*Album Premiere for Wendell Kimbrough featuring Andy Zipf & Justin Trawick* [Washington, DC] The Atlas Performing Arts Center will host three of the most dynamic singer/songwriters in the DC metro region on Friday, November 18, 7:30PM. Wendell Kimbrough headlines with his 7-piece New-Orleans-style jazz band, featuring performers from DC and NYC, including renowned hot-jazz clarinetist Gary Gregg of Chaise Lounge. The band will be premiering Kimbroughs highly anticipated new album, Things That Cant Be Taught. Opener Justin Trawick, who the Washington Post called our very own John Mayer, will kick off the night with his signature urban folk rock, followed by Andy Zipf, whose most recent album Paste Magazine described as a showcase of Zipfs capacity to produce one great hook after another. This birst-time gathering of 3 of DCs best and brightest singer/songwriters will happen in the heart of The Districts blourishing H Street neighborhood, at the Atlas Performing Arts Center, 1333 H St. NE. Two years in the making and successfully fan-funded through Kickstarter.com in just 48 hours, Kimbroughs new album features some of the best musicians the DC metro region has to offer. In addition to clarinetist Gregg of Chaise Lounge, Howard graduate Quincy Philips of local jazz trio The Young Lions plays drums and is joined by cornet/trumpet instructor and leader of the Washington Conservatory Jazz Ensemble, Dave Robinson. With these talents gathered, Kimbrough is able to draw on inbluences ranging from early 20th century jazzchanneled through greats like Louis Armstrong and contemporary composer Randy Newmanto folk heroes of the 1970s, James Taylor and John Prine. early Tom Waits record, rooted in the pre-rock-era jazz, folk, and soul music of the American South. About Wendell Kimbrough Wendell Kimbrough has been making music since at least 1985. His family tells the story of how, at 2 years old, Kimbrough was not yet speaking, classifying him a late talker and giving his parents concern. But his reticence to speak was coupled with an aptitude for melody and an enthusiasm for humming. Before long, the piano player at his family's church discovered the toddler carrying a familiar tune. Amazed, she soon had Kimbrough giving his birst public musical performance before the entire Presbyterian Church of Clio, Alabamaa hummed rendition of the 1860 hymn, Jesus Loves Me. Fast forward 26 years, and the Alabama native is a singer/songwriter based in Washington, DC. On the long journey since that birst public performance, Kimbrough grew from a late talker into a self-taught guitarist, piano player, accordion dabbler, songwriter, and producer. After his 2009 debut, Find Your Way Home, Kimbrough spent 2 years writing, performing, and recording the songs for Things That Cant Be Taught. In the meantime he built an enthusiastic local following, sought out the musicians whose talents make the new album soar, and shared the stage with indie songsmiths Damien Jurado, Dennison Witmer, and Elizabeth and the Catapult.
