LeTTeR
This month, the NYO team descended upon
FEED Projects unfussy downtown ofces to meet
Lauren Bush Lauren. Rather than photograph the
new Mrs. Lauren in the sort of grand, Fifth Avenue
mansion that might beft a Ralph Lauren ad, we
heeded her request and photographed her where
she feels most comfortableat work.
Pedigreed, poised young women often take on
worthy causes, but LBL is so fercely impassioned by
the cause of feeding children through the UN World
Food Program that we momentarily forgot her
swishy roots. In American Beauty, Daisy Prince
speaks to Mrs. Lauren about married life, childhood
visits to the White House, and how shes making
philanthropy more accessible.
Earnest, perhaps, but it happens to the best of
us. After spending the day with Mrs. Lauren and
hearing about her strategic partnerships with
brands like Clarins, were persuaded that shes not
simply another ingnue donning a dress to hit the
beneft circuit. Adding Mrs. Lauren to the dynasty
might well be the best thing to happen to Ralph
Lauren since the dawn of the polo logo. Well done,
David.
In Harry Benson Takes Manhattan, the irascible
lensman looks back at some of the iconic moments
hes captured on flm. From Truman Capotes Black
and White Ball to the Beatles engaged in a pillow
fght, Mr. Benson has been at the front lines of social
history for the past fve decades. Leigh Crandall
reports on his wild ride from Glasgow to the Upper
East Side.
But were not merely interested in boldfaced
names at NYO. In Fresh Paint, I had the pleasure
of scoping out Colossal Medias Williamsburg
studios to see exactly how two tattooed
entrepreneurs turned the old-fashioned craft of
hand-painting billboards into a major commercial
enterprise. On a cold November day, we stood in
their cavernous work space and checked out the
tools of their traderigging, paint, all-weather gear,
and some serious cajones.
Its just the sort of mix of beautiful creatures and
big ideas well be bringing you with each issue.

The glossy lime-green doors of Chris
Burchs fagship emporium swing
outward onto Spring Street, beckon-
ing Soho shoppers into its loud-but-
ladylike interior. Seemingly a younger
remix of the posh-resort casual look
refned by Tory Burch (Mr. Burch's
ex-wife) C. Wonder profers shrunken
navy blazers, cable-knit sweaaters,
and suede driving moccasins in vivid,
not-so-ironic hues. The housewares
section is a veritable sensory overload
for those on the hunt for a hostess
gift: ikat-patterned teacups abound.
Several items (cheese boards, wine
stoppers, stationery) already feature
monograms, but thanks to C. Wonders

emblazon their initials on everything
from yoga mat bags to charm bracelets.
Visitors can even customize lighting
and music in each dressing room. Fans

Originally founded in 1895 by Cassel
Goorin, who sold hats from a horse cart on
the cobblestone streets of Philadelphia, the
newest outpost of Goorin Brothers is rich
with nostalgia. The strains of Eve Boswell
crooning Someone to Watch Over Me
bounce pleasantly o of the shops salvaged
tin ceilings. Rows of fedoras, cloches, and
caps line the dark wood shelves. Ties and
gloves are displayed on vintage typewrit-
ers, antique tin boxes, and wooden spools,
while purposefully distressed gilt frames
hold sepia-tone photos of handsome
millinery-mad youths. Fans of the stores
bygone vibe can channel it with its latest
hat collection, Peekaboo, including pin-
striped fedoras and duckbills, asymmetri-
cal wool-felt cloches, and schoolboy caps
inspired by 1940s New York. A more mod-
ern take includes graphic at-brimmed
ball caps from the newly released 1333
Minna line, featuring original patterns
from collaborations with urban tattoo and
gra ti artists.

s the weather grows colder, many
New Yorkers experience a compul-
sion to celebrate the fair apple.
They wonder over expensive,
locally grown Honeycrisps and Crispins at the
neighborhood farmers market, are lured by
the charms of hot cider at the cofee shop, and
even resort to leaving the city for a pick-your-
own apple adventure, desperate for a close
encounter with the rustic fruit in its natural,
non-cosmopolitan habitat.
Thankfully, there is now an easier way to
celebrate the fruit (and it involves alcohol!
And cured pork!). Tertulia, the new Spanish
eatery from Seamus Mullen, who won acclaim
for his tapas at Boqueria, has been one of the
most universally praised openings in recent
months. Its been lauded for Mr. Mullens
delicious, hearty fare and farm-chic dcor.
Unlike some of its lesser neighbors in the hit-
or-miss N.Y.U. dining zone, Tertulia doesnt
push cloying sangria and plates of barely aged
Manchego. Rather, its modeled after the cider
houses of Asturias, a rugged region in north-

western Spain, and the areas pungent cider
is on tap behind the bar. Youll need a glass, or
three, to while away what is likely to be a long
wait for a table, perhaps while pretending not
to stare at celebs like Jay-Z and Beyonc and
Gwyneth and Chris, who visited the restau-
rant in September.
L
ong waits and celebrity sightings
aside, Tertulia stays true to its
Asturian inspiration with a truly
down-to-earth vibe. The house cider
is the Trabanco, a fat, humble brew poured
in a thin stream from a hulking wooden cask
behind the bar into a simple tumbler and
served not chilled but slightly cooler than
room temperature. Its the classic Asturian
cider and something that takes me back to
being in Spain, says Mr. Mullen. A perfect
balance of elegance and funk. The Trabanco
is equally transporting for Gil Avital, the
restaurants managing partner and beverage
director, who talks fondly of a research trip
he and Mr. Mullen took to Spain to absorb the
cider culture frsthand, even breaking out his
trusty iPhone for a slideshow. He notes local
traditions, like pouring a bit of cider onto the
ground to return it to Mother Earth and to
clean the side of your glass in the process for
(slightly) more sanitary sharing with amigos,
as is customary. But Mr. Avital cautions that
the Trabancos unique funk can be slightly
challenging for an American palette. Unlike
American ciders, which are usually made
from edible apples, Spanish cider is typically
made from crabapples and tastes drier and
less fruity as a result.
Those who fnd it tough to take on its own
can, and should, order some of Mr. Mullens
fare, much of which is especially suited to the
cider, like the Nuestras Patatas, the chefs
deceptively simple take on that old tapas
bar standby. The potatoes are cooked three
timesfrst blanched, then fried at a low temp,
then fried at a high temp just before serving
and profered up deliciously crispy and spicy,
drizzled with aioli. Its a perfectly balanced
combination with the Trabanco, says Mr.
Mullen. More potato artistry can be had in
the form of the Tosta Huevo Roto y Jamn
Ibrico, a toast topped with a crushed egg,
potato, and that glorious cured Spanish ham,
which is integral to much of the menu. Like
the patatas, its fairly rich, and the ciders acid-
ity nicely cuts through it. If youre [drinking
it] between bites, you want to eat more, says
Mr. Avital.
Also worth trying is the Poma urea ($12
glass/$46 bottle), the Champagne of the cider
oferings, according to Mr. Avital. Delicate
and sparkling, its served in a stemmed glass
and, like the classic French bubbles, is fer-
mented in the bottle. Its not altogether void of
the Trabancos lovable kick; its just a bit more
refned. Its perfect to sip on with some of Mr.
Mullens lighter fare, like Mejillones Bravos a
La Sidra, mussels studded with hunks of ba-
con and cooked in a bit of the Trabanco cider.
Looking around the bar at Tertulia, its
clear that the cider-drinkers are in the
minority, but that minority is growing. Most
of the 30-something patrons sip wine (also
available from the tap) or cocktails. But the
intrepid give the Trabanco a try, order bottle
after bottle of the Poma urea for the table at
dinner, or sample a local brew from the Finger
Lakes Eves Cidery, ofered as part of New
Yorks frst-ever Cider Week. Is cider going to
surpass wine or beer? Probably not, admits
Mr. Avital, who frst fell in love with the stuf
working at the late Savoy years ago. But when
theyre willing to try it, they love it.

S
he was a product of the whole
Hollywood star system, where
these actresses were larger than
life, says Louis Webre of Doyle
auction house. He isnt speaking about Lind-
say Lohan, ScarJo, or any of the other starlets
who frequent todays tabloids, but rather one
of Hollywoods most original divas, the one
and only Joan Crawford.
While most Hollywood history bufs are
afutter over the upcoming sale of Elizabeth
Taylors jewels, over 70 lots belonging to Ms.
Crawford have quietly crept up to the auction
block to be sold in early December. From
personal letters and contracts to jewelry,
furs, and awards, the auction boasts items
that ofer a view through the keyhole into Ms.
Crawfords tumultuous career.
After momentarily draping myself in one of
Ms. Crawfords many furs (this one was fox), I
began to work through the amassed memora-
bilia. The yellowed edges of letters from Ms.
Crawfords personal correspondence spoke
to a certain glamour thats been lost in our
iPad-centric world. Letters to the actress from
Katharine Hepburn, Laurence Olivier, and
Lord Mountbatten had been carefully fled
and stored away in folders, awaiting their bids.
One was a handwritten note from actor
Cesar Romero, famed for his role as the Joker
on the original Batman television series. You
asked me about the plants and what I fed
them to make them grow, he scribbled to Ms.
Crawford. By now you probably guessed I pee
on them, and so help me it works, the missive
reads.
Born Lucille LeSueur (literally Lucille
the sweat, in French), Ms. Crawfords ofcial
birth date is unknown. A duplicate of the ac-
tresss birth certifcate, which claims she was
born in 1908, will be among the lots auctioned
this December, although its authenticity is
more than suspect. They didnt invent birth
certifcates until I think 1908, explains
Charlotte Taylor, Doyles art director. All of
the actors of that day, all of a sudden everyone
was born in 1908. They were trying to prove
they were younger, she explains.
Working her way from fapper to full-
fedged Hollywood star, the hardscrabble,
cheek-bone-endowed Ms. Crawford was a key
fgure in Hollywoods Golden Era. Bursting
onto the big screen in the 1920s, Ms. Crawford
signed with mega-studio Metro Goldwyn
Mayer. By the end of the 1930s, however, it
seemed her star had faded. In 1943, MGM un-
ceremoniously dropped Ms. Crawford, buying
her out of a contract for $100,000.
It was only after being cut from MGM
that the actress staged a forceful comeback,
starring in Mildred Pierce for Warner Bros.
in 1945 and earning an Oscar for best actress.

39 December2011
This winter, the document fnalizing Ms.
Crawfords termination from MGM will go
under the gavel as well. Thats a pivotal piece
of paper, Mr. Webre explains excitedly. Had
she been still at MGM perhaps she wouldnt
have done Mildred Pierce, he adds.
In 1969, John Wayne presented Ms.
Crawford with the Golden Globe for lifetime
achievement, another jewel in her Hollywood
crown. The trophy, topped with a Grecian
fgure whose hands are outstretched in vic-
tory, is expected to fetch between $3,000 and
$5,000 at auction this December.
A contract for Ms. Crawfords appearance
on the Lucille Ball show proves particularly
intriguing. Signing the document, Ms. Craw-
ford had underlined a clause stating that she
would have access to a hairdresser. Although
she was evidently well coifed for her taping,
the show didnt go terribly well, according to
Edward Ripley-Duggan, Doyles resident auto-
graphs expert. I suspect there was something
of a clash of personalities, but Lucille Ball
accused her of being drunk on set, Mr. Ripley-
Duggan explains.
Frequently clashing with her co-stars and
refusing to be outshined, Ms. Crawford was
one of the original Hollywood prima donnas.
Starring in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?
across from her arch nemesis Bette Davis,
she fought bitterly against her rival for equal
footing. When Ms. Davis fell ill, it seems that
Ms. Crawford attempted to secure time of
for herself as well. A tersely worded note from
the flms lawyers, however, delineated her
contractual obligations in no uncertain terms.
We have been advised by Miss Davis physi-
cian that she will be able to work on Monday
September 10, 1962, at which time your ser-
vices will also be required. Scrawled across
the top in Ms. Crawfords hand, the words
Hold for me are emphatically underlined.
Marrying the CEO of Pepsi, Alfred Steele,
Ms. Crawford soon added the role of business-
woman to her rsum. Traveling with her
husband (all the while wearing the many furs
gifted to her), Ms. Crawford was an ambas-
sador for the brand and, after Steeles death,
became the frst woman to serve on the com-
panys board of directors. A series of original
photographs showing Ms. Crawford touring
a Pepsi manufacturing plant indicate that
she pursued her second career with the same
drive and determination that propelled her
to stardom. The ruby-encrusted Pepsi bottle
broach her husband gave her only sweetened
the deal.
While perhaps not groundbreaking in
the scheme of history, these small personal
efects, fragments of contracts, and anecdotal
annotations help piece together the character
of one of flms frst golden girls. She was very
driven, Mr. Ripley-Duggan explains. That is
one of the things that comes out of this stack
of papers and correspondence and everything
else She had powerful will to succeed and
also a will that things be done on her terms. I
think that was very much part and parcel of
her character, he says tenderly.

DIORCOUTURE

What does the name Dior conjure? Is it a
black and white image of a Parisian blue blood
striding through the Tuileries in a sharply
tailored suit? Or is your notion of Dior a more
recent iterationthe decadent confections
designed by pirate-turned-pariah John Gal-
liano? No matter which Dior occupies your
fashion reveries, or what its future holds, any
clotheshorse is sure to be delighted by the
nostalgic work Dior Couture (Rizzoli, New
York, $115).
Lavishly shot photographs by Patrick
Demarchelier ll the decorative books pages,
representing an inspired selection of styles
from the fashion houses storied history. From
simple sheath dresses cut to perfection to
outrageous outts with, as editor Ingrid Sis-
chy puts it, enough scaolding inside them to
stand up on their own, its all achingly French

and reassuringly rareed. (An enormous full-
body look from 2001 piled high with fur, pom-
poms, gingham, zippers, beads, and more
most assuredly falls into the latter category.)
And then there are the fashion houses iconic
jackets, with those impossibly nipped-in
waists, topping everything from midcentury
midi skirts to voluptuously draped ball gowns.
The book is peppered with gossipy nuggets
collected in true Sischy style: Lynn Wyatt,
the one-of-a-kind fashion hall of famer from
Texas, talks shop; Victoire de Castellane,
Christian Diors original muse, bemoans the
computer age; and the projects stylist, former
Vogue Paris editor Carine Roitfeld, shares a
detail that will make any woman wistful for
the Dior of yesterday: At French Vogue, she
says, when her team shot models in Dior, they
had to pad the hips because otherwise the
girls dont ll the clothes.
THEMAPANDTHETERRITORY

Michel Houellebecq is dead. Or, rather,
the character Michel Houellebecq, in Michel
Houellebecqs book The Map and the
Territory (Kno Doubleday Publishing Group,
$16), is dead. In a knowing nod to his (many,
it must be said) detractors, Mr. Houellebecq
kills o his own character near the end of his
hotly anticipated new novel, which received
Frances prestigious Prix Goncourt earlier
this year. After his characters death, Mr.
Houellebecq goes so far as to share that hes
been buried at Montmartre, where hun-
dreds of fans visit his grave and declared
themselves shocked or at least profoundly
saddened [but] honor the memory of an im-
mense artist who will always be present in our
memories.
Its a narrative move the author certainly
knew would both rankle and tickle. One of the
most controversial writers in recent French
history, Mr. Houellebecq is as endishly
revered in certain quarters (see Prix Gon-
court, above) as he is execrated in others.
Described variously over the course of his
career as a racist, misogynist, peddler of smut,
and worse, Mr. Houellebecqs recent works
have actually found him moving away from
his misanthropic roots. Which brings us to the
relatively humanistic The Map and the Terri-
tory. The book is a moving bildungsroman and
a meditation on fame rolled into one, though
it remains, at its heart, a farce. The novels
main character, an artist named Jed Martin,
unwittingly nds fame and its accompanying
millions via pop cultural projects for which
he has no real passion. (What is a painting,
actually, he asks Houellebecq, after enlisting
his help on an exhibition, but a particularly
expensive piece of furniture?) But Jeds
surfeit of perspective is eventually sad, not
self-preserving, when lack of nerve leads to
loss of lovejust as, on an opposite arc, the
acerbic, unlikable Houellebecq nally nds a
modicum of happiness when he adopts a dog
and retires to the country.
What all this means for the famously
cantankerous Mr. Houellebecq remains to
be seen. (He did confess upon receiving the
Goncourt, Cest une sensation bizarre mais
je suis profondment heureux, meaning It
is a strange feeling, but it makes me deeply
happy.) And what of those very public ac-
cusations last year that the author plagiarized
passages of The Map and the Territory from
Wikipedia? He cleverlyor obnoxiously,
depending on your readthanks the crowd-
sourced encyclopedia in the credits.

THETENDERHOUR
OFTWILIGHT
If Richard Seaver were alive today, hed
most certainly throw himself one hell of a
book party. D.H. Lawrence, Jack Kerouac,
Henry Miller, William S. Burroughs, the
Marquis de Sade the controversy-courting
editor, at Grove, Viking, and nally his own
publishing house Arcade, brought so many
iconic authors into the American public eye
that its di cult to overstate his inuence on
stateside literature. But the true marvel of
his posthumous memoir, The Tender Hour of
Twilight: Paris in the 50s, New York in the 60s:
A Memoir of Publishings Golden Age (Farrar,
Straus and Giroux, $14), isnt in the countless
juicy anecdotesthough anyone who could
casually compare the personalities of Samuel
Beckett and Jean Genet clearly would have
stories to tell; its in the thoughtful, soft-lit
reections on and infectious delight he took in
the world around him, which goes a long way
toward explaining the extraordinary life he
lived.
Edited and presented by Mr. Seavers wife
of 55 years, Jeanette, the book begins during
the romantic years Mr. Seaver spent in Paris
completing a post-grad dissertation on James
Joyce at the Sorbonne. Thanks to an a liation
with the literary quarterly Merlin, he quickly
found himself editing the likes of Genet and
the wall-eyed Jean-Paul Sartre, as well as
a then-unknown writer who, it emerges, be-
came the great literary love of his life: Beckett.
And this is all before Mr. Seaver moved to New
York to work at Grove Press and went on to
publish just about every author to inspire a
book-burning from that moment on.
Time is not kind to the harried mind,
Mr. Seaver wrote in his introduction, lling
it each passing day with the detritus of the
moment, like silt at a rivers mouth slowly
covering the earlier levels and slyly recon-
stituting the terrain. Its a testament to
Mr. Seavers modesty that he deemed such a
caveat necessary: The tales herein feel like
treasures expressly manufactured to delight
later generations of lit fans.
CARSTENHLLEREXPERIENCE

Carsten Hller may have only recently
taken Gotham by storm, but as any regular
on the Basel-Frieze-Performa circuit could
attest, hes long been one of the most active
(and critically adored) presences on the
international art scene. In conjunction with
the artists perspective-challenging block-
buster exhibition at the New Museumto
enter which attendees tellingly sign not one,
but two liability waiversa group of art-world
heavies weigh in on the artists oeuvre in
the crisp, concise Carsten Hller: Experience
(Skira Rizzoli, $60). New Museum curator
Massimiliano Gioni details the attacks of
the heebie-jeebies and moments of panic
Mr. Hllers giant slides and ying machines
evoke; Moderna Museet director Daniel
Birnbaum applies a Freudian-Derridean
framework to the concept of delay in the
artists work; and scholar Dorothe Brill
explores the intersection of knowledge and
belief Mr. Hller plays with in his fascinating
living tableaux. Elsewhere, critical thinkers
indulge in playful digressionas when a group
of scholars and curators contemplate the phe-
nomenon known as Valeria (a nonsensical
battle cry that took over European hotspots
in the 90s), concluding that its genesis in Italy
can be explained only by Italians tendency to-
ward ironic conformity and to the widespread
availability of cheap white wine.
THINKINGFASTANDSLOW

There are pop psychologists like Malcolm
Gladwell (The Tipping Point) and Steven
D. Levitt (Freakonomics), and then theres
the granddaddy of them all: Nobel Prize in
Economics-winner Daniel Kahneman. Mr.
Kahnemans fascinating study of judgment
and decision-making, Thinking, Fast and Slow
(Farrar, Straus and Giroux, $15), challenges
the once-popular belief that humans deviate
from rationality only when their emotions get
in the wayposing instead the notion that we
think either fast (instinctively) or slow (logi-
cally) depending on which system our brain
deems most e cient. It may seem like a simple
idea, but its implications are vast. By intro-
ducing a language for thinking and talking
about the mind, as Mr. Kahneman puts it, he
creates a structure that can aid in everything
from risk assessment in business strategy
to assessing why hot streaks in baseball and
elsewhere are the stu of fantasy. Thinking,
Fast and Slow is one of those seminal books
that will pop into your mind every time a
tough decision places itself in your path; at
the very least, after reading it you will no
longer feel guilty about silencing an annoying
backseat driver when it comes time to make a
di cult turn.

THE princess grace
awards gala
In what was surely one of the glamorous events of the season (and among
the most regal), the Princess Grace Awards gala gave New York a fleeting
brush with Old World royalty. Newlyweds Prince Albert II and Princess
Charlene of Monaco descended upon the city for the charity event to
support the legacy of Princess Grace and her dedication to the arts. After
guests made their way past the blinding flashbulbs on the red carpet,
they were greeted inside by a cadre of waiters with bellinis at the ready.
The primary honoree of the evening, Dame Julie Andrews, schmoozed in
a cordoned-off VIP area with the royals and this years crop of bright-eyed
Princess Grace Award recipients, while model Petra Nemcova, Olivia
Palermo, and artist Jeff Koons sipped cocktails and circulated through the
silent auction. Guests were called to take their seats, and afterward Rufus
and Martha Wainwright serenaded guests with Something Good, the
classic tune from The Sound of Music. After dinner had been served, the
audience listened to a heartwarming introduction from Anne Hathaway
before a film reel of highlights from Dame Julies career was shown. Dame
Julie then took the stage, graciously accepting her award as the star-struck
audience hung on her every word.

gala
An impressive group turned out for the Aid for AIDS gala. With
guests ranging from Alejandro Santo Domingo to Marc Jacobs,
the event brought together charitable types from around the globe.
Robert Duffy, the president of Marc Jacobs, and his husband,
Alex Cespedes, received an award for their dedication to the
organization. Guests enjoyed the bounty of appetizers: Feasting on
everything from crab cakes to caviar, an entire sushi bar, dim sum,
cheese, and hummus, the crowd was not wanting for sustenance.
With glasses of wine in hand, guests made their way through the
gallery where art for the silent auction was prominently displayed.
A sit-down dinner soon followed, after which guests hit the dance
floor to flaunt their salsa and samba moves.

fri ends of
blenheim palace
On a particularly dreary fall evening, appropriately reminiscent of
Londons perennial dampness, the great and the gray gathered for a
small dinner at Sothebys to raise money for Blenheim Palace. Despite
the weather, New Yorks philanthropic gang soon filled the room.
Alexandra Lebenthal, Jeff and Liz Peek, Barbara Bancroft, Jonathan
and Somers Farkas, Jamee Gregory, Cece Cord, and Prince Dimitri
of Yugoslavia sipped glasses of white wine as they greeted one
another in the gallery. The guests of honor, the Duke and Duchess
of Marlborough, greeted their friends genially near the entrance. The
Dukes particularly gruff guffaw drew affectionate (and occasionally
alarmed) gazes from around the room as he laughed with his American
acquaintances. Everybodys so kind, the Duke drawled with his well-
bred British accent. Its a lovely party. Everyone seems to be enjoying
themselves. Thats the important thing.

In the wake of Elizabeth Taylors death,
much of the world was asking one weighty
question: What will become of her storied
jewelry collection? Claimed by company
officials to be the most important jewelry
collection ever to be sold by Christies,
the embarrassment of riches will go
under the gavel this December. Olivia
Chantecaille, Marina Rust, Jamie Tisch,

an exclusive luncheon to preview the

I
f Ralph Lauren had taken pen to draft-
ing paper and designed the perfect
wife for his youngest son, David, he
could not have sketched anyone more
on message than Lauren Bush.
When news broke of the couples engage-
ment in 2010, tabloid hacks smirked over the
possibility that she might be called Lauren
Lauren. Lauren Bush Lauren, the name she
has chosen to use instead, seems to itch for a
monogram. It speaks to the synergy between
Ralph Laurens fashion house, which profers
a vision of refned American luxury, and the
Bush family, who, with their roots in New
England and Texas, are their very own brand
of toothy Americana personifed.
You can just about see the perfectly weath-
ered fag rippling in the distance.
The granddaughter of the 41st president of
United States and the niece of the 43rd, Mrs.
Lauren, is, in the fesh, the stuf of a Bruce
Weber pictorial. As she arrives at her Meat-
packing District ofces to be photographed for
NYO Magazines December issue, her thick,
wheat-color hair frames a makeup-free face.
Polite without a hint of Southern artifce, Mrs.
Lauren takes the four-hour shoot in stride,
clearly glad that its at the FEED Projects
loftlike ofces, where she can highlight her
philanthropic work rather than her pedigree.
As the shoot proceeds, Mrs. Lauren, 27,
seems utterly unselfconscious about her looks
and yet highly conscious of the message the
pictures will telegraph. As she tries on several
inky-black Ralph Lauren evening gowns, she
approaches the task with intense profes-
sionalism rather than girlish glee. She asks
to see exactly how the images will be cropped
to incorporate the FEED logo on a clutch and
selects clothes from labels that have support-
ed her charity, like Cynthia Rowley. Without
saying so, Mrs. Lauren is obviously keen to
distance herself from any notion of privileged,
society silliness and to stress the importance
of her day job.
Her mother, Sharon Bush, an elfn fgure
in a tight pink sweater, black jeans, and heels,
hovers nearby, asking about the dresses
and making sure that her accommodating
daughter isnt sufering too much as the result
of a seasonal cold.
Even though she has the face and certainly
the lanky fgure for it, Mrs. Lauren is not
often to be found in ball gowns; these days
she says shes been too busy expanding her
charitable company, which designs and sells
handbags, clothing, and other products to
beneft child hunger-prevention programs
worldwide. FEED was inspired by a trip Mrs.
Lauren took to Guatemala with the UNs

Despite all the bowing and scraping around
her, Mrs. Lauren seems to reject the air-
kissing, moneyed Manhattan scene. She is
clearly not averse to putting on a dress if the
occasion demands it, but she really seems
happier in her own eco-friendly line, Lauren
Pierce. For our talk, shes slipped into ballet
fats and, from her latest collection, a pretty
gray blouse and tulip-shape skirt thats made
from sustainable wool. She looks gamine and
French rather than crunchy and collegiate in
the ensemble.
Despite growing up in Houston, her voice
bears no trace of a Texas accent. Her summers
were spent at the Bush family compound in
Kennebunkport, Maine, where she would run
around and play her favorite sport, tennis,
with her 14 Bush cousins. Her grandparents
presided over the family circus. Mrs. Lauren
describes her grandfather as gentle and
strong and her grandmother, Barbara, who
she says is more spontaneous and forceful,
as the head of the family.
Mrs. Lauren frst came into the public eye
as a debutante at the Crillon Ball in Paris in
2000a French paper heralded the arrival of
Une Texane Paris. She wore a vintage Dior
dress and a Mikimoto pearl tiara. Escorting
her to the ball was Louis de Bourbonthe
man who would have been king of France had
there been no French Revolution. Floating
around a fancy hotel with would-be royalty
may seem incongruous with veggie-loving
humanitarianism, but Mrs. Lauren is quick to
laugh of her haute couture moment. I was 16
and it was kind of a random life experience,
she says. With her knack for making a sows
ear into a silk purse or, in this case, a silk purse
into meals for hungry children, proceeds from
this years Crillon Ball are slated to beneft
FEED.
Her modeling career seems to have evolved
into a convenient conduit for publicity for
FEED. Mrs. Lauren began modeling in high
school after a family friend suggested it to
her mother. I was a shy child and I think my
mother thought it would give me confdence
and some experience outside of the Texas
bubble. I never missed school for it and it was
always clear that I was going to quit modeling
after school and do a job I really liked. But I
love fashion and had the opportunity to intern
with Zac Posen and worked with some great
photographers. Now, I only model for FEED,
she says emphatically.
World Food Program (WFP) in the summer of
2004, when she was still an undergraduate in
college. The idea behind FEED was to create
a consumer product thats afordable so that
young people can purchase one for themselves
and for their friends and know exactly where
their money is going. While her company is
technically for proft, the burlap and cotton
bags are sold wholesale to stores for $45, of
which $20 is given to charity. She formed her
company, FEED Projects LLC, in 2007 and
since then has developed other accessories
and formed canny strategic partnerships with
fashion-forward corporations like Clarins,
Whole Foods, and Cond Nast. To date, the
organization has donated over $6 million and
60 million meals to the WFPs school feeding
program.

ut Mrs. Lauren is happy to have
put her modeling days behind
her, and says that my personal-
ity is such that if I never took
another picture, Id be happy.
For college, she headed to Princeton
because I knew I wanted to try another area
of the country and Princeton was nice enough
to let me in. While attending college she
joined the exclusive eating club Ivy (Gosh,
that sounds very uppity, doesnt it? But it was
nice to feel a part of a community), majored
in anthropology, minored in photography and
wrote a 150-page thesis on the plight of impov-
erished women in developing countries.
She was still an undergraduate at Princeton
when she met her future husband, David,
while waiting for a cab on the street outside
the Met Ball. They dated for over seven years
and got married on Labor Day in front of 200
guests at the Laurens ranch in Colorado. They
honeymooned at the luxe San Pietro Hotel on
the Amalf Coast.
Though her husband is 39, the age difer-
ence doesnt seem to be a consideration. She
laughs of suggestions that he might be the
instructor in the relationship. That sounds
kind of creepy, she says. Hes really youthful
and I guess Im a little more mature for my age,
so it all evens out. When I suggest that shes
a little on the young side to get married, she
says, It depends on what part of the country.
In Texas Im an old maid, but Im the frst of
my New York friends to go.
As newlyweds, the Laurens do the same
things that most busy New Yorkers do on
the weekendssleep in, eat brunch with her
cousin Barbara at Westville or Morandi, and
go for the occasional yoga class or workout. I
love to sleep in and cook Im a vegetarian so
I make a lot of vegetables and I love quinoa,
kale, and lots of tofu. How about David? Mrs.
Lauren gives a little smile. Hes vegetarian
when hes with me, part-time. Marriage, she
says, hasnt changed much about their lives.
Not really. We havent moved nothing too
life-changing in that sense. Its been less than
two months. There is a diference, just the
titles, wife, husband. But there is nothing that
you can put your fnger on. Its just been busy.
Mrs. Lauren has, in fact, been so busy
that she hasnt gotten plans for the holidays
sorted out just yet. While she didnt convert
to Judaism for her husband, she says we
respect Hanukah and we have a menorah. As
for her own holiday traditions, Mrs. Lauren
reminisces about Christmases spent as a child
at the White House. They decorated so im-
maculately. I remember that they used to have
a giant gingerbread house which was the size
of this banquette, she says, stretching her
thin arms wide. One of the White House ush-
David is really youthful and
I guess Im a little more mature

ers used to strategically hide cookies behind it
for us because he didnt want us picking of the
cookies on the bottom, which Im sure would
have toppled the whole thing.
Before Mrs. Lauren can concentrate on
decorating, shes got to think about her fourth
annual FEED-Raiser, which will be held on
December 14 at Urban Zen. Its really fun.
There will be music and drinks and shopping.
We sell FEED Projects [items] but we also in-
vite other vendors who have some kind of give
back element to the products they make. Al-
though there will be a VIP area, Mrs. Lauren
assures me it is there only as a mechanism to
raise more cash and not as a celebrity holding
pen. Anyone can buy a ticket and [exclusivity]
is completely anti what we do. On December
1, she also launches the 12 days, 12 ways
campaign on her website, FeedProjects.com.
Inspired by the idea of an advent calendar,
each day there will be a new reveal on the
website of a diferent FEED product you can
buy from partners like Judith Leiber, Clarins,
and Links of London.
As our talk draws to a close, Im unexpect-
edly disarmed. Mrs. Lauren has that rare
quality present in only the fnest hostesses,
politicians, and concubines of leaving you
with the impression that she is an open book.
Only later, when listening to the recording
of our conversation, do I realize that shes
revealed very little, and thats just as she
prefers it.

ou cant actually watch
our event, even if youre a
journalist or a photogra-
pher, says Knut Frostad,
the Norwegian yachts-
man and CEO of the Volvo Ocean Race, which
set of from Alicante, Spain, on November 5.
Pity, as it means youll be missing some of the
most hair-raising man-against-the-sea action
the sports world has to ofer.
As legend has it, the idea for the Volvo
Ocean Race was conceived in 1971 over a
couple of beers in a smoky English pub by
Colonel Bill Whitbread of the famed brewing
family and Admiral Otto Steiner of the Royal
Naval Sailing Association.
The two British sailing afcionados imag-
ined a grand, around-the-world sailing regatta
in which vessels crewed by teams of daring
yachtsmen would follow the old square-
rigger trading routes in triennial crusades
to circumnavigate the globe. Almost four
decades after the inaugural race in 1973, it has
maintained a perch alongside the Americas
Cup as one of the premier events in competi-
tive sailing.
Since assuming his position as CEO of
the race, Mr. Frostad has been attempting,
through a handful of new rules, technologies,
and course tweaks, to reduce costs, increase
viewership, and make participation a more
viable investment for sponsors in the current,
belt-tightening economic climate. His aim?
With Volvo having already associated itself
with the world-class sporting event, to lure
other deep-pocketed sponsors to do the same.
Throughout the races storied history, the
essential elements have remained the same.
Every three years, crewmembers brave the
extreme conditions of a perilous eight-month
adventure at sea as they vie for the glory that a
frst-place fnish brings. At the same time, the
race has moved to keep up with the times.
Originally dubbed the Whitbread Round
the World Race, the regatta now bears the
name of its corporate owner, Volvo, which
purchased the event in 2001. Whereas crews
were once made up of unpaid, adventure-
seeking private citizens, they are now
carefully stocked with elite professional
athletes. The boats themselves have evolved
in radical fashion. Sailing enthusiasts of the
1970s could scarcely have imagined the sexy,
streamlined, 70-foot, carbon-fber yachts
racing today and the 40-knot speed at which
they can cut through the water. Perhaps the
most interesting changes, though, have come
in recent years at the hands of Mr. Frostad and
his team.
In spite of its briny backstory, today the
Volvo Ocean Race is a decidedly commercial
enterprise. Teams depend on sponsor-
ship funds for salaries, equipment, and the
extensive research and development that go
into designing these hugely expensive racing
machines. In sailing, sponsorships were tra-
ditionally established in a haphazard manner,
when business executives who happened to be
sailing enthusiasts would choose to sponsor
a boat in their favorite race. The image that
propelled corporate participation was under-
standably appealing: a racing yacht heeling
over hard, its mast so close to the water that
possible disaster seems to loom just inches
away; and there, on the side of the billboard-
broad, gleaming hull, is the companys bold,
emblazoned logo.
T
odays sponsors require assur-
ance that they will see returns
on their investments. As Dave
Fuller, a sports marketing
consultant and editor of
YachtRacing.biz, explains, It used to be that
a CEO who fancied sailing gave a nod and
wink, wrote a big check, and sat back and said,
Yup, thats my companys name of the side
of that boat. The global fnancial crisis has
changed that paradigm, and now CEOs and
chairmen need to justify spending tens of mil-
lions of dollars on a boat race, which means
theyve got to make it work from a marketing
point of view.
To that end, the Volvo Ocean Race began
working with the Boston Consulting Group as
a strategic partner in 2008. We picked apart
the whole event and benchmarked it to all
other sports properties to see what could be
learned, where we can go, and how far we can
go, says Mr. Frostad.
The frst step was to increase the exposure
of the event. As it takes place thousands of
miles ofshore, the race is inherently un-
watchable. To solve this problem, Mr. Frostad
and his team have installed high-defnition
cameras on each vessel that will capture the
action and transmit it in real time back to
a media center via connections furnished
by Immarsat, a satellite communications
provider. Each boat will also host a designated
media crew member tasked with capturing
footage, blogging, and conducting interviews
with the crew, but who will not be allowed to
participate in the actual sailing. This content
will then be made available on VolvoOcean
Race.com and selected television networks.
As a journalist, a photographer, or fan, you
can watch the start [of the race], but then the
boats disappear on the horizon, only to appear
again 20 days later on a diferent continent.
So we took the position a few years ago that
we needed to focus heavily on technology that
can help bring the story from the boatinside
and outside the cabinto shore ... Its very
much our challenge, explains Mr. Frostad.
He understands that this is a competition
that occupies a certain niche within the world
of sports, one that will likely never be headline
news on national networks. Still, the main
objective is to grow the audience. While there
are other sports that will always have a wider
fan base than sailing could ever hope to, the
Volvo Ocean Race group believe that they will
only expand their reach from here.
This time around, the race organizers are
producing two weekly video programs: one
that concentrates on the nitty-gritty of the
sailingwho is winning, what strategies are
being used, etc.and another that highlights
as the volvo ocean race
begins its 11th madcap tour of the globe this fall,
chris clemans goes inside the big business
of sponsored sailing.

impossible.
It is with the second of the two video
programsthink reality TV on a racing
yachtthat organizers see the most potential
for growth. They have actually gone so far as
to hire one of the head cameramen from Dead-
liest Catch to train the media crewmembers to
capture dramatic, compelling storylines. In
the end, the goal is simple: to ofer sponsors a
broader platform for marketing their brands,
thus making sponsorship a more attractive
investment.
Another tactic is The Game, an online,
interactive experience that allows fans to
virtually captain their own boats and partici-
pate in the race over its eight-month duration.
Rankings and statistics are intermittently
posted throughout, and prizes are awarded at
the end. The online game is really interest-
ing from an audience point of view, explains
Mr. Fuller. Last time around they had about
the backstory of the people on board, includ-
ing the more thrilling and grueling aspects of
this wild odyssey across the seas.
The potential for drama is limitless. Don
Wallace, former editor of Yachting magazine,
recalls sitting in his ofce during past races,
taking phone calls from haggard sailors in
Cape Town and Auckland. They were broken
men almost weeping with fatigue and the pain
of having their last six months of seagoing
torture turned to naught because of a jammed
masthead ftting, he says. There were stories
of boats doing three consecutive 360-degree
rollovers in the Roaring Forties, coming up
mastless. Tales of living like an undersea coal
miner in a 70-foot-long aluminum tube, in
those days, with a single toilet in the bow and
the walls sweating condensation (even when it
was freezing outside) as hissing seawater shot
in from rivet holes. [Its] hard to sleep in a rac-
ing boat. Even closing your eyes [is] practically

220,000 players, and I imagine it will be much
bigger this time. And the game is in real time.
You make decisions, you get weather infor-
mation, and, if you dont wake up in time to
change your course, you run into the coast of
Africa and lose eight hours. Last time around
there were people around the world who
formed syndicates, and if someone in America
went to sleep, someone in Australia would
wake up and sail the boat for fve hours, and
when they went to sleep someone in Europe
would get up and sail the boat. Its a crazy little
sort of subculture of how people interact with
the racing.
Beyond their eforts to enhance and enliven
the coverage of the event, the Volvo Ocean
Race execs have implemented a schedule that
includes in-port races at Alicante, at Galway,
Ireland (the fnal destination), and at each of
the eight stopover locations in between. These
are brief racesabout an hour in lengththat
cover short distances close to shore. Although
the in-port races account for only 18 percent of
the total race in terms of points, they are vital
from a marketing point of view in that they
allow fans the opportunity to watch the boats
machinations in the fesh and mingle with the
crew and other fans in temporarily construct-
ed race villages. Involving 10 countries across
fve continents, such international exposure is
a key selling point when it comes to attracting
sponsors.
What distinguishes this race is this lever-
aging of the stopovers, explains Mr. Fuller.
The Volvo Ocean Race allows brands to have
activity in Spain, have activity in China, have
activity in Abu Dhabi, have activity in all of
these markets across the globe, and thats
defnitely unique in the sailing world.
The exploration of new markets has been a
clear goal. The 2008-09 race featured its frst
stopover in China. We have a very long-term
plan in China, says Mr. Frostad. A lot of
people think that everything in China is gold,
and money is raining from the sky, but it isnt.
For us, its purely about building an audience.
We discovered last time we went to China that
the Chinese didnt really have a big interest in
the technical aspects of sailing, but they fully
understood the concept of an exciting race
across the ocean.
This year, for the frst time ever, the race
also boasts a fully Chinese-sponsored boat,
Team Sanya. There are new stopovers as well,
among them Abu Dhabi. Its certainly the
frst time any around-the-world sailing race
has ever been to the Emirates, explains Mr.
Fuller. So that brings in a new audience as
well.
But audiences are of little avail if companies
balk at the stratospheric costs of entering a
boat. To date, there is no limit on how much a
sponsor is allowed to spend in the pursuit of a
win. In races past, it was common practice for
deep-pocketed teams to spend upwards of $60
million. The biggest cost-driver was the in-
controvertible advantage of having two boats.
There were stories of boats doing three
consecuti ve 360-degree rollovers in the
Roaring Forties, coming up mastless.

With two boats, teams can race one against
the other during the R&D stage, measuring
the comparative results of each minor design
tweak. But, as Mr. Frostad explains, a newly
implemented one-boat limit per teamalong
with over 100 other new rules that dictate
details as small as the number of sails a team
may purchase for sailing purposeshas cut
the amount that top teams are spending by
about 70 percent. You cant stop people
from being stupid and spending money thats
not going to take them anywhere, says Mr.
Frostad. But you can stop them from gaining
from it, and that was my ambition.
The new regulations have leveled the play-
ing feld. While there are only six boats in this
years race (organizers admit that the ideal
feld would be around 10), its widely agreed
that any of the contenders could win it all. Not
only have the new measures dramatically low-
ered the cost of sponsorship across the board,
they have lowered the cost of winning the
race, which, after all, is the outcome that will
deliver by far the most return on investment
for sponsors. When asked if these business-
minded innovations are new to this edition of
the race, Mr. Frostad exclaimed, Its new to
sailing. Its new to the sport! For us, reduc-
ing the cost of winning has been absolutely
essential. The sponsors of the teams are facing
difcult economic conditions now, all of them,
and they like it when they see that we are deal-
ing with these issues.
The events increasing exposure and wider
accessibility have served to shift the feld of
sponsors as well, from business-to-business
companies, like fnancial institutions and
high-end luxury brands, to more consumer-
oriented brands. This year, fve of the six
teams are sponsored by business-to-consum-
er brands, including Spanish footwear brand
Camper, French insurance provider Grou-
pama, and German sportswear brand Puma,
a favorite in this years race. [Puma] kind of
paved the way last time around when they
came in second place overall in 2009, he says.
Its a good sign for us, because it means the
event is starting to work for a bigger audience,
and it puts pressure on us to deliver and make
the media coverage work.
Puma CEO Franz Koch believes that
lowered costs and increased viewer exposure
have made the Volvo Ocean Race the perfect
sailing event for his brand. We wanted to
enter this category of sailing, he says. So
we needed some way to get out there and
increase the brand awareness, and the Volvo
Ocean Race was a great vehicle for us, because
it stops in markets all over the world, which
really helps us build a global audience for our
brand. Also, there have been a lot of changes
of late, and I think thats a smart idea. Lower
costs make it easier for new teams to join
and participate in this race. Having one boat
and fewer sails helps to make the race a more
feasible investment.
The 2008-09 edition of the race attracted
a cumulative television audience of 1.2 bil-
lion viewers who tuned in to 3,386 hours of
coverage. There were over four million unique
visitors to VolvoOceanRace.com, up 15.7
percent from the previous race, and 221,000
registered players of The Game. Mr. Frostad
and his fellow organizers expect all these
numbers to increase signifcantly for the 2011-
12 edition. If they are right, we shall soon fnd
out, as the six teams speed away from Alicante
and head south toward Cape Town. Whether
the crews feats of daring will induce car buy-
ers to pick Volvo or shoe buyers to select Puma
is yet to be seen. But this time when the boats
disappear over the horizon, they wont be far
from their sponsors intended markets.

Kennedy when he was assassinated in 1968,
and in the room with Richard Nixon when he
resigned in 1974. He has also photographed
every U.S. president from Eisenhower to
Obama, as well as countless celebrities. He
was appointed a Commander of the Order
of the British Empire in January 2009, and
has released 15 books of his photos, the most
recent being a collection entitled New York,
New York (powerHouse Books, $85), which
Ive come to discuss today.
But frst theres the matter of the particu-
larly famous picture hanging on the wall in
front of us, an oversize black and white print of
four young men (namely John, Paul, George,
and Ringo) engaged in a no-holds-barred
pillow fght at the George V Hotel in Paris.
I was in their room, Mr. Benson recalls,
in his wry Scottish lilt. And one of the Beatles
had said, That was some pillow fght we had
the other night. And I thought, well, thats
not a bad picture. But there was another
photographer from the Daily Mail there [at
that moment], and I wasnt about to make it
a team picture. Two nights later were back
in the room, late at night after the show and
it was just the Beatles and myself. And then
I
ts 10 a.m. on a crisp fall day when I
arrive at photographer Harry Benson
and his wife Gigis Upper East Side
apartment. The soft light of morning
illuminates the sophisticated living
room as a dachshund and a pug (Tillie and
Daisy, respectively) bark in unison and the fa-
mous lensman strolls inside from the balcony,
clad in khakis. Mr. Benson and Gigi have a
practiced rapportshe the welcoming hostess
to his refreshingly frank curmudgeon. As
we talk he delivers one-liners about the dogs
(Youre an embarrassment! Ive never seen
such badness!) and the refreshments (Gigi,
Leighs very upset theres no tea!). But clearly
Mr. Benson adores his wife, who, he says,
does everything, and who also collaborates
on all of his projects.
Mr. Bensons pictures of subjects ranging
from Ronald Reagan to Andrew Wyeth to
Truman Capote adorn most of the walls of
their home, a small glimpse into a long and
highly successful photography career during
which Mr. Benson has documented some of
the biggest moments in U.S. history. He was
on the James Meredith march with Martin
Luther King Jr. in 1966, feet away from Bobby
Brian Epstein comes in to say, I Want to
Hold Your Hand is number one in America.
Great! Everyones happy. Then he comes in
about 10 minutes later, and says, Were on The
Ed Sullivan Show! Epstein left the room and
I said, How about a pillow fght? And they
all said yes, and then John Lennon said, No,
we dont want to do it. It would make us look
childish. And its time to look more mature.
And the rest go, Yeah, thats right. Then John
slips away and Paul is drinking a brandy. Then
John comes up and hits him in the back of
the head [with a pillow]. And that started the
whole thing.
Being on tour with musics most famous
foursome and eventually becoming an
internationally renowned artist himself
wasnt always what Mr. Benson imagined life
would hold. Born and raised in Scotland, he
left school at the age of 13 and worked odd jobs
for several years, eventually enrolling in the
Glasgow School of Art. I wasnt that good, he
says matter-of-factly. You cant be good at art.
Youve to be great at it. Its not a thing that one
can be mediocre at. Thats the way Ive always
thought about it. I was more interested in play-
ing soccer. So I never went to any classes.

education instead came
through hands-on experi-
ence, and he began with
shooting weddings. The
thing about weddings is that they do discipline
you, he says with a chuckle. Its dead serious.
Meaning that at a wedding, people want a
nice picture of the bride, and a nice picture
of the bride and groom, and the families.
And they want it to look very proper. Other
jobs included work at a holiday camp, where
Mr. Benson took pictures of nobbly knee
contests, and a term at local weekly paper,
The Hamilton Advertiser, before heading to
Londons Fleet Street in the late 50s, where he
worked frst at the Daily Sketch and then at the
Daily Express.
One night Im home and the phone rings,
Mr. Benson remembers. And [my editor] says,
we would like you to go to Paris in the morning
with the Beatles. Theyre starting their frst
tour. At that point Id really only done news
and I was already going to Africa to do a big
story on the independence [movements]Im
a serious photojournalist! he says, laughing.
Of course I ended up going to Paris, though I
wasnt particularly happy in doing it. And the
frst night [the Beatles] opened in Fontaineb-
leaujust a little gig in a kind of church-hall-
ish place. But before they go on, I go back to my
car for another piece of equipment. Walking
back into the hall I hear, Close your eyes and
Ill kiss you and I thought, wow, I am on the
right story.
And so, with the Beatles, Mr. Benson came
to the U.S. for the frst time in 1964, arriving
on the tarmac of JFK Airport to the sound of
screaming fans. He felt an instant connec-
tion to the city. It doesnt let you down, he
explains of the attraction to New York. You
go other places, and theres just something
missing.
New York, New York focuses the citys
boldfaced names of past and present. Hilary
Geary Ross, a longtime friend of the Bensons'
who wrote the book's text, explains that the
idea for it was hatched over dinner in Palm
Beach, where both she and her husband and
the Bensons have homes.
Harry has all of these amazing photo-
graphs from his incredible career, says Mrs.
Geary Ross on the phone from London. He
had so many pictures of dynamic New Yorkers
starting in the 60s when he arrived. And we
thought it would be wonderful to fold in his old
photographs with new photographs and get
a wonderful history of New York. The result
is 320 pages of striking historical images of
politicos, tycoons, athletes, and artists (Barry
Diller, Barbra Streisand, and Andy Warhol
to name a few) combined with new images of

current-day fgures like Michael Bloomberg
and Diana Taylor, Julian Schnabel, and Matt
Lauer created specifcally for the book.
Mr. Benson continues to prefer a photojour-
nalistic approach to his work and looks for
spontaneity and an urgent feeling to images.
Speed isnt everythingits the only thing,
he explains. You want to move fast and you
dont want a lot of people with you. All my best
pictures have been taken when Ive been alone
[with the subject].
Harry is a true gentleman, adds Mrs.
Geary Ross. He has talent and his manner
puts people at ease very quickly. And hes
trained as a photojournalist, so he doesnt
take a long time. What more can you ask for?
Someone who is charming, quick, talented.
Its remarkable.
But Mr. Benson isnt overly precious about
his subjects or his work. As we fip through
his books together, hes open about whom he
enjoyed working with (and whom he didnt)
and is quick to poke fun at himself if he feels
like hes bragging. He admits that his opinion
of his work can change over the years, too.
Sometimes, years later, pictures take on a
whole new interest and become historic in a
wayit wasnt quite as dopey as you thought
it was.
One thing Mr. Benson truly cant abide,
however, is the hoopla of publicists and
managers and the back and forth thats

often the norm with celebrity photography
nowadays, and hes also not a fan of digitally
altering images. They always say photo-
graphs dont lie, but they do now because we
manipulate them. Theyre moving things
around and thats not photography. I dont
do it, he explains, sounding passionate, not
bitter.
He also remains unabashedly enthusiastic
about the city thats been his hometown for
decades now. For the book title, he considered
Well Take Manhattan, because Manhattan
is a great name, he says, a grin coming to his
face. Theres not a better name. Where do
you live? I live in Manhattan! It has a Ziegfeld
Follies quality to it. And that never left me,
that thing about New York. Its an exciting
place to be.

atrick Kane McGregor pauses for
a lunch break in a Soho parking
lot, taking swigs from a can of
Coke. Clad in a paint-fecked work
jumpsuit and a cap emblazoned
with the name of the Atlanta metal band
Mastodon, he checks out the half-fnished
mural dozens of feet above his head.
On an exterior wall of the Grand Street
building that houses the bar Lucky Strike, a
curious scene is taking shape, brushstroke by
brushstroke. A handsome, rugged man, the
afuent type who might gaze into the distance
in an L.L. Bean catalog, raises a glass of red
wine to toast a blonde wearing a camel-
color V-neck sweater and her rakish partner.
Behind these fgures, a trompe loeil suggests
the verdant vineyards of Bordeaux, just a vista
away from this corner of Wooster Street.
Such switches of context are all in a days
work for Mr. McGregor, a mural painter for
Colossal Media, a Brooklyn-based creative
agency that specializes in old-fashioned
painted murals, a craft that is now undergoing
a renaissance in spite of the demands of the
digital age. If you think youve seen the name,
you may well have, writ large beneath one of
its outsize photo-realistic creations, which
deck the walls of buildings from New York
to L.A., Austin to Minneapolis. The murals,
Colossal claims, account for 184,830,000 total
monthly impressions and counting.
Ive been doing this for 18 years, says Mr.
McGregor. Im like the old dog on the crew.
Mr. McGregor got his start painting murals
in Los Angeles under Art Pastunak, a master
painter for the California billboard company
Foster and Kleiser. That opportunity led him
to paint campaigns for Nike, emblazoning
buildings with giant images of Michael Jordan
A 2010 wAll for mArc jAcobs

soaring through the air.
As a painter for Colossal, he has been
heckled by hipsters on Bedford Avenue and
braved the winds that rush through the
canyons of midtown, scaling buildings to cre-
ate vivid painted ads that make their mark on
the urban landscape. When its cold, you just
wear layers, but Ive had some scary experi-
ences on a platform 20 stories up, when the
wind comes in and youre swung out over the
street. You look down and its like ant people
and little taxis. He shrugs of the hair-raising
experience and says, simply, Were like surf-
ers. You learn to check the Weather Channel
a lot.
His partner for the day, a younger guy
named Justin ODafer, laughs. Working in
Snowpocalypse last year was probably the
hardest. That was something.
Mr. McGregors preferred projects are the
ones for fashion designers. Colossal clients
include Marc Jacobs, Vans, and Barneys New
York. A lot of times, you get to spend the day
painting a gorgeous woman, he explains. But
hes also especially proud of the work Colossal
did for the 2009 opening of Dennis Hop-
pers exhibit Sign of the Times at Chelseas
Tony Shafrazi Gallery. For the showing,
Mr. McGregor and his colleagues worked
to create 12 billboard versions of Hoppers
photographs. Taking it to that level, says Mr.
McGregor, and trying to replicate an artists
work like that, was a real challenge. It had to
be total precision.

ounded in 2004 by friends Paul
Lindhal and Adrian Moeller,
Colossal Medias headquarters sit
just of of Bedford Avenue, Wil-
liamsburgs main drag. Although
the companys techniques are determinedly
old fashioned, a dot-com start-up vibe
prevails. A neon-lit fsh tank sits in a landing,
while cases of Red Bull are at the ready for
late nights. In a conference room, piles of slick
collateral showcase the work the company
has done for clients as disparate as MoMA and
Red Stripe.
Colossal Medias warehouse, signposted
by a wall that reads Sky High Murals, is
nearby, close to the East River waterfront.
Its a cavernous, 7,500-square-foot space
where rigging is stored, paint is mixed, and
the patterns that allow painters to replicate a
photographers work on an immense scale are
created. Crews work in New York and across
the country and beyond, fying wherever
theres a demand for their niche set of skills.
A collection of motorcycles in the warehouse
suggests that there are perks that come with
the growing business.
Mr. Lindhal, an intense, lanky fellow from
Portland, Ore., got his start as a billboard
painter in L.A. The [companies] were these
operations run out of pick-up trucks, he
recalls. There was always this sense that
hand-painted advertising was on the way out,
being replaced by vinyl. I didnt want to focus
on something that was so uncertain, so out
of my control. Teaming up with Mr. Moeller,
a Washington, D.C., native who had a back-
ground in marketing, the pair decided to sell
the idea of hand-painted murals as a craft. In
the companys early days, Mr. Lindhal painted
all of the walls himself, while Mr. Moeller
began to reach out to landlords to secure walls
in prime locations.
Savvy clients who aim to win over hard-to-
please, advertising-skeptical urbanites were
quickly convinced. Vans, Target, and booze
brands like Hendrick's Gin and Jack Daniels
were attracted by that handmade quality
of the pieces, says Mr. Lindhal. As work on a
street-level wall progresses over the course of
a week, the production itself often becomes
a performance, while a mural in a prime
position above the city could become an iconic
part of peoples day.
In 2009, for a campaign for Stella Artoiss
Ritual Project, which focused on the perfect
pour, Colossal painters transformed a wall
over Broome Street over 21 days, creating 19
frames that became a moving piece of city
art demonstrating the painstaking process
of pouring a glass of lager. Perfection has its
price, the billboard read. Stop-motion video

usual ad campaign into a viral phenomenon.
Stella accompanied its commission of the wall
with a documentary short called Up There,
which told the stories of the painters who had
created it and shed light on the so-called lost
art of hand-painted billboards.
These guys are some of the best in the
industry, says Cory Pearson, who works for
Haworth, an agency in Minneapolis, and who
has worked with Colossal on some Target
campaigns. When people saw what they did
with Stella, that wall was just brilliant, and it
told people that instead of slapping up some
vinyl, you could tell a diferent type of story
with something like this. Mr. Pearson says
his clients are drawn to the vivid and raw feel
of Colossals work, which lends something to
an image than vinyl cant.

Though a hand-painted mural costs some-
what more than vinyl would for a comparable
wall space, Mr. Pearson says that the premium
is worth it. When people walking by see the
work that goes into one of these pieces, even
if theyre resistant to the idea of an ad in this
particular spot, suddenly theres an interac-
tion there. They recognize that its art, too.
With a team of around 30 stafers, Colossal
Media trains its painters through a lengthy
apprenticeship program. While some of
the guys may look like down-on-their-luck
artists, they are in fact highly skilled artisans
who must deal with demanding clients in all
manner of conditions. For a 50,000-square-
foot ceiling mural at Lever House, says Mr.
Lindhal, shifts of Colossal artists worked 24
hours a day for 14 days straight.
Onerous deadlines may prevail, but the
crews still seem to maintain a noncorporate
feel, treading a fne line that allows them to
operate in cool neighborhoods without
seeming like sell-outs. Many of the guys
intersect with the world of grafti artists
and street artists and say theres a grudging
respect and overlap between the communi-
ties. A lot of those guys want to work with us,
says Mr. McGregor. Instead of going to jail for
painting a wall, you get paid for it.

ike the Smi people of the subarctic,
with their hundreds of words for
snow, the French have myriad terms
relating to places where people eat.
There are restos and cafs and brasseries and
bistros and bistrots, all of which are, under no
circumstances, ever to be confused. And then
there are the bouchons.
As he explains the diference, Franois
Latapie, a sociable Gaul in an olive-green
button-down shirt, sheds his many years
spent in New York and transforms before
your eyes. He is suddenly, inefably French. A
bouchon, as traditionalists have it, is a sort of
bistro, but only in Lyon. Everywhere else its a
bistro. Got it?
Bouchons, which were traditional inns
that rose up around the silk-trading districts
of Lyon, served substantial, cockle-warming
fare. Today, there is a group that certifes
these establishments, and verifes that their
menus are truly authentic. Tripe must be
served. LAssociation de dfense des bouchons
lyonnais will verify it. Only a handful of
would-be Lyon bouchons make the cut.
Needless to say, a New York bouchon is not a
bouchon at all, even if it serves tripe. We had
to have a burger, concedes Mr. Latapie, who
chuckles at the French obsession with classif-
cation, even as he reveals a certain admiration
for it. We are maybe 30 percent authentic,
he says. Nods to Lyonnaise cuisinelike the
braised lentilsprovide a dose of gruf French
realism alongside downtown foodie staples

like pumpkin ravioli with brown butter and
brunch fare beftting a hangover. Macaroni
gratin with braised kale, black trufe peelings,
and Boursin adeptly serves the latter purpose.
Lyon, in the old Caf de Bruxelles spot on
Greenwich Avenue, just below the din of 14th
Street, is decorated with vintage maps of
France. Booths are fanked by recreated rail-
way seats, while designers Roman & Williams,
who gave the Ace Hotel its weathered edge,
plastered the bathrooms with French comics
from the 1970s.
Its worlds away from the more rarefed
air that circulated at La Goulue on Madison,
which shuttered in 2009 after 36 years. Ruth
Reichl, writing in The New York Times, called
La Goulue one of those upscale bistros that
tastes much better if you speak French.
It served as a veritable daily canteen for a
mix of stars and powerbrokers, socialites and
the geriatric uptown gentry. Mr. Latapie says
that La Goulue will eventually come back
from the dead, once the right space is there.
He also recalls his trajectory there fondly.
Theres a time when you go, Mr. So and So,
Mrs. So and So, says Mr. Latapie, who worked
at the restaurant before he became a business

partner and his wife, Suzanne, became the
manager. After so many years, well, Im not a
kid anymore. You could still be formal but you
were on a frst-name basis. Mrs. Latapie now
owns Bistro Chat Noir on East 66th Street,
and Mr. Latapie is a regular there.
Its an understanding of the nuances of the
Upper East Sides rules of engagement that
gained Mr. Latapie respect in the industry and
in the upper echelons of Manhattans social
swirl. But its his zero bullshit policy that most
likely earned him a cadre of notable admir-
ers like ptissier Franois Payard, Bergdorf
Goodmans Linda Fargo, furrier Dennis
Basso, and Virgins Richard Branson.
The intention in his work, says Mr. Latapie,
is not taking it all so damn seriously. Here
his hands start to fy. I mean I have worked
in the restaurant business for a very, very long
time, and there are the times when someone
fies of, I mean, they get absolutely hysterical.
Why am I not sitting here, or why cant I have
this table?! I want to say to them, You know,
we are not saving lives here. What drives me
mad is when people go mad, he hufs. We are
just sitting down and having a meal. Lets not
go crazy. Its only food.
As such, the casual ambiance at Lyon
clearly suits him. I lived nearby, in the 1980s,
when this was pretty bad as an area, he
recalls. Caf de Bruxelles was, even then, an
institution, a beacon of bobo respectability in
the gritty area, but somewhere you could walk
into late at night, for a beer and some fries,
he says. I wanted Lyon to be that place as
well. Somewhere thats a destination res-
taurant, but that doesnt alienate the locals,
either.
Though some of his former patrons made
the trip once, in a Town Car, others have
come more regularly. Manhattanites territo-
rial natures do not faze Mr. Latapie, who lives
and entertains on the Upper West Side, spends
weekends riding his motorcycle out to places
like Brighton Beach and Greenpoint, and feels
at home in Paris as well as in New York, dining
with bigwigs or with his restaurant stafers.
He has, he confesses, become accustomed
to one Americanism that would make his
Parisian friends aghast. I now serve cheese
like a New Yorker, as a frst course. No one in
New York wants to eat all that heavy cheese at
the end of the meal, he says.
Lyons bouchon police would no doubt
swoon at the sight.

id you make it to the ladies
room? asks Ed Schoen-
feld, New Yorks reigning
Chinese food expert. Known
for his work on Chinatown Brasserie and,
most recently, the Eventi Hotels Food Parc,
hes also the creator of the buzzy new West
Village restaurant Red Farm, where Ive just
had dinner.
I had seen the facilities and loved them.
Sure, one shouldnt be too easily seduced by
restaurant-bathroom gimmickry, but the
restrooms at Red Farm boast a Toto Washlet,
the Japanese super-toilet with a lid that
automatically fips up when you enter and a
control panel on the wall to adjust the seat
temperature and water jets. Who knew going
to the loo could be so entertaining? At Red
Farm, even the fush is fun, Mr. Schoenfeld
says with gusto.
Theres plenty to amuse throughout the
rest of the restaurant, too. Set on the parlor
foor of a 1928 row house on Hudson Street,
Red Farms barnyard-chic interior is impos-
sibly charming. A long, pale wooden com-
munal table (already controversial among
personal-space-obsessed foodies) divides the
cozy, 42-bench-seat space where the crowd
ranges from toddlers to the actress Julianne
Moore, who is sitting at a nearby table with
her husband. Votives in jars hang from a pipe
over the communal table, as do chopsticks in
copper cups and specials menus on clip-
boards. Hungry patrons leave their name with
an iPad-wielding Mr. Schoenfeld, a welcoming
presence in spectacles and red suspenders. A

street outside, though everyone at Red Farm is
focusing on their food.
Chef Joe Ng, whom Mr. Schoenfeld calls the
star to his producer after he discovered
him in a Brooklyn dim sum house years ago
and brought him to Chinatown Brasserie,
would appear to be having a blast in the kitch-
en as well. Case in point: the elaborately plated
Pac Man dish. When I was making the
dumpling, I saw the ghost, Mr. Ng says of his
moment of inspiration. The four translucent-
skinned dumpling ghosts come on a long
white platter alongside a Pac Man-shape fried
sweet potato standing in guacamole. He has a
super-high level of technique, and hes able to
take it and paint with it, Mr. Schoenfeld says
of his dumpling master. Were unabashedly

oes all this whimsy taste good?
Often, but not always. A smoked
salmon and eggplant bruschetta,
with a perfectly fried aubergine
taking the place of the bread vehicle and play-
ing nicely of the salty fsh, is delicious. But
the Katzs pastrami egg roll, while intriguing
in theory, is too fatty in practice, even with a
dip in a tangy honey-mustard and kafr-lime
sauce. But, as at a traditional dim sum palace,
the occasional misfre is a welcome excuse
to try yet another of the restaurants varied
oferings, which also include more straight-
forward items like diced lamb with Chinese
broccoli and white asparagus, Kowloon
flet mignon tarts, and the spicy crispy beef.
While some of these dishes may seem like
iterations you could order up from the local
delivery place or a mall chain restaurant, the
diference lies in Red Farms commitment to
greenmarket produce and high-quality meats.
Speaking of takeout and mall chains, Mr.
Schoenfeld has aspirations of taking Red
Farm far beyond its quaint West Village
locale. He hopes to open a group of Red Farm
Web-delivery shops around the city, and hes
also interested in developing Red Farm into
a national brand of premium Asian products,
from miso to soy sauce. But, for now, ironi-
cally, the cozy restaurant is too small, and too
busy, to ofer even standard takeout and deliv-
ery. For the moment, were just trying to do
one thing well, Mr. Schoenfeld says, but hes
got big plans for the brand and has for years.
The name of Red Farm was thought about
because of where it might go in the future,
not where it is today, he says, as if narrating
a message found in fortune cookie, which, by
the way, you wont get at the end of the meal at
Red Farm. Try the chocolate pudding instead.

juxtaposition of traditional architecture and
a casual, dressed-down attitude. Its leafy,
brownstone-lined streets still lure Hollywood
location scouts in search of the quintessential
New York block, but some of its more rafsh
charms endure, keeping it from feeling too
twee. The new and improved Washington
Square, revamped to include a 20 percent
increase in foliage, also proves tempting for
uptowners reluctant to leave the bucolic
refuge of Central Park.
Nearby, in the heart of Greenwich Village,
10th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues
is the hottest street downtown right now,
says Mara Papasof of Brown Harris Stevens.
Ms. Papasof, who recently sold a penthouse
apartment here to Alec Baldwin for $11.7
million, cites past residents Susan Sarandon
and Richard Gere as evidence of the thorough-
fares appeal.
Stephen Kliegerman, the president of
Halstead Property Development Marketing,
also sees great things happening in Tribeca.
Tribeca and Battery Park City have, for the
last 35 to 40 years, been active residential
neighborhoods, but its gone from a more obvi-
ous bohemian populace to a more mainstream
one. There are many great public schools
in the area and tremendous access to Wall
Street, where a lot of these people work.
Danny Davis, a top broker at Town Residen-
tial, says Tribeca, in particular, is booming.
I can say unequivocally that the activity
Im seeing in Tribeca is unprecedented. We re-
cently listed a three-bedroom in the neighbor-
hood and showed it over 65 times in just over
a week, with at least fve prospects submitting
best and fnal sealed bids thus far. The
statistics back him up. From August through
October, the number of sales was roughly
12 percent higher than the same period last
year, with the median sales price up almost
5 percent, says Mr. Davis. Multiple bids are
not uncommon on units that are strategically
and fairly priced.
Keith Copley, senior vice president of
Sotheby's, goes as far as to liken the area
to Greenwich, Connecticut. It's got great
schools and amenities like Whole Foods, a
Barnes and Noble, and the very slick Smyth
Hotel.
M
eanwhile, experts like Julie
Pham of the Corcoran Group
argue that Chelsea is tough to
beat as downtowns area of the
moment. There are so many exciting projects
happening along [Chelseas] west side, includ-
ing the Whitney Museum groundbreaking on
13th Street and Gansevoort, Pier 57s develop-
ment on 15th Street and 10th Avenue, and the
opening of the new private school, Avenues,
one of the most technologically advanced K-12
programs in NYC, says Ms. Pham. Aside from
the artistic infuence that the new Whitney
Museum is bound to bring, tech behemoth
Google is also bringing the buying power
of its engineers to Chelsea and is boosting
[Chelseas] profle as a trend-setting neighbor-
hood, explains Ms. Pham.
With reported projects like a new hotel
from Andre Balazs, other experts cite the
Financial District as the smart place to
invest, and anticipate its grittier blocks could
soon go the way of the Meatpacking District.
For the frst time in several years, potential
homeowners are recognizing the value
and quality-of-life factors available in the
Financial District, says Heather Donough of
Prudential Douglas Elliman. With two new
schools, park openings, and an increase in ser-
vices and restaurants, the Financial District
has become a 24/7 neighborhood. The newly
revamped East River Park, which extends
from Montgomery to 12th streets, also adds
much needed open space, with its recently
completed promenade extending to Grand
Street and ofering stunning views of the river.
Leading the foodie renaissance at the South
Street Seaport nearby is the New Amsterdam
Market, breathing local life into an area that
had once been overrun with tourists.
For those who prefer to be on the cutting
edge, the Bowery is also a newly compelling
choice for sleek condos, and ofers teeming
bistros, boutiques, and galleries like the
New Museum. Over the next few years, the
Bowery will continue to go through a major
transformation and redefne trendy, says
Robert Varvara, an associate broker at Miron
Properties. The trendiest part of the Bowery
right now is between Houston and Astor
Place he continues, underlining his point by
citing celebrity residents such as John Legend,
who owns a $2.95-million-dollar property in
the area.
Home-hunters, clearly, are spoiled for
choice.

ts a Friday night, and were at the soft
launch of the Hotel Williamsburgs
new bar. Havent heard of Hotel
Williamsburg? Its located on North
12th between Berry and Wythe, about
three paces away from the Turkeys Nest, a
proper dive bar infamous for putting beer
and margaritas in Styrofoam cups so summer
revelers can drink during their kickball games
in McCarren Park. As we walk by on our way to
Williamsburgs hippest (and so far, only) hotel
bar, we happen to noticecoincidence?that
the Turkeys Nest is closed and shuttered.
Its not news that Williamsburg is getting
an upgrade: the evidence is all around you.
Streets onces dominated by bodegas and
abandoned warehouses are now flled with

chic boutiques, art galleries, cocktail bars that
sound like hotels (Hotel Delmano) and hotels
that sound like bars (the Wythe, Jed Walentass
upcoming auberge though it should be noted
that the name and the hotel are both still in
development).
Still, its one thing to roll your eyes and say
that a neighborhood has become too gentrifed
or yuppyish; its entirely another to erect two of
a boroughs few boutique hotels approximately
one block from each other, as the Wythe and
Hotel Williamsburg have done. Thats more
than getting an upgrade. Thats turning the
hipster breeding grounds into a full-fedged
resort.
Hotel Williamsburg, for its part, is deal-
ing with the situation by pretending its not

a hotel at all. Trying to get our room key, we
are rerouted to the bar several times until we
realize that check-in happens at the bar or, at
least, on the same slab of black granite where
the staf is mixing drinks. As for the Hotel Wil-
liamsburgs lobby, well, that doubles as the bar
lounge. Its a little disorienting. Look above the
bar, and suddenly you're watching a soundless
Fellini flm on loop. Look down, and, thanks to
some clear glass tiles, you can see water fow
around pebbles beneath your feet. Peer over the
bars balcony and you can see Pillar & Plough,
Hotel Williamsburgs soon-to-open restaurant,
where chef Andrs Julian Grundy will preside
once it ofcially premieres.
The back wall of the bar/foyer is glass as
well, giving view to an impossibly bright aqua
pool that sits empty, guarded by canopy beds.
The scene looks like it was recently shipped in
from South Beachs Delano. So far, so good.
We are suitably zenned out. The atmosphere
alone at the Hotel Williamsburg is so drasti-
cally transporting that we almost forget that
customers are paying $10 more for a drink here
than they would for the $4 Coors in Styrofoam
just half a block away.
Upstairs is a diferent story. We are staying
in The Treehouse suite, which we can't help
associate with Portlandias hipster-mocking
phrase Put a bird on it. A single issue of Vice
lies on the mod table in an otherwise stark liv-
ing foyer. Like so many things in Williamsburg,
our hotel room projects a sense of efortless
cool that can come only from months of careful
preparation. Look: a ladder that goes to no-
where! Ramones vinyl on the shelves! A Crosley
turntable! Chairs that look like a cross between
a beanbag and those sculptures that Katherine
OHare makes in Beetlejuice! Skull vodka in the
minibar!
Do you guys want to come over and
listen to Karen O.s new album while silk-
screening T-shirts? the room seems to ask
us. Because thats what we do here.
Were still furnishing, ofers Ben Graves
somewhat apologetically later that evening,
when the bar has cleared out. Mr. Graves is

the president of Graves World Hospitality, a
rm specializing in developing and operating
boutique resorts. Hotel Williamsburg is his lat-
est project. Scruy and handsome, Mr. Graves
could easily be a Williamsburger himself,
though it turns out his company is located in
Minnesota. (His recent commutes, we gather,
have been less than ideal.)
This is going to be a social environment,
Mr. Graves says. Were not going to be this
exclusive place where only members or guests
are allowed in. If were too packed one night,
were going to hand you a drink token so you
can come back in the future. We want this place
to be where the Williamsburg community can
hang out. This is Brooklyn as a brand that were
oering here.
Branding the Williamsburg experience: the
only strange thing about this concept is that no
one in the hotel industry has tried to capitalize
on it already. But the question remains: What
kind of traveler comes to New York to stay in an
outer borough?
Europeans, answers Branden McRill, Hotel
Williamsburgs director of food and beverage,
dryly. Mr. McRills impressive credits include
stints as the beverage and restaurant manager
at the Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurant
at the Mark Hotel, as the wine director for the
David Burke Groupe, and as the wine director
for Fishtails. International travelers dont
want to stay in Times Square when they come
to New York. They want to be in a more relaxed,
artistic environment.
But Mr. McRill is quick
to impress on us that
Williamsburg isnt just
a hotel. Most of the
money is going to
come from food and
beverage, he tells
us, picking up exactly
where Mr. Graves left o.
Weve already sold all the
rooms we wanted to for the
soft launch. Mr. McGill also takes us up to the
unopened rooftop bar, which will boast the citys
only 4 a.m. liquor license. So far, its not much
to look at. A series of industrial buildings and
yards lies below, which gives an unobstructed, if
somewhat bleak view of the city.
The best part is that the zoning laws
say that nothing around here can be built
higher than what were already seeing, says
Mr. McRill, gesturing to the depressed area
marking the border between Williamsburg
and Greenpoint. So youll always be able to
see New York from the roof.
Like Mr. Graves, Mr. McRill makes a point
of mentioning Hotel Williamsburg as a social
venue. This is going to be open to everyone,

he tells us. But around midnight, were going
to have roped of sections for bottle service.
The following morning, my partner goes
for a quick dip and a work out. Twenty min-
utes later, he comes back perplexed.
I thought the gym had two stories, but
a stafer told me the second foor is where
theyre going to put the art gallery.
Only in Williamsburg? Sure, though this
somewhat jarring combination of athletics
and aesthetics represents a potential hurdle
for what Hotel Williamsburg and the new
class of Brooklyn couture are ofering. Its
all fne and well to say that the space will be
both a welcoming social arena for locals and
a full-service hotel for travelers. In practice,
however, trying to appeal simultaneously to
the notoriously clique-y Burg scene as well
as tired tourists who just want a run on the el-
liptical without looking up to fnd themselves
being judged by 20-somethings in ironic
eyewear seems Sisyphean, to say the least.
We also wonder who in the world is going
to Brooklyn for bottle service, since the un-
apologetic, precrash display of money is the
exact antithesis of Williamsburgs cool factor.

This is a neighborhood where youll fnd $300
jeans that are made to look like they were found

in essence, is trying too hard. And in Williams-
burg, there is no more egregious mistake.

Our Airpark Community is gated with paved roads and taxiways that make it easy to get to the well maintained community owned air strip. The 2,650 ft grass, lighted and rolled runway has been
established for more than 20 years and is home to almost 2 dozen airplanes. Were home to J-3 Cubs, a Lancair, Cessnas, Pietenpole, Bonanza, RV-6, PT-19, Champ, L-19 Bird Dog, Smith Miniplane and
more. Low annual dues and no deed restrictions make our country life style on lots ranging from 3.25 - 6 acres more than just a sound investment. Its a treasure.
Equestrians will revel in the serenity that horses bring to our community. Each homestead has access to 2,900 acres of open space allowing for riding and recreation in the Division of Forestry
maintained Two Mile Prairie (Black Bear Hammock State Park). DOF maintains trails and camp sites for your enjoyment and pleasure right in your own backyard.
Explorers never run out of things to do and places to go. The Rainbow River, Homosassa Springs, Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, Withlacoochee State park, the Gulf of Mexico, Rails of Trails
(47 miles of paved bike trails), and Citrus County Caverns are just a few of the many attractions that bring visitors from all over the world to our playground.
He can bring his airplane and She can bring her horses! Perfect...
Twelve Oaks Airpark is just 13 miles north west of Crystal River Airport (KCGC) and 14 miles south east of Ocala Airport (KOCF).

DANISH WATCH DESIGN
ZEN PHILOSOPHY
Perhaps the slimmest sports watch in the world.
Model V140 designed by Christian Mikkelsen is
available in gents and ladys sizes.
Traditional sport watches tend to be bulky, often
loaded with buttons to actuate a plethora of sel-
dom used features. If you like buttons and bulk, you
need read no further. Our watches dont measure
wind speed and they wont tell you the time in Ma-
lawi. They arent built to skim the ocean floor at
60 fathoms but then again, neither were you. Dan-
ish design melds with the Zen philosophy of Obaku
balance & harmony, to produce something bet-
ter described as sporty elegance, or elegant sport,
you decide. One thing you will get with Obaku, is
a wrist hugging thin profile on a watch that can
still play rough when you do that weekend warrior
thing. And at Obakus very affordable prices, you
can still buy a bulky, buttony thing too!

Commemorates the life & times of Graf von Zeppelin, the father
of commercial aviation. Much like the old Baron himself and the
legendary leviathans of the sky that bore his name, these globe-

talking about setting the bar, we think youll agree that Time Quest

ou might reasonably expect that
a portrait artist whose work
hangs in Blenheim Palace and
the Royal Palace in Madrid might
be a traditionalist. This is not true of model-
turned-artist Bradley Livingstone Black. In his
new exhibition at the Bosi Damjanovic Gallery
on the Lower East Side, Mr. Livingstone Black,
35, displays eerie, true-to-life images of major
modern characters like Jonathan Franzen,
James Frey, and Graydon Carter.
My work wouldnt look out of place in
a home flled with contemporary art, Mr.
Livingstone Black tells NYO. The techniques
of the portrait artist have also been dragged
into the 21st century. The demands of modern
life mean that people dont generally sit for
portraits as they once did, he says. Its a bit of
a shame.
A former Ford model and one-time stem-
cell researcher, Mr. Livingstone Black studied
at Duke University and was an All-America
golfer. His rsum is all but sent over the clif
of improbability by his interests in boxing and
polo. The former will serve as inspiration for his
next collection of paintings.
Ultimately, he says, its his love of psychology
that serves to make his lofty subjects show him
their authentic selves.
But though the creations, which begin at
around $10,000 for a small work on paper,
are modern, the art form is timeless, and Mr.
Livingstone Black is somewhat nostalgic for
its golden era. A couple of hundred years ago,
portraiture was the thing, he says wistfully.
Thats how you remembered loved ones, thats
how you became part of history.

Heat-generating clothing. HEATTECH.
Lightweight high-tech fabric that works with your body heat to warm you up and keep you warm.
HEATTECH by UNIQLO, the winter clothing that turns moisture evaporating from your body into heat by itself. Then, air pockets within the
fibers keep the warmth close to you. With this fashionable tech, thin and light now means warm. Not to mention an even smoother and softer
touch for womens that comes with moisturizing elements, and new fabrics for mens that keep odor away. HEATTECH-wear less, feel warmer.
