Cal-Nev-Ha Receives Top Honors at International Convention

Tami Bi, Fourth-Year Pillow Fight Chair From June 22-26, Circle K members from all parts of the world traveled to the 56th Annual Circle K International Convention held at the Virginia Beach Resort & Conference Center in Virgina Beach, VA. ICON is one of the most important events for Circle K because it is the time in which we elect the International Board as well as the Subregional representatives. In addition to the elections, there were informative workshops for club leadership and development, a great keynote speaker (Jason Barger, the author and creator of the Step Back from the Baggage Claim movement), a dance night (interesting choice of music), a talent show (in which Ryan Ocampo from UNLV took part in) and much more. One of the things UCLA took a part in was the Service Fair. Representing the annual fundraising and service project Pillow Fight, a colorful poster board was created. This appealed and caught the interest of many colleges, inspiring them to possibly host one themselves. For many of the Cal-Nev-Ha members, ICON turned out to be a great opportunity to spend quality time with one another; in

short, developing fellowship. For UCLA students, this was the first time in which we spent 4 days getting to know people personally from outside our division. In my opinion, if I didnt attend ICON, I dont think I would have met people some amazing people like John and Jhaneive Licas of ASU, David Rozul of CSU San Diego, or Francis Sakai-Kawada of University of Hawaii at Hilo. To enhance fellowship even more at closing ceremony, every Circle K member wrote down their name and a goal in life, folded it, and threw it along the sides of the room. Afterwords, everyone picked one up. Each person was then ac-

countable for supporting and making sure that the person they choose will achieve their goal. The CNH District had 22 members from 13 schools in attendance. We received 35 awards; 5 of which were from UCLA: 1st Place Non-traditional Scrapbook 2nd Place Distinguished Club 2nd Place Growth Enhances Membership 2nd Place T-shirt 3rd Place Video CHN is continuing to grow and has remained the largest district. With a new year to come, there is no doubt that CNH will, yet again, dominate at ICON.

Metro Division Goes All Out with Water Wars

Getting Wet with Metro doesnt exactly sound like an event for kids. However, on the afternoon of July 31st, Metro Division relived their childhood with a water gun/balloon fight in Wilson Park. This splashtastic social was combined with the divisions monthly DCM, hosted by Cal State Dominguez Hills. Not only this, but the continuation of the team games from last months DCM was incorporated. Jonjon Junpradub, LTG of Metro Division; Brandon Baello, President of CSUDH; and Connie Lam, K-Fam Chair of UCLA worked together to bring this event to fruition. The start of the event was relatively organized and collected, a misleading calm before the storm. After chowing down on wieners and watermelon, Metro Division started their DCM promptly at 2 PM. Immediately following the DCM came the team games, consisting of a 4-legged relay race and a Grossosity Test. In Connie Lam, Second-Year Kiwanis Family Co-Chair this horrendous test of willpower, USC and UCLAs very own Rich Ung stood side by side on the same team. Both braved a horrific concoctionTapatio, 3 week-old meat, Siracha, lemon juice, vinegar, blinded maggots, and many other disgusting ingredients-brewed by our very own Jonjon. Surprisingly, it tasted very much like V8. After the games came total chaos, in the form of over 300 water balloons. Flashes of bright neon color and victims screams all aroundthe war had begun. With a stubborn family on a picnic in their midst, Metro tested the boundaries of their division as they attacked one another with bombs of water. Not a single patch of clothing was left dry. In the end, everyone was able to come together to pick up the remains of war-- littered remains of water balloons. They then headed off to Get Shaved for some Monkey Brainsa peace offering. Until next time, that is

Keeping Cool with Skates: Circle K on Ice

Reminiscing with Service in the Arts: Symphony in the Cities

Ever wonder how Circle K would look as an ice-skating show? Well, Circle K on Ice!... wasnt exactly a show, but it was the closest the club would get! During the sunny afternoon of June 28, UCLA Circle K headed to KHS Ice Arena, located in Anaheim, to attend this Fundraising and K-Fam event. A blast of cold air struck against the summer heat inside the arena as the doors opened. Circle Kers congregated at the front entrance, where UCLA K-Fam Chair, Brian Kan (all suited-up for the occasion), welcomed everyone and passed out waivers for people to sign. The attendees consisted mainly of UCLA and UC Irvine members, with a handful of others, including OCC and CSUN. Once the attendees signed the waiver, paid the admission of $10, and put on their rented skates, Circle K finally gathered on the ice rink! The rink, previously empty as another group just left, soon had Circle Kers zoom around everywhere. Many paired or grouped up with their friends, laughing as they skated to their hearts content. The chilly air became a distant memory as people blazed around the arena. Those who were tired eventually sat down on the sides, and many conversations and introductions there led to a lot of great, new friendships. A few members even had their very first skating experience here! Ariana Arestegui, president of CSUN, struggled around the rink at first, as well as I myself. Gerardo Del Toro entered the rink late and, like us, also kept close to the walls of the rink. But thanks to some caring and patient friends, we slowly edged away from the wall with more confidence and were able to skate slowly by ourselves. Without them, we definitely would not have enjoyed the event as much as we did. This was perhaps one of the best experiences of the event; it was very heartwarming to see so many Circle Kers help and support each other - quite literally, in this case! Overall, everyone had a lot of fun, and many members agreed to meet for an after social around the area. UCLA Circle K overall made $128 from this event, and its all thanks to Brian Kan, who did an excellent job organizing and chairing this event! After that days performance, Circle K will undoubtedly be able to put on a fantastic show during the next ice-skating event!

I love Pacific Symphony. Back in high school, I used to frequently volunteer with them with their family concerts and whatnot, all the while receiving a free show at the same time. For our club to finally be able to have a music-related service event and work with them made me incredibly happy. This event in particular took place in Orange County, of course, at a park in Irvine. The symphony orchestra was to perform to families and locals, as well as meet and interact with their audience. The concert was a part of their summer concert series, Symphony in the Cities. Aside from our members, there were plenty of other volunteers, including OCCs Circle K! That was certainly a lovely surprise; we spent some time after the event talking and bonding amongst ourselves.

All the volunteers were essentially in charge of working around the musical playground area, where children were given the chance to explore music and become more educated themselves. Our lot was in charge of distributing Bugs Bunny concert flyers to everyone at the event, aiming towards families with children. We were split up into girls and guys coincidentally, and it was amusing racing against the boys. (We won, of course.) Ive always had a soft spot with Pacific Symphony, as it used to be one of my dreams to perform with them one day. Granted it still is, but Im still rather content just being able to work and volunteer with them.
