Holiday awareness
It is Halloween, and the children will be out knocking on your door seeking treats. They will be dressed up in the best costumes they could imagine. Many will be accompanied by parents who might also be in costumes. But Halloween is not just about costumes and treats and tricks. Halloween, according to history.com, is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. On this day, people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. Pope Gregory III designated Nov. 1 as All Saints Day in the eighth century a time to honor saints and martyrs. The evening of All Hallows Eve gradually became what we now know as Halloween. Because the saints and martyrs were dead, many costumes and themes once focused around ghosts, skeletons and all things dead. Now, kids dress as action figures, presidents, fairies, animals and more. But lets go one step further. Halloween is a community day, a day when neighbors reach out to neighbor kids with candy and sweet things. When I was a kid, a neighbor couple rigged up a spook house in their basement every year. We had to go through it blindfolded and our hands were put into bowls of peeled grapes that we were told were eyeballs. Spaghetti served as innards, and ghosts popped out of corners. At 10 years of age, I knew it was all fake but we loved going through it. Later, Halloween was an excuse to have a party and play spin the bottle and post office. Even as an adult, I attended a Halloween party or two. Now, I stay home and hand out candy to the neighbor kids. Halloween seems to mark the beginning of the holiday season. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and New Years Day are all important celebrations. It is a time for family, joy, giving and celebraTo FRIEDEL-HUNT, Pg. 3B

This 23-year-old potter has the exuberance and enthusiasm of youth, with the drive and determination of a seasoned artist. Katlyn Koester looked every bit the artist when we met. Her porcelain skin and luminous eyes were highlighted by a splashy orange shirt, topped with a blue-andwhite T-shirt and a red-patterned scarf, artistically draped around her neck. Her look is convincing and she has the finely crafted pottery to back it up. Koester grew up in Arbor Vitae where she and her parents still occupy the same family home. During her childhood, her mother often directed the children in craft projects and provided encouragement in every form of art. She tried it all. Koesters grandmother taught her to quilt and the first quilt she made still graces her bed. Her two cats find it a warm place to snuggle and can be found there during the day. Koester was able to take pottery classes at school when she was in the sixth grade. She enjoys showing the first piece she made, which she keeps handy in her To KOESTER, Pg. 2B

YMCA offers Walk With Ease class
YMCA of the Northwoods Eagle River Program Center began the Arthritis Foundation Walk With Ease class Tuesday, Nov. 1. The class will teach participants how to safely make physical activity part of their everyday life. According to the Y, the evidence-based program is designed for people with or without arthritis young and old, male and female, fit and not so fit. Coordinators stated that the class is based on research and tested programs in exercise science, behavior change and arthritis management and has been shown to increase balance, strength and walking pace; reduce the pain and discomfort of arthritis; improve overall health; and build confidence to be physically active. The class will be taught by Jolene Schirmacher, who is a certified Walk With Ease leader. The program can be modified to meet the needs of individual participants, so that persons can develop an exercise routine that fits their goals. Research shows that walking is not only good for joints, but also helps improve the health of the heart, lungs and bones, said Alison Eschweiler of the Arthritis Foundation, Upper Midwest Region, Wisconsin Chapter. Walking can also help manage weight which can reduce ones risk for arthritis in the knee, heart disease and diabetes. If you can be on your feet for 10 minutes without increased pain, you will most likely have success with Walk With Ease. The six-week Walk With Ease program will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays for six weeks from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. at Northland Pines High School. The cost is $10 for YMCA members and $15 for the general public and will include the class, a Walk With Ease book and incentives. Trees For Tomorrow to feature Green Fire documentary film

The documentary film Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for our Time will be shown Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 6:30 p.m. in the Education Hall, Forest/Wildlife Classroom at the Trees For Tomorrow Natural Resources Specialty School, located at 519 Sheridan St. E. in Eagle River. The U.S. Forest Service worked with the Aldo Leopold Foundation to celebrate two conservation legacies from the 20th century the Weeks Act and the land ethic developed, espoused and lived by Aldo Leopold. Green Fire is the first feature-length documentary to be made about the environmentalist, highlighting his extraordinary career and tracing his influence over the modern environmental movement. Leopold may be best known as author of the conservation classic, A Sand County Almanac, but is also renowned as an educator, forester and wilderness advocate. The high-definition 76minute-long documentary was produced by the foundation in partnership with the Center for Humans and Nature and the U.S. Forest Service. President William Howard Taft signed the Weeks Act into law March 1, 1911, bringing about major changes to the way national forests were established. The legislation permitted the federal government to purchase private land in order to protect the headwaters of rivers and watersheds in the eastern United States and called for fire protection efforts through federal, state and private cooperation. To date, nearly 20 million acres of forestland have been protected by the Weeks Act. The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest was created under the act. The act also paved the way toward restoring the cut-down, burned-over and farmed-out lands of the eastern United States. Artists schedule meeting Nov. 8

The Northern Wisconsin Decorative Artists will meet Tuesday, Nov. 8, at 9:30 a.m. at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Eagle River. Following a brief meeting, a class in reverse oil painting, featuring Chickadee on Glass, will be taught by Catherine Cole. The class fee is $10 and a kit fee of $5 will provide the use of a quill pen, India ink and oil paints. Supplies needed are brushes, brush cleaner and an 8- by 10-inch piece of glass, not plexiglass. Koester: artist has won many awards

room. It is colorful and crude, but demonstrates early signs of an artistic leaning. I keep it around to remind me where I came from, she said. Between sixth and seventh grades, Koesters father took her on the Northwoods Art Tour. They visited Joan Slacks River Run Gallery in McNaughton, where the youthful Koester could see commerce and art come together in a productive way. She signed up for private lessons with Slack and was hooked. While attending Lakeland Union High School in Minocqua, she participated in seven semesters of pottery classes. She landed the position of an apprentice at River Run Gallery and found out how much work was involved in the production of ceramics. She mixed glazes, reclaimed clay, dusted, swept, mopped and occasionally helped customers. She fell in love with Viterbo University while visting her brother La Crosse and chose it for her college education. She received a bachelor of fine arts degree in studio art (which includes any art forms not in theater or music.) I thought I wanted to be a teacher when I started school, but realized its not for me, Koester explained. The thing about making ceramics is handling the material. As you work with it, you can see your fingerprints, watch as the piece takes shape. After painting and glazing it, you see the finished piece. The first fair Koester participated in was the Franciscan Fest during college. Everyone dressed in the costumes of the day. Some were dressed as monks, said Koester, who wore a heavy, long dress and thought about the labor-intensive production of pottery in the 13th and 14th centuries. I knew then that I wanted to make pottery my entire life. Her next major lesson came in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina at the Penland School of Crafts, a national center for craft education, dedicated to helping people live creative lives. Since then, she has made strides in her craft through associations with local potters Amy Higgason, Tammy Lauder, John and Vicki Langer and her mentor, Joan Slack. In her short career, Koester has won numerous awards, including the WT Graham Youth Art Award, the VAC (Visual Arts Classic) Awards in state and regional competition, where she has consistently taken first, second or honorable mention every time she entered. She has exhibited her work in the St. Germain Art Fair, Walk in the Woods, Artarama, in Eagle River, Art on Main in Three Lakes and the Arbor Vitae Kiwanis Club arts and crafts show. Her work (mugs, cups, wine glasses, vases, pitchers, jewelry and bowls) is available at Bosackis Chocolate and More at the Boardwalk in Minocqua. The Three Lakes Center for the Arts will be exhibiting her pottery throughout November . Red kettle campaign begins Nov. 18

The Salvation Armys annual red kettle campaign is slated to begin Friday, Nov. 18, the opening weekend of the gun deer hunting season. The Salvation Army offers clothing, emergency housing, heating and electric opportunities, nursing home visitation and other aid to Vilas County and the surrounding area. The Salvation Army had its start in 1865 and the bellringing campaign began in 1891 when Capt. Joseph McFee wanted to host a meal for the poor in the San Francisco, Calif., area during the Christmas season. The red kettle campaign stemmed from an idea he remembered from his early days as a sailor in Liverpool, England, where a large ket-

tle had been placed where boat passengers could toss coins to help the poor. Other services offered by The Salvation Army statewide now include utility assistance, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, correctional services and homeless shelters. This years honorary chairman is Eagle River Mayor Jeff Hylsop and kettle coordinators are Howard Sauerman, Joe Eisele, Christine Caz and Gary Fawcett. Last year the campaign raised $20,000. Organizers said they are working hard to achieve this years goal of $25,000 so that no family will be without food or shelter, that no child will face Christmas without Santa and that no one will feel forgotten in the season of joy. Kettle coordinator Sauerman said, Were already off to good start.

The group has collected $5,000 as a result of donations from POPs River Music Revival held in Eagle River this past July along with funds donated by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans in addition to monies collected from ringing bells on the Fourth of July. These funds are for emergency relief in Vilas County, including emergency food, shelter and meals, transportation, utilities, health care and clothing. Everything given stays in Vilas County, Sauerman stated. Bell ringers will be out at five area locations including Trigs, Nelsons Ace Hardware, Pamida, Pick n Save and Walgreens until Christmas Eve with the exception of Thanksgiving Day and Mondays. We have over 200 people ringing bells every year, said

Sauerman. Most area churches get involved, along with many service groups. Northland Pines High School students are the backbone of our campaign. He expressed appreciation for all those who donate their time to help with the bellringing effort. Anyone can volunteer to be a bell ringer. To volunteer, contact Prince of Peace Lutheran Church at (715) 479-9263. One-time contribution pins, called the Bucket Pass, will again be available for $25. The Bucket Pass started last year and some communities have great success with it, Sauerman explained. Donations also can be sent to Salvation Army, P.O. Box 1226, Eagle River, WI 54521. The YMCA of the Northwoods will run a bus trip to Fanny Hill Dinner Theater and the Oakwood Mall in Eau Claire Thursday, Dec. 1. The holiday play Have a RUDYful Christmas will get you into the holiday spirit, said trip coordinator Marilyn Duschl. This is the third year we have traveled to Fanny Hill for their holiday performance. The plays have been hilarious, professionally done and the food is fabulous, said Duschl. Following the theater per-

formance, the bus will travel to Oakwood Mall for about two hours of shopping. The coach bus will leave the Rhinelander Y at 8:30 a.m. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. with the play to follow. Following shopping, the bus will return to Rhinelander at approximately 9 p.m. The cost for the trip is $75 to include coach bus, lunch and theater ticket. Seats are limited. your home is one of the kindest things you can do. There is another group who might need your attention this year. I am speaking about those who have lost their jobs. Money is tight for many, but the jobless still want to get gifts for their kids. Little toddlers and young children do not understand joblessness. 15th Warm The Children program accepting donations for winter clothing
Donations for the 15th annual Warm The Children (WTC) program are off to a good start toward this years goal to raise more than $50,000 and in turn will provide new winter clothing to more than 500 children in need in Vilas County and the Three Lakes and Sugar Camp areas in Oneida County. Program purchases, with the help of volunteer shoppers, began this week. Although the spending limit is $120 for children age 2 to 17 and $60 for children younger than 2, the discounts given by Pamida and Gliks are 10% and 25% respectively. Combined with the sales tax being waived, the discounts will help to stretch the value each child will receive to approximately $170 and $85 for each age group. The stores will give the discount on all regular-priced items. Sale items that are already discounted will not receive the additional discount. Donations toward the goal of $50,000 to the WTC fund have now reached approximately $8,236.61, according to News-Review Publisher Kurt Krueger. Anonymous donations totaled $375; donations totaling $7,861.61 were received from residents of the following communities: Arbor Vitae Kenneth and Anna Marie Zersen in memory of Kimberly Ann Lange. Nicolet sets open house for adult students

Adults interested in attending college are welcome to attend an open house at Nicolet Area Technical College Thursday, Nov. 3. The Returning to Learning event will run from 4:30 to 7 p.m. in the Northwoods Center on the Rhinelander campus. A variety of topics will include how to enroll; pay for college; balance school, work and family; and determine what to study. Informal roundtable discussions will begin every 30 minutes on these topics and others. Information booths also will be available. Adults currently taking classes at Nicolet will be on hand to share their experiences about what it is like to be a college student later in life. Those attending will have the opportunity to tour the colleges labs and classrooms, meet instructors and get a hands-on feel for taking classes online. Trees For Tomorrow building renamed to honor Juday family

Trees For Tomorrow has announced the renaming of the former education building located on its campus as Juday Hall. From this day forward, said Maggie Bishop, executive director, Juday Hall will be a reminder to all who enter its doors of the long-term commitment and support from the Juday family. Juday Hall will be open to the public for meetings, conferences, retreats, weddings, training events and any other campus events. With this building, added Bishop, we become a true partner in the community. According to Bishop, the hall is one of the historical buildings on campus and provides a serene and positive environment. AARP to offer driver safety class

Registration is now under way for an AARP drivers safety class slated Monday, Nov. 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a noon break for lunch, at the Oneida County Senior Center, located at 1101 Thayer St. in Rhinelander. AARP will offer a nationwide program to provide the classes free of charge to all veterans of the Armed Forces of the United States. The opportunity for the free class is available to all veterans regardless of age, whether currently serving, formerly served or retired, who have served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard/Reserves or Coast Guard. Spouses, widows or widowers of veterans are eligible to take the course free of charge, as long as they present a valid military spouse identification such as a dependent identification card (DD Form 1172) or a membership card to organizations such as the American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars. AARP will enroll any individual who presents a valid form of military identification. All registrations for any given course will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The course, offered for both veterans and nonveterans, will be conducted by an AARP-trained instructor and sponsored by the Oneida County Senior Center. All instruction will focus on the challenges and changes facing drivers. A number of auto insurers may offer a premium discount to those who complete the course. While the course will be offered free of charge to veterans and their spouses, there will be a $12-per-person registration fee for nonveteran AARP members and $14 for nonmembers. If the Nov. 7 class fills, another class will be scheduled later in November. Those who wish to order lunch must notify the center no later than Friday, Nov. 4. Commission on Aging gives advice to caregivers

November is National Caregiver Month, an opportunity to recognize the many people who make it their job to provide caregiving services. The Vilas County Commission on Aging offered the following tips to those who help an older adult with something he or she used to do: Taking care of yourself is just as important as caring for your loved one. You will be able to provide better care for a longer period of time if you yourself are healthy. Involve the person being cared for in making decisions regarding his or her care. Sometimes this is not possible, but keeping the persons wishes in mind is very important. If someone offers to help, allow them the opportunity to help. It is good for all of you when friends or other family members help. Keeping a list of things you could use help with is a good idea as it allows the person to choose what he or she wants to do. Planning ahead will make caregiving easier in the future. Talk with the person you are caring for about money, medical care and legal issues. Complete power of attorney forms. Keep doctors names, medication list, insurance information and Social Security card where you can find them in case of emergency. Learning as much as possible about the persons illness or disease will help you be a better caregiver. Get information from your doctor, books, the Internet or the Aging & Disability Resource Center. It is normal to feel overwhelmed at times. If you become overwhelmed a lot or if you feel angry or lose your patience frequently, you should seek help from your doctor or a counselor. It is critical to develop a support system. Talking about your feelings with family or friends is important. Sharing with others who are going through similar experiences can be especially helpful. Consider attending a support group. Caregivers who get help are more likely to provide better care for a longer period of time. They also burn out less often. Consider hiring someone to assist with household chores, meal preparation, personal cares or respite care.

When former Three Lakes High School art teacher Jane Nieuwendorp retired, her first thoughts were about what she would do. Some of her ideas quickly came together after she purchased a camera with the monies she had received as a retirement gift. Nieuwendorp began to take nature photos to create greeting cards. The cards are sold through friends and some area shops for $2 each. That, however, is just the beginning. With proceeds raised from the greeting card sales, Nieuwendorp recently completed her first DVDs using her nature photos which she has set to music. Her intention is to donate the DVDs to medical centers, hospitals, hospice and other treatment centers for patients to view while undergoing various kinds of treatment such as dialysis or chemotherapy. I used to teach art and thought, Why not take those art talents to a different media? said Nieuwendorp. She stated that she wanted to dedicate the project to the memory of her father, who had hairy cell leukemia and has since passed away. Nieuwendorp raised enough funds not only to complete her first DVD, but also to purchase a DVD player. She will donate a player with the DVDs when none is available at a medical facility. If patients find some benefit from the DVDs or cards, Nieuwendorp has agreed to put their names on a list to receive a donated DVD of their own. Although she has just com-

pleted her first set of DVDs, Nieuwendorp has plans to make more. With winter approaching, she intends to take additional photos to add to her collection of summer, spring and fall photos. All of the funds needed for this project are raised solely by the sale of her photo greeting cards. Nieuwendorp will accept used jewel cases or DVD players in good condition as well as blank recordable DVDs for use in creating future donations.

The public can purchase a DVD for $10. Proceeds will be used to make more DVDs. Initial donations of the DVDs will be made in the North Woods area, however, Nieuwendorp intends to spread out to other areas in the future. Country group to perform at Three Lakes High School

The Three Lakes School/ Community Arts Association (TLSCAA) will host the country music group Branson On The Road Friday, Nov. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Three Lakes High School auditorium. The group boasts more than 20 years of experience touring the United States and abroad, delivering a variety of country, bluegrass, rockabilly and gospel music. Guitarist Debbie Horton holds the distinction of being the only woman to have played lead guitar for Johnny Cash. Among her credits, Horton has had her songs recorded by Wanda Jackson, Norma Jean and other country artists. Musician Donnie Wright plays fiddle, mandolin, guitar, banjo and bass. He has been part of the Branson, Mo., music scene for 40 years and has been nominated for a Lifetime Honors award for his contribution to music in the Ozarks by the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, D.C. Brian Capps plays upright bass and sings songs reminiscent of Marty Robbins and Hank Williams. His latest recording reached the top 10 on the Americana charts and is part of the music rotation on XM Radio. Legion sets vets dinner

School accepting orders for 2012 yearbook

As a new way to purchase 2012 yearbooks at Three Lakes High School, students will complete order forms at school which will be sent to Jostens, the yearbook printer. The school will send a statement detailing the order via mail to the students parents, who will have the opportunity to add to or delete any part of the order. This simple method will eliminate the need for students to take money to the school, and it will allow parents the opportunity to discuss purchase decisions with students at home, said Three Lakes advisor Kathleen Lanford. Yearbook payments can be made by mail, Internet or a toll-free service hotline. Additionally, the program allows parents the option of an installment payment plan. This is the only opportunity to purchase a yearbook this year, so be sure your student fills out the order form in school and then watch your mailbox for your yearbook statement, said Lanford. The Three Lakes Center for the Arts in the Northwoods Gallery will host an open house to view a new exhibit Thursday, Nov. 3, at 5 p.m. This month, the gallery will feature the pottery works of Tammy Lauder of St. Germain, the watercolors of David Sorgel and the multimedia works of Nancy Paquet. The first Thursday of each month, the gallery, located at 1760 Superior St., has an open house from 5 to 7 p.m., welcoming everyone to meet the artists, partake of a glass of wine and view the new exhibit. After the town tree-lighting ceremony Friday, Nov. 25, the theater will show the movie Polar Express. The public is welcome to construct a gingerbread house during the showing. All supplies, with instructors, will be on hand to create this holiday decor.

Three Lakes students receive academic awards

Students, parents, administration, faculty and school board members of Three Lakes High School gathered at the Reiter Center for the 13th annual academic banquet Oct. 23. Students were awarded academic letters or bronze, silver or gold medals according to their semester gradepoint averages. The first six points earn a student a letter, then the next six points, a bronze medal, with a gold being the highest, worth 24 points. This years guest speaker was Three Lakes High School alumna Marci Kerner. She graduated from UW-Madison with a kinesiology degree. Now, Kerner helps patients at Ministry Saint Marys Hospital in Rhinelander. Kerner spoke of the values she learned at an early age of giving to others, adding that people learn from listening, not speaking. She advised the

Local businesses help students raise funds for class trip to D.C.
With the help of local businessmen Dave Zawistowski, Glenn Schiffmann and Dave Cox, Three Lakes eighth-grade students recently sold nearly 5,000 pounds of cranberries from Lake Nokomis Cranberry Marsh at Cranberry Fest to help fund a spring trip to Washington, D.C. Zawistowski supported the students by rigging up a hopper of freshly harvested berries and providing the youths with scoops, bags and scales. Schiffmann and Cox of Custom Components provided the students with a site at Cranberry Fest to sell the berries. Last week, the class met Zawistowski and thanked him during a tour of the Lake Nokomis operation. Zawistowski said he enjoyed helping the students and commended their fundraising efforts, while Three Lakes paraprofessional Peggy Bennett said the students were appreciative of the help. The students have been inspired by the generous donation of cranberries by Zawistowski, and wanted to learn firsthand how cranberries are grown and harvested, said Bennett. The eighth-grade class then visited Schiffmann and Cox at Custom Components in Eagle River. Shaking hands with Glenn and Dave was a high point for many of the students, who realized the great location of their cranberry booth in proximity to the Cranberry Fest site was instrumental in helping them sell so many pounds of cranberries, said Bennett. In addition, many other community supporters have helped the class raise funds. The Three Lakes Volunteer Fire Department and ladies auxiliary have donated money in exchange for the students help with the Three Lakes Shoot-Out Radar Run and FlyIn and Pumpkin Fest events. Shane Dupuis of Tamarack Flowage Cranberry Marsh donated cranberries for the class to sell, while three families from an Antigo orchard donated 500 bags of apples, which were sold at Cranberry Fest and Pumpkin Fest. The students returned to school inspired and motivated to continue their fundraising efforts, said Bennett. They realized how generous their community is and how supported they are by many adults who dont even know them.

Benefit dinner set at Oneida Village

Eagle River Masonic Lodge 248 will host a benefit for its scholarship fund Friday, Nov. 4, from 4:30 to 9 p.m. at Oneida Village Inn in Three Lakes. The benefit dinner will include all-you-can-eat fish or chicken with homemade desserts. The cost for the dinner will be $9 for adults and $5 for youths younger than 12. Cake auction set to fund class trip

The Three Lakes Junior High School eighth-grade class will host the third annual cake auction Friday, Nov. 4. Viewing and bidder registration will begin at 6 p.m. in the commons, while the auction itself will start at 7 p.m. Robert St. Louis again will be the auctioneer. The class will hold the auction to raise money for an educational class trip next spring to Washington, D.C. Last year the auction netted more than $3,200. The students need to raise about $36,000 throughout the year through various fundraisers for the entire class to go on the trip. Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy the fun, said coordinator Peggy Bennett. Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted. The Buzz on B provided the great wines and gourmet coffee and the Forest Lake Country Store provided some of Wisconsins finest beers. Friends announce quilt winner, sale

The Plum Lake Public Library has announced that the winner of the Friends of the Librarys Evening Pines quilt was Terry Kautz of Sayner and Tucson, Ariz. The Friends will hold its annual pie sale at the Christmas Fest slated Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Sayner community building. The Friends also will sell crafts, pecans, sweat shirts and totes. The fest will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with other crafters, homemade soups, brats, hot dogs and chili by the Plum Lake Womans Club, raffles, a cookie sale, book sale and more.

Christmas Bazaar set at community center

Local crafters will be on hand to showcase their talents for the Christmas Bazaar Saturday, Nov. 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the St. Germain Community Center, located on Highway 155. The bazaar will feature handmade jewelry, original design folk art, American Girl doll fashions, wood doll furniture, personalized ornaments, Holiday centerpieces, candles and hand-made soaps. This event is a joint community effort by several St. Germain Community Organizations, along with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Northwoods. Santa & Mrs. Claus will visit area children to receive wish lists and hand out treats from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Parents are welcome to bring cameras for Christmas photos. This years Holiday Gourmet Gift Corner will feature favorites like Toffee For You, offering a delectable homemade butter toffee sure to please anyone on your giftgiving list, and Tastefully Simple, featuring easy-to-prepare food items and gift baskets, said event organizers Lois Ruediger. New this year will be homemade BBQ Sauce by local chef Pat Hoffman and artician goat-milk cheeses and bakery from Hillbilly Hollow of Conover. The UCC Church youth group will sell fresh wreaths and garland for holiday business or home decoration, while the local Boy Scouts will sell flavored and microwavable popcorn. The Sayner-St. Germain Fish and Wildlife Club and the St. Germain Womens Service Club will prepare homemade pies, breads, cookies and bars for the bake sale at the main entrance. Big Brothers Big Sisters will have a food stand, offering sandwiches, hot dogs, homemade soups donated by local restaurants and Christmas cookies. Local author Connie Falk of St. Germain will hold a booksigning for her children's book, Gold Stars and Daydreams. There will be door-prize drawings and bucket raffles throughout the day. All proceeds from this event will benefit the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Northwoods mentoring program, which serves children in need of adult role models. Linda has run the credit recovery SWEET program in the summer. She has been part of the staff for 10 years at the Phoenix Center. For the past 5 years she has also run the FIT after-school tutoring program at the ERES. Providing students with fun, targeted assistance in Reading and Math requires organization, knowledge and commitment. Additionally, Ryan Clark, teacher at the Phoenix Center, stated Something that I think wraps her up as employee at Northland Pines, is every summer she comes in and cleans the Phoenix Center. She is an extremely hard working employee, an ambassador in our community for this district, she cares about the students, and has an uncanny ability to build and foster a relationship with some of our most at-risk students. The rapport she has with students, families and staff is exceptional! Linda is a wonderful asset to the Northland Pines School District and she truly deserves this award. John Sarama reported the Finance Committee meeting minutes were distributed in the board packet. Jim Mulleady reported the Policy, Curriculum & Education Committee did not meet in the month of September. YMCA Report was included in the electronic board packet. The Board requested that Mike Richie asks someone from the Y to attend the October regular board meeting to give the Board an update on Y status and membership. Administrators Reports Mike Richie reported on the following topics: Opening 2011-12 school year; Enrollment update including Open Enrollment; Charter School Meeting update; Points of Pride for Northland Pines. Richie noted there are several informational items attached to the public view of the electronic board packet. Discussion/Action Items: Payment of Bills MOTION by Eric Neff that the Board approves the payment of bills according to the summary check register dated 08/13/11 09/18/11 in the amount of $1,151,680.08. Phelps Snowmobile Club wins, sells new Ski-Doo

The Phelps Snowmobile Club recently sold its 2011 Ski-Doo GSX 600 HD E-Tec snowmobile, which it won last spring after taking part in the Ski-Doo Club Support program. For each member who visited a dealership, the program gave participating clubs $10 and a chance to win a snowmobile. Our club vigorously promoted the program at our club meetings and made individual calls to members to insure our members visited dealerships, said Phelps Snowmobile Club President Dick Schulz. Ski-Doo contacted the club last spring, saying it could choose a sled from the local dealership, Ramesh Motorsports in Land O Lakes. For further funding, the club then sold the Ski-Doo to Lela Laurent of Cary, Ill., who took delivery of the sled Oct. 22. We thanked Ski-Doo directly for being the only manufacturer to offer a program that supports both

Phelps library to present two movies

The Phelps public library will show the movie Water for Elephants, starring Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon, Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 2 p.m. The film is rated PG13. The movie Cars 2, rated G, will be shown Saturday, Nov. 5, at 10 a.m. The movie features the voices of Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy. Both films will be shown free of charge and popcorn will be served.
