SYLLABUS--Dr. Margaret Enright WyeEn2740D Fall/2010 Rm. S224 REQUIRED TEXT: The Bedford Anthology of World Literature.

7th Edition., Vols. 1,2, & 3,. Paul Davis, et al. 2004 OFFICE HOURS: S-218, Tuesday & Thursday, 11-Noon AND By Appointment. COURSE RATIONALE: This will be an overview of the Epic Genre from Classical Greece to Milton.
COLLEGE-LEVEL PROFICIENCY in the study of World Masterpieces includes:

An overview of significant, defined masterpieces. Developing a sense of the concrete and substantial detail necessary to understand the position and relevance of the assigned reading. Demonstrating knowledge of assignments in scheduled quizzes and in-class responses. Discussing assigned topics in RESEARCHED ESSAY format that includes copy editing so there are NO MORE THAN TWO SENTENCE FORM ERRORS (run-ons, fragments, etc.), NO MORE THAN ONE SPELLING ERROR PER 250 WORDS, NO MORE THAN ONE PUNCTUATION ERROR PER PAGE, NOR MORE THAN TWO GRAMMAR ERRORS. Formatting the out-of-class essay according to MLA specifications. Incorporating material from other sources successfully

CORE COMPONENTS OF THE CLASS STUDENT NOTEBOOK--you are required to use a notebook (folder) to keep all materials relating to the course: A. Documents--Syllabus & Calendar B. Course Handouts C. Lecture/Discussion notes D. Information Quizzes E. Writing Assignments 1. Fair, draft copies of those turned in 2. Graded, returned essays ASSIGNMENTS--2 essays, 8 GFEs, a Mid-Term, & a Final. ATTENDANCE--Course withdrawals are the responsibility of the student. The RU Catalog lists the procedures for a
student to withdraw from one or all courses and will be upheld. Students who fail to correctly process course withdrawal(s) by the Last Day to Withdraw as found on the academic calendar will receive the grade their instructor determines they have earned. GRADING--I believe firmly in the "rewrite" process. You will be given the opportunity to improve your letter grade, if you so desire, after each "major" (out-of-class) paper assignment. Out of class Essays (2) 50% Good-Faith Efforts (GFEs) 20% Mid-Term & Final (10 pts. each) 20% Attendance & Participation 10% 100%
