Project Management

PROJECT MANAGEMENT KNOWLEDGE AREAS

• PROJECT INTEGRATION MANAGEMENT

The specified area has to coordinate all aspects of project plan
and is highly interactive.

a) Project Plan Development: Weighing the Objectives of the

project
b) Project Plan Execution: alternatives available
c) Integrated Change Control: change control impacts the
project plan, which in turn impact execution.

These three processes are very tightly linked together. Project

planning & execution involves weighing the objectives of
the project against the alternatives to bring the project to a
successful completion.

• PROJECT SCOPE MANAGEMENT

Project scope management is concerned with the work of
project & only the work of project that is required to
complete the project. It goes through five processes:

a) Initiation = OBJECTIVE
b) Scope planning [SCOPE = Capacity, Possibilities]
c) Scope definition [Possible WHAT’s & HOW’s to do]
d) Scope verification [ Are the defined
prospective/details positive & executable]
e) Scope change control [Managing change
throughout the process]

These steps involves detailing the requirements, the product

& the activities that will eventually comprise the project
plane, verifying those details using measurement techniques, &
controlling change of these processes.

• PROJECT TIME MANAGEMENT
Project time management also go through five processes:
a) Activity definition
b) Activity Sequencing
c) Activity duration estimating
d) Schedule development [Software’s =PMS & WEBS]
e) Schedule control [ which control system will
execute when]

This knowledge area deals with completing the project in a

timely manner. Sometimes only one person is needed to
complete all five processes and they are all worked on at
the same time.

Time management is an important aspect of project

management as it concerns keeping the activities on track &
monitoring those activities against the project plan to ensure
that the project is completed on time.

• PROJECT COST MANAGEMENT

The knowledge area concerns around costs & budget. The
activities involved are as follows:
a) Resource planning
b) Cost estimation
c) Cost budgeting
d) Cost control

Here we establish estimates of costs & resources and keep

watch over those costs to ensure that the project says with in
the approved budget.

Depending upon the complexity of the project these activities

might need more then one person, for example the finance
person might not have expertise in the resource planning
area, so the PM will need to bring in a staff member with the
relevant skills to complete resource planning.

To ensure that we meet the requirements that the project
was undertake to produce.

These processes measures overall performance, and monitor

project results and compare them to the quality standards
set out in the project planning process, to make sure that the
product or services are according to the expectations of the
customer.

The knowledge is composed of the following three processes:

a) Quality planning
b) Quality assurance
c) Quality control

• PROJECT HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Related with people management and personal interaction
including Leading, coaching and conflict management.

Some of the project participants whom you will get to

practice these skills include stakeholders, team members
and customers. Each requires the use of different
communication style, leadership & team building skills.

The project HR knowledge area contains the following processes:

a) Organizational planning
b) Staff acquisition
c) Team building [forming, storming, norming, storming]

• PROJECT COMMUNICATION MANAGEMENT

project communication management knowledge area seek
to ensure that all project information including project plans,
risk assessment, meeting notes and more is collected &
documented.

As project close the information is achieved and used as a

reference for future projects.

• PROJECT RISK MANAGEMENT

These processes are concerned with identifying and planning
for potential risks that may impact the project.
Contains six processes:
a) Risk management planning [ plan for UNEXPECTED]
b) Risk identification [SPECULATE]
c) Qualitative risk analysis
d) Quantitative risk analysis
e) Risk response planning
f) Risk monitoring

Risk identification, Qualitative & Quantitative risk analysis might

be performed at the same time.
The important thing about this process is that you should strive
to identify all risks & develop responses for those with the
greatest consequences to the project objectives.
