The second is Psalm 110:1, quoted in Acts 2:34-35 of our text: For David did not ascend into

the heavens, but he says himself: 'The LORD said to my Lord, "Sit at My right hand, 35 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool."

Peter's argument was that this cannot be applied to David because he did not ascend to Heaven; therefore, it must apply to the resurrected Messiah.

Peter's preaching was full of Christhis incarnation, his crucifixion, his resurrection, and his ascension. That is why the sermon was so great!

Peter's Greatest Sermon

Peter's first sermon was probably his best. It is perhaps, aside from our Lord's sermons, the greatest ever preached.

Greatest because of the place it occupies in the history of redemption (it is the inaugural sermon of the age of grace), Greatest by its pure results (there were 3,000 converts) Greatest by virtue of its being a model for apostolic preaching.

A preliminary glance reveals several reasons why this was one of the greatest sermons every preached.

Peter Told Them About Jesus

Acts 2:22-37

It was simple. It was Scriptural. It was Christ-centered. It was convicting. It was practical.

In Acts 2:22, Peter told them about the Incarnation. In Acts 2:23, Peter told them about the Crucifixion In Acts 2:24, Peter told them about the Resurrection

It was attention-getting and relevant.

Peter supported his argument for the Resurrection by quoting two mysterious Psalms that could only be fulfilled by Christ.

He Simply Told Them What Had Happened Acts 2:16-21

1. Peter was full of the word

The first, Psalm 16:8-11, could not have been fulfilled by David because it speaks of someone whom the grave could not hold and who did not undergo decay. David's body remained in its grave and deteriorated. Peter explained this in Acts 2:29-33: "Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, 31 he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. 33 Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.

Karl Barth put it this way, "If thou art a learned man, take care lest with all thy erudite reading thou forgettest perchance to read God's Word."

2. Peter was full of the Spirit.
