Academy is located in Powder Springs Georgia. It is a local private school that has been up and running for 10 years. It is located in the Cobb County School district. There are several other private school located in this area. The school is affiliated with Trinity Chapel Church of God, we are located right next door to the church. TCA houses 300 students, as of this school year, as well as 25 certified staff member. Each grade level also has an aide that helps in the classroom with any student or teacher needs. TCA serves K-12th grades, with a principal for Elementary, Middle, and High school levels. We also have a headmaster who is the head of all levels. All students at TCA come from middle to high class families. We have a very welcoming family atmosphere where parents are always willing to help out. Sixty percent of the population at TCA is Caucasian with forty percent being African American. Our staff is made up of fifty nine percent Caucasian, one percent Hispanic, and twenty percent African American. The tuition at TCA is a little lower than the surrounding private schools. For lower grade levels the tuition begins at 5,000 dollars and goes up according to grade level. There are scholarships students can apply for to help pay for their schooling. TCA is fortunate to have a learning specialist to help assist students who have special needs. This is place where teachers can refer students to if they are Ashley Sanders

struggling and need additional help. She sees about 30 students on a regular basis. These students are Kindergarten to 8th grade. Unfortunately, the high school level does not offer any service to students. Students who go to the learning specialist are seen for specific needs like reading comprehension or phonics. They go anywhere from one day a week to five days a week depending on what they need help with. We also have a speech pathologist who works one day a week and sees on average of 7 kids. Each grade level has their own curriculum that they follow. Kindergarten uses the Abecca reading curriculum and 1st through 5th grade uses the Imagine It curriculum. The curriculum used is designed to push students and get them to think beyond just the normal skills. All teachers seem to really enjoy this curriculum and say their students benefit from it. The Media Center is located in the heart of the Elementary floor. These elementary students make up 180 of the school population. These are the students who use the media center on a daily basis. Students have access to over 6,000 books. The media center has an easy, fiction, non-fiction, and reference section. Technology is something that the school is currently working to expand. The media center has several computers that students may use to search for books or to use for class projects. There are a total of 4 Smartboards in the school, one being in the Elementary level and three being in High School. There are also nine projector screens housed within the school. Not all teachers have access to extra technology. Teachers can access BrainPop and United Streaming using their desktop computers. The main technology use is in Middle and High School with the use of MAC Laptops. All students are issued a laptop and are expected to complete all assignments on

these. The students textbooks are also all online. Teachers use a program called Classzone to access books and extra teaching materials. Technology is always changing and TCA is trying to be more advance and have more use of technology.

CURRICULUM REVIEW I chose to focus on Explorers and their reasons for exploration for this activity. This standard is taught in 4th grade and usually takes about 3 weeks to teach. At TCA there is one 4th grade class that consists of 24 students. Next year we will be expanding and having more students. The Social Studies curriculum covers this standard very well. There are no extra resources except for the Social Studies book. All of the students in 4th grade are reading on or above grade level. There is one student who attends speech once a week. There are also two students who see the Learning Specialist twice a week. The standard that goes with this topic is:

COLLECTION REVIEW: In order to begin this activity I first went into my media center and looked around to see if I saw any books on my topic. The media center is very organized and very easy to use. When going in media center the shelves are clearly labeled which makes it very easy to find books. The books are organized in alphabetical order but the authors last name. The non-fiction shelves are short shelves located in the middle of the media center. Theses books are organized according to reading level and have the appropriate colored sticker. There is a chart for students and teachers to use as a guide when looking at reading levels. The outside walls are lined with the fiction books. are clearly marked with the appropriate number. Reference materials are located in the corner of the media center but are not used too often. I began searching for books related to my topic. I began searching using the computer system to help me locate any books that had any information about explorers. I was sad to find that there were not many books on my topic. There were a total of 17 books on explorers but over half of them were about explorers that are not covered in this standard. I began to look at the books that the computer system had found. The books in the fiction section had very young information in them. They would be good for introducing the topic but did not give enough information based on the standard. The non - fiction section had a few that would be great for research purposes, but there were not many to choose from. The books were dated back and were very old. I could tell by looking at the wording in the books that students may have a hard time understanding them. They need books they can get information out of that is current and that they can understand. The books have not been used very often from the looks of them. When looking in the check out system the most a book had been checked out was 7 times. This is such a low number for the amount of time the book has been in the media center.

A consideration I made was looking at how these books lined up with the standards. When viewing all the books I saw that there were not enough materials to completely cover the standard. If a teacher wanted a book on each explorer she would not be able to find that in this media center. There were books discussing explorers but some of them are not relevant to this standard and some were missing certain explorers. I could not find any books or information on John Cabot. This is an explorer that students need to know about so information would have to come from other sources. This was a red flag and made me realize that as I plan my budget I need to make sure I include this explorer and have an equal amount of books on each. When looking through the books in the media center I noticed that there were not many multicultural books. They all seemed to be the same and did not offer any variety. This is a standard that would not need to be very diverse but could use some different aspects when discussing the explorers. When planning my budget I will consider this and try to buy books that are multicultural and have different views. In my search I looked for materials other than books, but had no luck. video it would need to be found on United Streaming. I will add some non - print resources to my budget list so teachers can have a variety of materials.

SUMMARY OF COLLECTION NEEDS: 1. Choose more current resources that have information that would be appealing to students. 2. Find multicultural resources. Not too many since this topic is very specific and has one view. 3. Search for non - print materials. 4. Find an equal amount of books on each explorer.

BUDGET SUMMARY I searched very thoroughly and used several different vendors when looking for books. I have a variety of books and non - print materials that will benefit students and teachers. I determined that I need $3980.25 for my collection. Each book discusses the explorers in the standard and gives useful information about each. The books range in age level and reading levels. I chose a variety of all grade levels so that students are able to find one that fits their level. I did not want to purchase all 4th grade level books because not all 4th graders are on a 4th grade level. This also gives the teacher flexibility with using the books to introduce the topics. I was also able to find some additional resources like websites with videos and flashcards. These can be used in any ways. I have listed each book and resource needed to make this media center diverse and helpful when teaching this standard.
