Pastoral Corner

November 20, 2011

Greetings!
Some Thanksgiving thoughts: If one theme is constantly present in our Judeo-Christian religious tradition, it has to be eating! The story begins with Adam and Eve eatingAbrahams feast for three strangers who turn out to be angles, Moses and the lamb dinner that becomes Passover, the Jews in the desert with mannaand the Gospels continue this love affair with eating. Jesus favorite image of heaven is a banquet at Gods tablewedding dinnersfriends tablesand Jesus final meal which becomes the sacrament of Holy Eucharist. Eating should have deep religious and social significance. However, few real feasts remain today: Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter and Birthday dinners. Most of the time, we eat on the run. McDonaldswould have been beyond the imagination of ancient peoplesnot because of the architecture or the technology but simply because of the idea of fast food. Fast food would have been as inconceivable as fast-love. We seek religious experiences that are not phony, unreal, or embalmed with dusty dogma. Perhaps the place to begin to find these spiritual experiences is at our next meal. To feast doesnt require a lot of money, only imagination and love. A feast requires only simple things such as people who love one another, some food and drink, and a sense of magic. A real meal is sacred time shared. Lord of Gifts, With uplifted hearts, we have gathered around this table to thank You with prayer and with the worship of feasting. We are grateful not only for the gifts of life itself, but for all the gifts of friendship, love, devotion and forgiveness that we have shared. On this feast of giving thanks, we thank You for showing us how to return thanks by lives of service, by deeds of hospitality, by kindness and concern for each other. We are most grateful for the way You, Our Lord, have become visible to us in one another, in countless daily gifts and in the marvels of creation. Thanks be to God! (Pray all Ways by Fr. Edward Hays)

Deo Gratias, Barbara M. Harrison
