Someone in this post (Acer Aspire One Specifications and Windows XP Drivers) ask me to write a tutorial about how to install Windows XP using USB flash disk/flash drive. If you want to install Windows XP, but your notebook (or PC) has no CDROM, you should install Windows XP using USB Flash disk/Flash Drive/Thumb drive... just follow this guide :

step 1: Buy an USB Flash Drive (at least 2GB). When you do this tutorial, please make sure your computer/laptop/PC has a CD-ROM (or DVD). so, now you have 2 computers, with CD-ROM support and without CD-ROM support (e.g Acer Aspire One, Asus EEE-PC).

step 4: Insert your USB Flash Drive. When I made this tutorial, I was using 4GB Transcend USB FlashDrive...
Locate folder C:\Komku\PeToUSB\ double click PeToUSB.exe
a window will appear like this...

Destination Drive : select USB Removable check on Enable Disk Format check on Quick Format check on Enable LBA (FAT 16x) Drive Label : XP-KOMKU (or whatever you want) then click Start
Click Yes to continue....
"You are about to repartition and format a disk. Disk: .... All existing volumes and data on that disk will be lost. Are You Sure You Want To Continue?" click Yes
Wait a few seconds...

Click OK, and you can close PeToUSB window.
step 5: Open Command Prompt ... Click Start > Run > type cmd > click OK
On Command Prompt window, go to directory C:\Komku\bootsect\ how to do this? first type this cd\ and press Enter
then type cd komku\bootsect and press Enter
the result...
Don't close Command Prompt window, and go to step 6...
step 6: on command prompt window, type bootsect /nt52 H:

H: is drive letter for my USB Flash Drive, it may be different with yours...
and press Enter the result... "Successfully updated filesystem bootcode. Bootcode was succesfully updated on all targeted volumes."
don't close Command Prompt window, and go to step 7...
step 7: now type this cd.. and press Enter
then type cd usb_prep8 and press Enter

4) Make New Tempimage with XP LocalSource and Copy to USB-Drive 5) Use Existing Tempimage with XP LocalSource and Copy to USB-Drive F) Change Log File - Simple OR Extended, currently [Simple] Q) Quit Enter your choice:_
now, insert your original Windows XP CD, or Windows XP with sata ahci driver to your CD/DVD ROM and back to Command Prompt window type 1 then press Enter... "Browse For Folder" window will appear, select your CD/DVD drive and click OK
the result... "XP Setup Source Path" changed to G:\ (yours may be different)
now for point 2, if letter T is currently assigned to a drive in your computer, you must change it.... if not, leave it as it is how to change it? type 2 and press Enter...

"Enter Available Virtual DriveLetter" for example you doesn't have drive S so you type S and press Enter back to usb_prep8 welcome screen... now type 3 and press Enter...
"Please give Target USB-Drive Letter e.g type U" Enter Target USB-Drive Letter: because my Flash drive letter is H
so, type H and press Enter... after back to usb_prep8 welcome screen... now type 4 and press Enter to make new temporary image with XP LocalSource and copy it to USB Flash Drive please wait a few seconds..
"WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE T: WILL BE LOST! Proceed with Format (Y/N)?" type Y and press Enter please wait.... when format virtual disk complete, press any key to continue...
please wait... making of LocalSource folder is in progress...

"Copy TempDrive Files to USB-Drive in about 15 minutes = Yes OR STOP = End Program = No" Click Yes, and wait...
"Would you like USB-stick to be preferred Boot Drive U: bla... bla..." Click Yes

"Would you like to unmount the Virtual Drive ?" Click Yes, wait a few seconds, and press any key.... press any key again to close usb_prep8...
Now, your USB Flash Drive is ready...
step 9: Now, insert your USB Flash Drive/Flash Disk/Thumb Drive to your notebook (e.g Acer Aspire One) go to BIOS and make USB HDD (or USB ZIP in some other machine) as primary boot device.... then boot form your USB Flash Drive.... and select "TXT Mode Setup Windows XP, Never unplug USB-Drive Until After Logon"
After Hard Disk detected, delete all partition, create single partition... and install Windows XP on that partition... and wait...

once text mode setup is complete, computer will restart.... this time select "GUI Mode setup Windows XP, Continue Setup + Start XP"
Continue Windows XP setup.... and Done! Windows XP Installed....
Remember, you can use this tutorial to install Windows XP on all other computers.. not just Aspire One and Asus EEE-PC.... good luck!

Anonymous said Trying to restore XPSP3 on Medion akoya MD96910 netbook. Worked fine until 99% of files copied then got: Setup cannot copy the file: iaahci.cat - giving 3 options (retry, skip, quit). Retry didn't work so skipped. Similar message for iaahci.inf iaStor.cat iaStor.inf iaStor.sys. Subsequent XP Boot then failed. I do not understand why the intelSATA drivers (these files) won't load. Will try again with Netbook Bios AHCI mode set to Disable but not confident that will make any difference. Help! Ref: MD96910 netbook restore. With AHCI mode disabled it works without loading the intelSATA files. I assume these will have to be loaded, just got to figure how to do that now! Thanks for great install guide - brilliant. UPDATE 3: Everyone please read this WinToFlash Guide - Install Windows XP from USB Flash drive UPDATE 4: NOTE TO ANYBODY WHO'S FLASH DRIVE CANNOT BE DETECTED... If you are in Vista or Windows 7 (Like Me) you have to Right-Click PeToUSB.exe, go to Properties, Compatibility Tab, and in Windows 7, choose RUN IN COMPATIBILITY MODE, and select Windows XP (Service Pack 3). In Vista, just do some kind of "xp" mode. Also, in Windows 7, Command Prompt will probably give you a "denied" message on one of the "CMD" commands. I couldn't install service pack 3 because i needed 1 megabyte free space (although i had 108 gig open ?? :D) and i couldn't install office. Rodney said... I have many versions of XP cd's and I noiced so far that the XP home OEM CD gives many errors of files not being copied in the beginning of the "making of LocalSource folder" step. When I use the XP Pro CD, I do not get this problem and the flash drive builds correctly. My EEE PC has 2 solid state drives, an 8GB and a 32GB. I have deleted all on both partitions and I am attempting to install XP on teh 8GB (Primary Master) and I'm getting an error telling me that setup cannot copy the files. I will try another build of XP Pro tomorrow to see if this helps. December 25, 2008 3:20 PM
Rodney said... To be more specific, when I used the XP home CD, until I noticed that there were errors when building the usb drive, the symptom was an error with biosinfo.inf not being able to load.. The new problem with my XP Pro Corporate image is after selecting the drive where I want to install the files, the drive formats and then give an error when copying files. No files can be copied, they all error and don't allow me to go any further. The first file error is "cannot copy file bootvid.dll" Like I said, I think this is the version of windows I'm using but I'm not sure. I'll try a regular store purchased xp pro sp1 tomorrow. Twigged after a while, windows had tried to create a duel boot in the boot.ini file which is located at the very root of your windows installation, so normally C:\boot.ini. To my immense disappointment I can't get it to reinstall Win XP despite very many different tries. I usually end up with an error message saying that windows couldn't start because hal.dll is missing or corrupt. (It's not missing and I doubt that is corrupted.) The only other thing that I can think of, is that I haven't deleted all of the partitions as the instructions appear to say. I did have 4 other partitions in addition to c: that I have deleted, but I am reluctant to go further (assuming that I could delete any of the remaining ones). Please give me your advice. Anyway). But Acer weren't very helpful in providing a bit of advice as to what to do with the drivers, once downloaded. As it turns out, only the flash drive is loaded as a possible installation point. I should note that my hard drive works properly. It is detected on bios and has a working installation which boots properly when the flash drive is not selected as a priority boot location. Anonymous said... hello, I had a question, i'm trying this method because my laptop won't read the xp cd i have. my other computer does and i have used this cd before to install windows, but: 1) when i use usb_prep8, and try to select the folder for windows source file, "browse for folder" window halts/freezes. 2) because of the problem in 1), i tried editing the "FolderSel" script so it returns the string of the drive where my cd is... after i got that working, when it's creating the image file, it says it can't find the files... what can do about this? any help or comment would be appreciated, thank you. I personally only get this message when I try to install on my Acer Aspire One A1101. Now I did try on my desktop and it went through to the choose the partitiion to install windows. which I added to this 2GB USB drive. It cannot setup in the drive,as free space is 1147MB required is about 1300MB. So, I decided to install in the laptop hard drive instead.It has 4 partitions, C: (0GB - 40GB); 40GB size,empty for xpsp3; D:(40GB-115GB); 75GB with vista; E: dvd-ram burner(not shown in setup) F:(115GB-165GB); 50GB empty; G:(165GB-220GB);55GB empty; unallocated space of 10GB(actually my lost Hp recovery drive afterI tried to install xp). I choose c:, as its beginning and also 40GB free. After initial txt setup runs smoothly,the GUI setup comes to a blue screen and suddenly restarts without any reason with no error display. Now there seems to be no error compared to my previous virtual memory paging quota issue, but I can see the mouse move, and blue screen, which is supposed to ask for key, etc,But it does not happen.The blue screencomes and imediately restarts my laptop.I have a hp dv4-1135ee e-sata p7350 2GB, and the best part is that the bios cannot be configured, it has minimal setting like boot device proirity. 1) Extracted WIN XP SP2( vvv imp do not try sp3, i tried and I failed all the time). 2) From ngine site, made the xp USB drive installable(usually it can only instal on HARd Drive). 3) Using Nlite, slipstreamed latest SATA drivers. 4) connected laptop drive through USB from portable drive USB-SATA interface. 5) Could install txt mode XP 6) Finally, GUI mode xp was setting up, BUT WAIT!!!!!, it restarted halfway(due to small virtual memory size)... 7)Log-onto safe-mode xp on next reboot 8)Goto control panel and system applet, select virtual memory page, and choose manually set, and set a good paging drive value. 9)Reboot and continue installation. HOWEVER, I feel the steps can be shortened, but others try and post replies.... 1)Extract WINXP SP2. 2)Using Nlite, slipstream latest SATA drivers. 3)Install XP SP2. 4) complete installation. 5) log on to xp and install SP3 Others try shortened method, only if unsuccessful then go for long method. Once XP and vista has bee installed, use a boot manager like GAG to boot between the two. April 08, 2009 3:53 AM

-use nlite(freeware) to create your own custom XP iso. http://www.nliteos.com/download.html -MAKE SURE you include an XP service pack 3(available in microsoft website) and all the acer aspire one drivers(available in acer website) in it. -mount the iso to a vitrual drive -use USB_MultiBoot_10 to make a bootable USB of XP by following method 1 of: http://wiki.eeeuser.com/windowsxpusb -install(at this point i'm pretty sure this will work because i had exactly the same problem as urs!)
im not really sure what the cause of our BSOD problem is, but my hypothesis is that acer aspire one wants you to install an XP that is compatible and can support its new hardwares - in short it doesn't want to be installed with an old version of XP. April 09, 2009 5:26 AM

DAS's way of installing worked for me, i also defeated that damn blue screen that almost made me cry while installing and researching the net for solution, i owe you a lot pal! i also think the problem was my xp installer since its quite old., i slipstreamed service pack 3 from sp 1 on my nlited xp.

Anonymous said... OK I did this on an older HP computer, with XPPro SP3 slipstreamed in the installation files. This was after installing a new (refurb), blank 40GB IDE hard drive. It went smooth as silk, except now the computer won't boot unless I have the USB stick installed. If I leave it out and turn on the computer, I get "Disk Error Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL". I'm sure this is something stupid with the bootsector, but having a brain fart right now as to what to do. Like I said, If I leave the USB plugged in, it boots and runs perfectly (I can also unplug the USB after windows is booted and it works fine). Twigged after a while, windows had tried to create a duel boot in the boot.ini file which is located at the very root of your windows installation, so normally C:\boot.ini. Here is the solution. (This may have happened because in optimizing XP down, some files were deleted). 1. From Windows install disk goto E:\I386 folder and open open (Double click) on the FP40EXT.CAB file. It should open. (or - if you do not have the disk, find a working XP computer and go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\40 \bin). 2. find fp4autl.dll in the list and copy it (ctrl-c) 3. go to c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\web server extensions\40\bin and paste it (ctrl-v) 4. Safwan Khan said... No need to do all this mess! Just copy the i386 folder form the Windows XP disk into your flash drive, and start setup from Windows XP CD-ROM. During the setup, anytime eject the CD and it will prompt you to give a location for the setup files, at that moment plug your flash drive in(of course DOS MODE USB should be enabled through bios) and the next drive letter after the last CD Drive will be automatically assigned to the flash drive (though it won't be shown but it will be done in the backend. I have tested it!) E.g., if you have 4 hard drive partitions C, D, E, F and a CD-ROM drive G, then the drive letter assigned to your USB will be H (intuitively as well as practically). When you will give the manual path to your usb i386 folder, setup will continue from the USB! :D May 03, 2009 1:14 PM

Locate folder C:\Komku\PeToUSB\ double click PeToUSB.exe

a window will appear like this...

Click Yes to continue....

Wait a few seconds...

Click OK, and you can close PeToUSB window.

then type cd komku\bootsect and press Enter

Don't close Command Prompt window, and go to step 6...

step 6: on command prompt window, type bootsect /nt52 H:

don't close Command Prompt window, and go to step 7...

step 7: now type this cd.. and press Enter

then type cd usb_prep8 and press Enter

type usb_prep8 again... and pres Enter

step 8: Your command prompt window will look like this

Press any key to continue... usb_prep8 welcome screen will appear

please wait... making of LocalSource folder is in progress...

Now, your USB Flash Drive is ready...

Continue Windows XP setup.... and Done! Windows XP Installed....
