Savary, especially someone who directly affects your life. Brown has spent much time receiving treatments such as chemotherapy at the Childrens National Medical Center, or Childrens Hospital in Washington, DC. A recent blood test has shown that Brown is responding positively to her treatments and the cancerous cells are reducing. The treatments have exhausted her but she is staying in high spirits. Says Brown, Right now I cant participate in anything, but I look forward to being able to [be active again]. She has always been very athletic, making varsity cheerleading this year. Once she is fully recovered she hopes to participate in a spring sport and continue cheerleading next year. Her family and friends are working to build up her strength and keep her occupied through various events and gatherings. Mother Leslie Brown-Savary says, Because its your child, you have to be strong - if not stronger. Mrs. BrownSavary created a CaringBridge blog (http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/kathrynbrown1) dedicated to her daughter and her recovery. Funds have also been raised through the creation of I Support KGB bracelets, designed by freshman Samantha Lowenthal, which are rapidly being sold for three dollars each. Says Savary, Its great to

Students and members of the Blake community have come together to support freshman Kathryn Brown who was diagnosed with Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a form of liver cancer, in early September. After not feeling well for several weeks and visiting her doctor to get some tests run, Brown discovered a lump in her stomach area. When the test results were returned, she was diagnosed with HCC. You hear that people get cancer, but you never think its going to be someone you know, says step-sister, junior Laura

Many of the athletic teams have also shown their support in various ways, including putting tape with Browns initials on their gear. With the community behind her, Brown hopes to return to school sometime early next year. For now, she is participating in the Home and Hospital program to complete the school work she has missed. Between treatments and schooling, Brown enjoys the company of her friends. I see that light in her eyes when they come to visit, says Mrs. Brown-Savary. It hurts for her to laugh, but its nice to hear it sometimes.

Exploring the world is a dream that many dont fulfill in their lifetimes, but 2009 alumna Kelly Shih is making her dream a reality through the University of Marylands study abroad program in Chile. Shih is traveling with International Studies Abroad and will stay in Chile until December. Previous to her trip, she considered herself very well traveled, but was surprised to feel the culture shock after arriving in Chile. Though she knew some Spanish, there were still language barriers. Although I can usuallyget my point across, says Shih, sometimes its really frustrating to have to think so hard just to have a conversation. Shih is a political science major, and her experience has been nothing but educational in that field. Chile was run by a military dictatorship but is now one of the most economically stable countries in South America. However, some violence from the tyranny still remains. Chilean students have been on strike for over three months to protest for a free and higher quality education. Shih participated in one of the students marches, and notes that the protests often end in a riot. Adds Shih, [It was] the first time Ive ever been tear gassed and watched huge police tanks advancing on protesters that

are throwing bricks and rocks at the police. Shih arrived in Chile in July along with 50 other students, none of whom she knew. She has been making new friends and enjoying many first time experiences while in Chile. She has been skiing in the Andes, riding horses with Argentinean cowboys and bonding with her host family. She has become extremely close with her four new siblings and refers to them as her brothers and sisters. Even with the differences, Shih feels that Chile has given her a new perspective. Shih adds, I hope I will be able to take these experiences back to the US to enrich my understanding of political science.

are many benefits from joining this group including being involved in many beneficial events and endless opportunities for scholarships and public service. Sponsored by English teacher Elizabeth Jones, the NEHS has been working their hardest to gain publicity in the school. They have been planning a book drive for DC public school libraries which states Monday and will continue until October 20. Students can donate any genre or length of book. This year has welcomed many members into the NEHS, like junior Aryn Frazier. Its such a great opportunity for me, says Frazier. I can engage myself so much into this group and its focused on a class that I truly enjoy. Only juniors and seniors can participate in this group but second semester sophomores can apply for their junior year. Junior Candace Grant is one of the two event coordinators, whose job is to help plan and give ideas for upcoming events that should be planned. Says Grant, When I first heard about the group I knew I wanted to join not just to help other people but to help myself become a better writer. Although the year has just begun, the NEHS is already planning future events. They are coordinating with Stonegate Elementary to have pen pals with their students and read to them. Their goal is to spread the power of books and influence younger kids to read and write more.

English-focused club promotes youth literacy

For Blakes best English students, the National English Honor Society (NEHS) is the place to be for discussing ideas, enriching literary minds and planning events that encourage reading. The group was created last year by senior Vanessa Newman. After seeing that NEHS existed at college levels and some high schools, she started to look into bringing it to Blake. English is my favorite subject and I wanted to create an organization for those who love it and excel in it as well, says Newman. To join you need a 3.0 cumulative GPA, submission of a writing piece and a love for the English language. There

Spirit week 2011 brings fun, excitement with reinstated class color day
Benny Bengal and the Chocolate Factory spirit week will officially kick off Thursday; spirit week will be October 17 to October 21, ending with the annual Homecoming Dance October 22. This years spirit week will feature only four spirit days, including pajama day, throwback day, wacky tacky day and class color day. The return of the latter Bengal tradition will undoubtedly restore class and school spirit. I am ready to go all outand show off the pride of my class, says junior Katia Segura. The privilege of class color day goes hand in hand with accountability. Senior Elizabeth Butler says, I hope that the students understand the seriousness of hazing and the responsibilities we hold to be able to keep this day. Homecoming will be from 7:30pm to 11:30pm. Confirmed bands performing include Untamed and Point Blank. Tickets will be sold for $15 from Tuesday through Friday, and will also be available during spirit week for $20. All students must arrive by 9pm and only seniors can bring a guest from outside of school. Much controversy had encircled the Pep Rally, scheduled for October 21, as students are off of school due to the Maryland State Teachers Association convention. Guidance counselor and SGA sponsor Christina Gelb says, We wanted to change things up a little bit this year. The pep rally will be in the main gym at 4:45pm and is open to the entire Blake community; the homecoming court will be announced during this time. Promptly after the pep rally, the Homecoming game will begin. The football team will take on Blair at 6:30pm in the

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory will be aired in the amphitheater at 7pm Thursday. The Student vs. Staff Basketball game will be October 17 in the main gym at 7pm and will cost $2, and October 18 will feature a free Battle of the Classes in the main gym, as well. We want to encourage as many students to come out to the event, says Ms. Gelb. Its a great way to come out and have some fun. The popular hallway decorations Blake has will be set up October 19 from 2:10pm to 8pm. October 20 will feature a clash between the junior and senior classes for the Powder Puff game at 6pm in the stadium; the cost is $5.

Mentoring program expands to all freshmen with below 2.0 GPA

Upperclassmen tutors offer daily extra help for struggling students
by Savannah Doane-Malotte x & Leah Patterson
After a year of assisting freshmen with low GPAs, Blakes Freshman Mentoring Program has made several changes that have affected the size of the program and the involvement of the mentees. The group has extended to include all freshmen with GPAs less than a 2.0, while previously only including a select few struggling ninth graders. This expansion has increased the amount of students involved from two classrooms-full to six classrooms. [Our goal is that] students stop destructive academic and personal life choices, says English teacher Omari Daniel. [We hope that] students learn to love themselves and ensure themselves great futures. They are also changing the way students are divided into classrooms. Previously, the classrooms were separated by gender, but now some rooms are divided by race. Says senior mentor Mary Fernandes, It allows the students to feel more comfortable within their own race while probably knowing others in the same room. Last year the Hispanic Leadership Club (HLC) became involved with the program after expressing interest in participating in a group that benefited their peers. Their sponsor, Spanish teacher Monica Abuliak, introduced them to the Mentoring Program created by Dr. Daniel and they found it a worth-while cause. Every day at lunch, mentors and mentees meet in their respective classrooms to work on class work, learn study habits, improve organizational skills and convene with the students teachers. Says senior mentor Kevin Wang, I find the program rewarding, especially at the end of the year when you see that the students you tutor are back on the right track and the numbers really show you made an impact. To become a mentor, juniors and seniors worked through a series of recruitment sessions. Now mentors spend about 20 minutes of their lunch everyday to work with the struggling freshmen. [Mentoring] helps me work with other people and helps them become better students, says junior mentor Lucas Tax, and that makes the mentor and also the student a better person. These mentors are often recognized by the PTSA with rewards like SSL hours. The Freshmen Mentoring Program sponsors are currently looking for more peer mentors within the student body. Mentors must be in 11th grade, have a 3.0 or over and be enrolled in extracurricular activities. Please contact Ms. Abuliak, Dr. Daniel or US History teacher Robert Loftus for more information.

Key Club comes to Blake, offers scholarships to joining members

xby Larisha Winley & Janine Taira
Student leaders have worked hard for the past month to formally establish a branch of the Key Club, a service-oriented club sponsored by Leisure World Kiwanis organization in the school. Kiwanis scholarships are reserved for only two schools in the countyEinstein, which has over 100 members in their Key Club, and Blake. With no official Key Club last year, Kiwanis donated over $40,000 in scholarships to the entire student body. This year, scholarships will be limited to members of the Key Club. Says Elaine Noss, Kiwanis Leisure World leader and

Pierre adds, Key club is important because it will help students not only get SSL hours but to become better leaders. Key Club is the largest and oldest leadership organization in existence. Members are required to do 50 hours of community service per year. Says sponsor Ms.

sponsor, We thought [the scholarships] might be an added incentive [to establish the Key Club at Blake]. [The scholarship is] perfect because it recognizes those club members who did outstandingly well, adds senior Jenny Chiu. Its a good motivation for people. Elections for officers were held September 21. Chiu is now president, junior Fenguese Pierre is vice president, sophomore Lillian Hallmark is secretary, senior Taylor Turner

Sharon Ricks, My desire is that students join the Key Club or any other school club so that they can fully develop and discover their leadership abilities. The club encourages high school students to lead within their schools and communities and even at the international level. Junior Kevin Cheung says, I want to have a chance to give back to the community and I want to build my character and learn leadership skills. Each club has the opportunity to choose their own service projects, but all branches are asked to raise funds for the three Key Club International service partners: Childrens Miracle Network, March of Dimes and UNICEF.

University of Maryland prepares seniors to become freshmen again

by Joal Chen x & Vanessa Newman
Junior and senior students along with their parents learned all there is to know about the college application process from guidance counselors and University of Maryland College Park admissions officer during College Night September 27. College Nights purpose was to prepare seniors for the college application process. Students and parents were walked through the admission timeline and the steps along the way. Senior Lucy Harrelson says, I [attended in hopes of getting] information on how to send out recommendation letters. Asking for recommendation letters, sending in transcripts and essay writing tips were all included in the evenings program. Colleen Newman, an admissions officer, started the meeting with an introduction to UMD College Park, a school that over 1000 Blake students have applied to. She focused on specifically the universitys admissions. [College night] raises awareness about the admissions process, says Ms. Newman. There is a lot of perceived secrecy about [it]. Colleges need to work more on transparency. UMD College Park does not use the common application, so prospective students may mail in or go to the schools website to apply. Ms. Newman emphasized the importance of having a diverse, well-rounded student body. Ms. Newman adds, We look for students who have prepared themselves academically and shown an interest in something. Guidance counselors Jeff Flach and Gale Reynolds spoke with students about the college application process, explaining when and how to ask for letters of recommendation and send in transcripts. The guidance counselors advised students and parents to ask for a letter of recommendation early so teachers have enough time to write a good letter. They also ask students to allow 15 days for processing when they request a transcript. An important component for a lot of schools along with a students extracurriculars and transcript is their SAT scores. Representatives from Revolution Prep, Kaplan Prep and StudyWorks were set up at College Night to inform students on the importance of the SAT. The SAT is not an intelligence test. It is a test of how well you can take this one test, says Revolution Prep representative, Abby Horowitz. But its a hurdle you have to jump over. Ms.Horowitz also advises students

to practice. Ms. Horowitz adds, [Practice] as much as you canit gives you a great edge. Senior Cadijah Walcott used flash cards and did multiple practice tests to prepare for the SAT. She also used the College Board SAT Question of the Day. They are very nice, because I am able to check my email multiple times a dayand they give me tips. Despite the many tasks at hand for students applying to college, Ms. Newman advises students to enjoy the college application time. [Applying to college] is supposed to be fun, but it seems as if its the most stressful time. Enjoy it!

New school year brings fresh faces to Blakes busy halls

Recently hired staff members offer unique outlook to Bengal classrooms
by Emily Eaglin xby Emily Eaglin & Michael Errigo x& Michael Errigo
Many new faces may be seen in the hallways this year as 20 teachers have been added to all departments of the staff, arriving from a variety of local schools and several intriguing jobs. Some of the new additions include two physical education teachers, five paraeducators and a signature program coordinator. Many of the teachers are coming from other high schools, and almost all of them come from schools in the area. In every case, there was something about Blake that captivated them. I was impressed with the organization of this school, says new English teacher Matthew MacLeod. For a new teacher coming in after the school year began, that was very attractive. Mr. MacLeod has spent the last two years teaching English as a second language at Isahaya Commercial High School in Isahaya, Japan. He has had to adjust to his new position quicker than most having just returned to the United States in August. Despite the short adjustment period, Mr. MacLeod is eager to get involved here at Blake. Says Mr. MacLeod, I hope that I can make a positive impression here so that students, parents and even other teachers feel that they can rely on me. Peter Daddone, who is the new signature coordinator, also joined the English department. Mr. Daddone previously worked at Rockville High School before coming to Blake. He looks forward to getting to know the school and its students this year. The student enthusiasm has been fantastic, says Mr. Daddone. It makes me want to work harder as a teacher. Christine Di Monte also joins the English staff from Clarksburg High School. New math teacher Mike Krawczel worked at Northwest High School for the past 11 years and is looking forward to a fresh start. However, Mr. Krawczel is not new to Blake, as he taught at the school previously for two years. Mr. Krawczel is also the coach of the Girls tennis team and the JV Girls lacrosse team. Joining the science department are Earth and Space teachers Amy Larsen and Zac Cornell. Ms. Larsen previously taught at Banneker Middle School for three years. I look forward to more mature students, more productive work time, and the sense that I am honestly contributing to students background knowledge in science, says Ms. Larsen. Since Mrs. Larsen is coming from a school that feeds into Blake, she is familiar with many students here. Ms. Larsen says, Its really neat to see the growth of some of the students I taught one, two and [even] three years ago. Physical education also received two new additions this year, Nan Martino and Margo Hopkins. Mrs. Martino is joining the staff after teaching for seven years at Einstein High School; Ms. Hopkins is coming from Gaithersburg Middle School. Mrs. Martino looks forward to being welcomed into the Blake community. I love PE because for five periods a day, I get to meet new people, says Mrs. Martino. Three new teachers have joined the history department, David Edlow from Northwood High School, Tiferet Ani from Parkland Middle School and first year teacher Emily Morales. Mr. Edlow also teaches physical education and is the Boys Varsity Soccer coach. Para-educators Kathleen Kaercher, Abu Kamara, Cherie Conrad and Mackenzie Phelps have also joined the Blake staff. Ms. Phelps is originally from Magruder High School, while Mrs. Kaercher, Mrs. Conrad and Mr. Kamara were previously substitutes for the school system. As para-educators, they work alongside teachers to provide a helping hand to students. The kids here have so much potential and I love helping them work toward their goals, says Mrs. Kaercher. Para-educators are instructional teachers, but they also provide other direct help to students and their families. Also joining the staff is para-educator Nancy Auslander from Ronald McNair Elementary School in Germantown. Mrs. Auslander has experience in many situations, previously living in Italy and Switzerland. Back in the United States, she found her calling. Adds Ms. Auslander, I [began by] volunteering at my kids school and loved it, so... I made it my job. Sarah Goldsmith, who previously worked at Loiderman Middle School, is the new choral and music teacher. Building services and security also received some additions with James Vollmer to security and Josue Yraheta to building services.

Bengals celebrate Hispanic Heritage

Clubs strive to create awareness of Latino culture with food, art
x by Molly Cohen & Sarah Mansaray
To celebrate this years Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM), Blake has been hosting festivities in the amphitheater and will continue to do so through Friday. This month of festivities was created by the World Language Department, the Spanish Honors Society, Fuego Latino and the Hispanic Leadership Club as a way to introduce Spanish speaking culture to the Blake community. Says junior HLC member Sergio Polar, Its important to have the Blake community recognize the impact Hispanic culture has on society and to raise awareness and appreciation for Hispanic culture within our own Spanish-speaking community. So You Think You Can Latin Dance? is an event for dance enthusiasts and for those who just like to watch the performances alike. Participants will have the chance to compete in a selection of different styles of dance including bachata and merengue today in the amphitheater. Its a chance for students to show off their moves, adds foreign language resource teacher Monica Abuliak. HHM is a national celebration that was established in 1988. The official days of festivity are from September 15 to October 15. September 15 marks the anniversary of the independence of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. HHM marks not only the countries 1821 independences, but also the contributions that Hispanic and Latino Americans have made to the US. I think its great that we celebrate [HHM], says senior Carolina Camacho. To me it seems like Americans dont see much of [Hispanic] culture and they dont understand [it]. Upcoming events include the Fashion Show de las Amricas on Monday. Also scheduled to take place on Monday is face painting at the spiral staircase. Although HHM ends on October 15, Blake will mark its conclusion a day early on Friday with a fiesta. Polar adds, I really wanted to become a leader of the Spanish speaking community here at Blake and set a good example. Blakes HHM represents all 20 Spanishspeaking countries through music, food tastings, video clips and dances.

Montgomery Countys Pledge 25 encourages community volunteering

x by Aliya Dean & Hannah Kenney
County executive Ike Leggett urges residents to pledge 25 service hours during Montgomery Countys Community Service Week starting October 16 at Wheatons The World of Montgomery Festival and ending October 22 in Downtown Silver Spring. The goal is to engage 25,000 volunteers throughout the week. Volunteers can participate as individuals or they can bring family and friends, their office, neighborhood or congregation. When a group of friends does a community service activity together, they have more fun and do better work, says student service learning (SSL) coordinator Mary Wagner. During the week, there will be service projects and volunteer fairs to engage volunteers throughout Montgomery County. There is much to be done in [our] community, says sophomore Lillian Hallmark, and it doesnt take much to get it done. Many of these projects will provide students with the opportunity to earn SSL hours. Community service is not only required to graduate, adds junior class president Lydia Curdts, but it

New service initiative benefits general public

also provides a sense of self-worth and builds leadership skills. School communities can host projects. This could be anything from a clothing drive, school cleanup, to starting a mentoring program. [Community Service Week] is a great cause tobetter the community, discover what youre capable of, and contribute to society, says Hallmark. Volunteers can plan a project with the PTA, work with the principal, or work with student groups. There are a variety of options, adds Curdts. Students should specify them to their needs and interests, as well as the communitys. All project ideas, big or small, are encouraged as long as they are meeting needs in the community. We all should work together to help the community, says junior Kelly Stock. Examples of community work include: cleaning up

a local park or street, hosting a collection drive for a local nonprofit and volunteering with a new organization. If we have skills, talents, or just pure physical strength that can help someone else, adds Mrs. Wagner, then we have an obligation to do so. Additional goals of community service week are to increase the culture of serving and giving in the county, to engage new people in service and to recognize those who are already giving back to the community. When we help other people, other people will help us, says Mrs. Wagner. Residents can submit their project ideas and register to volunteer online. If students want to earn SSL hours for an activity, they must talk to their SSL coordinator. Students must have a signed pre-approval before participating in an activity. They will need to keep track of their hours and have their supervisor sign the verification form. Serving our community is an important part of life for residents in Montgomery County, Pledge 25 says on their website. Civic associations, businesses, schools and the government work together to make our county a wonderful place to work, live, serve, learn, grow, and play.

Fame Monster is unleashed in entertainment industry

x by David Hylton
When Lady Gagas album The Fame came out in August 2008, I became literally obsessed with this insanely famous woman. But now, towards the end of 2011, things are much different. A whole lot different. The once artist that I thought I fell in love with has now become a cocky hot-mess who is constantly craving attention. Because you see, its not that I dont like Lady Gagas music anymore: her personality just gets on all of my nerves (and yes, I mean all of them). First off, can she just be normal for once? I was all for her being unique in the beginning, but some things are just too much. Like showing up to an awards ceremony in an egg and hatching out of it before her performance. Was that really necessary? Another thing that I have found that majorly skewed my once-love for Lady Gaga is how she has overused the gay community. Alright, I get it, she loves them, she adores them, she wouldnt be here without them, but does she really have to relate everything to them? Adam Lambert is actually gay, yet he doesnt refer to the LGBT community as much as she does. Its almost as if she uses their minority appeal to boost her career. Lady Gaga, in my opinion, is a very fake person. Back when I was a fan, I saw her in concert. She wasnt like anything you see on TV nowadays. She wasnt rail thin, but instead she had a curvy figure. She didnt talk in an annoyingly high pitched voice (which for some reason she uses as an attempt to sound sophisticated), but instead a voice that you would expect to hear from any normal 24-yearold. That concert made me start to think that all of Lady Gagas strangeness was just an act, because the woman in the Fame Monster Ball Tour did not match the creature that gets interviewed dressed in all latex to promote safe-sex. In the end, I think all the fame that Lady Gaga has achieved has now all gone to her head. And its a shame, because I truly miss going gaga over Gaga.

Lady Gagas extreme ego, stunts overshadow her popular music

Classroom curriculum takes away pleasure, attraction of reading

x by Lucas Irvin
William Shakespeare and Nathaniel Hawthorne, along with many others, may have written some of the most famous works of literature in history, but they have ruined reading. To be fair, it isnt the writers themselves who have ruined it, but rather the curriculum through which we are introduced to them, taking what may have been a pleasurable experience into a laboriously analytical process. I used to spend a lot of my free time reading, simply enjoying a good story and taking my own personal message from it, but then came high school. I was no longer able to read a book through because I had to stop every few pages to annotate a passage or define a vocabulary word, thus breaking my attention and making it difficult to keep a continuous train of thought while reading. While I have enjoyed reading books such as The Old Man and the Sea and Brave New World, books that were assigned to me in high school, there has also been a fair share of dull, plotless books which I

Crazy girls constantly send text messages, clinginess scares senior

x by Isaac Appel
This summer was crazy, and not because of the parties which I didnt attendbut because of the fine females that just so happened to turn out to be crazy. Never in my life have I met a more persistent being than this girl who we shall name Topanga (Boy Meets World flashback anyone?). Despite the fact that I remained busy everyday, for three months, she continued the throw up of questions asking to hangout. Now why exactly did I always go to the busy excuse? Perhaps it was when she asked, or rather begged me to tell her shes perfect. Say Im perfect Isaac! I never said she was perfect, not one time, but Topanga was just oh so determined to get me to say it back. Say Im perfect Isaac! appeared in every text conversation, and soon to be in every nightmare. As soon as she would send that dreadful message, I stopped responding. Problem solved right? Wrong! The mass text messages of questions started coming in: why didnt I answer? Why am I ignoring her? Why havent we hung out?

have had the displeasure of being forced to read. Im talking about the sort of book that people never seem to appreciate for lack of anything actually happening. Books like One Writers Beginnings or The Awakening cause me (and others) to like reading less and less whenever I have to read such boring pieces of literature. Another major problem is overanalysis. The main book from English class that made me lose my taste for pleasure reading was The Catcher in the Rye. While I was reading it, I thought it was just the story of some whiny kid moving through his largely uneventful life, but then I was told of numerous symbols and hidden meanings. While this does show a great amount of reading talent, it is very frustrating to read a book and then essentially be told your entire perception of it is wrong. Changing classroom instruction from a teacher talking at students to open discussion would make this better. People could talk about what interests them, instead of being told how to think, helping pull pleasure reading back from the brink of its demise, and maybe even giving these notable authors a good reputation in our generation.

My mind couldnt handle this explosion of nonsense. I was thrust into Mariah Careys music video and singing, Why you so obsessed with me? As the nightmare ensued, Topanga turned into that crazy white chick Beyonce had to deal with in her movie Obsessed. I always wondered how such a pretty girl remained single for so long, and now I regretfully know why. Unfortunately the summer didnt end with just one crazy girl, one more was to follow. Senior Lulu shall be her name for this articles sake. Lulu took a different approach of craziness. She asked to be my prom date before school even started and I responded with Sureif I dont have a girlfriend by that time (With sarcasm pouring out). But her compassionate self, reassured me several times that I will have a girlfriend. Maybe it was her wink or the touch of her arm that scared me most, who knows. But I could tell she thought she was going to be my girlfriend. Moral of this story: be careful who you talk to because looks can be deceiving.

Small gestures, respect guarantee enormous rewards

x by Karen Vanegas
You hold a door for someone and you are not thanked. Someone drops something; you pick it up, you are not thanked. You say Hi to someone and all they can manage is a head nod. You wave to your so-called friend and they decide to look the other way. Everyday, the atmosphere at Blake is the same. I understand that it does not take a rocket scientist to know how different this generation is to everyone elses, but really? Can you be courteous for a minute of your life? What does it take to wave back? What does it take to stop and greet someone? Sure, I do not say hi to everyone I know in the hallways, but I definitely respect my elders. You should recognize the investment teachers are making in our education. So, why have the nerve to say my teacher doesnt like me when you are not even making an attempt to make his or her time here easier? And if you are one of the many looking towards a college education, always remember that it is those same teachers that you failed to greet who are whom you ask to write your recommendation letter. Chances are pretty slim that they will write a decent, personalized letter; prepare yourself to receive another cookie-cutter recommendation. If you simply take a second out of your life and reflect on your actions, you will realize that by being amiable, your entire life will be completely transformed. It is the small things in life that really count and a simple grin can turn someones day around. Who knows? Maybe a small gesture will help put back the pieces to a broken friendship. Perhaps a kind smile will be the start of a friendship. A simple handshake could lead you to a potential job or internship. It is your duty to preserve the superior qualities from the olden days. I know what you are thinking, but no, its not oldfashioned; it is only a matter of courtesy that must transcend all age boundaries. I guess what I am really trying to say here is that being polite will not kill you, let alone hurt you. It will not damage your image; it will not cause you to lose your friend. It simply will not have a negative impact on you. Next time you see a long-lost acquaintance or a stranger, go the extra mile and be well-mannered. Trust me. It will pay off, somehow, someway.

Lack of manners among students spreads like wildfire, annoys others

Twitter plays hashtag with rest of social networks, invades news feeds
x by Rachel Jaffe

Spreading phenomenon makes senior want to end Internet trending

In case youre unclear about this, the use of hashtags on Facebook and in texts does absolutely nothing.
As if the 140-character-or-less phenomenon thats taking over the lives of social networkers everywhere is not annoying enough on its own, us non-tweeters now have to watch as the epic hashtags take over Facebook and texting as well. I have no problem with Twitter. While I personally dont choose to tweet, the ability to quickly stalk peoples lives secondby-second is appealing. And being able to feel up close and personal with your favorite celeb isnt a bad thing either. To be fair, I do understand the purpose of hashtags on Twitter. The convenience and organization that they allow is very appropriate for Twitters on-the-go spirit. However, in case youre unclear about this, the use of hashtags on Facebook and in texts does absolutely nothing. Nothing trends on Facebook. I cant click on your words in a text to go look at 1,000 other related texts. And most importantly, you appear to be highly confused by your different social networking devices because you are getting their features mixed up. To be honest, the things that you are hashtagging normally are no more important than any of the surrounding words or any other phrase you say for that matter. The fact that you actually think that its important is probably the most annoying part about it. Were already going to see what you put on Facebook. And Twitter. And in that text message. So why do you need the extra pizzazz? Im beginning to think that the excessive hashtag usage comes from a lack of self-esteem. Maybe people are really so concerned that nobody will bother to look at what they have to say that they have to add a hashtag to make it seem like it matters. Or maybe its in desperation to be a part of something bigger. I mean if everyone else wants to #savethewhales or watch #gossipgirl, then shouldnt you want to also? Be part of a trend, its so much cooler than being independent and unique. As the bandwagon continues, hashtagging spreads and take over anywhere and everywhere possible. Im anticipating the day that Ill hear someone speaking in hashtags or perhaps everything we do or say will be condensed into short Twitter phrases. But really, the next time you go to update your Facebook status or make your new profile pictures caption, consider whether or not it means more to say #omgmybff or OMG my BFF. In the future, just #saveitfortwitter.

Controversy over Davis execution causes outrage for many

Racial tensions, judiciary system collide as major case impassions senior
x by Vanessa Newman
What would it take for you to end someones life? How heinous would a crime have to be to put someone to death for it? How sure would you have to be to make such a decision? Well, the state of Georgia seemed sure enough to execute 42 year old Troy Davis, after sitting on death row for 20 years, for the possible, but not proven, murder of a police officer back in 1989. Let me be frank - each and every death penalty sentence and execution outrages me. The fact that we really believe we should condemn the act of murder with murder is madness. I mean, doesnt anyone remember the saying, An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind? Clearly, the justice system has already developed a blind eye for recognizing what innocence looks like. First off, Mr. Davis was convicted under circumstantial evidence. He was put to death with no DNA evidence to his case. Im sorry, but I dont remember when witness accounts were enough to inject a lethal substance into ones arm. Besides, how credible were these sources anyways? Seven of the nine prosecution witnesses had altered their stories and/or admitted to being coerced by the police into identifying Mr. Davis as the shooter. One witness was illiterate. In the 2010 federal trial, he could not even read his own original statement from 1989. But if the witnesses declared him guilty at one point, go with the initial instinct, right? Wrong. In fact, Mr. Daviss execution was postponed three different times. So, if there was enough doubt to put off killing him the first time, the second time and the third time, at what point did all this doubt vanish before executing him? Its clear that doubt never vanished. From rallies and protests to breaking news stories and fiery opinion columns blowing up the media, it was obvious to many eyes; this was not a surely solved case. Mr. Davis himself held his innocence to his very last words before put to death. Im just going to say it. Casey Anthony, a young white woman who many still suspect killed her daughter, can walk because of a reasonable doubt with no hard evidence, but a black man will be put to death under the same type of situation. Wow, we really are going blind, America.

Potter fans rejoice: Hogwarts always there to welcome you home

by Alexandra Reeves x & Melissa Whitaker

Beloved series will remain immortal in hearts of dedicated readers

After spending 14 years immersed in the world of Harry Potter, we spent this past summer crying Galleon sized tears mourning the death of our lifelong obsession. Just the thought of losing it devastated us. In the movie, when Severus Snape died, that huge beating lump in our chests, which some people call a heart, plummeted to the pit of our stomachs. We were frozen with grief. Even though we had read the books and knew what was going to happen, it was still a huge hit, the Potions Master, like the woman he lived for, was gone. Though the image of an inflamed Hogwarts - our childhood safe haven - will be permanently imprinted in our brains, we must inform the distraught fans that Harry Potter is not over. Like the Golden Snitch told Harry, It opens at the close. With exciting new adventures, such as The imagination. You get a personalized wand and you are placed in one of the four houses at Hogwarts (Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin). In each chapter you can collect items for your trunk, unlock

The world is not going to let Harry Potter disappear under the Invisibility Cloak.
Wizarding World of Harry Potter park and Pottermore, a new internet adventure, the world is not going to let Harry Potter disappear under the Invisibility Cloak. With the release of Pottermore, fans are able to dive right into J.K. Rowlings new information about Harrys world and find out about the creatures within it. Unfortunately, not everyone agrees with these additions; some fans believe that these new installments are too much. To those people we say this: all these extras

were written and approved by Rowling and if its good enough for the creator, its good enough for us. The most devoted Potterheads know there is an entire genre of music inspired by the Potter phenomena called Wizard Rock; where fans of the books write songs about events in the series. Our personal favorite is Oliver Boyd and the Rememberalls. But we cannot tell lies: when our grieving was at its worst the song End of an Era did wonders. Harry James Potter was more than just a character in a book: he was friend, a hero, a symbol that things could get better. In the words of Rowling: Whether you come back by page, or the big screen, Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home.

Few new features, same old series: new editions not worth price
Students ripped off trying to stay up-to-date with constant game releases
x by Ghulam-Nabi Sallman
New sports video games, such as Madden NFL and FIFA Soccer are released at the end of each year, attracting gamers with a new and refreshed game cover and updated graphics. But with the high prices and frequency of release, Im starting to think its not worth purchasing the new versions. Madden NFL 12 was released August 30 with a new game screen layout and custom playbooks. Alarger change for Madden 12 was the new player collisions engine that gives the gamer more control of how tackles are carried out. Of course there are always basic modifications that are made in the new versions, like the menus and background, but the biggest change that designers have made is the rosters that affect the overall rating of the team. Under all of the small changes made to the crowd and the celebrations of the players, you are still playing the same exact video game as the year before. This is also true for other video game series. Isnt Mario always on a mission to save Peach? Yet, people still give in to buying a new version of the same Mario storyline. And isnt the point of every Call of Duty game the same: to kill each other? The new additions to the same storyline are what attract gamers back to buy a new copy. Even with only minor changes, people still go out and spend another $60 every year for the latest version. Its as if people get caught in a cycle that never ends. Sports fans want to enjoy playing Madden with the same roster as their favorite NFL team that current season. Gamers dont want to be stuck in the past with old retired players. But even with the new graphics and designs, its really not worth $60. When I look for a new game, I look for something that will keep me occupied for a long period of time. While 60 bucks is not going to break the bank, I still dont want to waste it on a game that I will lose interest in a month later. However, with the different game play modes in Madden, such as franchise and superstar mode, I think I can stay hooked for a sufficient amount of time. I still get tired of facing the same upgrades and the same price every year. small updates to the previous games should be made for a reasonable $20 to $30 every year and a whole new disc version with major updates should be released every few years, minimizing manufacturing and consumer costs. The reality of it all is that EA Sports could definitely do it better, yet they still dont. As long as 90% of people that bought the game the year before buy it again this year, the sports gaming industry will continue to be monopolized.

Under all of the small changes....you are still playing the same exact video game.

Kids lose haven as budget cuts endanger public libraries

Senior encourages students to speak out against Montgomery County
x by Danielle Moore
As public libraries rummage through the fierce jungles of budget cuts, theyre in a fight for their lives. Suffering scars and bruises from lost money, only survival of the fittest gets new books on their shelves. Our public libraries have become a safe place to do research, check out a book, meet with your tutor, access the internet or do your homework. However, all of that may be in danger due to the recent cuts. Montgomery County Public Libraries are doing everything they can to keep out of the danger zone, but as citizens who care about our public libraries we need to get involved. No More Cuts has become the motto of this movement. Since the beginning of time (or their first existence), libraries have been a safe community center in which people can not only learn, but also stay abreast of current technology. Even now, whether youre looking to download a new book onto your Kindle, or use the Internet to fill out job applications in these stressful economic times, the library has stayed on top of the growing and changing technological demand. Libraries mold lifelong educated readers and are a favorite place for the young and old. However, if budget cuts proceed there is no guarantee that youll see the current Harry Potter book available for checkout at your local library or even at a library remotely close to you. When summer reading creeps up on you at the last minute next summer, you should have a backup plan on how to get your books because at this rate, you wont find them at the library. As students, we often underestimate the power of our opinions. This is a time for you to exercise those vocal chords and speak up about saving the libraries you love. There are numerous ways to get involved. You can send a letter to your county council member or donate to Friends of the Library - a nonprofit that focuses on preventing the death of our sacred libraries. Despite the avenue through which you choose to vocalize your beliefs, its just important that you do. Dont be left wondering where your favorite library is when you couldve done something to help.

Talk about an awkward life stage: high school meets Jenna Hamilton
MTVs new TV series stands out among other teenage-based shows
x by Priya Dadlani
Hot older crushes, sneaky Regina Georges, longing for social hierarchy and facing hypocrisies of the adult world are all the main factors that make up your everyday teen television series. Well, MTVs new hit show Awkward covers all those bases and then some. Revolving around 15 year old Jenna Hamilton, played by Ashley Rickards, this series offers a different take on life as a teenage girl. Hamilton is the smart, cute, sensitive and slightly dorky heroine who wants nothing more than the golden ticket to social visibility at her high school. To me, this series tops all other teen shows like the short lived Skins and the popular The Secret Life of the American Teenager series. While these shows were more provocative and one dimensional, Awkward offers an uncut, comic relief similar to the protagonist in the movie Juno. Personally, I think Hamilton is an extremely relatable character. Yes, shes faced with the normal everyday challenges of a teen girl, but its the way that she responds to them that fascinates me. Her blog titled Invisible Girl is where she ruminates over her poor self-image and daily run-ins with high school drama. Most of her problems revolve around her older crush Matty McKibben who has taken a little more than her heart from her. Never shedding tears, Hamilton always finds a way to make her viewers laugh. This is an admirable trait of which many teenagers should take note. Apart from the common teenage taboos like pregnancy and drug abuse, Awkward focuses more on the everyday teen trials. Events like having the queen bee in school spread a rumor about you, or having your dream guy hold eye contact for more than three seconds are the types of things Hamilton dwells on. I dont usually watch television but this show definitely caught my attention. Instead of watching repetitive shows about partying guidos and teen moms, Id rather watch a series that shows the real way things play out. When your dream guy tells you that he just wants to be friends, he never really shows up at your house at 12 am throwing pebbles at your window with flowers and a box of heart shaped chocolates. Awkward shows that life goes on and you may just be moping around for a few weeks, avoiding his glances and stalking his Facebook, before you realize that maybe it is not the end of the world. These occurrences are more relatable to me than the usual television teenage drama depicted in most teenage-based shows. Instead, Awkward is a wry series encompassing all of the ups and downs of any old teenager, but with triple the punch lines.

Instead of watching repetitive shows about partying guidos and teen moms, Id rather watch a [real] series.

Rap lyrics turn off many, encourage hate, discrimination

Junior speaks out against slurs, encourages Bengals to filter language
x by Emily Eaglin
Everyone remembers the groundbreaking episode of Oprah when Oprah Winfrey brought up what morally separates her and her guest Jay-Z: the N-word. According to Jay-Z the N-Word is now a term of endearment. Oprah then says, I think about the black men who were lynched and that was the last word they heard. The argument ends with them agreeing to disagree. The fact is if you are in high school and actually care about racial issues, you are either on Team Oprah or Team Jay-Z. I personally cannot stand the N-word. It is severely overused and a lot of people use it purely due to their ignorance of the past while degrading their ethnicity especially rappers. I understand rappers use realism, but

being unrealistically negative is just obnoxious. The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) community has drawn attention to recent MTV Video Music Awards winner Tyler the Creator, who used a certain homophobic F slur 213 times in just one album. I think he could have gotten his point across without having to put people down. Can heterosexuals use the homophobic F slur? Can non-blacks use the N-word? Successful and smart rappers like Kreayshawn, Eminem and old school rappers like Will Smith admirably choose not to use the slurs in their songs. So here is some advice to some aspiring rappers: your content should be inspired by love and creativity of your craft not by negativity for reactions. And to the rest of you reading this who use the N-word, try to think about what would happen if you used this word face to face with your ancestors. You prob-

ably wouldnt be able to say it to their faces because you know its wrong and you know its hurtful, so you shouldnt say it at all. And it doesnt matter if you dont find it derogatory, what matters is what other people who hear it think about you as a person. I think about how uneducated you are on the topic. And if your great grandmother heard you say the N-word, you know she wouldnt be happy. She wouldnt be proud of you for succeeding in degrading your own race and culture. I am not as offended by the N-word as I am utterly confused by its sole existence. If you want to use degrading language, then you have the freedom to do so. But if you actually took a second to think of all of the people who fought for your rights, and how that word is so full of hatred, you probably wouldnt use derogatory language ever again.

Change of seasons brings change of fashion, new trends set for fall
Senior sheds light on fashion options, shows creativity through clothes
xby Johnelle Revell
Everyone likes the change of seasons for at least one reason: the pool, the changing leaves, the snow, the warmth. For me, the most exciting thing about the changing of seasons is the new fashion options. Scarves and boots replace shorts and sandals - I couldnt be more excited to break out my sweaters. Fashion is a big deal to me. The most glorifying day in a childs life, aside from the noticeable events like birthdays or first days of school, is the day parents allow their child to pick out his or her own outfit. It opens a whole new world of independence and creativity. It allows a child to begin the process of generating his or her own identity. With such responsibility comes the regulations of how to match, when to wear particular clothes and when not to wear certain colors. All fashion rules have an explanation, of course, but that doesnt mean I follow them. Society sets standards for fashion. For example, it is improper to wear white after Labor Day simply because it is considered tacky. Light colors are acceptable in the spring and summer. Short sleeves and shorts are not suitable for winter because the weather is too cold. Flip flops retire their wear around September, and it is just ridiculous to continue wearing them beyond a certain point. And then there is the most annoying rule of all: the boot boundary, which says boots are supposedly a fall/winter thing. Honestly, if a person feels great and looks spectacular, it really does not matter what the person is wearing and when the person is wearing it. To get around the shorts rule, wear stockings underneath. Short sleeves can be worn whenever, and when the harsh winter prompts long sleeves to appear, add a stylish jacket to layer over. It makes no difference when boots are worn; if worn correctly they can be a trend setter. Shorts and low cut boots make an excellent outfit, in a fashionable divas eye. More importantly, white can be worn whenever a person pleases. Nowadays, the fashion world will not criticize someone for stepping out of their comfort zone and showing off his or her personal style. And if someone decides to question the ensemble, consider it a winter white. The only thing that will always and forever be tacky is wearing white pants - that is just a very big no-no. Just because the weather changes does not mean the styles have to. Being a trend setter involves breaking a few fashion rules. The more seasonal fashion rules broken, the trendier the outfit.

Three-dimensional films used to mean getting flimsy paper glasses and fun action-filled movies, but now they are associated with expensive tickets and less than adequate effects. So far, 30 movies have come out this year with a 3-D option and there are more to come. Video games and television shows are jumping on the bandwagon as well. But 3-D has evolved; the red and blue glasses are no more. Exclamations from the audience when the effects have done their jobs have ceased. It used to be fun to see a movie in 3-D because you knew that something would be thrown into the audience. But now, with every movie having the option, they have become boring. The newest Transformers movie was so fuzzy I could barely understand what was happening. Movie choices have been less than amazing recently. This year has spewed out a Justin Bieber movie and countless remakes, sequels and movies based off of comic books. These movies will not be considered classics. I feel movie executives are using 3-D as a gimmick to make bad movies viewable and to get more money. Older movies, like The Lion King and Titanic, are even being re-released in 3-D in order to get a buck. I am not advocating for 3-D films to disappear. They can be fun, mindless entertainment. But if these movies intend to stay around, changes need to be made. No more Ray-Ban glasses; I want the red and blue glasses back. They were fun to wear and added to the experience. No more sloppy effects, either. The screen should be popping out into the audience, otherwise what is the point? Of course, people have the option to choose not to see the movie in 3-D. But shouldnt movie producers present us with quality entertainment? If you give us an option for 3-D it should add to the movies visual effects, not distract from them. Give me a good movie and great effects and I will be satisfied, but please no more The Smurfs in 3-D. It is just embarrassing.

The most exciting thing about the changing of seasons is the new fashion options.

Monument celebrates activists legacy for change, invokes peace

As you walk through the parted stone opening, you are not just walking into a memorial for a man who stood for justice, righteousness and peace; you are entering an area of simplicity, serenity and tranquility. Tucked between the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, behind the Washington Monument and overlooking the Tidal Basin, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial creates a peaceful atmosphere, encompassing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.s non-violent beliefs into a single space. US history and government teacher Tiferet Ani says, I like how the monument is an allegory constructed around the phrase through the mountain of despair, a stone of hope. The monument itself is composed of the giant stone carving of Dr. King, surrounded by a 450 foot wide wall inscribed with some of the most significant quotes spoken by the late Dr. King. The quotes were from speeches given around the world, making it clear he had a goal to spread a message of peace to the entire globe. Reading the quotes made me feel inspired to be better than average, says junior Aryn Frazier, and that I should uphold the traditions and values that [African Americans] had in mind when struggling to secure our futures. Some believe that Dr. Kings quotes were used in the wrong context. Author and poet Maya Angelou was displeased with the use of the quote I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness. Ms. Angelou believes this out-of-context quote made Dr. King come off as arrogant and narcissistic. Government and African American history teacher, Dustin Jeter realizes the possible misquotation but does not feel its use takes away from the memorials significance. The reputation of Dr. King is so well known that the quotation will not damage it, says Mr. Jeter. Aside from the misquotation controversy, another minor misfortune was the arrival of Hurricane Irene, delaying the grand dedication of the memorial. However, the service has now been rescheduled to October 16. Frazier says, I would recommend that my friends go see it because its definitely a piece of history, and [the quotes] touch people decades after they have been spoken. The hard work and dedication Dr. King put in to promote peace and equality is still significant and present today, and there was an equal amount of hard work and dedication put into his memorial to ensure his dream is not to be forgotten. It is the first monument in DC that commemorates a non-white individual who wasnt a president or war hero, adds Ms. Ani. Vistors are captivated by the beauty and power of the Its about time that such a monument existed. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial that has recently

Seniors stress over special dress, strut their stuff at memorable night
by Sammi Levitt x & Savannah Tryens
As everyones favorite week approaches, the fashionistas, the hipsters and everyone in between come out of hibernation to strut their stuff for the fall Olympics of fashion: Homecoming. We all love a good little black dress, and for other schools that may be appropriate, but this is Blake, and when it comes to style we mean business. For all you freshmen, dont be surprised to see a neon spandex dress inspired by Cyndi Lauper, only to turn around and see a corseted, Marie Antoinette ball gown. To simply put it, our student body is unique and our dresses will be too. As her final Homecoming steadily approaches, senior Hayley Glantz plans to go out with a bang. Every year I played it safe because I didnt want to stand out as an underclassman, says Glantz. But Im a senior this year so all rules are off and Im going to wear whatever I want. Glantz, who hopes to find a sequined dress, has already purchased many options online. For other students, social media has allowed them to take the hunt for the perfect dress to a whole new level. Senior Melissa McNabb and her friends have a Facebook thread going, in which they post dresses they find online and comment on whether they like them or not. Although this use of social media might sound a bit strange, McNabb believes it has many benefits. You dont want to go to homecoming with a dress all your friends hate, says McNabb. This way you can prepare an approved list and know exactly what youre looking for when its time to go to the mall. No girl can honestly say that she hasnt spent hours on Facebook the day after homecoming to stalk other peoples photos and anxiously wait for members of her own group to post potential new profile pictures. The dress is important because all those Facebook stalkers out there are bound to see it. Of course Forever 21 will be a popular hot spot for many girls looking to buy an affordable dress that is still stylish. All the hipster girls know that American Apparel has dresses for girls that are willing to expand their budgets a little more and show a little bit more skin (less dress for more money, sounds fair, right?). Finally you have your big spender stores like Nordstrom and Bebe that have chic dresses (though you could probably buy knockoffs at Forever 21 for half the price). The perfect homecoming dress is no joke. Frankly, it can make you or break you in the competitive world of Blake fashion. Says McNabb,I know my dress will make a statement and show my hidden fashionista.

Hipster movement floods Blake hallways with trendy apparel

New fashion styles take over one oversized sweater at a time
x by Molly Cohen & David Hylton
Abercombie. American Eagle. Hollister. All of these are typical brands worn by high school students. But as the hipster movement has been spreading at Blake, Bengals have been changing the typical style. The statement youre such a hipster has been growing the past few years, yet when asked what a hipster actually is everyone seems to have trouble defining it. I would define a hipster as someone who dresses out of the norm, says junior Tara Adhatamsoontra.,someone who is [not] mainstream and doesnt dress out of a magazine or have all their clothes from name brands. Many students use this to build up their own personal style in a way that is different than everybody elses. Senior Kathryn Evans says, The hipster style is infinitely creative. Its very personal and very expressive - you can have so much fun with layers and colors and patterns. Most individuals who classify themselves as hipsters normally shop at thrift stores instead of the typical brand stores in order to find clothing that suits their style. [Thrift stores are] the perfect place to get quirky and sometimes vintage, if Im lucky clothes that are also very inexpensive, says Evans. But to fully understand the concept of hipster, one has to know the history. Hipsters were first a group of liberal environmentalists in the lower boroughs of New York City who did not agree with the rules of mainstream society. Being hipster [is not just a style, but] also a mentality, says Adhatamsoontra. You are interested in arts and are usually well spoken and open minded. However, some people just believe buying trendy clothes or shopping at a thrift store means you are a hipster, which leaves some individuals inaccurately labeled. Since I dress like a hipster, people automatically think Im this calm, stylish hipster, when in reality Im nothing like that, says junior Becca Schwartz. It puts a label on me and I dont like that. With the non-mainstream hipsters seeming to become the new mainstream, there is no telling what the next effort to break from the mainstream will be like. Says Evans, Its so easy to fall into the pattern and monotony of everyday life and it allows people to break out of the dress code and explore.

Senior discovers new way of life within Tibetan culture, religion

by Emily Simmons x & Michael Joiner
After journeying halfway around the world and completely transforming her morals and beliefs, senior Meredith Mathis has found something that not many people find in their lifetime: happiness. When Mathis received the book Essential Writings by Tcich Nhat Hanh from former history teacher Brian Oliver, she had no idea how it would impact her life. The book taught her the basics of Buddhism. I see Buddhism as a way that I can stay happy, says Mathis. It has helped me evolve into the person I want to be. Mathis has been studying and following Buddhist beliefs for almost two years, and they have significantly changed her lifestyle. She is now a vegetarian and meditates daily two things she believes are extremely important to her practices of Buddhism. What began as a small curiosity has now expanded into a standard of living. Sometimes I just have little interests that manifest, says Mathis, and [Buddhism] was one of those little things that I wanted to look into. This past summer Mathis and her family traveled to Tibet after looking through a National Geographic magazine and reading about Tibetan Buddhism and the progressive extinction of the culture. Mathis family visited the capital Lhasa, as well as a few prominent monasteries. My perception of the world has changed, says Mathis. I learned more about their culture than I did about their religion. Mathis mother, Lisa Neatherly, has been an important figure in Mathis rediscovery of herself through Buddhism. I am a Christian, says Neatherly, but I dont think Buddhism is wrong. Neatherly, who has been a vegetarian on and off her whole life, supports her daughter, and has even stopped eating meat. I didnt understand at first why she was Buddhist, says

senior Courtney Cristaldi, one of Mathis close friends. It was difficult for her and her friends at first when deciding where they would go out to eat. I respect her for it, adds Cristaldi, and I respect her wishes. I hope Meredith takes what she has learned and seen and tries to do good in the world, says Mrs. Neatherly. And I hope that her belief in Buddhism and [her] trip to Tibet have inspired her to keep trying to change the world.

I hope Meredith takes what she has learned and seen and tries to do good in the world.

Innumerable tickets won from weekly D&B tradition

Most teenagers spend their Wednesday nights at home doing their homework, eating dinner with momma and watching their favorite reruns on television, but this is not the case for senior Matt Lipshultz and his friends. Lipshultz goes almost every Wednesday to Dave & Busters (or D&B if youre an experienced buster) for the half-price games and his own after prom party. He doesnt win a lame stuffed animal; he goes for the top prizes. He recently won an iPad 2 and won an Xbox 360 a few years ago. If that is not jaw dropping enough, he hits the jackpot on his favorite game about half the time. But tickets and prizes are not everything to him. Says Lipshultz, Enjoying myself and hanging out with friends is the best part, the prizes are just a nice addition to that. Lipshultz used to go with his brother, Evan, until Evan went to college; now he goes with any friends that are free that week. Senior Anthony Bui, one of his friends, adds, Im happy for him, and hope that he enjoys the fruits of his labor thoroughly. Lipshultz started making D&B memories as young as the age of ten, but has only recently started going almost every week because of lifes stresses. Lipshultz says, D&B is my escape from the stresses of school and applying to college. Some may think Lipshultz is just lucky, but Bui disagrees. The fact he amassed over 100,000 tickets from such a game should be indicative of manual deftness, adds Bui. I believe Matt is gifted, rather than lucky. Now that Lipshultz has conquered the games and won the most expensive prize D&B offers the iPad 2 worth 120,000 tickets- his once oasis getaway is now turning into something a little less fun. Lipshultz says, Now its sort of a letdown knowing I cant win anything better. Lipshultz is considered a regular by the D&B crew and the workers know his name and he knows some of theirs. He does not mess around when high staking items are involved; he acts like a professional and gets the job done. Well, I dont think he was goofing off if he had won a [five] hundred dollar item, adds Bui. It seemed more like business Senior Matt Lipshultz enjoys his tickets after to him. winning at Dave and Busters. His dedication to going

Students conquer stereotypes while loving their red hair, individuality
xby Jake Gordon
All men are created equal, even gingers. And due to the lack of appreciation and awareness about the ginger epidemic, redheads have taken the initiative to speak up and entertain popular stereotypes. While most students are not offended by the word ginger and throw the term around loosely, it is important to remember that it was once a derogatory phrase meant to make fun of those with red hair. However, students like junior redhead Matt Krieger accept the nickname, finding no malice in its current usage. I used to think of it as offensive, but its become so everyday and common for me, says Krieger. Its somewhat endearing. South Park, an animated television comedy, aired an episode in 2005 joking that those with red hair have a gingervitis disease, are unable to survive in sunlight and have no soul. These jokes are still known to many teenagers, but their relevance and impact are fading. The word has basically lost all its meaning, says senior Matt Lipshultz of the formerly offensive term. I dont think of myself as anything lower. It doesnt bother me now. Instead of walking the hallways feeling uncomfortable and outnumbered, most redheaded Bengals are proud of their hair and are never bothered by it. Says senior Colleen Livingstone, I like it. Whats not to like about it? I have never found the word ginger offensive; no one has ever tried to insult me with it. Although she remembers being teased frequently as a kid in lower grade schools, English teacher Elizabeth Jones embraces her red hair in adulthood. My grandmother always told me [my red hair] was my crown of glory and I feel it makes me stand out from the crowd, says Mrs. Jones. Pretty much everyone in my family has some shade of red hair, so Id feel a little left out without it. Junior Emily Greitzer sees absolutely no hint of meanness in the word ginger. Its just a word that describes a redhead, its not negative, says Greitzer. [Being a redhead] is cool - youre an individual. Mrs. Jones adds, Im sure people dont use the word to degrade others now, but I think its important to know where words come from. She believes the term ginger earned its hateful connotation in England because the English spent centuries oppressing the English and Scottish. The term ginger is becoming increasingly accepted, and it should be understood that redheads are normal people too, well equipped with souls and pocket sun screen so they too can tackle the outdoors.

[Being a redhead] is coolyoure an indivdual.

Whats in the sky? Its a bird, its a plane, no, its my English teacher
by x Ellen Wood & Emily Caulfield
Ever thought that your teacher would be flying a Sesna 150 over 6,000 feet of unique terrain in Olympia, Washington? For students that have James Gifford, English teacher and new yearbook coordinator, this is a reality. Mr. Giffords interest stemmed from his older brother, Bill Gifford, who was a pilot in the United States Air Force and got his pilot license before he learned how to drive a car; his other brother was a pilot in the navy. Coming from a long line of pilots, he decided to give it a try. I learned to love flying, but the military route wasnt for me, says Mr. Gifford. Id just fly for fun. In the 1990s, Mr. Gifford was lured to move to Olympia, Washington for his

wifes new job, where he then had an opportunity to fly. His wife has always been wary of him flying, due to the dangers that come with the hobby. You could end up very dead, in a crumpled ball of aluminum, says Mr. Gifford. While flying, nearly every pilot will have an experience where they will be fearful while they are in the air. Mr. Gifford, training for his basic pilots license, was caught in his most terrifying experience during a storm, where he could see the lightning at the end of

the runway. It wasnt easy receiving his pilot license, which he earned in 1998. Whenever he went into the air with his instructor, he would feel sick from repeatedly going in circles. Says Mr. Gifford, An airliner is like being on a cruise ship, a little airplane is like a canoe- you can feel all the ripples in the air. He suggests that everybody should have the experience of flying in a small plane -- even if air sickness is a problem -- because its still a fun experience.

Although Mr. Gifford hasnt flown in years, he will continue to fly when he retires. Mr. Gifford points out that its hard to fly now that he lives in the DC area, because of September 11. However, he will be getting back up in the air sometime this fall to give his son flying lessons for his 17th birthday. Mr. Gifford became interested in flying as a teenager, and his son is following in his footsteps as he followed in his older brothers footsteps. I encourage everyone to get their pilot license, says Mr. Gifford. Despite the unavoidable hazards of flying, Mr. Gifford could never give up his passion for the thrill of the flight. No matter what age he reaches, this teacher will always have one infatuation: soaring through the sky.

A little airplane is like a canoe - you can feel all the ripples in the air.

Gay Republican goes against stereotypes as he advocates his political platform

Senior uses social media to advocate ideology while challenging most public presumptions
x by Niki Byrd & Samara Tu
Those of you planning to vote in the 2048 election, mark your ballots now for senior Malcolm Jenkins, an African American gay Republican who defies all expectations. Jenkins, a living oxymoron, enjoys baffling others with his standings as people find it hard to believe that such a person as Jenkins exists. However, hes not doing it for the attention. Every day I feel like a huge rebel, but Im not rebelling on purpose, says Jenkins. Society just thinks I should vote a certain way because of who I am, but thats not how ideology works. In the hallways, you can see Jenkins in a heated debate with senior Rhea Wyse, a Democrat. Even though these two refuse to be swayed by each others arguments, their friendship is still strong. Says Wyse, Our differences seem to bring us together in a way and we simply agree to disagree. The fact that he is gay does not interfere with his Republican standpoint, as his political and religious principles come first over his sexual orientation. Though Im gay and would never deny it, I do not support gay marriage in the church, says Jenkins. If gays want to go in front of a judge, and get a civil union or marry in a legal and nonreligious way, [then] thats okay. He believes that marriage is between a man and a woman, and that it would be disrespectful for him to get married and expect God to approve the marriage. Earlier in the year, he founded a political website (www.theoutspokenteen. wordpress.com) for a class project, but it turned into an outlet for him to express his position on issues. Using Twitter as well, Jenkins voices his own commentary on what the Obama administration has done. He hopes his website will help teenagers get a new perspective on our nations politics. Not only does he write about his viewpoints, he also gets involved in the political community. As Blake SGA vice president, vice president of the Montgomery County Region SGA and an executive staff member of the Maryland Association of Student Councils, Jenkins actively speaks out for the students. Says Jenkins, Representing the students of Montgomery County is something that makes me happy because I know that most kids feel ambushed when there are new rules and policies they dont like. Defying stereotypes isnt what Jenkins only hopes to do. He has higher hopes to become the first African-American, gay Republican president.

Hookah trend blinds some teenagers to inevitable, destructive reality

by Hayley Fixler x & Lucas Irvin
Strawberry, mint chocolate chill and tropical mango may sound like ice cream flavors, but they are flavors of hookah, a popular tobacco product which entices people to get in groups and engulf themselves in puffs of aromatic smoke. Many people think that hookah, AKA shisha, is a safe alternative to cigarettes. But health teacher Litonya Livingston thinks otherwise. Doing any drug is like Russian roulette, says Ms. Livingston. A lifelong smoker can get very few ill effects while someone else can die from smoking hookah a few times. Though hookah is illegal for anyone under 18 to smoke, many teenagers can access it rather easily, from someone who owns a water pipe, or from a hookah bar, many of which do not ask for an ID. However, not everyone enjoys smoking hookah, because, as sePart of the reason it has become so popular may be a result of the fact that it is hardly taboo. Calling becomes thing of the past: teens favor messaging

Texting generation doesnt share boomers taste for talking on phone
xby Dorian Purse & Michelle Ung
Texting has overtaken the lives of teenagers. We are barely seen without the company of our cell phones, texting so much that our thumbs begin to hurt and we start talking in text language. Texting to me is a way of fast communication, says junior Julia Stewart. Texting is a popular activity that has captivated teenagers and even some adults. Conversations can now be held discreetly without other people knowing that you are communicating with someone else. When you send a text message, recipients can reply at their convenience. Questions asked over the phone compel people to give an immediate response, which is often not the most appropriate, accurate or thoughtful answer. The time spent thinking about a question can allow someone to give a much better reply. With hectic schedules, texting has become convenient with fitting a social life between all activities and also being able to hold more than one conversation at the same time. I text because most of the time Im busy doing something, says junior Konner Johnson. Texting has become a great tool for some, but other students believe it distracts from their school work. Johnson adds, Texting sometimes gets me off task from my studies. It has become extremely hard to put the phone down for a couple of hours to study, for the simple reason that once a text message is received, there is an urge to answer immediately. Parents often ask their kids not to text because it may affect their childs performance in school, but most kids know the benefits of texting can sometimes be greater than the detriments. I sometimes text people in my classes to see if we had any homework, says junior Anjelica Grant. It is easier than starting a full conversation to get one answer. On the other hand, texting also has negative effects, including how students and adults drive. It is a leading cause of teenage car accidents. I think its stupid. Texting while driving is really dangerous, says senior Paula Edoja. The percentage of texting while driving has increased in the past years due to the growing phenomenon. I see people, when Im driving, texting at stoplights, adds Edoja. Boundaries need to be set to show that there is a time and a place for texting. Usually if someone wants to have a conversation that is either social or open-ended in nature, they will pick up the phone and call. But as long as texting continues to build up its popularity, phone calls will continue to be scarce.

Head of security gives insight on dealing with students successfully

x by Hayley Fixler & Leah Patterson
Most faculty members cannot say they have worked long hours, 365 days a year at a juvenile detention center, but security team leader Charles Harper did just that for twenty years. Mr. Harper came to Blake as a security assistant in 2000, after twenty years of working in the Department of Juvenile Detention Services. One teenager detained at the center taught Mr. Harper about how to deal with teenagers and people in general. If you approach a young adult respectfully, they will respond respectfully, says Mr. Harper. He then changed his approach in dealing with the delinquents and ceased to use verbal abuse, unlike his peers. There was a lot of sadness. [Blake] is a much different world, Mr. Harper says. Even on holidays, Mr. Harper would have to work all day to sort out various incidents, including assaults. He does not regret his time spent working with juvenile delinquents in fact, he owes much of his success to the young adults there who taught him so much. Mr. Harper acknowledges that he misses certain aspects of working at the detention center. Sometimes I do [miss it], because whenever you had a victory there it was very rewarding, Mr. Harper says. He had more one-on-one interactions and counseling opportunities than he does here at Blake. While his job description as head of security differs from his warden job, Mr. Harper appreciates the community and his co-workers at Blake.

Mr. Harper reminisces on memorable career

Junior Tara Adhatamsoontra designed her own vintage high-waisted shorts from baggy mom jeans

Do-it-yourself vintage high-waisted shorts: easy, fashionable, cost-effective trend

Cute, high-waisted shorts from Urban Outfitters, $55. Free People, $68 . Zara, $40. Levis, $44. If you think these prices are reasonable, go ahead and purchase them. However, there is a cheaper, just as trendy alternative to flaunt some vintage denim. Creating these hipster shorts is as easy as one-twothree. First, you need to find a local thrift store. Scavenging through racks for a good pair of high-waisted jeans in your size can be irritating, but its definitely worth it. Look for a pair of jeans that fit your waist but are loose around your legs. Junior Tara Adhatamsoontra says, Thrifting is tricky at first, but once you do it a few times its easier to forage through all the clothes. Then what you should do is decide where you want to cut them. Keep in mind that you dont want them too short; a little length at the bottom is helpful in case you want to cuff or destroy the ends. Draw a dotted line lightly in pen or white chalk where you want to cut them. Also, you are not cutting in a straight line; youre cutting slightly diagonally so that they fit shapelier around your thighs. After cutting your shorts, try them on for fit. Hopefully they sit comfortably above your waist and loose on the thighs. Junior Michele Wallace began creating vintage shorts this summer. She has also bleached and studded her jeans to mix it up a little bit. Wallace says, I always buy more than one at a time, so I can practice in case I mess up. Like any other creative project, you may not get it perfect your first time. Thankfully these jeans only cost $2-$8 at the thrift so you can buy a couple at a time and not feel like youre breaking the bank. We all cant be Marc Jacobs or Calvin Klein, but this is a project that only takes patience and a few dollars. Junior Lara Richli, who has been creating and designing her own jeans for a while now, says, This method is so cost effective, easy and self rewarding. I dont see how anyone could not give it a shot.

The security team is mainly responsible for patrolling the hallways; breaking up the sporadic fights that occurs and making sure students are where they are suppose to be. Mr. Harper feels that being observant is the most important thing that anyone can do. Through observation, he is able to read body language signals and sense if someone is nervous or upset. Even though he loves his job at Blake, Mr. Harper has plans to retire. He is unsure of when, but he knows hell leave sooner rather than later. This is my last stop, Mr. Harper says. Girls varsity soccer reaches high goals

Lady Bengals mix up game as they adjust to unfortunate setbacks
by Kristen Frese and Jake Gordon
Starting the season off slowly, the varsity girls soccer team is working hard to make improvements and cope with the many changes of the new year. Tuesday the Lady Bengals endured a tough loss 10-0 against division opponents the Sherwood Lady Warriors. The team left their best efforts on the muddy playing field, but could not compete with the Lady Warriors strong lineup and team chemistry. Junior forward Lindsey Comer says, We kept hustling throughout the whole game but they just had better skills than us. The girls started their game against the Einstein Lady Titans September 7 but poor weather conditions forced the game to be stopped 15 minutes before the half, with a score of 2-1. The game was resumed Monday and remained scoreless, giving the Bengals their third consecutive win. Says junior forward Lillian Watkins, There is always room for improvement...but were learning. The Lady Bengals earned their second win September 27 against the Gaithersburg Lady Trojans, triumphing 3-0. Says coach Schrumm, It really makes me happy when I see the girls apply the concepts in the games that we have been working on in practice. At the half against Gaithersburg, the Lady Bengals led by only one goal. They could have easily taken control of the game, says junior defender Alison Dionne, But we stayed composed and positive and scored two goals to put the game away. Practice and work paid off September 22 as the Lady Bengals bested the Seneca Valley Lady Screaming Eagles 3-2 at Seneca Valley. Our teams strongest point is playing hard [until] the end, says senior defender Tracy Velazquez. We take advantage of every second on the scoreboard to make the best of what we can. The Lady Bengals suffered a tough 8-0 loss against the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Lady Barons September 20, who have won the last three state championships. Senior midfielder Sam Comer believes that increased communication with each other in games will help the teams success. Adds Comer, Our team needs to work not only on our own skills, but how we play with each other on the field. After junior defender Lindsey Comer tied the game 1-1 with a penalty kick at the half, the Poolesville Lady Falcons broke away in the second half to win 4-1 September 16. The girls suffered their first loss September 13 against the Northwest Lady Jaguars, falling behind with a score of 3-1. Many gaps had to be filled this year, as the team lost twelve seniors and had no returning defenders or forwards. Several players had to learn how to play positions that they had never played before. Even though everyone may not like it, says Sam Comer, The [new positions] are helping the team a lot. The Lady Bengals will face off against the Springbrook Lady Blue Devils at home Monday at 7pm hoping to come out with a division win. I believe that the more practices we have throughout the season, the more we will cooperate with each other and win, adds Sam Comer. I do believe we are making progress, [one] step at a time.

After falling behind 14-6 in the first quarter, the Bengals came back with 23 points in the second quarter, finishing off the half with an 85-yard Hail Mary pass from senior quarterback Julian Carr to senior wide receiver Elijah Bah. The Bengals never looked back as junior running backs Justin Ingram and William Scott added touchdown runs to cap the 40-26 victory. Its a great accomplishment, says Carr, but were not satisfied with three wins. The win over the Wheaton Knights was a great response after the Bengals were shut out at home by the Paint Branch Panthers 34-0 September 23. Blake was plagued by penalties, contributing to the Bengals offensive struggles. Penalties are crucialthey can set back drives and kill momentum, adds Carr. Prior to the game against Paint Branch, the Bengals won their second game of the season in a 1510 victory over the Watkins Mills Wolverines September 16. The game was a nail-biter, but after junior cornerback Ricardo Malcolms one handed interception, Carr threw a 10 yard touchdown pass to Bah for the go-ahead score with 36 seconds left. Junior defensive end Peter Angeh set a school record with four sacks in the game. Says Angeh, We play every game with a chip on our shoulder because we dont believe we are getting the respect we deserve. The come-from-behind victory against Watkins Mill was a reversal of fortune, as a week earlier the team lost 17-10 to the Sherwood Warriors. The Bengals scored first on a five yard run by Scott, and led 7-3 at halftime. However, after a tight second half, Sherwood scored a go-ahead rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter, set up by a 90 yard kick-off return. The Bengals had another chance with the ball on the Sherwood three, but after three consecutive false starts the Bengals turned it over on downs. It was the worst feeling knowing we had the game and lost it on our mistakes, adds Carr. The Bengals opened the season September 2 with an overtime win over the Northwest Jaguars 20-14. After a scoreless first half, senior running back William Sewell caught a five yard touchdown pass from Carr in the third quarter. Scott

added a five yard touchdown run and two-point conversion in the fourth, and the decisive ten yard touchdown run in overtime. This is a...highly motivated team, says Scott. Our coaches put in a lot of work this past off-season to get us to play as a team. Sewell then picked off a pass in overtime sealing the victory. The Bengals will travel to face the Seneca Valley Screaming Eagles October 14, before hosting the Blair Blazers for the homecoming game October 21. Says Sewell, We have gained a lot of chemistry in the past couple months because we all believe in each other and we all have a goal: to win states.

As season runs out, cross country team finishes strong

by Robert Krakaur x & Emily Simmons
With a new girls team and a revamped boys team, the Bengal cross country team is eager to finish the season strong at the county and regional championships and hope to qualify for the state championship November 12. Blake traveled to Boonsboro High School Saturday to participate in the 34th annual Frank Keyser Invitational October 1. The Bengals finished in eighth place out of 13 schools, but the team showed vast improvement across the board with many runners crushing their previous personal best records. We should have taken the race a bit more seriously, says junior Connor Gaffney. You try so hard to get a good time that you forget its actually a race. Gaffney led the team with an authoritative time of 17:09.8 The Bengals went to Seneca Valley September 27 to take on the Screaming Eagles. The Bengals ran well and beat the Screaming Eagles 19-57. Coach Christopher Schenk saw everyone running hard. It looked like everyone, especially our varsity, ran harder in this race than any other, says coach Schenk. The Springbrook Blue Devils were not able to finish better than the Bengals September 24 at the Bull Run Invitational. We all got great times and beat Springbrook and [the] Northwood [Gladiators], teams that usually beat us, says Gaffney. Bull Run is considered the hardest course in the country [so] just finishing was good. Northwood hosted the Bengals September 20. Blake was not able to keep up with the Gladiators as they lost 30-25. The score was close the whole [meet] and I think it kept us motivated to run harder, says senior Erica Wang, But we couldnt pull it out. Blake hosted three schools in a quad-meet September 13: the Kennedy Cavaliers, Paint Branch Panthers, and Wheaton Knights. The Bengals blew out the Cavaliers 18-44 and defeated the Knights 28-

The boys team are 4-2 and hope to win the division title next year. Coach Schenk is excited about all the upcoming youth and the future of the team. We have many new people, especially with the girls team, and everyone is running well. I see a lot of potential for this group, says coach Schenk.

Lady Bengals win big with victories over RM Rockets, Rockville Rams
Veteran field hockey team shows impressive skills, looks forward to states
x by Sammi Levitt and Savannah Tryens
Hoping to make a run to the State Championship, the Lady Bengals varsity field hockey team began their season nearly flawlessly, with six wins and only one loss. The Lady Bengals faced their first loss of the season October 1 against the Sherwood Lady Warriors, losing 4-1. Despite an offensive effort by senior forward Sarah Hagan, who had the only goal, the team was unable to withstand the Lady Warriors persistent scoring. Junior forward Caroline Wannen and senior midfielder Lane Flynn were both absent for the game and without their presence on offense, the team could not counter the Warriors four goals. Says coach Patrick Howley, This years team is very different from past teams in that the roster is deep with many playmakers and many of those players have big game experience. That experience was the leading factor in their most recent win against the Richard Montgomery Lady Rockets September 26. The Lady Bengals triumphed in a 5-0 victory. At home, the team played both the Rockville Lady Rams and the Magruder Lady Colonels and came out victorious. Against the Lady Colonels September 20, Wannen led the team with three goals and one assist, followed by senior midfielder Melina Latona who had two goals and Hagan who added one. The defense had another impressive game and senior defender Meredith Mathis who had one assist led the defensive effort. Cristaldi had two saves and another impressive shut out. Against the Lady Rams September 17, the team clearly dominated and pulled out another 9-0 shutout with an impressive game by senior goalie Courtney Cristaldi and leading goal scorers Hagan and Wannen, who combined have a total of 20 goals this season. Says coach Howley, Just like our past teams we do have some girls that stand out as scoring specialists but its also nice to see that this years team has many girls contributing to the goals that are scored. Going in to the third game without having allowed any goals, the teams confidence was high. It felt good to not have any goals scored on me, says Cristaldi. It really boosted my confidence and I really wanted to continue the streak. Despite her valiant effort, Cristaldi was not able to do so and let in one goal against consortium rivals, the Paint Branch Lady Panthers September 15. The Lady Bengals were still able to hold off the Panthers offensive surge and pull out a 2-1 win. The Lady Bengals started out their season with two shut outs in a row. In their first game against the Einstein Lady Titans September 2, the team won with an impressive 9-0 victory on the road. With confidence high and home field advantage, the Lady Bengals added another win to their record against a tough opponent, the Blair Lady Blazers, defeating them 1-0 September 12. With an impressive 33-5 goal differential, the girls have one of the best records in the county and hope to improve it against consortium rival the Springbrook Blue Devils Monday.

It felt good to not have any goals scored on me...I really wanted to continue the streak.

Varsity volleyball bumps up play, sets stage for successful season

by Michael Joiner x & Karen Vanegas
Moving past the halfway mark of their season, the girls varsity volleyball team set themselves in a position that will serve them well for a victorious year. The Lady Bengals had a successful win over the Blair Lady Blazers in three sets, going 25-13, 25-21, and 25-23, September 30. Many girls have had to step in and play positions that they may not feel so comfortable playing, says coach Jessica Garlick, who was promoted to varsity volleyball coach. I am [truly] proud of these girls. Senior co-captain and libero Tara Mitchell has been out of play for multiple weeks now due to a dislocated kneecap. We have been greatly affected by [her] injury this year, says Coach Garlick, [but], she is [still] our leader on and off the court. Mitchell hopes to make a speedy recovery and return to play. However, this great loss did not stop the Lady Bengals from coming out on top over the Einstein Lady Titans September 27 and the Wheaton Lady Knights September 22, winning both matches 3-0. Springbrook Lady Blue Devils one of Blakes archrivalshad the Lady Bengals full of energy as they were determined to give them all they had. Blake won the match, beating the Lady Blue Devils 3-0 September 20. I think we are playing pretty [well] right now, says senior co-captain Lauren Paniati, but we have some pretty tough matches coming up so we need to keep improving. Blake took on the Northwood Lady Gladiators September 15, and lost one set to the Gladiators, but were able to recover and take over the match and secure a 3-1 win. We need to work on making smarter decisions on the court, says Coach Garlick. Clarksburg Lady Coyotes came to Blake September 9 and were defeated 3-0 as the Bengals used their teamwork to their advantage, shutting out their opponent. All the girls get along really

well, adds Paniati. It helps with our playing because we work really well as a team. The Lady Bengals had a tough loss against Damascus Lady Swarmin Hornets, September 2, 3-0. Im looking forward to how much our team grows, says senior Bridget Gratton. Im hoping that when we get to face Damascus again well be a stronger team, skill-wise and as a [group]. Wednesday evening, the Lady Bengals will take on Richard Montgomery Lady Rockets at Blake. So far, our toughest game has been Damascus but quite honestly, adds Coach Garlick, We have yet to face our toughest opponents.

Record-setting start has Bengals looking for title

x by Michael Errigo & Brandon Weber
After winning a tournament for the first time in Blake history, the varsity boys soccer team has not looked back, setting two records in the young 2011 season. The Bengals improved their record to 5-1-2 after a comeback victory against the Gaithersburg Trojans September 26. Down 2-0 late in the second half, the Bengals got a clutch goal from senior defender Malachi Broadus. I was so happy that I didnt know what to do, Broadus says. After a yellow card against the Trojan keeper, senior captain Moussa Traore scored the tying penalty kick. I didnt feel any pressure because my teammates had a lot of confidence in me, says Traore. In double overtime, the Bengals were awarded a free kick. Junior captain Jason Mayorga fed the ball to Traore, who beat the goalie again, sealing the victory 3-2. Traore gives Mayorga all the credit. To me, [Mayorga] won the game for us, adds Traore. All I had to do was finish. The biggest win of the year came September 20 against the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Barons. The Barons are one of the best teams in the area, so the victory meant a lot to the Bengals. [It] was a high point for the team, says senior goalkeeper Jacob Gill. We proved that we are a force to be reckoned with. They were set back by a 2-2 tie against the Seneca Valley Screaming Eagles, September 22, getting back up with the win against Gaithersburg. The Bengals tied the Einstein Titans September 12, and lost to the Northwest Jaguars September 13. The players were admittedly overconfident before these games. The only thing we changed was our attitude, adds Gill. We have to treat every team like B-CC. The Bengals quickly rebounded with a 1-0 win over the Poolesville Falcons, September 16. They started the season by winning the Oakland Mills Tournament September 3, the first tournament the team has ever won. Says Traore, Winning that tournament gave us a lot of confidence; it made us hungrier. They beat former state champions Westminster Owls and Loch Raven Raiders. The five wins and 14 goals scored are best in Blake history. The players credit new coach David Edlow to their early success, citing his ability to recognize new strengths in players. Says Broadus, Hes looked at our potential at positions we have never played. The team will look to Junior Moussa Traore looks to put a move on a continue its early success en route to a state title. Recovering from a slow start, the coed golf team held tough, got back up, and went nearly undefeated for the rest of the season, and ended with an excellent record of 11-3. The team ended the season with a bang in the County Coed District Tournament September 28, beating every team in their division. Junior Derek Glockers score of 88 earned him an invite to the Montgomery County Public Schools Invitational and he came within four strokes of making the cut for states. We had the mindset to be one of the top teams in our divisions, says Glocker. In their last match of the season, the Bengals went up against the Einstein Titans, Northwood Gladiators and Wheaton Knights September 22. They had great performances from several players, with three of their players shooting 40 or under. Everyone played really well and everyone contributed to the wins, says senior Michael Phelan. They were able to beat the Gladiators and the Knights, but lost to the Titans by only two strokes, just missing out on the division title. We had a lot of fight in us to win, says Glocker. They proved it September 20, with a decisive victory against the Kennedy Cavaliers, also beating Northeast Consortium rival Springbrook Blue Devils 237254. The team beat the Cavaliers again, along with the Watkins Mill Wolverines and the Seneca Valley Screaming Eagles September 13, winning by nearly 50 strokes. With their lowest score of the season September 1, the Bengals had a convincing victory over the Wolverines, Knights and Richard Montgomery Rockets. They scored only 229 points, with senior Christian Jeong leading the way, shooting a 40. In the teams first match of the season against the Screaming Eagles, Rockets and Titans August 24, it scored 263 points, enough to beat the Screaming Eagles, but leaving them just short of the other two opponents. After that match, the team realized, Its important to focus and try to not let anything get to us, says sophomore Tanner Strub.

Girls tennis team makes adjustments with new coach

x by David Hylton & Rachel Jaffe
The Lady Bengals tennis team has not only had to face opponents this season but has also needed to adjust to some new additions such as a new coach and many inexperienced, new players. Tuesday, the Lady Bengals beat the Watkins Mill Lady Wolverines with a 0-7 win. It was a good match, we played very well, says freshman 1st singles player Sydney Wolk. The team hopes that they will be able to keep up this victorious momentum through their remaining matches. The team has had a rough time the past few matches losing against the Springbrook Lady Blue Devils 0-7 September 17. The team was very disappointed, losing a close match against the Clarksburg Lady Coyotes 3-4 September 19, coming down to the third doubles match. The team was able to quickly turn around though, winning against the Seneca Valley Lady Screaming Eagles 6-1 September 14. The one loss was due to a tie breaker between third singles, after each player won a set. [I try to stress the importance of] working hard every day and understanding that everything is important, says Coach Krawczel. While many sport teams tend to depend on one player to put the team on their back, the Lady Bengals tennis team spends time making sure all players are up to par. I think all the members of the team are trying hard and steadily improving, says senior 3rd doubles player Danielle Blocker. Blocker, a new member on the team this year, feels that each player plays an important part on the team. The Bengals had a late start to the season as their first two matches were cancelled. After that, they started out rough, losing their first two matches against the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Lady Barons 0-7 September 12 and the Paint Branch Lady Panthers 0-7 September 13. Though they lost, the team played hard and made the opponent work for their win. B-CC is ranked in Division 1, where Paint Branch is ranked in Division 3 alongside the Lady Bengals. This year the team is led by coach Mike Krawczel, a new math teacher at Blake who is also an avid tennis player. For being a new coach, he is doing a great job, says senior captain Irene Lemberos. He does a great job interacting with everyone and making sure everyones technique is correct.

JV boys soccer recovered from a rocky start this season by winning four straight games through hard work put in at practice and strong plays when it mattered the most. The Bengals extended their winning streak against the Gaithersburg Trojans September 26. The team got off to a quick start and never looked back, scoring two first half goals and winning the game 2-1. We had great communication out there and we played as a unit, says sophomore midfielder Abe Toure. Great play and teamwork

were also displayed September 22, when the Bengals defeated the Seneca Valley Screaming Eagles 3-0. The team saw all their hard work pay off as they put points on the board and shut out the opposition. We worked very hard in the preseason to have success like this, says coach Freddie Gomez. The Bengals toughest game so far was against the strong Bethesda-Chevy Chase Barons September 20, but they held on to win 3-2. The Bengals converted on an early set play, but the Barons soon tied it up. The turning point came right before half time as the Bengals took the lead as time ran out. The team came out of the halftime break energized and quickly added to their lead. Despite a second goal and many opportunities by the opposition to tie the game, strong defense and good discipline helped the Bengals hold off B-CC and pick up a win. We pulled through as a team thanks to good coaching and individual players stepping up, says sophomore midfielder Xavier Fox. A big factor in the success of the team is the experience they get from having 13 sophomores, many of whom played together last year. The knowledge of each others preferences and playing styles going into the season eliminates the adjustment period that is usually needed for most

Predominantly freshmen team boots rough start aside, looks ahead

Though the JV girls soccer team started the season with four consecutive losses, it is starting to gain momentum and is working to improve for both future games and seasons. The girls first win of the season was against the Gaithersburg Lady Trojans September 27, winning 4-1. Coach Stanley Hyman attributes this win to the teams practice of fundamental soccer skills and decrease in basic mistakes. All four goals were scored by different players and coach Hyman hopes that this win will inspire all of the girls to continue working hard. He says, Hopefully we will start believing in ourselves and that will be reflective on the field in our remaininggames. September 22, the Lady Bengals played the Seneca Valley Lady Screaming Eagles. The game started with an exciting goal by freshman forward Elana Harris, but was followed by a goal by the Eagles. Though the game ended in a 1-1 tie, the team feels this was a good game for them as they put their all into each play. Says sophomore defender Shannon Corry, I hope to stay on this winning streak, and not give up on the rest of the games. Just two days before the Seneca Valley game, the girls played the BethesdaChevy Chase Lady Barons. Entering the game, the Lady Bengals knew that it would be a tough game. Though they tried their hardest, the girls lost 8-0. Says freshman defender Grace Johnson, I think we need to improve our teamwork and our skills, but we have a lot of heart and dedication. The Poolesville Lady Falcons proved to be another tough competition, September 16. The Lady Bengals were unable to score and were disappointed by their third loss of the season. Says Corry, Our biggest problem would probably be communicating on the field. The game ended 3-0. Coach Hyman had hoped to win the September 14 game against the Einstein Lady Titans but the girls had a rough start, scoring no goals by half time. Says coach Hyman, Our [loss] to Einstein could have gone either way, but on that day they were better [than] us. The Lady Bengals were unable to score in the second half either, ending the game 4-0. The first game of the season was also a disappointment for the team. The girls played the Northwest Lady Jaguars September 13. The Lady Bengals had hoped to triumph in the season opener, but fell short, losing 3-0. Though the season did not start out as the team had hoped, Mr. Hyman continues to see the potential in all of the girls. He says, The major intangible of this team is the fact that they all play with tremendous heart. The girls will finish off the season by playing rivals Springbrook Lady Blue Devils Monday and Kennedy Lady Cavaliers Wednesday.

teams. Another factor may be the teams confidence. Confidence is key, says Toure. We have that confidence that is needed; we have that swag. Despite their early troubles the team got the season back on track with a 6-0 victory over the Poolesville Falcons September 16. The Bengals lost their first two games 2-1 against the Einstein Titans September 12 and 2-1 to the Northwest Jaguars September 13. The coach and the team remain optimistic for the rest of the season. Says sophomore defender Larson Shilling, We plan on having a good time and winning the rest of our games by doing work and putting 110% into it.

I think we need to improve our teamwork and our skills, but we have a lot of heart and dedication.

JV football struggles to fill big shoes left from last season

by Jamil Goron x & Michelle Ung
After a rocky start, the JV football team looks to get their season back on track, winning their first game of the season over the Wheaton Knights October 1 bringing them to a 1-4 record. The Bengals defeated the Knights 15-6, with star players sophomore captain full back Teyahd Campbell , sophomore captain tight end Jelani Moore and sophomore captain running back Marquis Robinson leading the way. I had a few mistakes, a few penalties, but I think I made up for it on the run, says Robinson. This year is Coach Dustin Jeters first year being head coach of the JV football team, a team made up of mostly freshmen. [I am] disappointed because I know our team is better than what the statistics have shown, says Coach Jeter. Coach Jeter works hard to make sure they succeed by pushing the team at practice everyday, building their team chemistry through tough drills. Consortium rival Paint Branch Panthers beat the Bengals 27-0. The Bengals could not stop the Panthers run game. Sophomore quarterback Brett Silverman ran an efficient offense but could not reach the end zone. Despite their troubles, their leader remains optimistic. Were a team no matter what and we stick together, says Silverman. The game against the Watkins Mill Wolverines ended in a 26-15 loss. For the majority of the game the Bengals were in the red zone but turned the ball over many times. Towards the end, Moore made a spectacular catch for a touchdown and Campbell contributed by making a defensive touchdown. The Bengals suffered a major loss against the Sherwood Warriors 42- 0. The first three drives by the Bengals ended up with Warrior interceptions, starting off the game 21-0. Even though the team

completed some excellent passes and some tough runs, the boys were not able to stop the Warriors effective offense. The Northwest Jaguars were the Bengals opening home opponent. The Bengals only scored on an interception by sophomore defensive back Diego Munoz. It was a big play because it got the whole team fired up, says Munoz. Despite the boost, the Bengals fell 20-6. The team will travel to Seneca Valley to face the Screaming Eagles October 15, before closing out the season with two home games, the Blair Blazers October 22 and the Springbrook Blue Devilss October 27.

JV volleyball team hopes to serve up season that mirrors efforts

by Michael Joiner x & Karen Vanegas
With few returning players, many new additions and a new coach, the JV girls volleyball team has been maintaining a steady pace so far and looks ahead for what remains of the fall season. September 30, the Lady Bengals lost to the Blair Lady Blazers, 25-21 and 25-22. [Our] serves and aces [allowed us to get many] points, says junior co-captain and middle hitter Andrea Taylor. However, the lack of communication among the Lady Bengals proved to be detrimental, leading to a defeat. After three wins, the Einstein Lady Titans beat the Lady Bengals at home in the last two sets. The final score was 25-20, 23-25, and 12-15. Prior to that match, the Lady Bengals defeated the Wheaton Lady Knights September 22, 25-17 and 25-19. Sophomore Claudia Alarco says, The [Lady Knights] did not have good hustlevolleyball is ultimately about the hustle and effort [that is] put in. September 20, the Lady Bengals took on consortium rival, Springbrook Lady Blue Devils. The 25-23 and 25-21 win over the Lady Blue Devils was the teams second win of the season. We got our heads in the game and [made] a lot of great plays, says sophomore Cathleen Ho. Before the Springbrook game, the Lady Bengals traveled to Northwood, where they defeated the Lady Gladiators 25-22 and 25-21. The September 15 match was the beginning of a three-game winning streak. We called the ball, [we] shook off our mistakes, says Taylor, We played our game. The Clarksburg Lady Coyotes defeated the Lady Bengals in straight sets, 25-19 and 25-15 September 9. [They] were our hardest opponent because [not only did] they play really well, [but] many of our new players were nervous, says Taylor. Facing the Damascus Lady Swarmin Hornets for the opening game of the season ended with the Bengalsfirst loss. The September 9 encounter concluded with a 25-22 and 25-15 defeat. At that time we were still trying to pull it together, says Ho. As the Lady Bengals look forward, the players only hope to improve their game. Coach Duvall has a very different outlook on the gamehis strictness [is what] really pushes all of us to our [full] potential, says Alarco. Coach Duvall adds, At this moment my team needs to work on their confidence and chemistry on court. These are things that cant really be taught, but come with practice and playing together. Wednesday, the Lady Bengals will face the Richard Montgomery Lady Rockets at home. [Since] we didnt play them last year, Im ready to see how good they are, says Taylor, [Im ready] for us to play our best.

Lady Bengals move past inexperience, gain confidence, improve skills

Field hockey team looks to game against consortium rival Springbrook
by Savannah Tryens x & Sammi Levitt
With many freshmen on the team, the Lady Bengals JV field hockey team has had a good start to the season considering their inexperience. The Lady Bengals faced an upsetting loss against the Sherwood Lady warriors, October 1. The team lost 1-0 and was unable to counter the Lady Warriors lone goal that came in the last moments of the game. Although it was a tough defeat the team hopes to bounce back for their last game of the season. September 26, the girls faced a tough opponent, the Richard Montgomery Lady Rockets, and lost 1-0. Says sophomore midfielder Kristina McKenna, Losing by one is really tough because there is always that thought that if we [had done] thisbut the loss wont bring our confidence down, it will just motivate us to work harder. The Lady Bengals were able to pull off two consecutive wins beating the Rockville Lady Rams 4-0 and the Magruder Lady Colonels 2-0, September 20. Against the Lady Rams, two of the goals were scored by sophomore attack Emma Friedman and two from sophomore attack Ruth Addisu. Against the Colonels, the goals were scored by Friedman and freshman attack Alexa Steadman. The girls suffered a discouraging loss to consortium rival, the Paint Branch Panthers September 15. Sophomore goalie Teddi Lemberos had an outstanding game, only letting in one of the several shots taken at her, but unfortunately the opposing goalie did not allow any. The result was yet another 1-0 loss. Says Lemberos, It was unfortunate that we lost, but at the same time, it was helpful because we were able to practice and improve on all the mistakes we made. September 12, the girls played their home opener against the Blair Lady Blazers who they tied 2-2 in a hard-fought game. The game went into two overtime periods; goals were scored by Addisu and freshman midfielder Madeleine Noonan-Shueh. The team put everything we could into the game, says sophomore midfielder Caroline Tatnall. The Lady Bengals began the season with a shutout against the Einstein Lady Titans September 2, beating them 4-0. The goals were scored by Friedman and Tatnall and junior attack Candace Grant. Starting off with such a notable win really gave the team the confidence we need to excel in the season and show that we are a force to be reckoned with, says McKenna. Looking forward to the rest of the season, the girls only have one game left against Consortium rivals, Springbrook Lady Blue Devils Tuesday.

We were able to practice and improve on all the mistakes we made.

Defense carries Redskins as team starts season at 3-1

After holding on to beat the St. Louis Rams 17-10 Sunday, the Washington Redskins enter their bye week tied atop the NFC East with a record of 3-1. The buzz surrounding the 2011 team stems not only from its impressive early record, but also from standout performances by newcomers, such as rookie outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan, the Redskins first round draft pick. He made his presence known early when he batted and caught Eli Mannings pass and ran it in for his first NFL touchdown in a 28-14 Week 1 victory over the New York Giants. Kerrigan is one of many players who have excelled this season in defensive coordinator Jim Hasletts 3-4 scheme. The Redskins defense struggled in 2010, but it seems to have found the missing pieces in Kerrigan, safety OJ Atogwe, nose tackle Barry Cofield, and even defensive end Stephen Bowen, who has performed admirably in the absence of rookie Jarvis Jenkins. The defense has looked strongest on third down and in the red zone, as it held the Cowboys without a touchdown of a botched hold by punter Sav Rocca in the second quarter. It was the third time in the first three weeks that the Redskins were unable to capitalize on a field goal try, givA big concern heading into the season was at the quarterback position, which came down to a preseason battle between Rex Grossman and John Beck. Grossman earned the starting job and, despite throwing five interceptions, has provided Redskins fans with a confidence that has been lacking at the position in recent memory. Still, the turnovers will need to come down in order for the Redskins to succeed all season. After the bye, the Redskins will host the Philadelphia Eagles, who enter their Week 5 match-up with the Buffalo Bills at 1-3. To be successful, the defense must contain Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, who torched the Redskins in a 59-21 shellacking on national television last season. On the offensive side, the Redskins rushing attack will need to come up big against a defense which has allowed nearly 140 yards per game on the ground, 30th in the league.

in an 18-16 loss, September 26. However, a decisive play in that game did happen to come on third down, when the Redskins allowed a 30 yard pass on third and 21 late in the fourth quarter, setting the Cowboys up for the game winning field goal. Another key play came in the form

Washington prepares for new year with busy, impressive off season
x by Andrew Markowitz
Building a Stanley Cup-winning roster has eluded the Washington Capitals in recent years, but things may be looking up for the Caps with the arrival of several new faces in DC. General manager George McPhee had a very busy but successful offseason, making promising acquisitions and trades to revamp this Washington roster. It wasnt an easy journey; McPhee released several familiar faces to make room for the new ones. Boyd Gordon, Semyon Varlamov, and Eric Fehr will no longer be rocking the red, but the new arrivals are more than enough to fill the void. The first major move by Washington was to acquire left winger Troy Brouwer from the Chicago Blackhawks during the NHL Entry Draft in exchange for a first-round pick. Brouwer signed a two-year, $4.6 million deal with the Caps, a reasonable contract for a gritty winger. During Chicagos championship run in 2010, Brouwer notched eight points, including two goals in Game One of the Cup finals. Another new addition to Washingtons locker room is right wing Joel Ward, formerly of the Nashville Predators. Ward is an excellent two-way forward, useful on either the power play or penalty kill. Last season, Ward scored ten goals and 29 points, including five power play goals and a team-leading 13 points in the 2011 playoffs. Ward will be in D.C. for some time, signing a four-year, $12 million contract. Losing veteran defenseman Scott Hannan to Calgary proved no problem for the Caps, as they signed Montreal Canadians defenseman Roman Hamrlik for two years and $7 million. Hamrlik was once a great threat in shutting down the Washington top-guns, but will now see time on the blue-line opposite left winger Alex Ovechkin on the power play. Hamrlik is also a 30-point scoring defenseman and, like Joel Ward, is a valuable asset on a man-advantage or penalty kill. Probably the biggest buzz for

Capitals look to new faces to bring home the long-awaited Stanley Cup

Washington occurred when they signed Florida Panthers goaltender Tomas Vokoun for a one-year contract, worth a measly $1.5 million. McPhee really got a great deal on Vokoun, who ranked among the top goalies in save percentage in each of his NHL seasons. Last year, Vokoun found a spot in the top 20 goaltenders, with an impressive 92.6%. Vokoun will have to battle youngster Michal Neuvirth for the number one goalie spot at the start of the season. Washington will host division rivals Carolina Hurricanes, in the season opener at Verizon Center tomorrow night at 7pm. Last season, the Caps took five of six meetings between these two teams, the lone defeat suffered in a shootout.

Senior Bengal hopes to glide, run, pedal way to success

Most people can swim, bike, and runbut senior Shawn Glisson is attempting to do all three, back-to-back-to-back in his first 750 meter swim, 20 kilometer bike, five kilometer run triathlon this November. Glisson was first exposed to the multi-sport competition in August, when he was working as a lifeguard at Martin Luther King Swim Center, and was called in to guard for a biathlon. He was working with another MLK guard who competes in triathlons and marathons regularly and she told him about the people she meets and how they train. Glisson says, I just kind [of] thought, I can do that. While working three days a week at MLK swim center, Glisson has full access to a pool and weight room. He also tries to run at least twice a week, usually running the mile and a half loop around his neighborhood. At MLK Ill get out and Ill swim, then Ill hop on a treadmill and then hop on a bike. I cant really say Ive done it, but Ive done the distance. Although Glisson is less experienced in the

Its a really interesting group of people, says Glisson, There are the people that are there to place and then [there are] people that are just there to finish. In addition to his rigorous training routine, Glisson has been careful to watch what he eats by cutting junk food, soda, caffeine and sugar out of his diet. Despite all these measures Glisson has told few people of his goals as a triathlete. Adds Glisson, I know I want to do it, I know Im going to do it, and I know Im capable of doing it; I just havent done it yet. Although he has not set a date for his first triathlon, Glisson remains confident and hopes to one day work his way up to an Iron Man (a longer distance triathlon that requires time trials). Underclassmen bring fresh Bengal spirit to varsity cheerleading squad

by Adele Leishman x & Nicole Sterling
The sound of the Roaring Bengals echoes throughout the stadium. The students begin to get rowdy as the varsity cheerleaders pump up the crowd. Looking down from the stands, a cluster of unfamiliar faces are spotted within the squad, proudly showing Bengal pride. This year, varsity cheerleading has had the privilege to introduce six new freshmen girls to their 21 member team: Kendall Meyer, Samantha Lowenthal, Taylor Boone, Amani Mosley, Alyssia Graves and Kathryn Brown. Even with previous experience in competitive cheerleading and gymnastics, cheering on varsity is no easy task. [Varisty cheerleading] is very challenging since most of the team already knows all of the cheers and dances and everything moves very quickly, says Meyer. The cheers are very similar and its kind of difficult to remember which is which. Even though she started All Star cheer training in the fourth grade after prior gymnastics experience, Lowenthal admits cheering for varsity can be difficult but enjoys the challenge. Cheerleading requires you to keep your body very tight, says Lowenthal, my arms usually get pretty soreit can be very tiring at times. Despite experiencing a lower back injury earlier in the year, Lowenthal has continued to keep her head high and is determined to cheer throughout high school. Says Lowenthal, I have tried so many sports and cheer is the only one I have ever stayed with because I love it. Cheerleading for about five years now after an old friend introduced her to it, Graves was given the opportunity to share her talent. Last year, Graves was asked to perform at the 2010 Pro Bowl after her competitive cheerleading team won U.S. Finals National Champions. Although she is no longer active on her competitive cheer team, Graves is ambitious to cheer throughout high school. I would love to receive a cheer scholarship for college, says Graves. The drive I get to do better each and every day really

motivates me. In addition to strenuous practices each day after school, balancing school work can be quite a challenge. Graves sometimes finds it difficult to manage her time; getting home late and doing homework throughout the night, she gets little sleep. However, Graves says, I feel that it is pushing me to the extent where I need to be. [Cheerleading] is a good way to get involved in school activitiesit makes you prioritize your time to get the most important things done, says Meyer. The girls are looking forward to a successful cheer season while effectively managing their time and building strong relationships with their cheer sisters.

New competition sparks rivalry between Blake, Springbrook, Paint Branch

by John Beers x & Andrew Markowitz
Rivalry games between Springbrook and Paint Branch high schools will be taken to a whole new level this year as the Bengals will now be fighting with the Panthers and Blue Devils for the newly created Consortium Cup. The Consortium Cup is a trophy that will be awarded to whichever Northeast Consortium school wins the most games against its NEC rivals in all varsity sports. We agreed this would be a good thing, says Athletic Director Jared Fribush. This draws a lot of attention to the events [and]

brings more interest to the athletes for all three schools. In the Consortium Cup competition, wins will be worth three points and ties worth one. The team with the most points at the end of the season will have their name inscribed on the trophy and keep until the end of the following school year. Says varsity girls soccer player Kaylie Deshler, Knowing the trophy is at stake most definitely ups the motivation. The thought of [Springbrook or Paint Branch] winning it over us will give us the motivation we need. [This competition] makes me never want to lose to Springbrook or Paint Branch in any sport, says senior golfer Michael Phelan. Over the years the Bengals have been traditionally strong in baseball, basketball, girls lacrosse and swim and dive, winning a combined 23 division championships. With an improvement in football, the Bengals look to have a serious shot at bringing home the trophy to Blake. Varsity sports collected 20 wins versus consortium rivals last year and will look

to make it even more this year to secure the Cup. Many Blake student-athletes are looking forward to trying to bring the Cup home to Blake in the inaugural season of the competition. It would mean a lot to me and my teammates because we would be the first to ever win [the Cup], says varsity football player Henry Adjah. That trophy would look spectacular in our trophy case. This competition will mean more than just a shiny trophy and the pride of winning those impor-

tant rivalry games. The competition will try to change Blakes reputation as a school that only focuses on the arts into a school that will also attract future studentathletes. Adds Mr. Fribush, We get a reputation in the community that were all about our signature program. Wed like to show were very strong in athletics. As of today, the Bengals have put up victories in varsity field hockey, cross country, and varsity volleyball against their Consortium rivals. Hopefully Blake athletics [will] be taken more seriously so that kids might choose Blake not just for arts, says volleyball coach Jessica Garlick.

[This competition] makes me never want to lose to Springbrook or Paint Branch.

Bengals Marching Band plays new tune to meet this years expectations
Stomping to a different beat, students continue to play on
Because of the small budget by Yasmin Wamala & afforded to the class, the band has had xSavannah Doane-Malotte Changes in the Roaring Bengals Marching Band, such as the addition of a marching band class and recent budget cuts, have greatly remodeled the definition of the band as a whole. Marching band has now become a class; in previous years it was considered an extracurricular activity. Now practice times have shifted, allowing school athletes to participate in band. The changes have impacted the band in size, but I feel it has helped, says senior section leader Christian Domaas. We are better sounding and have a group that cares more as a whole which makes it a lot of fun. Another large change within the Roaring Bengals was the discontinuation of pre-season band camp over to make some sacrifices, such as not playing at away football games or entering in competitions. However, the band still makes itself heard at events such as the past Burtonsville Day Parade and the upcoming Thanksgiving Day Parade in Downtown Silver Spring. In past years, the marching band has been involved in several performances such as the Sugar Bowl, giving students once-in-a-lifetime opportunities and a sense of accomplishment. Kim Kardashians royal wedding will become guilty pleasure for many
x by Karen Vanegas
Here comes the brideA wedding is an occasion filled with love and purity. But not this time! Kim Kardashians second wedding, this time to NBA player Kris Humphries, was filled with excessive, extreme extravagance; certainly not purity (infamous tape, anyone?). At this point, I am convinced that Kardashians derriere is more authentic than reality television itself. Lets be honest, Humphries did not come up with the engagement scene we saw on the season finale. In any case, tune in to E! 8pm October 9 and 9pm October 10. Why? Because Keeping Up with the Kardashians is a guilty pleasure? Guilty as charged. I personally will probably watch Kims Fairytale Wedding: A Kardashian Event. Indisputably, I will be going against all my beliefs; as I find this multi-million dollar affair absolutely preposterous. Yes; I hate to admit it, but I love the Kardashian clan. After all, the special will certainly be overflowing with the standard drama, feistiness and wit that run through the Kardashian bloodline. When it is all said and done, there will be nothing new, simply the addition of another puppet to the already eclectic clan. If you have the self-control to restrain your hand from tuning in to the special, consider yourself lucky. After all, it is all a monetary scheme. A renowned magazine already helped pay off the nuptials by purchasing the royal wedding exclusive photos. High ratings for E! equal money that will go back to the already wealthy couple. If you accept the idea of helping pay

for this exaggerated occasion, get ready to see A-listers strutting their best looks and buckle down, and expect to see an innocent Mason Disick and stunning Kardashian bridesmaids. Get comfy, grab a snack, and get ready to take notes from Bridezilla la Kardashian, who has been planning this wedding since she was ten years old. As tensions rise, friction threatens the familys unity; as stress mounts, tears roll down. I will consider it a miracle if the Kardashian-Humphries duo is still together by Sunday.

From fashion to friends, Warner gives photography a new edge

Few are lucky enough to recognize their passion and talent in their youth; but with the mere click of the shutter in fifth grade, senior Margi Warner knew that she would be capturing a myriad of moments. I love capturing moments which most people forget, says Warner. A photograph is like freezing time. Warner has had a couple of her photos in an art show at school, but never before had the opportunity to have own exhibit, until Davies Memorial Unitarian Universalist Church gave her that opportunity. Her exhibit, called My Generation, runs from August 28 until tomorrow. The exhibit features her friends and people shes met. [Portrait photography] really gives you a lot to work with, adds Warner. People are so unique and different. People in general inspire her: their actions, their clothing style, their drama its all fun to photograph, says Warner. Lyrics and other art from musicians to photographers inspire Warner as well. She stresses that everyone and everything is distinctive and should be photographed accordingly. Even so, I add a little bit of myself into every photograph I take, says Warner. Warner has had a passion for the arts since she was three years old; she danced, drew and painted for a. She later came to realize, however, that brush to canvas and body to rhythm werent hitting home for her. She is planning to go to an arts college and major in photography. Warner specifically wants to pursue fashion photography. A lot of people say that its a hard industry to get into, says Warner. I think the challenge is all the more fun. Warner hopes her peers will one day be viewing her photography from fashion magazines such as Vogue, Bazaar and Elle. As for now, her photography is displayed on Facebook and Flickr, and she is in the process of making her own website. A variety of her artwork is being shown at her exhibit. She encourages aspiring artists to do what they love, and to be original and have fun. As cheesy as it sounds, says Warner, people get too lost in competition in the art fieldand forget the real picture.

Stage Company performs Elton Johns celebrated Aida

x by Leisha Winley & Samara Tu
Falling in love with your kidnapper may sound insane to many, but it makes for great drama and controversy, as it does in the Blake Stage Companys fall musical, Aida. Premiering November 11, the musical is a love story between Aida, the princess of Nubia who has been forced into slavery, and her Egyptian capturer, Radames. In this play, Aida must decide whether or not to remain as a rebellious leader of her enslaved people or to pursue true love with Radames. The role of Aida is played by seniors Alex Reeves and Yasmin Wamala. Says Wamala, Looking at the cast and seeing the energy and effort that everyone puts in during rehearsals, Im very confident that this is going to be an amazing show. Wamala is excited to have a lead role one of her final plays at Blake. Radames is played by senior Yann Ellinghaus and junior Ryan Reynolds. The play will be kept in its originality and will feature the contemporary rock styles written by Elton John and Tim Rice. Aida has been performed at the school before, during the summer of 2010. Director Michel DAnna hopes audiences will enjoy the play and see it more than once. Junior Charles Harper plays Mereb, a Nubian servant to Radames. He no longer is playing the funny guy he usually acts in plays. Says Harper, For this part, I really have to feel what its like to be a slave and

Fall musical hopes to draw bigger audience with intense acting, drama

Im going to show the desperation for [wanting to be] free. Adds Wamala, Recently, Blake has been doing a lot of shows that are more on the comedic side; Aida is more serious and dramatic. The musical is being released this fall instead of its usual release in the spring so that more people will be able to participate without the stress of AP tests. The role of Amonasro, the Nubian King and Aidas father, is played by senior Richard Jones-Muhammad. I think [the audience] will feel pity, understanding and joy toward some characters [and] distaste and possibly hatred towards others, says Jones-Muhammad. Either way, the crowd will go home with Aida on their minds and [on] the tip of their tongues.

Dolphin Tale: definitely above see-level
x by Melissa Whitaker
Good movies play with the audiences feelings and are often both inspiring and tragic. Dolphin Tale delivers such a journey of emotions. Charles Martin Smith directs an all-star cast including Morgan Freeman, Harry Connick Jr and Ashley Judd who together deliver a compelling and inspiring tale. Based on a true story, this movie chronicles a baby dolphin that washed up on the Florida coast in 2005 with her tail caught in a crab trap. A fisherman contacted the Florida Clearwater Marine Aquarium who took her in; unfortunately, they had to amputate her entire tail along with two vertebras because of the severity of her injuries. The idea of giving a dolphin a prosthetic tail seemed silly at first, but the doctors thought that if the same type of false limbs could work for humans, it may work for animals, too. However, the first attempts to put the prosthetic on the dolphin proved difficult when it couldnt stay on properly, which made me grip my friends hand in fear. The story has minor details added for Hollywood purposes but the heart of it is the same: a group of strangers banding together to save one life. I dont think I have ever smiled and laughed so much during a movie nor been so nervous to the point I had tears in my eyes moments after. I was probably one of the oldest people there aside from parents, but I wasnt embarrassed at all. I fell in love with Winter and her story, wanting to hop into the screen and give her a hug. Im usually not very big on this type of movie, but I really, truly, loved this. Dolphin Tale will widen smiles and maybe even produce a few drops of tears, but you will definitely leave the theater happy, yearning to meet the dolphin. You can see her at www.seewinter.com, with their webcam feature, but its not nearly as cool as seeing her story on the big screen. In short, this is a movie you wont regret seeing in theatres.

Lautner lost along with the rest of us in Abduction

Abduction, starring Taylor Lautner, follows Nathan Harper, a carefree teen, who while conveniently doing a school project on child abductions with his childhood crush Karen (Lilly Collins) comes across a photo of himself as a child, leading him to believe that he was abducted and his entire life is a lie. Moments after learning this information, Harpers parents are murdered in front of him, leading Harper to go on the run from Russian spies and the CIA. The film was confusing to say the least. It jumped around too much and had so many unrealistic characteristics that I was left more amused than entertained. For example, Lautner and Collins characters were in Pittsburgh one minute, Virginia the

next, then back in Pittsburgh only to go on an Amtrak in an attempt to go to Nebraska (Why? I dont know.), just to go back to Pittsburgh so Harper could take matters into his own hands. While on the Amtrak, Collins and Lautner managed to have a steamy make out session in an abandoned car, moments after Collins sullenly asked Lautner if they were going to die and with the threat of a Russian Clark Kent look-a-like spy lurking behind them. Nothing in the movie made sense. The abduction that the film is named after is, how do I say this, nonexistent. Lautner never learns who his real parents are, beside the fact that they are CIA spies, and the movie comes off more as creepy than the thriller it claimed to be. Throughout the film, Col-

lins and Lautner are tracked through their cell phones, cars and even Lautners own webcam (can you say disturbing?). I didnt expect Lautners Abduction to compare in any way to Matt Damons Bourne films, but I hadnt expected to be underwhelmed the entire duration of the film. Lautner seemed to be confused with which movie he was in. There were too many moments when Lautner resembled his past character of a werewolf, rather than a human being. Personally, for a kid who rode on the hoods of trucks and who drove a Harley with no helmet, he seemed to brood quite a lot. Overall, the film was underdeveloped, predictable and had one of the corniest endings I have ever seen. Dont waste your time or money.

For years the only change to FIFA has been a new number on the cover, but EA has finally stepped up with FIFA 12: a game truly unlike any other sports game on the market. Sports games are usually all about their game play and FIFA 12 is all about its constant fluidity throughout the whole match. Interactions between players and the movement of the ball really do justice for physics engineering; when seeing characters fly through the air after a collision with another, I could have mistaken a FIFA 12 match for a La Liga game on television. There is a secret to the game though:

The first thing you notice as you turn on the game is a change to the menu with a new experience point bar, which measures your progress and commitment to the game. Points can only be earned through online and offline game modes, like exhibition matches, Virtual Pro and Ultimate Team. The new leveling-up factor urges gamers to try to be ranked higher than their friends. However, my Ultimate Team still remains unchallenged by any of my friends on the Playstation Network. The overall rating of this FIFA 12: 9.5/10; its truly outstanding.

Foxs New Girl falls short of viewers expectations

Bengal disappointed after shows second episode
by Niki Byrd pretending to be reverse Mormons, reminding her to shave her legs and watching Dirty Dancing about six or seven times a day. Jess also has the loving support of her best friend and model Cece (Hannah Simone), who is unaffected by Schmidts continuous come-ons and always has Jess back. The season premiere of New Girl was absolutely adorable and comical, leaving me with high hopes for the following episodes. However, the second episode fell far short of my expectations. Not only did they remove Coachs character from the show after just one episode, but they replaced him with the new character of Winston played by Lamorne Morris, who, in my opinion, lacks energy and charisma. Schmidts wannabe player attitude was amusing at first, but

Niki Byrd

Whos that girl? Its Jess! Or rather, it is Zooey Deschanel in Foxs new show New Girl. Deschanel plays a quirky young woman named Jess Day, who has just gone through a humiliating and awkward breakup with her cheating boyfriend Spencer (Ian Wolterstorff). In attempt for a fresh start, Deschanel moves out and answers a Craigslist ad for a roommatewith three other guys. Nick (Jake Johnson), Schmidt (Max Greenfield), and Coach (Damon Wayans) assume the roles of big brothers for Jess through this very emotional time in her life. This includes singing I Had the Time of My Life in the middle of a restaurant,

now it has become overtly perverted and annoying. Moreover, Spencers wizard-like powers over Jess due to his so-called beautiful hair are highly overrated for he is downright disgusting. And although I have always been a fan of Deschanels classic character of the eccentric girl-next-door, the writing in the show exaggerates this persona to the point that she is exasperating. I had been looking forward to this show all summer and expected it to be my new favorite show. After the promising premiere I immediately started quoting the show and planned to write an awesome review. Unfortunately, no matter how badly I wanted to love this show, I was disappointed and can only hope it improves.
