RomaneBlockbuster Domaine de la Romane-Conti To Headline Sothebys London Sale of Finest and Rarest Wines on 7 December 2011

The stone vaulted cellar of a Northern European country house

AN AUCTION of Finest and Rarest Wines at Sotheby's in London on Wednesday , 7 December 2011 will bring to Wednesday, a close the company's wine sales in 2011. The 819-lot sale, with a total pre-sale estimate of 1.75 - 2.2 million*, opens with a superlative 212-lot collection of full cases of First and other classed Growth Bordeaux, in excellent condition and recently removed from the naturally cool, stone vaulted cellar of a stunning Northern European country house. Among the many enticing wines are parcel lots of Super Second Bordeaux, such as Chteau Pichon Longueville, Baron 2000, described by Serena Sutcliffe MW, International Head of Wine, as a big wine with a big future (estimate 1,400-1,800 per 12 bottles; lots 16-20). Multiple lots of Chteau Pichon Longueville, Lalande 2000 immediately

follow: with notes of cocoa and spices, the nearly ten years that have passed since bottling have produced a beautifully-bred wine characterised by its smooth-as-silk texture on the palate, estimate 1,600-2,000 per 12 bottles (lots 21-25).

Perfect for Christmas drinking is Chteau d'Yquem 2003, estimate 700-900 per six bottles (lots 205-212). The excessive heat and high temperature of 2003 proved to be a triumph for the Chteau, resulting in a wine that is notable for its orange honey nose mixed with acacia. The balance and elegance achieved was a feat for Pierre Lurton who came to Yquem after the harvest.

The second major collection of the sale is a fabulous range of First Growth and Top Right Bank wines recently removed from a purpose built and immaculately kept underground cellar of a country house. Since the owner bought the wines for drinking, he removed them from their original wooden cases and displayed the bottles in his cellar. As a result, superlative vintages from the last three decades are available at competitive prices. Standing out is Chteau Haut Brion 1989, a classic among classics, offered here at 8,000-10,000 per 12 bottles (lot 222).
