IBUPROFEN 1. Name & class of drug generic and trade name.

GENERIC NAME: Ibuprofen BRAND NAME: Actiprofen, Advil, Motrin, Cramp end, Excedrin IB, Genpril, Haltran, Ibuprin, Midol, Pamprin-IB, Nuprin CLASSIFICATION: Nonsteiroidal anti-inflammatory, antipyretic 2. Dose range and routes for adult & geriatric client. PREPARATIONS: PO DOSING: Analgesia Adult (PO) 200 - 400 mg q 4-6h, (not to exceed 3.2 g/24h) Antiinflammatory (PO) 300 - 800 mg tid qid, (not to exceed 3.2g/24h) 3. Purpose prescribed. Underline reason your client is prescribed drug. USES: Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, primary dysmenorrheal, gout, dental pain, musculoskeletal disorders, fever 4. Major side effects & drug interactions. DRUG INTERACTIONS: decreased effect of antihypertensives, thiazides, furosemide Decreased ibuprofen action, aspirin Increased risk of bleeding: cefamandole, cefotetan, cefoparazone, valproic acid, thrombolytics, antiplatelets, warfarin Increased possibility of blood discrasias: antineoplastics, radiation Increased toxicity: digoxin, lithium, oral anticoagulants, cyclosporine, probenecid Increased GI reactions: aspirin, corticosteiroids, NSAIDs, alcohol Increased hypoglycemia: oral antidiabetics, insulin SIDE EFFECTS: headache, nausea, anorexia,

5. Nursing Implications & teaching. Report blurred vision, ringing, roaring in ears; may indicate toxicity; eye and hearing tests should be done during longterm therapy Avoid driving, other hazardous activities if drowsiness or dizziness occurs. Report change in urinary pattern, increased weight, edema, increased pain in joints, fever, blood in urine, indicate nephrotoxicity. Therapeutic inflammatory effects may take up to 1 mo. Avoid alcohol, NSAIDs, salicylates; bleeding may occur Use sunscreen to prevent photosensitivity.
