakas contemporary
culture and lifestyle.
The new centre is
also a revolutionary
example to the world
of how our cities could
work in the future. By
rethinking the way
we use our urban
fabric the proposal
suggests a distortion
and manipulation of
the ubiquitous urban
balance that we
inhabit. The proposal
distorts common
urban elements and
hierarchy to create
an urban gesture that
prompts imagination,
connectivity,
optimism, community
involvement and public
access.

Project Description
A concept for Sonys
new agship tower in
the Pearl River Delta
region of China. We
decided to base our
concept for the Sony
Tower in Guangzhou, a
city that is in constant
ux. Guangzhou
reshapes itself daily
through demolition,
construction and
economic growth
equaled to none.
The concept for the
tower was simple.
The technological
giant that is Sony
has its humble
roots entrenched
in the delivery and
amplication of sound.
Many of Sonys rst
products were simple
sound emitting or
recording devices. We
decided to design a
tower and then hit it
with a wall of sound.
Through computer
modelling we
manipulated a simple
tower by hitting it with
the sound SONY to
create the kinetic form
that is Sony Tower.

Project Description
Using Tomihiro
Hoshinos paintings
as a catalyst, this
competition entry
for the Tomihiro
museum of Shi-Ga
is an emotive and
expressive mixture
of natural, earthy,
textured material
within ordered and
restrained structure.
Specically Tomihiros
Pussy Willow implies
a physical, tactile,
textured and spatial
relationship between
the colour, pattern
and the text as both
pattern and meaning.
The text itself, beyond
offering poignant
poetry, also provides
us with a graphical
relationship between
meaning and space.

Project Description
This conceptual
exploration of the
contemporary shift in
libraries recognises the
move to mechanised
sorting and delivery
of library books; in
response, traditional
methods are used to
reinforce and celebrate
the contemporary
library as a pivotal
cultural institution.
Libraries represent the
ultimate self referential
tool of a culture. As a
place for society and
community to connect
and understand
itself, their past and
present direction into
the future through
access to cultural
information and shared
knowledge. With the
shifting functional
nature of our libraries
we must maintain an
architectural language
that reinforces
the importance of
collected, shared
knowledge to
community structure.

BOB Mobile Home
Client
Intersection Magazine
Project Description
BOB is a hybrid
home of the future, a
mobile living tool for
tomorrows generation
of nomadic wanderers.
Somewhere between
a tent, a house
and a Winnebago,
BOB explores the
relationship between
the basic human
requirements of travel
and shelter.
The simple premise
for BOB is that a
vans engine, gearbox
and drivetrain are all
located under the front
seats, leaving the rest
of the van for living
in. Given all of BOBs
technology and critical
components are
efciently contained in
the front quarter, we
have made the walls
and roof dynamic by
allowing them to fold
down and triple the
effective oorspace.

Growing Up
Urban Orchard
Green Rooftop
Client
Committee for
Melbourne
Project Description
A cities gardens
can be more than a
decorated landscape.
Like the built
environment, green
spaces can work
with us to make an
integrated urban
environment rather
than isolated pockets
of manicured greenery.
We propose a garden
that contributes
a SOCIAL space,
creates a low impact
and sustainable
ECONOMIC model,
beauties the URBAN
landscape and
improves our urban
areas impact on the
ENVIRONMENT.
We propose that rather
than only producing
a beautiful, green
rooftop space, we
also create a greater,
and achievable urban
gesture. We propose a
working garden that is
wonderful to visit, great
to have events at,
while also producing
food much like Cubas
Market Gardens.
