SECTION A (60 MARKS) Answer all questions.

1.

a) State four (4) advantages of using the Reader Response Theory in the ESL literature classroom. Provide examples for each of the benefits mentioned. (8 marks)

b) Briefly discuss six (6) principles of Reader Response Theory a teacher needs to adhere to in adopting this approach in a literature class as postulated by Probst (1994). (12 marks)

2.

a) What is the main objective of the current approaches in the use of literature in the language classroom? (4 marks)

b) Explain clearly with examples six (6) advantages of using literature in ESL classroom. (6 marks)

c) Today, the trend in teaching literature is through an integrated approach. Discuss. Provide examples where necessary. (10 marks)

3.

a) Briefly discuss the rationale for employing reading aloud in the teaching of poetry in the Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Rendah (KSSR). (4 marks)

b) Describe briefly any four (4) types of choral reading to teach poetry. (6 marks)

c) Choose any one (1) type of choral reading as suggested in Question 3(b) and describe the procedure you would follow to teach the poem in page 3 to your Year 3 students. (10 marks)

a) List four (4) objectives for introducing Children's Literature in the Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Rendah (KSSR). (4 marks)

b) Explain briefly two (2) factors for each category of gains/benefits in implementing Children's Literature in the KSSR. (6 marks)

3.

b) Provide two (2) strengths for each of the activities you have selected in Question 3 (a) (4 marks)

c) Select one of the while-reading activities mentioned in Question 3 (a) and briefly outline the lesson procedure you would execute in Year 2 classroom. Include example(s) of consonant or vowel sounds you wish to emphasize. (9 marks)
