DESIGNING CLASS III RPDS

WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN I & II vs. III?

????? How supported. Impressions needed. Direct retainers used Denture base material Indirect retention needs

How supported. Essentially Teeth

Impressions needed.

Single impression that is usually alginate.

Direct retainers used.

Anything goes but usually a cast clasp of some sort.

Denture base retention

Since relining tooth bounded edentulous areas isn't a usual concern one may if need be use a metal base as opposed to mesh. Mesh is still needed if you need to replace loss of alveolar bone with acrylic an acrylic ange.

Indirect retention needs

Since the edentulous area is supported at both ends with rests and direct retention then no rotary movement and thus no need for I.R.

1. Where place rests?

1. Adjacent to tooth bounded edentulous area. 2. Distribute stress or support M.C.

Where are guide planes located?

How eective do you think the G.P.s on the mesial of the cuspids will be compared to those on the posterior teeth? CAUTION! Dont extend your guide plane preparation any further than halfway to the facial of anterior teeth or you will remove the proximal height of contour and ruin the esthetics of these teeth.

What major connector should I use? First ask your self why cant I use a ? for each arch. LIGUAL BAR ON MANDIBLE A-P BAR ON MAXILLAE
Know the factors which enter into selection of M.C.!

REMEMBER: in modication areas you must have the M.C. extending across the space and not leave it as meshwork only which is not strong enough to unite the parts.

DENTURE BASE RETENTION

What are your needs???? -space -alveolar bone replacement -esthetics

Direct Retainers

No fulcrum line so anything goes. Try and keep simple and cast of some sort. What situation might dictate the need for W.W.?

RECIPROCATION Whatever ts the bill!

INDIRECT RETENTION Needed in Class III?

MINOR CONNECTOR Make sure everything is connected to the major connector.
