Week 12: Legal issues due Wed. Nov.

16 by 9pm Congratulations-- Youve just received a promotion to Chief Operating Officer of a mid-size media company. You will be running the day-to-day operations for the c ompany. The company is a popular news and information website. There are approxi mately 50 employees.

During your first week in this new position, you spent some time reviewing their legal compliance documents and realized that new employees to the company recei ved no guidance about legal issues during their company orientation.

Starting next week, youre going to change that. Youll be holding a meeting for new employees once a month to review the most important elements of their legal com pliance while they are employed with your company. The meeting will last just on e hour, so youll really need to be focused about what issues to discuss and how t o convey accountability to employees about those issues.

In your post, describe two of the items youll discuss in this meeting.

Include 1) the topic, 2) why you think the topic is important enough to be inclu ded in this orientation and 3) what you feel needs to be said about the topic.

You should refer to (and use) both readings for this week in your reply. Week 13: Virtual Teams- due by Nov. 30 @ 9pm For the entire semester, weve been communicating in a virtual world...a virtual c lassroom. Through email, podcasts, discussion board posts and live chats weve be en learning and sharing. How does our experience translate into the methods use d for online communication, especially in media businesses? For this weeks post you will explore the unique aspects, policies and culture of on line business communication. Imagine... You ve been asked to manage a virtual team for a company project-- and the company is CBS. There are ten people on the team and they are located all over the worl d: east coast of the US, west coast of the US, London, China, France and Spain. Lets assume the team has minimal experience collaborating online. They have expe rience using various online tools for their basic business workbut not much exper ience collaborating online.

The team has to work together to write a report recommending strategic goals for the entertainment division for 2012. The team will need to meet online a few tim es, communicate frequently via email, share documents and ultimately write the r eport.

The project will begin next week and to kick it off you need to send an email to the team with some tips and guidelines for success. (3-5 tips) Write your pos t AS IF it is the actual email or memo to the team. Go deeper than just saying "check your email every day" or something simple like that. What can you say to make sure they don t make the same mistakes you did when you had no experience collaborating virtually? What should they "always" d o? What should they "never" do? What tips or tricks really helped you? Consid er collaborations that use email, conference calling, live chats, collaborative blogs (like our threaded discussion boards), virtual worlds, etc. What will your memo say to help assure the teams success for this project? OTHER NOTE: In addition to the reading listed on your Assignment Calendar, Iv e posted a seco nd brief article under the readings tab titled, Tips for Successful Virtual Collab orations. Consider searching online for guidelines recommended or researched by other organizations. When you include one of their recommendations, please incl ude a link to that source.
