IN THE NEWS
Protests grow over new homes MORE than 1,000 people have objected to plans for new homes at an 11 acre plot off Nantwich Road. They have written to Cheshire West and Chester Council following a strong campaign by the Tarporley Greenfield Awareness Project. The council is expected to decide the application in December. Footballers allowed to use sports hall GOOD news for two of Tarporley Vics football teams, who have been given permission to carry on using the sports hall at the old Brook Farm School temporarily. The veterans and under 11s teams are currently using the hall for training but were facing finding another base after Cheshire West and Chester Council announced it was cutting electricity to the site. However, the council has relented and allowed the teams to carry on using the hall for the time being. Woodland memorial A MEMORIAL has been put up at the Tarvin Community Woodland in honour of Jim Grogan who helped create the area. Jim, who was founder of the community woodland trust, died in January. Last month a gold plaque set on sandstone was unveiled in memory of his contribution to the woodland. The Bunbury Agency is your Family Agency

The Bunbury Agency is one of the few organisations in Cheshire that can provide all the services you may need for your family and your home. Do you need a.. l Maternity Nurse, a Nanny, or an Au Pair to look after your children? l housekeeper or Domestic to look after your home? l Carer to look after an elderly relative? We are able to assist you in every way from running your home and looking after your children, to caring for the older and more vulnerable members of your family.
Stop preSS!

Despite economic restrictions, families still need assistance in the home. Child Care costs are becoming increasingly expensive and the care of our elderly relatives very much part of our every day lives. Standards and quality of service are paramount and must never be compromised. When times are tough, a local service can offer the best value for money and an experienced Care Agency can ensure staff are properly recruited and vetted before being introduced to a family. however, one must be realistic about the cost of using an Agency. With this in mind we have decided to substantially

change our fee structure to ensure that as many families as is possible can have the support and assistance they need without breaking the bank. We provide: l Flexible and tailor made care for the elderly l Cost effective child care l experienced housekeepers and Domestics We are registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for the provision of elderly care and are members of the Association of Nanny Agencies (ANA) and the British Au Pair Agencies Association (BAPAA)and abide by their codes of practice.

We are continually looking for local qualified and experienced Elderly and Child Carers, Domestics and Housekeepers. Call 01829 730201

TarPOrLEY ParISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTEr

Volunteers show true grit

LAST winter saw our first attempt at forming a network of gritting volunteers, who made the pavements safer. If, on reading this, your reaction is there werent any round us then we would welcome yourself or a neighbour to take on that patch. You get a training session (45 mins), insurance cover, a supply of grit, a bucket and spade and then its over to you. If interested, contact either the clerk Tel 01829 733496 or James Blackford at jhblackford@hotmail.co.uk. Last winter our team of volunteers and the Parish Council contractors did an excellent job gritting the pavements and some road junctions to supplement the gritting of the roads done by our local borough Council CWaC. However the most glaring problems for the whole community seemed to be the High Street, the Community Centre, and the slope up to the Royal British Legion car park, all of which we would like to address this year. So we are looking for volunteers amongst the shop keepers on the High Street and others to tackle the Community Centre and the slope up to the Legion car park. Any helpers please? For the rest of us, remember, the wise buy their bag of Rock Salt before the big freeze hits - a big freeze is what is being predicted by the Met. Office for this winter.

Best Kept Village award

Tarporley residents are delighted to again be group winners in the Best Kept Village division of the Community Pride competition Cheshire Community Action. Congratulations are due to all of those in the community who have made this possible for three of the last four years. The village won the 2501 to 5000 population group, ahead of Willaston-in-Wirral, Prestbury and Disley, who all got through to the second round of the competition. Congratulations are also due to Rushton with Eaton, who won their group, and the overall competition winners, Christleton. Awards were presented on 6th October in the grand surroundings of the Civic Hall at Ellesmere Port. 10 To advertise call 01244 350398

Ladies choir strike the right note for hospital

PICTuRED is Tarporley CE Primary school pupil Evie Halsall handing over a cheque for over 300 to Siobhan McMahon, Lead Specialist Speech and Language Therapist, of The Alder Hey Childrens Hospital Cleft Lip and Palate unit. The money was raised by Tarporley ladies choir The Decibellas at a recent concert. Evie, whose mum sings with The Decibellas, has been treated by The Cleft unit since her birth six years ago. The unit at Alder Hey is a centre of excellence serving the local area, and the money raised will be used to offer information and support to parents and families of children born with a cleft lip and palate. The Decibellas would like to thank everyone who supported the concert and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Their Christmas concert will be held on Thursday 15th December at 7.30pm at St Helens Church, Tarporley. Entrance is free. Visit www.decibellas.co.uk for further details. P.S. Are you a budding film maker? The Decibellas Ladies Choir are looking for someone to record their concerts. Please contact our musical director Mel Levy at levymelanie@hotmail.com

Youngsters complete reading challenge

Around 87 children have taken part in this years Summer Reading Challenge titled Circus Stars at Tattenhall Library. Tattenhall Councillor Mike Jones presented young readers at his local library with certificates and medals. He said: The Summer Reading Challenge is an excellent way to keep up childrens reading levels over the long summer holidays. It is also an opportunity for families to share a fun activity together and share in their childrens achievement. Each child presented with a medal and certificate had read six books over the summer holidays in an initiative which takes place in libraries across the uK.

Councillor Mike Jones presents the Circus Stars awards to children from Tattenhall Park Primary School.

TarPOrLEY HIGH SCHOOL & SIxTH FOrm COLLEGE

Fab 4 represent England at Handball

FOuR students from Tarporley had the privilege of representing England at an under 16s handball tournament in Sweden. The fact that four pupils from one school should be playing for England is a fantastic achievement not only for them but also for their coach Gary Kelsall who coaches at the school every Monday after school. The intrepid foursome of Ben Tyler, Zak Dunstone, Jack Oliphant and Jazz Clark flew out to Gothenburg in the summer to take part in the Partille Cup (the largest youth tournament in the world) got under way with over 1,000 teams and over 19,000 players from 46 nations. This year the boys went through as runners up in their group. The girls played well in their group and just missed out going to the next stage. The picture shows the four players receiving awards for their performances for the local handball club (Deva, Chester) from the former Great Britain captain Ciaran Williams. Ben and Zak have just found out that they have been selected for the England u18s and will be off to Germany at half-term. Students at Tarporley Sixth Form College celebrated the recent opening of their extended common room and cafe by hosting a coffee morning for local members of the community. Students served tea, coffee and biscuits to members of local church and hospital groups. Sixth Form students undertake community work as part of their enrichment programme; they have raised money for local institutions but also wanted to show local people their new facilities as well as talk to them about their studies and hopes for the future. The event was part of the Sixth Form Citizenship programme.

health & beauty

with Angela Bartlett Q. Do I need to follow any special homecare procedures when having electrolysis for hair removal? A .It is very important to follow homecare advice after treatment. I have a special little mantra for my electrolysis clients which is based on the three Cs keep the skin cool, calm and clean. This means avoiding heat treatments, avoiding friction or irritation and applying a specialised antiseptic product for several days following electrolysis. For further information on correct homecare and aftercare advice after electrolysis treatment visit the November newsletter page at www. angelabartlett.co.uk Its also very helpful to follow a good skin care regime using products which aim to hydrate, moisturise and repair the skin. A well hydrated and conditioned skin will recover much quicker than a skin which is not looked after well. Q. I have been told that I have a Spider Naevus on my face. It sounds horrific! What is it and can it be treated? A. A spider naevus is a central dilated blood vessel, with smaller blood capillaries radiating out from it like the legs of a spider hence its name. I know it sounds horrible, but it can be eradicated very successfully with advanced electrolysis using short wave diathermy. The treatment is fairly quick and similar aftercare measures are required as above. To see a picture of a spider naevus and to find out what other skin conditions short wave diathermy can treat visit the November newsletter page at www.angelabartlett.co.uk

Harvest for the homeless

CHILDREN have been collecting harvest goodies to help homeless young people. Save the Family called for donations to help the growing number of young people in their care. The charity, which has family centres in Northop and Cotton Edmunds and outreach homes across North Wales, prevents children from going into local authority care by providing temporary accommodation to homeless families. Headteacher at Tarporley CofE Primary School, Vince OBrien, said: The charity is helping local people and those families in most need. The children here recognise that and were delighted to support the harvest appeal, he said. l Tarporley Primary School pupils Louis Livingston, 7, Abigail George, 7, Aaron James, 7, and Emily Taylor, 8, with some of the schools harvest donations for Save the Family

Spartans hit the trail

EARLY in the summer of 2011 we formed a new, local running group called the Delamere Spartans.
Were a friendly bunch who love trail (or off road) running in Delamere Forest and the surrounding areas, typically the Peckforton hills, the Sandstone Trail and Frodsham/ Helsby hills. We meet up every Tuesday evening for a run, usually followed by a drink in one of the local pubs. Our weekly runs are around 8-10 miles (every week is a different route), but we always make provisions for people not wanting to run this far by also doing a shorter 4-5 mile loop. Tuesday evenings are becoming popular, sometimes with 20+ runners joining us. As a like-minded group of runners, there are often plenty of ad-hoc runs to get involved with too, from weekend meet-ups to mass entries into local races. We have a great mix of ages, gender and abilities in the club, right the way through from some pretty serious endurance runners to people who are fairly new to the sport and looking for some encouragement. We all have one main aim though, which is to improve our running fitness whilst soaking up some of the most beautiful surroundings that Cheshire has to offer. The dwindling evening light wont stop us either and were now running on Tuesday evenings with head torches, which if youve never done it before is great fun and adds another dimension to running! Newcomers are very welcome to join us on our runs with absolutely no obligations. Nominal membership fees apply if you enjoy it and want to come along regularly, meaning you can proudly call yourself a true Delamere Spartan (we even have very cool running vests)! Ideally you need to be able to run four hilly miles before coming along, but importantly, when running with us, nobody ever runs alone or gets left behind. We sometimes meet up in different places, so if you want to come along please go to the forum on our website for details at www.delamerespartans.org.uk/forum/ You can also follow us on Twitter at @ SpartanRunners We look forward to seeing you soon!

Wine talk

with Gill nicol, from Dee Fine Wine

AS the nights draw in and the temperature seems to get cooler by the day I find myself veering towards the warming comfort of a glass of red wine. This evening will be my final wine tasting class with a group Ive been teaching for five weeks and I thought I would take this opportunity to reflect on which red wines over the space of those 5 weeks have been the most enjoyable. So this month Ill be recommending something from Argentina, Italy and Portugal, three of the countries that we focused on during our tasting sessions. Malbec is a grape variety that has become synonymous with Argentina, despite its French origins and its not difficult to see why it is described as being the black wine of Cahors, the region of France from where the grape originates. So dense is it in colour that whichever way you lean your glass, you can only see the dark inky hues of what is a full bodied, fruit packed red wine. The Malbec Nieto (8.25) is classic Malbec, deep in colour, bundles of blackcurrants and spice on the nose with a rich, full bodied palate that delivers all the flavour it promises on the nose. The Ciconia Tinto (7.25) is a red wine from the innovative wine region of Alentejo in southern Portugal, a region also famous for its cork trees. Named after the White Stalks that are said to live in this picturesque part of the country, the wine is a blend of local grape varieties Aragones and Touriga Nacional and some Syrah, the more widely known Shiraz. Spices and red berries on the nose with hints of smoke, this wine has lovely juicy fruit on the palate balanced with soft, chewy tannins and a complex, seductive finish. Finally the Nero dAvola, Cusumano (11.00) from Sicily was by far the hit of the Italian evening. Nero meaning black in Italian and Avola is the town in south eastern Sicily, from where the grape is named after. A luxuriously chunky red from this hot, Mediterranean island thatll give any new world blockbuster red a run for its money. All wines recommended this month can be bought at Chester Beer and Wine where I teach regular wine tasting classes. Please contact me if youre interested in enrolling on a course or are interested in a wine tasting event at info@deefinewine.co.uk Gill teaches regular wine tasting courses and is the owner of Dee Fine Wine, a wine tasting events company based in the historic city of Chester. www.deefinewine.co.uk. 56 To advertise call 01244 350398

FOOTBaLL TaLK... TarPOrLEY vICS FC

Goal drought a big concern

TARPORLEY Vics First Teams form shows no sign of improvement as we head towards November. Injuries are still the biggest concern, however Al Rowntree has now returned to full training and Richie Moss is not too far from a return to action. A lack of goals has been the main problem with only one goal being scored in the last four games, with 1st team debutant 17 year old Ben Parry grabbing a late consolation penalty against Denton Town in a 5-1 reversal. Tarporley Vics Reserves October form has also suffered as the usual university departures leave Andy Williams relying on new players to fill in the gaps. New players are always required to freshen up the squads therefore if you are new to the area please come along to any Vics game or training session, details of which can be found on our website. One win, one draw and 2 defeats were the results from the four week period and Tarporley now lie in 7th position in the Crewe & District Combined league. Tarporley Vics veterans side The Playboys played Tattenhall FC Veterans side recently and returned with a 3-3 draw. The goals were scored by Gary Joyce, Adam Walton and an own goal. The Playboys extend a welcome to any over 35s to join the squad, and training is on a Thursday night at Brook Farm. The team play around six to eight games per season on a friendly basis and due to work and family commitments a large pool of players is required to help facilitate these games. Please phone Sean Taylor on 07855 863978 if you want to get involved. For further information on training or sponsorship opportunities please view our website tarporleyvics.co.uk. Or email us at info@tarporleyvics.co.uk. You can also become a Facebook Friend of Tarporley Victoria FC

Tarporley, Bunbury & District Historical Society

THE Society is receiving a number of enquiries from as far afield as Canada and Australia. Recently a documentary film company has enquired about the Beeston Petrol Depot and Operation Pluto. The Pipeline under the Ocean (PLuTO) was designed to supply petrol from northern England to the advancing Allied armies in France in the months following D-Day. Pipelines were constructed from the northern refineries to the south coast terminals with several depots or pimping stations along their routes. One of these was built into a hill near Bunbury, Cheshire, which it can be seen by travellers on the A49 on the right immediately after passing under the Beeston railway bridge. But can anyone remember it being built? Does anyone have any photographs or stories about the depot/pumping station or about the men employed here? If you do, how about letting us know at our meeting in Tiverton Village Hall on Thursday, on 24th November, (sponsored by Wright Manley) when the county Archivist, Jonathan Pepler, will discuss Cheshire Maps and Map Makers (or contact pyoung@care4free. net)

CAB outreach programme The Citizens Advice Bureau is running an outreach programme at Tarporley Community Centre on the third Wednesday of each month. The next ones take place on Wednesday 16th November. The CAB is a national charity offering a free, confidential impartial information and advice service. The service can also be contacted by phone or through local offices in Winsford, Northwich and Chester. Tel contact 08444 111 444 Horse box fire A mobile horse box in Road Street, Tarporley, was extinguished by firefighters on 7th October. The fire completely destroyed the box but no one was injured. CLUBS aND SOCIETIES
Tattenhall Gardening Society There have been lots of changes at Ness Gardens since Paul Cook visited us last! Curator Paul will give an illustrated talk on the transformation of the clay marl pit, the new visitors centre, the alfresco entertainment area and many more exciting new additions to the garden. Meet in the Barbour Institute on Wednesday 9th November at 7.30pm for his talk entitled Recent Developments at Ness Gardens. Please note that this meeting will start at the slightly earlier time of 7.30pm in the Barbour Institute, as we will be holding our famously brief AGM prior to the talk. We would like to invite you to make nominations for the committee. Please hand in your nomination slips before 7.30 on the night. New members always welcome. Membership costs 10.-- for single and 15.-- for joint membership. Visitors 2.50. U3a Our November speaker is from the Cheshire Wildlife Trust telling us about plants and wildlife places in Cheshire for everyone to enjoy. Their work has helped to secure the future for many habitats and species. Come along and find out more about their projects. The meeting will be at the Barbour Institute, Tattenhall, on Thursday 17th November at 2pm. Free refreshments available. New members will be welcome to join at the meeting. Kelsall Gardening Club On Tuesday 8th November Jane Allison will be giving an interesting talk on how to make the most of your garden space meeting in the Methodist Schoolroom at 7.45pm. Non members welcome, 2 on the night. Further information from Jane Beattie on 01829 751052 or Jenny Talks on 01829 759470 Tattenhall Wildlife Group We next meet on Wednesday 2nd November at 7.30 pm in the Barbour Institute. We are pleased to welcome Dan Garner, archeologist of the Habitats and Hillforts project, who will be talking to us about the Hillforts of the Sandstone Ridge. Is there a conflict of interests between wildlife conservation and historical exploration - and if so how can this be best resolved? Come along to this meeting and find out more about the historical aspects of our local landscape. Non-members are more than welcome for an entrance fee of 2.50. Viv Forshaw 01829 770576 Peckforton WI During the October meeting there was a presentation from Mr Tom Jones whose subject was A Millers Tale. He told us of his involvement in educational guided tours and the continuing restoration and maintenance of Stretton Mill, parts of which date back to 1630. His enthusiasm for the mill was obvious and inspired many questions from the audience. Our next meeting on November 2nd will be the AGM followed by a supper and in December Di Mather will talk on My Life in Television.

Fire cadets now being recruited MALPAS Fire Station is looking for enthusiastic young people to join the Fire Cadet unit and is inviting anyone who is interested to go along to one of its weekly meetings. The Station is keen to recruit young people aged between 13 and 16 years of age to take part in this rewarding scheme. Cadets attend meetings every Monday from 7-9pm at the Chester Road Fire Station. Cadets dont need to live in Malpas to be part of the unit. Apart from the weekly drill nights cadets also take part in additional activities at weekends and during the school holidays, which include residential stays, local camps and national camp trips. They are also involved in fundraising activities for the Firefighters Charity. All Cheshire Fire Cadets get a free uniform and also a fire kit, which is similar to that worn by firefighters, from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and the evenings are free to attend, but there may be a small charge towards refreshments. Cadets dont need to live in Malpas to be part of the unit and anyone interested should go along on any Monday evening from 7-9pm.
