PEDESTRIAN SAFETY FOR GASKILL STREET

After months of hard work, lead by President David Cullane, the Canowindra Business Chamber now invite comment from all residents and businesses in Canowindra at the next Chamber meeting to be held 7pm Wednesday 16 November 2011 in the CWA Rooms. Cabonne Council have prepared a design plan for a Gaskill Street Pedestrian Blister and Refuge Island Crossing to ensure the safety of pedestrians. Benefits of this plan would give the elderly, children and wheelchair users a safety zone whilst crossing Gaskill Street. Some issues that have been raised are the loss of some parking spaces, however when Gaskill Street will be resurfaced early next year, a review of the current accessible parking spaces will be conducted. If you are unable to attend the meeting, please forward any comments to Mr Cullane on 02 6344 3265 as soon as possible.

BEWARE WHO YOU LET IN YOUR DOOR There has been a number of stories circulating that there are some rather unscrupulous people operating within our community, targeting the elderly and those who live by themselves. Im not one to believe everything I hear, however if these rumours are true then there is just cause to advise those who may need some help and advice. These operators knock on doors of residents and ask if they can use their bathroom, have a glass of water or some excuse to be let in. Upon entering they case the joint to see what can be taken and sold easily, then they or another person come back when no one is home and steals the goods. Another approach is knocking on a door and asking for money, and if money isnt handed over then threats are made to the resident and their property. If you have been a victim of this sort of behaviour, or if you are approached in a similar way as outlined above, please call the police on 02 6344 1300, or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 where you can report criminal activity anonymously. As a community we need to be vigilant and aware that there is a bad element within this town and let these people know that it is entirely unacceptable. REPORT ALL CRIME, if it isnt reported then we risk reduced police patrols. Remember, 000 is for emergency calls.

DRIVE SAFELY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON After a number of serious collisions around the area over the last week, now is a timely reminder to take care when youre driving. With school holidays and Christmas looming, there will be more vehicles on the road, drivers will be impatient and the kids excited. A few tips to remember are: Using your headlights when driving allows you to be seen better by other drivers. Give your kids games, music or DVDs to keep them occupied during the drive. Get a good nights sleep before commencing a long trip. Do not drive at times when you would normally be asleep. Avoid long drives after work. Take regular breaks from driving (use rest areas & Driver Reviver stops). Share the driving whenever possible. Pull over and stop when drowsiness, discomfort or loss of concentration occurs. Get your car checked all over at a mechanic. Let family or friends know when you are leaving and what time you expect to arrive, and ring them as soon as you get to your destination. Speeding remains the biggest killer on our roads. In NSW speeding is a factor in about 40 per cent of road deaths. This means on average around 177 people die each year in speed-related crashes in NSW. Speeding increases your chance of having a crash, and increases the risk of serious injury or death if you do crash. Slow down and be safe, you might get there a little later, but at least you will get there alive. For more tips and information on traffic, please visit www.rta.nsw.gov.au

CABONNE TO HONOUR VOLUNTEERS Volunteers in Cabonne Shire will be honoured at a series of events throughout the Shire over the next week to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the United Nations International Year of the Volunteer. And Councillors will be donning aprons to cater for the men and women who selflessly help those in need or provide the lifeblood for community organisations and events. Mayor Bob Dowling said Councillors would be joining groups such as Mens Sheds and Lions Clubs to get behind barbecues at eight events to thank the volunteers who are the backbone of Cabonne. Cr Dowling invited all Cabonne volunteers to come along to the various functions being held in eight Cabonne villages from Friday 18 November to Saturday 26 November 2011. He said many of Council operations relied on the good will of voluntary workers. Volunteers are essential to society, and many organisations like Councils, charities or even governments would struggle to survive without their support, Cr Dowling said. I cant speak highly enough of our volunteers who give so much time to organisations like the Rural Fire Service, State Emergency Services, CWA, Red Cross, service clubs, schools and our sporting organisations. Many volunteers do their good work for nothing more than the satisfaction they get from knowing that they are helping others in their community, but the community should realise that many of these people are left well out pocket for the important work that they perform. Cr Dowling said there were few aspects of life in Australia that did not involve volunteers. They are the backbone of rural communities. No governments, Federal, State or Local, could carry out the scope of services as well, he said. For that reason, Cabonne Council has decided to personally thank our volunteers in some way by holding events to publicly recognise their contribution. The schedule of events includes: Friday 18 November 2011: Canowindra Mens Shed 11am-2pm (Crs Walker & Durkin) Mullion Creek Public School 5.30pm (Cr Culverson) Saturday 19 November 2011: Manildra Golf Club (Cr John Farr) Sunday 20 November 2011: Molong Recreation Ground lunchtime barbecue (Crs Gosper & Bleakley) Yeoval Banjo Paterson Park 12.30pm (Cr Dowling) Cumnock Crossroads Building 4pm (Crs Dowling & Wilcox) Thursday 24 November 2011: Cudal Mens Shed with catering by Cudal Lions Club (Cr Dean) Saturday 26 November 2011: Eugowra Apex Park 9am (Crs Hyde & Dean with assistance from local schools).

Vietnamese Spring Rolls 1 packet large dried rice wrappers 1 cup cooked chicken, shredded 1 cup fresh coriander leaves 1 cup shredded Wombok 1/2 large cucumber, julienned 1 carrot, grated 1 cup fresh bean sprouts Dressing: 4 tbsp sesame oil 2 tbsp soy sauce 1/2 tsp sugar 2 tbsp boiling water Chilli to taste Place all ingredients except rice wrappers & dressing into separate bowls. Fill a large shallow bowl with boiling water. Place all bowls on table with rice wrappers on a plate. Combine dressing ingredients together & mix well, pour into dipping bowls. Build your rolls by putting a wrapper into hot water, use a chop stick to cover it well with water for 30 secs. Remove & place on plate, add pieces of chicken and salad items up the middle of the wrapper. Fold up bottom 1cm over the filling, then fold over left & right sides to cover. Dip roll into dressing and eat immediately. This is a fun meal for kids to help themselves, just be careful of the hot water.

SWIMMING CLUB Swimming Club this week saw times fall in both the spoon heats and the 66BBB, the differences were so great ion some cases that feet should have been checked for flippers!! In the 33m freestyle Samuel Brand destroyed his time by 14 seconds, closely followed by Lucas Ellis, 10 seconds, and Caleb Giger, 9 seconds. Jessica Bennett and Ryan Ellis took 6 seconds from their best times. In the Spoon Final, Zali Dunn swam 3 seconds below her personal best so the Spoon went to Mitchell Stanley who dropped his time by 1 second to a PB of 27 seconds.
