Topics for CE-Seminar SS 2011

1. Cylindrical shaped electrode and an electrical double layer Contact: Ekaterina.Gongadze@Uni-Rostock.de

In the project an electrical double layer model taking into account the spatial variation of the relative permittivity should be applied on a cylindrical shape electrode. The model should be implemented on Comsol Multiphysics platform and the students should analyze the electric potential distribution, charge density and their dependence on the permittivity.

2. Electric stimulation in the acetabular region Contact: Ulf.Zimmermann@Uni-Rostock.de

Electromagnetic elds have a direct inuence on the proliferation of osseous cells. To enhance the bone growth around an acetabular revision system, we want to stimulate the cells using electrodes which are implanted with this revision system. The task of the project is to stimulate the bone material around the implant with 5 to 100 V/m. The natural density uctuations of the bone material inuence the conductivity, which has a direct inuence on the eld propagation. The objective of this project is to simulate a simple geometry in a homogenous medium and to compare the results with an analytical solution. Afterwards the inuence of an inhomogenous medium should be investigated in a parameter study.

3. Parametric study of Fitzhugh-Nagumo Equations for Action Potential Propagation in Nerves. Contact: Revathi.Appali@Uni-Rostock.de
In this project students have to examine the eect of dierent parameters in the FitzhughNagumo equations on the propagation of action potential in the nerves / nerve cells. Each student in the group has to work with one or two parameters specically and collectively give the conclusions at the end.

4. Comparison of analytical and numerical solutions of electric elds Contact: Christian.Schmidt6@Uni-Rostock.de

Numerical analysis of the electric eld eects produced by implanted electric devices, like electrodes for Deep Brain Stimulation, is a complex problem. These can be modelled with the help of commercial software like COMSOL MULTIPHYSICS and CST STUDIO SUITE . To ensure the correctness of the numerical solution, a validation of the solution produced by the software is necessary. Task of this project is the investigation of the agreement of numerical solutions of problems modelled and simulated in page 1 of 4 15 Apr 2010

COMSOL MULTIPHYSICS and/or CST STUDIO SUITE with an analytical solution of the problem. Therefore convergence studies including the analysis of accuracy, meshdensity and geometry-dimensions should be realized. Students who want to work on this project should be familiar with COMSOL MULTIPHYSICS and CST STUDIO SUITE as well as with MATLAB or Mathematica.

5. Modeling and optimization of a Helix-Antenna Higher Order Mode Coupler Contact: Carsten.Potratz@Uni-Rostock.de
In particle accelerators, higher order mode coupler are used to dampen electromagnetic elds inside the accelerating structure which have been excited by the particle beam. These elds, if not properly suppressed, might interact with the trailing particle packages in an undesired way and can have negative eects on the total operation of the machine. In this small project, the student will use CST Microwave Studio to model a section of the beamline and a new kind of antenna higher order mode coupler with a helical shape to evaluate its ability to dampen certain modes.

6. Eigenmode Calculation of Spherical Resonators. Contact: Korinna.Brackebusch@Uni-Rostock.de

Resonant cavities are essential elements of particle accelarators. They are required to accelerate the charged particles and to supply them with energy. The characteristics of a resonant cavity are mainly determined by the eigenmodes that could exist inside the cavity. Task of this project is the analysis of eigenmodes using the example of spherical resonators. First an analytical description of the possible eigenmodes of a spherical resonator should to be derived from Maxwell's equations. Subsequently a model of such a resonator should be created in CST Microwave Studio to perform a numerical eigenmode computation. Finally a comparison of the analytical description and the CST simulation results should be accomplished and critically judged.

7. Tracking of Charged Particles. Contact: Gisela.Poeplau@Uni-Rostock.de

The tracking of charged particles is a demanding application in accelerator sciences. In this project students will consider a benchmark problem and track particles with commercial and non-commercial software. The particle trajetories obtained by dierent computer codes will be compared and visualized.

8. Computation of the R/Q Parameter for Eigenmodes of Simplied Cavities Contact: Thomas.Flisgen@Uni-Rostock.de
RF cavity resonantors are cruical subparts of a particle accelerators. A special type of cavity resonance, the so called -mode, is used to accelerate the particles. Beside this mode an innite number of other modes are able to oscillate inside the cavity (Higher Order Modes). The R/Q parameter can be used to describe the interaction between beams of charged particles passing the cavity and HOMs in the cavity (or vice versa). In this project an eigenmode computation of a simplied structure has to be performed with CST STUDIO SUITE . Subsequent, the eld distribution of the modes has to be exported to MATLAB using the devoted DLL library. From this data the R/Q ratio has to be computed for dierent beam positions using numerical integration schemes. As a nal step, the obtained parameters should be compared to those acquired by postprocessing of CST STUDIO SUITE directly. Interested students should have
good experience in programming with MATLAB, fundamental knowledge about electrodynamics and the ability to solve problems in an autonomous manner.

9. An Eigenmode Problem concerned on rotational symmetric structures Contact: Mirjana.Ivanovska@Uni.Rostock.de

The goal of this project is the calculation of resonant frequencies in resonators with a rotational symmetric structure, as well as the corresponding electromagnetic elds(eigenmodes, eigenvector solutions). A loss free problem in cylindrical coordinates will be observed. The realization of the task will take place in CST STUDIO SUITE and in the computing enviroment of Wolfram MATHEMATICA . The results obtained from the eigenmode solver in CST studio will be compared with an already existing eigenmode solver code in MATHEMATICA .

10. Constructive Solid Geometry using MATHEMATICA Contact: Hans-Walter.Glock@Uni-Rostock.de

The term "Constructive Solid Geometry", CSG, denotes the description of complicated geometrical shapes as logical composition of geometrical primitives like spheres, cylinders, planes, bricks, bodies of revolution or extrusion of curves etc.. More complex shapes are constructed using logical operations (OR, AND, NOT) for combinations of primitives in the three dimensional space. CSG has the ability to give compact and - most important page 3 of 4 15 Apr 2010

parameterized descriptions of structures of technical relevance used as input information for grid construction needed in the numerical simulation of physical eects of any kind. Aim of the project is to investigate the abilities of the scientic computation software Wolfram MATHEMATICA , which provides (in its most recent version 8) commands both for the visualization and grid generation of CSG-constructed shapes. These commands should be extended by self-written routines in order to get a set of graphical primitives appropriate for electromagnetic eld simulations of typical accelerator components like cavities and couplers.

Furthermore the properties of discretization meshes generated by MATHEMATICA should be assessed, including the technical and computational eorts of the meshing procedure. If possible the construction of an interface to our own simulation software is desirable, but not mandatory. If you consider to work on this project, you:
should have fun, routine and persistence in mastering new programming concepts. may have some experience in MATHEMATICA

or at least in functional program-

ming.
should be familiar with elementary mathematics of geometrical transformations (e.g.

you should know how a rotation matrix in three dimensions reads, and why).
are expected to have a self-responsible method of working.

Your prot will be:

to become familiar with MATHEMATICA

to learn the concepts (and some mathematics) of CSG, to be introduced in some aspects of particle accelerator technology.

11. Impedance Studies of Cochlea Membranes Contact: Annekathrin.Gruenbaum@Uni-Rostock.de

The project goal is to examine the impedance of a membrane, which is placed in the cochlea (a part of the ear). Therefore, the students have to observe the behaviour of the impedance of a layer with certain material properties that represents the membrane. The layer moves between two electrodes. The simulation tool that will be used is COMSOL MULTIPHYSICS . page 4 of 4 15 Apr 2010
