Course Description: PED 189 is designed to provide students the opportunity to improve muscular strength and endurance through the utilization of resistant weight training. Textbooks and Other Materials: Hesson, J. L. (2000). Strength training for life. (5th ed.). Englewood, CO: Morton Publishing. Course Objectives: 1. Acquire a basic knowledge of the muscular system of the body. 2. Acquire knowledge regarding the effects of weight training on the human body. 3. Learn weightlifting exercises that utilize: a) machines b) barbells and c) dumbbells 4. Acquire the knowledge to design a personal fitness program that includes weightlifting 5. Attempt to increase strength and alter body composition. Course Requirements: 1. Completion of two (2) exams (one during exam week). 2. Completion required papers and assignments 3. Participation in class activities. 4. Regular attendance and proper dress. Contents That Make Up Your Grade: 25% Exams = 25 points (Multiple Choice, True/False, Written) 40% Attendance and Participation = 40 points 25% Individualized Fitness Program = 25 points 10 % Assignment = 10 points 100% Grading Scale: 90 100 % = A 80 - 89 % = B 70 79% = C 60 69% = D Under 60% = E Key Notes: This course involves vigorous activity and each student is responsible for informing the instructor of any health factors that may pose a risk.

The final exam is required of all students and will be administered on the last day of class.

Absences totaling 25 % (8 or fewer) of the class meetings will result in an automatic N or F.

Exams: There will be two (2) exams in this class. The first exam will be a written exam constituting of multiple choice, true/false, and essay. This exam will cover all material covered from the start of class on. The second exam will be a test on the knowledge of a lift using at least 3 muscle groups (squat, dead lift, clean, snatch, etc.). You will be required to explain the muscle groups involved as well as proper technique of the lift.

Attendance and Participation: In order to improve your overall fitness level, attendance at each class is essential. Absences totaling 25% or more of the class meetings will result in the student receiving an E for the semester. Weightlifting is an activity class; therefore regular attendance is critical for meeting fitness goals. Attendance will be taken every class period at the beginning and at the end of class. Students are expected to be in class on time and dressed appropriately for physical activity. You are allowed two absences per semester. Use these absences wisely for illness, death in the family, and any other extenuating circumstance. Any absence over the 2 absences maximum will result in a 5 point deduction of the total grade. Tardiness of two classes will count as one absence. Assignments: The assignment for this class is a two paragraph summary of an article related to strength and conditioning or physical education. The original article must be printed and attached to the paper. This will be due on January 24, 2011 in class. Individualized Fitness Program: The individualized fitness program is a workout regimen that the student creates on their own. The contents of each lifting day should take material learned in class as well as demonstrate knowledge of the body systems. When turned in the program should include the workout printed on an excel sheet for a 4 week period so that your progression can be mapped. **IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ALL** Each day class meets; every student is responsible for dressing out in proper PE attire. After each day of instruction or lecture, there will be time for practicing the exercises and/or working out. Proper attire includes gym shoes, gym shorts or warm-up pants, and t-shirt or warm-up shirt. There are no exceptions to this dress code. If you do not meet the dress code it will count as an absence. Each CMU student is encouraged to help create an environment during class that promotes learning, dignity and mutual respect for everyone. Students who speak at inappropriate times, sleep in class, display inattention, take frequent breaks, interrupt the class by coming to class late, engage in loud or distracting behaviors, use cell phones or pagers in class, use inappropriate language, are verbally abusive, display defiance or disrespect to others, or behave aggressively toward others could be asked to leave the class and subjected to disciplinary action under the Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities and Disciplinary Procedures.
