TOOTH MODIFICATIONS

1. Why are we doing this? 2. What surfaces rst and why? 3. What modications can be made on vertical surfaces? 4. What modications can be made on horizontal surfaces? 5. What depth are occlusal rests prepared to? 6. What depth are incisal rests prepared to? 7. What is a possible problem in preparing cingulum rests? 8. What is a common problem with embrasure clasp preparation? 9. What other uses do tooth modications have? 10. What about modifying crowned teeth?

1. Why????...optomize contours of teeth for our design!!

2. What surfaces rst and why?

Vertical! If an occlusal rest (horizontal) was done rst you would destroy the rest contour when you did guide planes and then would have to go back and remodify your rest. Think about it!

What modications can be made on a vertical surface? 1. Guide planes: know their locations on a tooth? 2. Improve retentive areasadd or remove. 3. Reduce insertion interferences. 4. Lower survey lines.

What modications can be made on horizontal surfaces?

What depth are occlusal rests prepared to?

Lower M.R. 1.5mm

Approx. 2mm
WIDTH = 1/3 OF CUSP WIDTH

What depth are incisal rests prepared to?

PRESERVE LATERAL WALL

C. INCISAL REST

What is a possible problem in preparing cingulum rests?

Undercu@ing facial wall!

What is a common problem with embrasure clasp preparation?

2 mm

2 mm

Insucient reduction leading to BREAKAGE!!!!!!!!!

WHAT OTHER TOOTH MODIFICATIONS CAN BE DONE THAT DONT RELATE DIRECTLY TO THE RPD DESIGN?

1. Esthetic Modication 2. Occlusal plane adjustment

DONT FORGET TO POLISH
