[4]

2. Find the range of values of k for which the straight line 2 y kx = will not intersect the
curve

[3]

3.
The equation of a curve is | | ln 2( 1) y x = + .

(i) Sketch the curve, clearly labelling any asymptote(s) and intersection(s) with the
axes.
[2]

(ii) Express the equation of the curve as x in terms of y . Hence, find the exact area
bounded by the curve, the y axis and the line 2 y = .
[4]

(iii) Find the equation of the normal to the curve at x k = , expressing your answer in
the form y mx c = + , where m and c are in terms of k .
If the normal to the curve at x k = passes through the origin, determine the value
of k , giving your answer to 4 decimal places.

5. A piece of wire of length 100 cm is cut into two pieces. One piece is bent to form a
circle of radius r cm, and the other piece is bent to form a square.

Show that the sum of the areas A, enclosed by the cut wires is

A r r t t = + .
[2]

Hence without the use of a graphing calculator, find the exact value of r for which the
value of A is stationary and determine the nature of this stationary value.
[5]

6. An experiment was conducted to study the population growth of guinea pigs. The
population, x , of guinea pigs, t months after the start of the experiment is given by

(i) Find the population of the guinea pigs when 4 t = , giving your answer to the
nearest integer.
[3]

(ii) Determine the long term population of the guinea pigs. [1]

Section B: Statistics [60 marks]

7. A supermarket sells conventionally grown and organically grown vegetables.
Conventionally grown vegetables constitute 80% of his sales; radish constitute 10% of
the conventional sales and 25% of the organic sales. Complete the tree diagram below to
illustrate the above information and give a brief description of the probability associated
with the branch labelled *.

C : Conventionally grown
O : Organically grown
R : Radish
V : Other vegetables

Find the probability that a randomly chosen customer bought

[3]
(i) conventionally grown radish, [1]

(ii) radish. [2]

Given that the customer bought radish, find the probability that they were organically
grown.
[3]

8. Given that P( ) 0.4 A = and B is an event independent of A such that P( ) 0.7 A B = .

(a) Find P( ) B . [2]

Another event C is such that P( ) 0.25 C = and P( ) 0.1 B C ' = .

9. Explain briefly what is meant by a population and a sampling frame. [2]

A junior college wants to send forty-two students to attend a one-day National
Education workshop. Describe how to choose these students using systematic sampling
from a list of 1200 students in the college.
[3]

10. The probabilities that a randomly chosen vehicle using a certain road will have tyres
classified as adequate, worn and dangerous are 0.7 , 0.2 and 0.1respectively.
Find the probability that, when ten vehicles are stopped in a random safety check,

(i) at least 8 will have adequate tyres, [2]

(ii) more than 1 and at most 5 will have dangerous tyres. [3]

It is decided that the number of vehicles that will be stopped in the random safety check
be increased to sixty. Using a suitable approximation, find the probability that the
number of vehicles with worn tyres is at least 8 but less than 15. State the condition(s)
under which the approximation is used.
[5]

11. A country baker makes packets of biscuits with mean mass of 30g and standard
deviation of 2.3g. She then packs them into cartons containing 35 packets of biscuits
in each carton.

(i) State the approximate distribution of the total mass, S , of the 35 packets of
biscuits in a carton and find the probability that S is more than 1070 g.
[2]

Assuming that the mass of an empty carton is negligible, find the probability that

(ii) in a batch of 55 randomly inspected cartons of biscuits, less than 7 weigh
more than 1070 g,
[2]

(iii) the total mass of three randomly selected cartons of biscuits exceeds three times
the mass of a randomly selected carton of biscuits by more than 10 g.
[4]

The label on a carton of biscuits reads Net weight 1050g. A quality regulation requires
that at least 90% of such cartons to have a total mass of not less than 1050 g.

(iv) Assuming that the standard deviation remains unchanged, find the least value of
the mean mass of a packet of biscuits that would be consistent with this
requirement.

12. A random sample of 75 eleven-year-old students have performed a simple task and the
time, t minutes, taken by each student is noted. The results are summarised by

1215 t =

,
2
21708 t =

.

Calculate the unbiased estimates of the population mean and variance. [2]

Test, at the 1% level of significance, whether the mean time taken for a student to
perform the task exceeds 15minutes.
[4]

State with a reason, whether it is necessary to assume that the time taken to perform the
task is normally distributed in order for the test to be valid.
[1]

It is given that the population standard deviation of the time taken to perform the task is
5minutes. Another large random sample of size n , with a sample mean of 16 , is taken
for a repeat of the test at 5% level. Find the smallest value of n if the null hypothesis is
rejected.
[3]

13. The following table shows the chlorine residue, y ppm, in a swimming pool at x hours
after it has been treated with chemicals.

Number of hrs, x 0 2 4 6 8 10 12
Chlorine residue (ppm), y
2.2 1.8 1.6 1.4 1.1 1.0 0.9

The reading at zero hour was taken immediately after the chemical treatment was
completed.

(i) Sketch a scatter diagram for the above data. Briefly describe two key
observations of the diagram.
[4]

(ii) Calculate the linear product-moment correlation coefficient for the above data
and the equation of least square regression line of y on x .
[2]

(iii) Use the equation obtained in (ii) to estimate the amount of chlorine in the
pool five hours after it has been treated with chemicals.
Comment on the reliability of this estimate.
[2]

(iv) Give two reasons, why it is appropriate to use the equation obtained in (ii) to
estimate the time that has elapsed when the chlorine residue in the pool is
1.7 ppm.
[2]

(v) Estimate the time elapsed when there is no trace of chlorine left in the pool. [1]
