TWILIGHT MARKETS The Canowindra Night Markets were a great success on Saturday night 22 October. People of all ages enjoyed so much of what the town has to offer. Tom Ward, President of the Canowindra @home committee would like to thank all the people who contributed to make it such a great night: the stallholders; Nerida Cuddy who organised all of the music for the night as well as singing herself - we are lucky to have such talented people in our town; the SES - what a fantastic service they are to the community and without their can do attitude and assistance on the night we would not be

able to have the markets; Cabonne Council Councillors and workers who made sure the park was looking fantastic on the night. It is great that you take such pride in the town and was certainly noticed how great it all looked; Canowindra Preschool who entertained the many kids during the day and night; the Canowindra@home committee who put so much effort into all of these events. Mr Ward commented, It is fantastic to be involved with so many people who take great pride in presenting the food, wine and hospitality that the region has to offer. We look forward to the next markets in April 2012. Cox concert, and Womindra at tasteCanowindra; attending a Year 5 lesson at Canowindra Public School and the students are now doing project on Mongolia after their visit. Since their arrival in June this year, the team has gone from 29 to 19 members, and although they have thoroughly enjoyed themselves, they have families and children at home who they miss very much, have been here for 5 months after initial 3 month project. Bob and Margaret Craven have been like a second home for them providing breakfasts and lunches for them for the duration of their stay, they will be sorely missed. Grant Hendrickson, the Chief Geophysicist from Canada, said We would like to thank the people of Canowindra for having us in their town over the past few months. It is such an easy, friendly place to live, the entire crew has really enjoyed their time here. Goodbye and have a safe journey home, your time here in our community was valued greatly and we hope you have some lovely stories to take home to your families.

Above: the Mongolian geophysicists and technicians at Hamiltons Bluff at a farewell barbecue hosted by Jamie and Julia Andrews who was their coordinator over the last few months.
DEPARTURE Over the next couple of days the Mongolian geophysicists and technicians will be packing up and heading home. The team have immersed themselves in Canowindras culture and social life: learning our language; attending and performing at folk@canowindra afternoons, the Kerrianne

I would like to thank Tamara Hargraves for the running of Birth to Kinder program for Canowindra. Toby & I attended a few of the sessions & they were just wonderful. The success of Birth to Kinder has now finished for the year. We would like to pass on our thanks Tamara Hargraves for her time & effort in recognising this age group, obtaining the hall at Canowindra Public School for this time & bringing mothers, carers & children together. The craft activities, singing, morning tea, dance, books & nursery rhymes were so well organised, thought out & beautifully presented. It is such a precious age group & good to see that although only a small number some weeks, it is another positive experience for the children of Canowindra. We hope to see this program again. Many thanks, Alison Stephens, Canowindra
COMMUNITY GARDEN A WINNER Passionate organic gardener and host of the popular SBS series Costas Garden Odyssey, Costa Georgiadis, officially opened the gates (made from recycled bicycles by local teacher Mark Edwards) to the new Canowindra Community Garden last Thursday 27 October. This archway represents everything about community gardens to me, he said with enthusiasm. On one side we have a beat up, compacted old car park, but through this archway we go into a beautiful new world we have created together! Over the course of the day, every student in Canowindra, from pre-school to high school, planted a vegetable seed in the garden and was engaged and entertained by Costa as he spoke about the importance of community and of growing fresh, seasonal, healthy food. Cabonne Council was represented by Councillor Kevin Walker, who had the honour of planting the first tomato of the season. The Canowindra Community Garden, centrally located in an vacant block next to the Uniting Church, began to take shape just three weeks ago when an army of volunteers turned up to set up boundary fences, chop back weeds, lay out garden beds and mulch to be ready for planting this Thursday. Mulch and fencing wire was donated by local farmers, equipment from local contractors and compost from a local mill. The site was chosen in part due to the proximity to the primary schools. We hope that it will become a really great educational resource for the schools and the wider community, says garden co-ordinator Chris Cuddy. Much of the produce from the garden will be provided to low income families through the Uniting Churchs Food Basket next door. There is a Community Garden working group, which has representatives from the CWA, Landcare, the Uniting Church, the Garden Club, teachers and parents from all the schools, and other community members. The Canowindra Community Garden, approximately 600sqm in size, has been designed around a simple spiral path to entice people in to the garden and to created ample planting space. The garden is planted predominately with edibles vegetables, fruits and herbs and includes raised beds, composting, worm farms and communal spaces. Huge thanks to Bill and Janice Paul for tickets sales and our MC for the night, Grant Cummings. RTA MEETS CYCLISTS Local cycling issues will be the topic of a forum for bicycle groups in Western NSW next week. The Member for Dubbo Troy Grant said the RTA is meeting with bicycle groups at the Regional Cycling Consultative Forum (RCCF) held next Thursday in Parkes. Mr Grant said the forum is being held for the community to discuss cycling concerns and provide feedback to the RTA and local councils on existing cycle facilities. The open forum will be led by the RTA and will concentrate on the Western NSW area, Mr Grant said. It will include a presentation on changing community attitudes towards bike riding. In addition a number of the action points agreed upon at the inaugural forum in June will be revisited. The RCCF initiative started earlier this year and aims to bring together community stakeholders, local councils, the RTA and other NSW Government agencies. The forum will help with the planning of cycling initiatives in regional areas and address local needs and concerns of bicycle users. The RTA values local community opinion and wants feedback to help with the decision making process when planning cycleways across NSW. The forum on Thursday 3 November will be held at Bushmans Motor Inn, Newell Highway, Parkes between 9am and 4pm. Cyclists must register for the forum by emailing western_projects@rta.nsw.gov.au

HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS CLEANOUT Cabonne Shire Council is soon to participate in the regional Household Chemicals Cleanout Campaign. If people have unwanted, out-of-date or unknown household chemicals in the home or garden shed, then these pose a hazard to humans, especially children. They can also harm the environment, said Mayor Bob Dowling. We encourage Cabonne residents to properly dispose of such chemicals etc by taking them to Canowindra Tip on Sunday 6 November between 8am and noon. Items that can be taken to Canowindra Tip on 6 November include: Pesticides and garden chemicals (eg. weed killers), Paint and solvents (eg. paint stripper), house chemicals (eg. Bleach, detergents, pest baits etc), smoke detectors, fluorescent lightglobes and tubes, batteries, gas cylinders, and fire extinguishers. Councils typically do not accept these items on an ongoing basis. Here is your chance to cleanout your garden shed or under the kitchen sink. The service is free for local residents and for businesses with small quantities - the first 20kg or 20 litres can be disposed of free of charge. Local businesses with quantities larger than 20 litres or 20 kg can contact Councils staff on 6392 3273 to ask if any charges would be applied to larger quantities, depending on the type of materials. The program is being coordinated throughout the central west region by NetWaste, with support from the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH). A PASSION FOR MUSIC The Paganini Duo, Gustaw Szelski violin and Georg Mertens guitar, play Gypsy favourites from Hungary, Russia, Romania, Spain and South America. The Duo was formed in 1989 when Georg visited the Blue Mountains and filled in for Gustaw's accompanist who had suddenly taken ill. They got together a new program of music for violin and guitar instead of violin and piano. In 1997 they formed the Blue Mountains Trio with pianist Gavin Tipping and recorded their successful CD Music for Grand Dinning. In the following years they continued to play as a duo, but their work with other groups dominated. Several years later they decided to make the duo a more permanent group and started to perform more regularly. The focus of the duo is Gypsy music the music of their background. The Paginini Duo has done several interstate tours and a tour to South East Asia in 1999. They currently hold regular monthly concerts in Jenolan Caves. Book now on 02 6344 2332 for the performance and meal for only $70pp.

It is a shame that the article, Phoenix 26 October "an elderly gentleman'', retained anonymity, as the literary skill and compassion of the writer should be recognised. Who wrote the article? The Canowindra Hotel Saturday 5 November - Live entertainment

SENIOR CRICKET Canowindra hosted Morongla on Saturday as the rain managed to stay away allowing a full game to be played. Canowindra lost the toss and were bowling first without regular captain and opening bowler Nick Guthrie. Brendan Traves and Pete Guthrie however picked up two early wickets and the visitors were 2/9 off six overs. Nick Traves was brought on and knocked the stumps over with his first ball and his brother Brendan picked up his second soon after and Morongla were 4/30. A middle order partnership put Canowindra on the back foot as the next wicket didnt fall until the 29th over. Alex Myers and Nick Traves worked hard and collected a couple of late wickets and Morongla finished on 145. Brendan Traves (2/14 off 11) was the pick of the bowlers with his brother Nick (3/46 off 11) also bowling well. Canowindra started badly in reply losing openers Pete Guthrie and Nic Whatman in the first 6 overs. Brendan Traves (19) and Mark Norman (26) gave some hope back to Canowindra but both lost their wicket in quick succession. Luke Smith (2) and Alex Myers (3) didnt last long before a nice partnership was built was between Shaun Craven (26) and young Harry Whatman (22 N.O) who batted extremely well. Canowindras tail end put in a gutsy performance, however didnt manage to get their in the end falling short by 30 runs. Next week Canowindra travel to Grenfell.

SWIMMING CLUB The early start to the season may have deterred some but swimming club started with the hardy ones on Friday night. In the 33m freestyle or spoon three swimmers improved out-of-sight and out of the semis. Caleb Giger and Max Coady dropped their times by 5 seconds before Lara Hawker took 3 seconds from hers. Jessica Bennett dropped her time by 2 seconds as she led from start to finish in the Spoon Final, just ahead of new swimmer Tori McKay who was just over a second behind. Another new swimmer, Coralie Grieve was in lane 6 in the relay who touched first but all Lane 6 swimmers swam faster than their handicap times so the relay went to Lane 1. Relay pennant winners were Amara Flannery, Molly Grant, Mitchell Stanley, Max Coady, Claire Wright and Caleb Giger. Swimmers dont forget to sign the book before Wednesday afternoon and be ready to swim by 5:45pm on Friday.
