As much as many of us may not want to hear it, its almost time for the snow to fly and Christmas is just around the corner. Not everyone can afford to make a Christmas dinner, or buy presents for their children, while maintaining the roof over their heads. Thats where the Strathmore and District Christmas Hamper Society come in to help. The Society provides a hamper filled with food, toys and other basics some of us may take for granted. Last year the Society filled 231 hampers, and this year chairperson Dave Collins is hoping to have enough items donated to fill 240 hampers. Its a reflection of the continuing downturn in the provincial and world economies that we need to assist so many families once again, said Collins in a press release. The employment situation seems to be slowly improving but its a hard fact of life that many families need two breadwinners just to keep the family budget in balance. Even then difficult choices have to be made, especially at Christmas time when it becomes a choice between winter tires or presents for the kids. Each hamper costs approximately $400 plus sufficient toys for any children in the family, which means the Society needs a budget of $110,000 in order to do the job. Bins to collect non perishable food donations are being set up around town at popular shopping destinations such as Sobeys, Shoppers Drug Mart, Co-op and many more. Collins said they are looking for all of the basics; pasta, cereal, soup and other dry goods. Cash is always a good thing to donate because then we can go out and buy all the things we are still short, said Collins. As we approach sorting day and packing day then we can have a better idea of what items were short and if weve got some money then obviously we can go out and buy them. Its always nice to have cash in the bank so that we can just fill all the necessary gaps. This is the 26th year that the Society has helped families in need in Strathmore and Wheatland County. Collins said residents have always stepped up to the plate and have been generous in giving, and he hopes they will continue to do so. The volunteers are another big part of what keeps everything going. Anyone interested in helping can contact the Wheatland Family and Community Support Services office at 403-934-5335. The Society is especially looking for volunteers able to assist with the lifting and carrying of boxes. Packing day is Dec. 17, and the distribution days are Dec.19 and 20.

This Halloween, thirty students from Strathmore High set out in their costumes to collect non-perishable items for the local food bank. The student leadership committee from the school has been organizing this event for a number of years. Every year has been a success, and this year was no different. A lot of work went in to planning out routes, making posters, and recruiting volunteers. We started planning for the food drive back in September, said SLCs co-president, Parker Gavy, who has participated in the food drive for the past three years. Students spread out over various areas of Strathmore trickor-treating for non-perishable food

items rather than candy. The community response was terrific. Every house that we went to donated at least something, said Sonora Bardgett, an SLC member. It felt great to collect all that food, and to know that it will go to people in our community who need it. Quite a few people gave us candy as well, which was definitely a bonus! This was Bardgetts first year participating in the food drive, and she felt like it was a great way to still dress up and be involved with Halloween as a teenager. At the end of the night, the students compiled all the collected items and filled the back of a Suburban. It was unbelievable to see how much food we collected, she said. Ill totally do it again next year.

The Price is right for one Strathmore resident

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter

Getting a chance to attend the American game show The Price is Right can be exciting in itself, but hearing your named called to come on down makes it even more so. When Devon Christie, who prefers to go by her married name Hall, heard the words, Devon Christie come on down she was ecstatic. Strathmore residents Hall and her husband Brent were on a trip down south this summer, exploring the coast, and decided to attend the show. We got tickets beforehand. I had everything completely planned anddecided we were going to go down, said Devon Hall. It was pretty fun, its just a really long process because you are there for literally four hours before they start taping. They bring you from holding room, to holding room, to holding room, but they psych everybody up a lot so when you get on there youre really excited. Hall said the producers of the show do interviews with everyone in small groups and thats how they pick the contestants. She said no one knows they have been picked until their name is called. Hence you jumping up and down looking like an idiot. Its all real, said Hall. She and her husband were sitting in the front row, and she said Drew Carey came and spoke to them. She said Carey was really nice and spent time talking to everybody in the crowd between tapings. They called me up in the second half of the show and then to get up on the stage I bid on two watches, said Hall. I bid $1,500 for the two watches and everybody booed because they thought

that I had bid too high but they ended up being $1,995 or whatnot. Because she won the bid she was brought up onto the stage and asked how would she like to win camping equipment, or a new car, which was a Nissan Juke. I ended up winning the camping equipment, and then I got to spin the big wheel. There was a guy ahead of me who spun, and I think he spun a 75. I spun a 65 so I had to spin again and I ended up going over, so I didnt make it to the final showcase, said Hall. They process everybody after the shows done and they gave me a piece of paper to forfeit your prizes. I was like, why would on earth would you forfeit your prizes, and the woman said to me, well actually a lot of people do because they cant afford to pay all the taxes on them. In order for Hall to claim her prizes she needs to pay 37 per cent of the cost, which she said works out to $918. Hall was happy to have a chance to go on the show and said she would definitely take part in another game show if she had the chance.

Devon Hall and her husband Brent had a chance to be a part of the Price is Right during their trip to the U.S.

Lest We Forget
Remembrance Day commemorates Canadians who died in service to Canada from the South African War to current missions. It is held every November 11. The first Remembrance Day was conducted in 1919 throughout the Commonwealth. Originally called Armistice Day, it commemorated the end of the First World War on Monday, November 11, 1918, at 11 a.m.: the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. From 1923 to 1931, Armistice Day was held on the Monday of the week in which November 11 fell. Thanksgiving was also celebrated on this day. In 1931, MP Allan Neill introduced a bill to hold Armistice Day on a fixed day - November 11. During the bills introduction, it was decided the word Remembrance would be used instead of Armistice. The bill passed and Remembrance Day was first conducted on November 11, 1931. Thanksgiving Day was moved to October 12 that year. The poppy is the symbol of Remembrance Day. Replica poppies are sold by the Royal Canadian Legion to raise money for Veterans.

Books of Remembrance
Seven Books of Remembrance are kept in the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill to honor those Canadians who died serving Canada in war. There is one for each of the wars: the South African War, World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. There is a separate Book of Remembrance for the Merchant Navy, and another one for Newfoundlanders, since Newfoundland did not join Confederation until 1949. The Seventh Book of Remembrance was dedicated in 2005 to honor Canadian Forces men and women who gave their lives for Canada since October 1947. It is ongoing and will honor Canadian Forces members who paid the ultimate sacrifice for generations to come. The Books of Remembrance provide a beautiful and touching testament to the Canadians who died in military service.

Preheat an oven to 350. Grease 24 muffin cups, or line with paper muffin liners. Whisk together the flour, pudding mix, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ground ginger, allspice, cloves, and crystallized ginger in a bowl, set aside. Beat the butter, white sugar, and brown sugar with an electric mixer in a large bowl until light and fluffy. The mixture should be noticeably lighter in color. Add eggs one at a time, allowing each egg to blend into the butter mixture before adding the next. Beat in the vanilla and pumpkin puree with the last egg. Stir in the flour mixture, mixing until just incorporated. Pour the batter into the prepared muffin cups. Bake in the preheated oven until golden and the tops spring back when lightly pressed, about 20 minutes. Cool in the pans for 10 minutes before removing to cool completely on a wire rack.

Letters to the editor

Mayor responds to previous letter

To the Editor In response to the article in the Times on October 14, with reference to my letter regarding the wastewater treatment plant, and with the greatest of respect to the writer, I have the following to say: The writer alluded to thorough and proper business requirements gathering and analysis, and ensuring that the proper solution can grow to meet the ongoing demands as the demands increase rather than buying an oversized solution that is not required currently and may never be. It is critically important to recognize that municipal operations differ from private sector operations simply by virtue of the regulatory requirements, and the strict legislative constraints we are bound by. Municipal Governments in Alberta are strictly bound by the Municipal Government Act, and a multitude of Provincial and Federal Statutes, Regulations, and Acts. We must respect mandated processes and procedures in delivering public services, and at the same time, provide services where we are mandated to provide these services in a context where citizens have rights and entitlements, with continuous improvements being the most critical. The Town of Strathmore strives to break even; however, although the financial benefits and costs are of paramount importance, it is vital to recognize that benefits and costs are not always measured in dollars. In this case, council must determine if the citizens will benefit, regardless of the financial implications, i.e. will the citizens welfare, comfort, safety, etc. be enhanced? Is there a detrimental risk to the citizen, or to the future of the community? Since 1998, Strathmore has experienced relatively high and consistent growth, apart from the past few years. This higher than expected growth rate placed pressure on the servicing infrastructure of the Town. Strathmore has been, and is, focused on the significance of long-term planning of land, and related servicing to ensure the long-term viability and stability of our community. Long-term plans include approximately a 10-year supply of serviceable residential land, complemented by a 10-year supply of lands with approved planning policy, and additional land holdings to secure accommodation of additional long term growth and infrastructure coordination into and beyond the next 30 years. To ensure we were planning for long-term sustainable growth, we annexed in 18 quarter sections of land. Part of the annexation process involved extensive research, including a Growth Study, Master Servicing Study, and a Fiscal Impact Study, just to name a few. The results of these studies provided the Town with the guidance and direction on future infrastructure needs for our community. The extensive research and analysis supports the oversizing of the wastewater treatment plant, as well as other critical infrastructure. The research took into consideration both long-term and immediate benefits, and also, if the benefits exceeded the costs, (not necessarily the financial benefits and costs). The construction of the wastewater treatment plant upgrade became a necessity for two reasons improved treatment of wastewater to meet Alberta Environment requirements, and additional capacity. As part of the Towns Approval to Operate a Wastewater System, Alberta Environment implemented a clause requiring the Town to upgrade the Wastewater Treatment Plant to improve the quality of treated wastewater going into the Bow River. In addition, with the growth the Town had experienced over the previous years, the capacity of the existing treatment plant was nearing its limit. With the construction of this new plant, it was identified that once the new plant was constructed, the old plant could be taken offline and modified to act as additional capacity in the system, for minimal construction cost. While this re-deployment of the old plant has some operational costs associated with it, re-using an existing asset into the future for minimal construction cost makes good financial sense. To clarify the statement with regard to the 4.8 million in operating costs, this figure comprises the entire operating budget amount for sewer, which consists of the Epcor contract, debt repayment, amortization, gross recoveries and administrative costs. The actual operating cost component makes up about 31 per cent of the entire sewer-operating budget. The unknown factors would include costs for bio-solid disposal and fluctuating costs for electricity, gas, etc. As a Council, we are responsible for considering the well being of the entire community, and for ensuring the sustainability and future of our community. As stewards of the environment, which includes the built environment, we must take very special care to ensure that the world we turn over to our children is healthy, productive and sustainable. Anyone wanting further information may set up a meeting with me by contacting Linda Nelson at 403 934-3133, or e-mail at lindan@strathmore.ca. Steve Grajczyk, Strathmore Mayor

Jammed in Internet traffic while surfing

To the Editor Because a promotion took me to work at another CSC prison, a few years ago we embarked on the journey of living in rural Alberta. We have had to adjust to living with limited access to health care, driving more than an hour or two to reach specialists for our children, school days that go from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a couple hours spent on the bus, more driving to get to recreational/social activities, etc. While I dont enjoy these distances, I can appreciate the contributing geography. We have also endured limited communication services which, due to satellite technology, is not necessarily limited by geography. I was surprised today to learn that a practice of the CRTC contributes to this country cousin treatment of us rural dwellers who keep our country fed and functioning. Because the CRTC auctions off bandwidth spectrum in large geographic blocks that cover both urban and rural areas, this creates competition between companies serving these areas. Those that serve the populous urban areas with more customers are able to outbid those that serve the rural areas. As a result, services to rural areas are limited and more expensive. Personally, I have checked the Internet and called various ISPs that are listed as providing Internet service to the communities that surround me. The ONLY service I can get is Xplornet. While faster than dial-up, the listed speed of 0.5 Mbps for $62.99 frequently slows down due to traffic volumes to speeds of less than 40 kbps when downloading files like security updates. Would this not improve with greater availability of bandwidth? (Fortunately it looks like better speeds and prices are coming this spring by Xplornet with the launch of a new satellite.) In this open letter to the Minister of Industry (see www.xplornet.ca/openletter.aspx), 14 rural ISPs are recommending a simple solution: Set up the geographic areas so as to separate urban and rural bandwidth being auctioned off. This would benefit both urban and rural ISPs. So I would like to ask, will the CRTC be acting on this recommendation? Will the CRTC be separating urban and rural geographic areas for their upcoming bandwidth auction? Will the CRTC make it possible for rural ISPs to provide service to us country cousins who currently are being outpaced on the Internet highway? I suggest you make your views known to the CRTC too. Jammed in Internet traffic, Wanda Wiebe, Wheatland County

Letters to the editor

MARDELLE BAZANT, a dedicated volunteer and Strathmore Auxiliary member, was rewarded with a life membership in the Alberta Hospitals Auxiliaries Association at the October Convention in Canmore. MARDELLE served one term as President and since has been treasurer of both the Auxiliary and the Hospital Foundation. Since the hospital opened in 1985 she has accumulated over 13,000 volunteer hours.

Seniors look to town for answers

To the Editor Why is the Town of Strathmore conspiring against seniors who wished to pursue an active, healthy lifestyle? Case in point: The pool It took us 10 years of fundraising to get the complete aquatic complex. Two years for the big (lap) pool; then another eight for the rest. So why, since this spring, has the water in the big pool gotten cooler, till now it is quite COLD. Cold water is particularly aggravating to arthritis sufferers, to say nothing of it causing painful cramps. The staff tells us, that Calgarys pools are 27 degrees. However, when I have personally gone to some of them, the actual temperature is, Bob Behan 28.8 degrees (October 14), and Renfrew 29 degrees (October 22). Why is our pool considerably colder than ACTUAL pool temperatures in Calgary? Do we seniors now need to get a handi-bus to go into Calgary for swimming and aquasize? But now the rates for a non-profit social group to use the handi-bus have gone sky high. We know that it is primarily the seniors who have contributed their time, talent and money over the years so Strathmore could have a pool and other recreational facilities, and make the handi-bus possible. Now it seems the town has the attitude We got what we want from you; now push off!! Only in Strathmore! Anna Reinwald, Strathmore, AB

everyone ate, they cleared the tables and helped wash dishes. When the hall was cleared everyone was tired but was happy that they got to help their community. The Standard 4-H Club joined Crowfoot Multi 4-H Club at the Cluny Corn maze on Oct. 22. After hotdogs and hot chocolate, we entered the dark and scary corn maze. We were sent out with flashlights and glow sticks. When we were walking along in the corn maze minding our own business we were frightened by men with masks hidden in the corn. Special thanks to Don and Dianne Brown for making the night so much fun!

Premier Redfords State of Alberta Address

Arno DoerKSen, MLA Strathmore-Brooks Constituency

Albertans have long enjoyed a high standard of living - one of the highest in the world. Albertans expectations for their future are equally high, and rightly so. Our new Premier, Alison Redford, believes it is important to keep Albertans informed about their governments plans for Albertas future in the face of ongoing global economic difficulties. We must define where we are, where we are going and where we want to be in a fast-changing, unpredictable world. As highlighted by the Premier in her Oct. 24 State of the Province Address, this is not just about the need to build prosperity. It is about anticipating our provinces needs amid great uncertainty in the world around us. Our plans for stable, multi-year budgets for essential public services will bring unprecedented discipline to public spending. Other governments have talked about doing it. We will make it happen. We will make the tough decisions; we will spend wisely and save intelligently, managing our finances to protect future Albertans from debt and ensuring a strong social network

to protect our most vulnerable. We will introduce the necessary reforms to keep this province growing and we will balance the budget by 2013-14. Alberta has no net debt. We have $5,700 in assets per person and the highest credit rating available. We have the lowest overall taxes in Canada. We have disciplined spending priorities and no long-term debt. Ultimately, our goal is to ensure economic success and a great quality of life for everyone in a province where hard work is rewarded and no one turns a blind eye to want or hardship. We will seize opportunity wherever we find it. We must search for new partners in new markets and promote Alberta on the world stage. This government, working together with Albertans, will get us there. Our future prosperity is dependent on the decisions that we make today and our success, at home and abroad, is ultimately driven by people. We will work together to strengthen Alberta and prepare it to overcome every obstacle, and together, we will ensure that a smarter, bolder Alberta unleashes its full potential to become the best place in the world to live, work and raise a family.

MP Sorenson pleased with introduction of legislation to end the long-gun registry

Kevin SorenSon M.P., Crowfoot Parliamentary Report Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson is pleased the Conservative government has introduced legislation that will scrap the failed and costly long gun registry. For years, my constituents have constantly and consistently contacted me opposed to the hardship that Bill C-68 caused in Crowfoot and many other federal ridings, particularly in remote and rural parts of Canada, he said. Fourteen years and $2 billion later, the gun registry has not helped address gun crime in urban nor rural Canada. The Harper Government has always been clear; by eliminating the wasteful and ineffective long-gun registry, we can instead focus our efforts on measures that actually tackle crime and make our streets and communities safe, said Public Safety Minister Vic Toews. Our Government will continue to uphold our commitment to effective gun control measures that help keep firearms out of the hands of criminals and off our streets. Bill C-19, An Act to amend the Criminal Code and the Firearms Act will: Repeal the requirement to register non-restricted firearms (long-guns); Provide for the destruction of all records pertaining to the registration of long-guns currently contained in the Canadian Firearms Registry and under the control of the chief firearms officers; and Maintain controls over restricted and prohibited firearms. Under the proposed reforms, firearms owners will still require a valid firearm licence to purchase or possess firearms. They will also be required to undergo police background checks, pass a firearms safety training course and comply with firearms safe storage and transportation requirements. In addition, individuals will continue to be required to register prohibited and restricted firearms, such as handguns. Sorenson concludes, Our government is committed to putting the safety of Canadians first with real action on crime that delivers enhanced protection for communities. That is why our government is investing in a number of effective measures such as putting more police on our streets, fighting organized crime, introducing mandatory minimum penalties for serious gun crime and combating gun smuggling. Bill C-19 is consistent with our efforts to ensure firearms laws target real criminals and protect the safety of the public. Finally, we will ensure that the data on the existing registry is destroyed to prevent a future government from trying to resurrect another one.

Facility Grand OpeninG sales event beGins nOvember 21st!

After completing their multi-million dollar renovation, Strathmores Bryon Smith Ford wants to say thanks. The long-standing Ford dealership will host a facility grand opening celebration Nov. 24; a ribbon-cutting event with dignitaries, appetizers, cake - and of course, great deals on new and used vehicles. While the renovation may have taken a little longer than anticipated, the staff is excited to show the state-of-the-art dealership to its value customers. Its all about giving our customers the exceptional service they deserve, said owner Byron Smith. We want to be the most trusted and respected dealership in Alberta for our clients. We (want) our customers to be wowed beyond their expectations when they come in. According to Smith, customers can expect an open-concept building that is clutter-free, user-friendly and comfortable. It features a customer lounge and high-end washrooms between the parts and service area and the showroom. It also features a duel drive-thru service bay. Now the focus is on selling vehicles with Canadas fastest growing automaker. There is a huge vote of confidence when you are working with a parent company that is solid as Ford Motor Company is, said Smith. Its been around now for over 100 years, but for the last two years in a row, we have been the number one manufacturer in Canada. I think (everyone) should experience (driving) a Ford to see what we have to offer. Our quality is second to none. Our ecoboost engines with the fuel economy they offer is second to none. Our ride and styling is also second to none. We have a good-looking product, with good quality and great pricing. Best of all, the dealership provides all these features, right here in Strathmore. According to Smith, he wouldnt have it any other way. Im very happy and proud to be in the Town of Strathmore, said Smith. I think the growth and the energy that surrounds us here is outstanding - it makes us excited to come to work every day. We have ben a dealer for 21 years and were here for the long-haul.

Taking hair to a new level

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter

Having free rein to test your creative limits is something every artist aspires towards. For Courtney-Tyler Albig hair is her art. On Oct. 24 she took part in the Lethbridge Purely Inspired Academy of Beauty Fantasy hair and Makeover competition. Its a lot of fun, and it gives you so much experience because thats another part of the industry that a lot of stylists dont know about, said Albig who attends Purely Inspired Academy. Albig chose to go with a pirate theme and took first place with her pirate ship hairpiece, sword and other accessories. Actually when they were talking to us about it, it was kind of the same time that Pirates of Caribbean was coming out, so I just thought, hmm that would be a good idea, and no ones really done that before, said Albig. Any little piece that I could add hair

into, I did, so many hours spent working on it. I placed first, it was unbelievable. I had no idea I was going to win. Albig, who graduated from Strathmore High School, SHS, in 2010, has always had a love for hair. She remembers playing with her Barbie dolls and colouring their hair with highlighters and trying new styles on them. While attending SHS she took the cosmetology class for three years and when it came near graduation she decided to keep going. I want to do as much as can. I think I just like making people happy with hair, said Albig. Its crazy what a difference that doing someones hair and or makeup can make them feel about themselves. So I just like making people feel better. Albig will have graduated before the next bi-annual Fantasy hair and Makeover competition, but said she may enter the Allied Beauty Association competitions held in Calgary and Edmonton.

Help wanted to keep feeding those in need

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter

Having a helping hand with dinner can be a blessing when you arent able to stand over the stove long enough to cook, or may need assistance preparing a meal. The Strathmore Meals on Wheels program is there to help seniors and persons with disabilities by providing them with dinner once a day, five days a week for $6. Because our population is increasing we need to change our program. Its for a small town, so we need to come up to date, said Susan Gates, a board member with Meals on Wheels and with Wheatland Family and Community Support Services, FCSS. We need to bump up our meals. Weve only been doing 10 meals per day and that is about as much

as a volunteer can handle. Thats why we need the extra drivers, is we need to bump up those meals to be able to get everybody onto the program that asks. Gates said the staff at the hospital, who are making the meals, are willing to make more. A prospective client can be referred by their doctor, homecare provider, or can be self referred. FCSS will collect the client name, phone number, their diet, and their emergency contact information. FCSS does all of the billing in the office. FCSS is not Meals on Wheels but does offer the office support free of charge and do all the billing for them, processing clients and arrange the meals. Food options are a diabetic meal, regular meal or a low sodium meal. It is preferred that people are on a schedule. For example, the client can opt to have a meal delivered on Monday, Wednesday and

Friday or whatever works for them, but clients cant call that day and ask for a meal that evening. Delivery takes approximately one hour. Gates said the hope is to get more volunteers signed up to deliver the meals, and also to find committee members to sit on the board of directors. From the drivers we need them to commit to minimum one week a year. Thats the only commitment, we need that one week and thats how we deliver is one week at a time, Monday to Friday and your week is done, said Gates. Drivers have to be 18, have their own vehicle and valid drivers license and insurance, and are required to have a criminal record check done. The applicants must also be able to work with seniors and have good communication skills. For more information contact Susan Gates at either 403-934-5335 or at sgates@wfcss.org.

This year a total of nine Strathmore High School students will be taking part in an encounters with Canada, Canadas largest youth forum trip to Ottawa. Jenna Gigantelli, left, morgan Janzen, Robert Jacobs, Keean Bexte and Tynan Nelson have all already gone on their excursion.

Local students gain lifelong experience

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter

Travelling across the country to meet people who have the same interests as you can promote lifelong friendships and enhance learning experiences. This is something five Strathmore High School, SHS, students were most excited about when speaking about their separate experiences with Encounters with Canada. This year SHS will send a total of nine students on the weeklong trip to one of Canadas largest youth forums in Ottawa. They were nominated because they have all achieved a mark, last year were talking about of course, of 80 per cent or greater in Social Studies 10. So they were nominated by their teacher and then a teacher from another subject also had to agree to the nomination, said Rob Pirie, a SHS social studies teacher. I think what it does, to me it exposes them to a broader range of opportunities throughout the country. I think what they really are saying when they say they made friends, they mean likeminded people who are enthusiastic about education, about learning about Canada and the government. Each week is themed, so Jenna (Gigantelli) and I went to medicine and health, so then there was workshops based on medicine and health and every week does a cultural activity, said Morgan Janzen. Each of the students can pick a different week to attend, learning about

medicine and health, arts and culture, law, science and technology and a variety of other topics. I think that seeing as how we all picked a week that we had an interest in the topic, thats going to help us later on because were going to remember what we learned when we went there, said Gigantelli. That will help us later on because if we get into that field well always remember back to the things that they taught us and the people that we met. It was so cool to find out different things of how each province is different. Like you think Canada is just all the same but each province is unique, said Janzen. Keean Bexte and Robert Jacobs attended during the science and technology week. I want to be a microbiologist when I grow up. It was interesting, I like science, said Bexte, laughing. Jacobs said he was interested in learning more about the fields to help him potentially pick a future career. It gives you an interest in stuff. I dont think it really teaches you really about different subjects and separate classes but it gets you interested in stuff you like, said Bexte. Tynan Nelson attended the sports and fitness week, which he said he went to just for fun. All five agreed that making friends was one of the things that stand out the most to them. Bexte said it was tough at the end, though, having to say goodbye. Each had a fond memory to come back with, and a few of them plan to return to our nations capital in the future.

address the decisions arising from last summers National Convention in Saskatoon and their consequences. The convention passed four separate and distinct motions all involving sexuality and the church. The first motion concerned the Social Statement on Human Sexuality, the most contentious aspect of it being acceptance of homo-erotic behavior as permissible in certain circumstances. The second motion was a Unity Statement which, anticipating a negative reaction from some quarters to the Social Statement, asserted that moral issues should not be church-dividing. The last two motions built on the previous ones, the first allowing for pastors of the ELCIC to perform same-gender marriages if they so chose to, and to allow for the ordination of partnered gay or lesbian pastors (previously the ELCIC allowed individuals who were homosexual in their self-understanding could be ordained and serve as pastors so long as they were chaste). All of the motions passed by a margin of between 60 and 64 per cent. Mayan said the decisions at convention were due to political will and not made based on theology or pastoral care. I am a theologian and the motions were not scripturally or theologically sound. Even so he said it was inevitable that this was going to happen. If not in 2011, then in 2013 or 2015 - the political will to make this happen was that great. These issues are not new to the ELCIC. Similar motions were defeated at the 2005 and 2007 national conventions, and while they arose at the 2009 meeting, they were dropped as the task force developing the Social Statement was in the middle of its work. There are around 30 ELCIC congregations in Alberta alone who are in the process of leaving the denomination or exploring other avenues for their members. This is ten times more than any other Synod in Canada, said Mayan. Mayan is the only Bishop in the ELCIC (of a total of six) not supportive of these decisions. It is a hard ground to stand on but I will not relent. Even though he is against these decisions, Mayan maintains he is committed to remaining in the ELCIC, to uphold the traditional teaching on these matters. He urged congregations who opposed these decisions to remain in the ELCIC as well. One option he suggested was that congregations could pass a declaration stating that same-gender marriages would not take place in their church, nor would they be open to calling a partnered gay or lesbian pastor. Mayan pointed out that neither the Social Statement nor the attending motions force a pastor or congregation to do anything with which they dont agree. The ELCIC is a voluntary confederation of congregations, and what the National Church did was give local congregations the option to decide for themselves if they wanted to act on these decisions or not, he said. Judging from the questions Mayan fielded, this is not an easy issue for congregations, parishioners or pastors and is causing considerable stress and strain as they grapple with these questions. Mayan noted that the concerns raised were by no means unique. He pointed out that given the structure of the ELCIC he does not have the authority to tell congregations what to do. The best he could offer is advice, information and prayer.

TIPS
Heres another reminder about the weather out there. Now that we are getting into our cold weather season it would be a good time to check your car kits. You dont want to be stuck on the side of the road thinking, if only I had stocked my car... Lets start with the basics. -Not that you ever think you will actually need to store food and water in your car, but you just never know. There have been a few stranded people around the Alberta/BC area in the last 2 years who go off searching H HoME for something to eat and arent found. H FArM Food could be something as easy as energy bars, just to keep you going. H AuTo -Its always good to have a blanket, and maybe a sweater and H GrouP extra socks and a spare pair of shoes, ProGrAMS or boots. Mittens are also good. (in case you have to try and shovel H CoMMErCIAl yourself out of somewhere). -A first aid kit, with a seatbelt H rECrEATIon cutter -A candle in a deep can and a pack of matches (if your lighter gets H lIFE cold, it wont light) believe it or not a candle may provide warmth if you H TrAVEl cant start your car. Just dont light it if there is anything leaking! Take ACTION -Warning light or road flares, A flashlight and a whistle (to attract Against High attention if need be) -Sand, salt Premiums or non clumping kitty litter (if you sprinkle some under your tires, it provides traction) -fire extinguisher And heres a few extra things to throw in your trunk just because they are handy to have with you! -scraper and a snowbrush -map book of the area -Jumper cables and a tow rope -cell phone charger -antifreeze and windshield washer fluid Wishing you safe and happy journeys!

The number of visitors is expected to drastically increase as Southern Albertas Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park (BCHP)has been confirmed as one of the 67 qualified sites to be added to the second wave of the Canadian Tourism Commissions (CTC) new marketing program in the 2011 Signature Experiences Collection (SEC). With the current number of travel experiences totalling 115, the SEC marketing program is prioritizing to advertise the high quality tourism experiences internationally to grab the attention of consumers in 11 countries around the world. The CTC sales teams are trying to be consistent with promoting the image of Canada through its tourism brand, Canada. Keep Exploring. China, a noteworthy country for its steady increase in the travel market, has recently deemed Canada to be a favourable destination, said Beverly Wright, VP, Programs and Business at BCHP, which makes her excited about the potential outcome. According to the CTCs website, the Chinese Travel Market is gaining momentum. In 2009, 26 million Chinese travellers visited Canada, and the number is expected to reach 60 million by 2020. Even if we get a fraction of those visitors, its going to be a mass amount of people and of course theyll all be staying in Strathmore hotels, said Wright. When the BCHP first opened in July 2007, the new commodity was thriving and the season of 2009 was their most productive year. The numbers in the following years have sort of evened out, as Wright puts it.

We want to be one of the signature attractions in this area and it would be nice to draw in the amount of numbers that Tyrrell Museum does. We want to be identified in the same branch - you know if you go in the area, you can go to Tyrrell the dinosaur park and you can go to Blackfoot Crossing, said Wright. The BCHP has reached out to other marketing opportunities as well, including Travel Alberta and Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) partners and is a part of the Canadian Badlands marketing region. Wright said a lot of help has been given in regards to funding opportunities, marketing strategies and area development plans. Were totally in our infant stages. We are still developing programs and we are trying to start to use our amenities more. Were trying to have more special events and get our neighbours from Strathmore out as well, said Wright. The BCHP plans to bring in the very

popular Andrea Menard, a Mtis singer/songwriter and actor, recent Gemini nominee for Best Performance by an Actress for her television roles in Velvet Devil and Moccasin Flats. She is currently playing in Blackstone, which broadcasts on APTN and Showcase. Menard is to come and perform a concert for the kids as well as do an evening show on Dec. 2. Its just that we are looking to improve our programs and attractions all the time and well keep our neighbours and Strathmore informed so they can come out and have fun with us, said Wright. The BCHP is reaching all aspects of the market to increase tourist productivity while the CTC is also expecting their third wave of applications coming in this November to further expand the SEC. The business of tourism is huge and is set to steadily increase, benefitting many aspects of the Canadian economy by creating jobs and contributing to Canadas overall Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The Transitions kids at Strathmore High School have incorporated the use of iPods and iPads into their daily routine. The largely motivating tool allows the class of nine to have access to resources that would have been too expensive and unrealistic in the past. The students first began using Mac products the previous year and the assistive technology has shown to be very helpful and is being used in other areas of the school district as well. They use it for all sorts of things, so far this year theyve use done Keynote presentations, they use Pages which is like Word, their schedules are put on there and I have one student who doesnt speak and there is a program on his iPad that is a voice for him, said Anne Douglas, SHS Transitions teacher. A lot of the kids have difficulty speaking and the technology allows them to communicate within the community and connect to the student body. The speech assistive technology can easily be made available to all of the Transitions kids by the simply downloading an app, whereas in previous years, the high price would have made accessing the same quality of technology impossible. What theyre able to do is amazing, definitely here we are lucky, we are very well supported and we have a good administration and have a really good staff in this room, said Douglas. The kids are also using a new program called WordQ+SpeakQ which allows the students to use their speech to help them write as well as word prediction and spoken feedback. I add, I change, I improve, look at

whats working, whats not working. We have programs that are geared towards them specifically and so throughout our day, they spend time working on academic skills and other things like job related skills like bottle recycling. The reason we do it (is) a lot of reasons, its job skills, these guys need to learn how to work together, how to complete different tasks (and) how to follow steps, said Douglas. The money collected from the bottle recycling helps subsidize many of the students programs including field trips and the lunch program, where the kids learn how to cook their own meals. Our main goal of this program is independence, but also, its having them a part of the community. They all go into regular classes throughout the day and some of them are supported and quite a few of them go independently, said Douglas. The name of the program, Transitions, comes from the programs goal to transition the kids from school to adulthood by teaching them the life skills that they will need. We definitely compare to other classes in the school. I think a lot of people see them in the hallways and dont recognize them for how amazing they are and how they impact everyone around them, they are such an amazing part of our community, said Douglas. The students had a chance to pass out candy in the halls for Halloween and look forward to more fun activities, including their weekly Monday swims. Transitions student Parker Petruska puts his iPad to use to keep an eye out for his favourite team, the Calgary Flames, through his sports app, and says hes happy to be at SHS. Its a really good class.

Antique Railway Cars Saved

aSpen CroSSing

It seemed Christmas came early to Aspen Crossing this year, with Santa using five lo-boy trailers to deliver a Snow Plow, 3 Boxcars and a Caboose. However, in reality it was Aspen Crossing who played Santa to these relics of yesterdays railroad by saving them from the salvage yard and providing a new home. These cars had been in a long line at Skiff, Alberta awaiting demolition. The line grew shorter each day as the old cars made that final trip to the scrap yard. Finally, only five remained. Aspen Crossing had adopted these in order to offer a piece of history to the public for many years to come. Jason Thornhill, owner of Aspen Crossing, says these cars will be on display to educate future generations on railway operations of yesteryear. These old boxcars were the utility haulers of the railway carrying everything from soup to nuts. Imagine, the back breaking job of loading and unloading these cars with lumber, sacks of feed, dry goods, groceries, etc. On the inside are markings indicating how high grain could be piled. Special cardboard had to be used at the doors, to seal the grain before loading through a hatch at the top. A hole was punched in this cardboard, and an auger inserted for unloading. Talk about labour intensive! The snowplow would be pushed along the track by a locomotive. The plow operator sat in a cupola overlooking the rails ahead. He had controls for folding snowplow wings at RR crossings. Also, he was able to adjust the blade between the tracks to the desired height. With the snow plow attached, a train engineer was literally running blind and depend-

ed on communication from the snow plow operator, thru whistle signals or radio, to speed up, slow down, stop, etc. There are many awesome examples of railway snowplowing to view on YouTube. The caboose had many uses, mainly serving as an office for the conductor. He was responsible for the train (the boss of the operation). His duty was to oversee the crew. An engineer couldnt move the train until he received orders from the conductor. The small windowed extension on top the caboose is called the cupola. Here the conductor was able to sit and oversee the whole train. Often a caboose was placed on a siding to become a temporary jobsite office. Many had cooking and sleeping facilities. Aspen Crossing now has four cabooses on location. You are able tour one to see what went on inside. They also have a Cabin Caboose available for overnight stays These five lucky cars join an impressive collection, including the crown jewel of Aspen Crossing, an1887 pullman dining car, that once was former Prime Minister John Diefenbakers private rail car. He was the last prime minister to campaign from the railway. If you close your eyes, you can almost see our 13th Prime Minister engaging a huge crowd from his position standing on the rear platform, jowls waving, as he closes an era in Canadian history. At Aspen Crossing there is no charge to the public to view these pieces of antiquity from bygone days. Located on Highway 24 just outside Mossleigh, Alberta (about 45 minutes SE of Calgary)Aspen Crossing is easily recognizable by the replica 1905 CPR Station, yellow CPR caboose and 1887 dining car.

There will be an open house for anyone who may be interested in learning more about Relay for Life on Nov. 9 at the Travelodge. The purpose of the open house is to provide a place to have questions answered, but also, people may sign up as committee members, volunteers, survivors, teams or participants. The goal is to allow people to sign up and ask questions as well as give feedback to last years event so we can improve. An open-house style was chosen because it is less formal and people can come and go as their schedule allows, said Kristel Lang, one of the committee chairs. We chose now because this is the time when the initial stages of Relay for Life begins. We want to spread the word that starting early allows for more fundraising to occur, as well as lets people do things at a more relaxed pace than rushing at the very end.

Lang said the goal this year for Relay for Life is to sign up 20 teams and raise $100,000. The Relay for Life event takes place in Strathmore in June and participants walk all night as a show of strength and their determination to help find a cure for cancer. Over 500 events happen each year across the country, joining cancer survivors and affected family members for a celebration of life, and to remember those who have lost their battle. We see the survivors as a big part of Relay for Life, they are why we Relay, said Lang. Survivors show that our efforts of raising money for research and resources helps people to survive after they begin their journey of hearing the words, you have cancer. They are crucial and we are hopeful to have 75 survivors this year and we would also like to honor their caregivers. The open house will run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Travelodge, and anyone interested in learning more about the Relay for Life is encouraged to attend.

Candles for a cause

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter

One Strathmore woman has asked friends and customers to help out a charity of her choice instead of buying her birthday presents. Melissa David, who owns Quality Dog Grooming, has asked people to purchase Gold Canyon candles, and a portion of each sale will be donated to Little Mutts Rescue. She purchases my candles all the time and loves them, so she asked me if we do fundraisers and I said yes. She told me she wanted to do it for Little Mutts Dog Rescue, said Kristel Lang, who sells the candles. The candles are priced accordingly and include tax, shipping and the actual cost of the candles. She said Gold Canyon donates 38 per cent to 40 per cent of the candle price, depending on the size of the candle. The goal for the two women is to sell 100 candles, which Lang said they figure will raise just under $800 for Little Mutts. I have adopted from Little Mutts and they are an amazing organization. I am so blessed and have everything I could ever ask for, and because family, friends and clients are so wonderful and purchase me gifts, I thought I would put this option out there, said David. I love Gold Canyon products and

use them in my salon for cleaning as they are both pet friendly and environmentally friendly so it seemed like a perfect partnership. The candles are already on sale and the final day to purchase them is Nov. 19 during Davids customer appreciation event in the Chuck Mercer room from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. We will have door prizes, free samples from Cheddar Dogs, coffee & cake and something very new and exciting this year, pet photos with Santa, said David. Cody Gregory Photography will be on hand to do the professional photos. He is charging $10 and that includes the sitting fee and a print of your photo. Anyone interested in purchasing the candles before Nov. 19 can contact Lang at 403-901-1309. Ill return any call that I get and be more than willing to bring them the scents or arrange for them to get a hold of the scents, said Lang. The scents are on scratch and sniff pages. Lang said some friends have been taking them around and letting people get a sniff of what they may want to purchase. She will accept cash, cheque or credit. To book pet photos with Santa, pet owners can call 403-923-8983. Details are also available www.qualitydoggrooming.com.

Senior Hawks host tournament

The Holy Cross Collegiate senior girls and boys volleyball teams had a home tournament Oct. 28 and 29. The girls finished in second place, and the boys made it as far as the quarterfinals. The Wheatland Kings swept all three games this past weekend, including a 6-1 home win over Coaldale on Oct. 29. Doug Taylor Photo

Kings move up in standings

Mario PruSina Times Editor The Wheatland Kings have won three games in a row before, but according to head coach Doug Murphy, not in this fashion. The local junior-B team swept their three-game weekend starting with an 8-3 road win in Airdrie on Friday, a 6-1 whipping of Coaldale on Oct. 29 and posting a 5-4 overtime win in Banff on Sunday afternoon. We havent been able to stick back-to-backs together (this season), now we do three (in three days) against some pretty good teams, beamed Murphy. Like Ive been saying, the talent is there, it just had to come together as a team. There were a few things this weekend we did that made things gel. Were playing some awesome hockey. There were a couple of letdowns, but not ones that cost us too badly. After allowing the first goal in Fridays game in Airdrie, the Kings responded with five unanswered goals en route to an 8-3 win over the Thunder. Sam Lonnberg and Austin Fisher each recorded three points in the win, while Jordan Griffiths, Brennan Grasdahl, Parker Georgsen, Mike Samoil, Lucas Ford and Brandon Neufeld each recorded two points in the win. According to Murphy, it was very satisfying to secure the two points in Airdrie, a place where many teams fail to win. The General Manager from Airdrie was saying that its the worst theyve ever been beaten at home in their franchise history, chuckled Murphy. So thats a good thing. The Kings followed up their strong performance with an impressive win on home ice the next night. Aaron Elaschuk had a goal and two assists to lead the way, while Grasdalh recorded a pair of goals in the 6-1 win over the Copperhead. Tyler Brandon had a goal and an assist, while Ford and Hayden Warrack each lit the lamp for the Kings. We had a really good game, we just totally dominated the entire game, said the coach. We had the forecheck going really well, there were a lot of shifts where they couldnt get the puck out of their end. The Kings wrapped up the weekend with a sub-par game versus the Banff Bears on Sunday afternoon. Despite not playing their best game, the Kings pulled out a 5-4 win. Tyler Brandon and Racey Big Snake lead the attack with a goal and an assist, while Fisher and the Elaschuk brothers Aaron and Evan each scored once. We didnt come quite as prepared to play as we had the last two games the guys werent mentally ready, said Murphy. Their goaltender played extremely well. Theyre not quite the doormat that theyve have been. The Kings are now preparing for a pair of home games this weekend. They will host the Banff Bears on Nov. 4 (8 p.m.) and the Stettler Lightning the following night at 8 p.m.

Peewees advance to league Championship

JaMeS GianCoLa Times Jr. Reporter The peewee Spartans football team beat the Red Deer Steelers 26-20 to advance to the championship game next Saturday against the Innisfail Cyclones. As expected, the game against Red Deer was a very competitive match-up as the two teams were ranked second and third (Spartans ranked second, Steelers ranked third) in the league. The Spartans and Steelers had a similar record as well, with the only loss for both teams being against Innisfail. The Spartans had to come from behind at one point being down 14-0, but the Strathmore defense stepped up and played like the champions they are, keeping the very fast Steeler offence from scoring any points in the second half. Clutch offensive play led the Spartans in the comeback, scoring two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. The peewees will spend this week working to prepare for their next opponent, the Innisfail Cyclones, competing for the Tier 3 league championship. They are a more seasoned team, they are not scared or intimidated anymore, said head coach Doug Klauck. This will be another close game, as the Spartans have improved so much over the course of the season, since facing the Cyclones in their first game, where the final score was 64-8 for Innisfail. We will have some bigger bodies come out to practice to get the kids used to hitting people bigger than them, said Klauck. Last year the peewee Spartans played in the Tier 4 provincial championship game. This past Saturday, they defeated the two-time Tier 3 provincial champions. In only the third year, it is amazing to see just how far this program has come.

Bisons break the trend

mario Prusina Times Editor

For the first time this season, the UFA Bisons won both of their weekend games. The local triple-A midget team defeated the Royals 6-4 in Calgary on Oct. 28, before eking out a 2-1 win over the United Cycle Maple Leafs on Oct. 30 at the Strathmore Family Centre. It feels good thats what we set out to do this last week in practice, we set that as our goal, said Bisons head coach Jeremy Friesen. We had some breakdowns and we didnt really play the way that we wanted to, but at the end of the day, we got the four points and thats the most important thing. Despite not playing their best hockey over the weekend, the team did enough good things to improve their record to 5-1-3 on the season. The Bisons went into Stu Peppard Arena on Friday night and defeated a South Division opponent with a solid

game. Aaron Macklin and Kevin ORourke each scored twice, while Chandler Irvin and Mitch McAllister each scored once for the Bisons. The team showed quite a balanced attack, as seven other players also posted a point in the contest. We came to play, for sure, said McAllister of the win. We had some instances where we definitely bended but didnt break. We came out, worked hard and won the battles. It was an on-off type of game. Friesen agreed with his captains assessment of the game. I thought we played really well. Its a small rink, so it took the guys some time to adjust, said the coach. (However), I thought we dictated the game. We gave up a goal or two here and there, so it was a lot closer than it needed to be. Thats kind of the story on how we get by its another lesson to help us down the (season). The Bisons returned to the Strath-

Senior Spartans finish season early

James Giancola Times Jr. Reporter

The Strathmore senior Spartans played their last game Saturday afternoon against the Cochrane Cobras. The team gave it all they had but unfortunately it wasnt enough, as they lost the game 49-0. The Cobras got off to a very fast start, stunning the Spartans. All 49 points the Cobras scored were in the first half of the game. Strathmores

defense played incredibly well in the second half shutting out the Cobras. Even the offense (that was missing two of their starters) was able to get the ball moving against one of the best defenses they have faced all year, but they couldnt put up any points. This was the last game for a few of the players on the team and you could see just how much they cared about their teammates. They played their hearts out and it definitely showed.

more Family Centre on Sunday afternoon to play in their fifth home game of the season. Despite not playing their best game, they managed to pull out a 2-1 win. Irvin notched a goal and an assist, while McAllister also scored for the Bisons, who killed all six Maple Leaf power plays. Goaltender Grayson Sharpe made 21 saves in the win. We had the right mindset, it was all between the ears this weekend, said McAllister. We came in strong, worked as a team, gelled as a team. Weve been trying to improve on our 60 minute game from the start of the year. Building on the first period, building on the second period building on every shift throughout the game. The Bisons are preparing to host a pair of North Division teams this weekend, when they tangle with the Boston Pizza Rangers on Nov. 5 (5:30 p.m.) before taking on the Lloydminster Bobcats the following day at 2 p.m. In a bit of a scheduling quirk, eight of their first 11 games are against North Division teams. According to Friesen, it doesnt matter who the opponent is - he would like to see a solid team effort for 60 minutes. Despite not playing up to their potential thus far, the coach is pleased with the season. (Picking up points) is really positive for us, said Friesen. Were taking a step in the right direction and thats promising for sure. Now the key is to make sure we dont focus too much on one area and pull back in other areas (of our game).

The UFA Bisons improved to 5-1-3 on the season after winning both games this past weekend, including a 2-1 triumph over the United Cycle maple Leafs Oct. 30 at the Strathmore Family Centre. Mario Prusina Photo

She was born on March 22, 1991 in Red Deer, Alberta, the daughter of Darin and Lorna (Holt) Malmberg and twin sister to Shayla. Kaylynn was a strong, stubborn, courageous and beautiful young cowgirl who loved life and the people around her. A daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece, cousin, and friend, all of which she was proud to be. Kaylynn had exceptional horsemanship skills coupled with determination and desire, which drove her to excel in horseback riding. She was always looking to the future and the next goal. She is survived and will be lovingly missed by her parents Darin and Lorna, sister Shayla, her boyfriend Brent Curry, her grandparents Lynn and Jane Malmberg of Strathmore, Doreen Holt of Ponoka, great grandmother Linda Arildsen and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and friends. Funeral Services for Kaylynn will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at Carseland Community Hall at 1:00 p.m. Interment to follow at Strathmore Cemetery. A viewing and visitation was held on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at Wheatland Funeral Home (202 Lakeside Blvd., Strathmore) from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. If desired, donations may be made directly to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada (620 Colborne St., Suite 301, London, Ontario, N6B 3R9). The Strathmore Spurs U12 Boys A Team suffered their first defeat of the season with a 5-4 loss against NCU Juventus on Oct. 30 at the Subway Soccer Centre in Calgary. Strathmore traded early goals (Luka N the goal scorer) before conceding another two to go in behind 3-1 at half time. The team was not performing at their best, perhaps guilty of over-confidence after two dominating early season games. A stern half time talk by coaches Simon Pritchard & Sean Cull had an early effect at the beginning of the second half, with an early goal by Trey R. However the team slipped back into their first-half habit of backing off when the opposition had possession and conceded another two goals to trail 5-2. A late last five minute fight back showed the character of the team with two goals by Trey R and several close efforts on goal. But unfortunately time ran out and the team slumped to their first loss of the season. The team should not be to downhearted and be confident that if they concentrate on their game and listen to the coaching staff their season will quickly get back on track.

Always so good Unselfish and kind Few on this earth Her equal we find Honorable and upright In all her ways Loyal and true To the end of her days. You are not forgotten Dear wife and mother. Love Harold, Linda, Daryl and families

We would like to thank everyone for their concern and helping hands the night of our tarp barn fire. The County of Wheatland, The Fire Department, Brent Shkuratoff, Dave from Breezy Wash Service, Robert Hagen and The Keers. Even though we have lost our hay, some farm implements and our holiday trailer we feel very fortunate that the wind was blowing in the perfect direction. (If it can be perfect during a fire.) We realize how lucky we were and how blessed we are to have such caring friends, neighbors and family. Thanks Again Everyone! Rod, Trina, Darby, Hannah, and Reid Regehr

MY FIRST CHRISTMAS IN HEAVEN

Bantam Storm never give up

Ashley RodmAn Strathmore Storm Bantam C

I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below With tiny lights like Heavens stars, reflecting on the snow The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away your tear For I am spending Christmas with God this year I hear the many Christmas songs that humans hold so dear But the sounds of music cant compare With the Christmas choir up here. I have no words to tell you, the joy their voices bring For it is beyond description, to hear the angels sing. I know how much you miss me, I see the pain inside your heart. But I am not so far away, we really arent apart. So be happy for me my treasured friend you know I hold you dear And be glad that I am spending Christmas with God this year. I will ring the Christmas bell for you, that hangs upon your door To let you know Im with you, in your lap or by your feet, on the floor. Ill stay for just a little while to see that youre okay But theres no need to worry, Ill come again another day. Ill bring with me a special gift from my heavenly home above Ill bring for you a memory of my undying love. So have a Merry Christmas and wipe away your tear Remember Im spending Christmas with God this year.

This past weekend the Strathmore Storm bantam C team was in Medicine Hat to play against two of the Medicine Hat teams. Saturdays game was a tough one for the boys. By the end of the first the boys were down 6-1 but they didnt give up they came back in the second and the third to make it a close game. Unfortunately their quest came up short, as they lost 12-7. Sundays game against the second team was a hard one - both teams played well. Strathmore walked away with another loss, but the boys played their hearts out thats for sure. This weekend the boys play in Standard at 1 p.m. against Nanton. It should be a good game for the boys - they have been working hard in practice and learning lots. We have a strong team and cant wait to put into action the things we have been working on. Feel free to come on down and cheer the boys on.
