Feast of Christ the King

The Church celebrates the feast of Christ the King on the last Sunday (34th Sunday) of her liturgical year. It was Pope Pius XI who introduced this feast in the liturgy in 1925. Although emperors and kings now exist mostly in history books, we still honor Christ as the King of the Universe, by enthroning him in our hearts and allowing him to take control of our lives. The first reading introduces God as a shepherd reminding us of Christs claim that he is the Good Shepherd. In the second reading, St. Paul presents Christ as the all-powerful ruler who raises the dead and to whom every other power and authority must eventually give way. Todays gospel describes Christ the King coming in his heavenly glory to judge us, based on how we have shared our love and blessings with others through genuine acts of charity in our lives. Jesus is present to us now, not only as our Good Shepherd leading, feeding and healing his sheep, but also as dwelling in those for whom we care. In the parable of the separation of sheep from goats in the Last Judgment, every person to whom we give ourselves, "whether hungry, thirsty or a stranger, naked, sick or in prison," is revealed to us as having been the risen Jesus. Our reward or punishment depends on how we have treated this risen Jesus in the needy.

Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

In today's Gospel, Saint Matthew offers a compelling vision of the end-time, when the people of all the nations are brought before the Lord to give an account of their lives and actions. Interestingly, the sheep, the righteous ones, are rewarded for having acted with love and compassion without having recognized the face of Christ in others. Good stewards recognize those in need of their care as gifts from God. They know that they are the instruments of Christ's active, loving presence in the world. How will we treat others this week: our family members, neighbors, customers, strangers? What accounting will we make to the Lord for their care?

Stewardship Appeal Update

Commitment weekend was November 13th. Thank you to all parishioners who have returned your commitment cards! If you have not returned a commitment card, please do so in the next week or so. There are three envelopes in which we ask your support. The white envelopes fund general expense, while green and gold are restricted funds that support specific needs of our mortgage and capital improvements. By completing the commitment card, it will help us to operate and plan in a fiscally prudent manner. God has blessed each and every one of us! One way to show our gratitude to God is to share some of our gifts. Ideally, we invest in what we believe in. We volunteer. We financially support. Hopefully you believe in Christ the King and believe in what our parish does for you and for our community. We hope that you find that this is a place you want to invest in. - The Finance Council

Stewardship Prayer For Thanksgiving

Heavenly Father, We give you thanks for the inspiration of your Holy Spirit as we reflect on the Gospel call to exercise Christs stewardship on our journey of faith. We ask you to guide us in our discernment, and show us how to be faithful in the plans we make, the actions we take, and the love we share on our pilgrim way. Give us the courage to find wisdom in our sacrifices, joy in our generosity, and hope in the compassion we show, especially to those most in need of your comfort and care. And create in us a more open heart and a greater awareness of our need to grow, to change, to be transformed, so that we may be better stewards of your gifts for the good of all. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen.

We Conclude our Liturgical Year

We have now come to the end of the liturgical year, the point that marks the transition from one period to another. Today we see that the kingdom of God is inclusive. Its embrace is as comprehensive as is the embrace of God. Criteria for membership are not based on obedience to the commandments or on conformity to ritual obligation, but on the bonds of love and concern. What we do for others, we do for Christ, because Christ is identified with those in need. We very seldom see the face of the glorified Christ in the faces of the needy; it is more often the face of the disfigured Christ that is turned to us. We see his fear and his shame, his brokenness and sense of loss. As difficult as it may be to look into such eyes, it is precisely the needy with whom Christ is identified. Having entered into the frailty of human nature, identified himself with the needy, and handed himself over to death, in the end Christ will have conquered all. It is a curious kingdom that he has won, a kingdom of the weak rather than the strong. He has turned the standards of the world upside down. He has shown that it does not take strength to ignore or to exploit the needy, but it does take strength to overcome our own selfishness in order to serve them. The kingdom that Christ hands over to God is a kingdom of love and care. Dianne Bergant CSA

Be A Good Steward of Thanksgiving Day

Your Thanksgiving Day can be more than just enjoying a great meal and turning on the television to search for the traditional parades and football games. How about expressing your stewardship of this day in a more meaningful way? Here are some suggestions for making Thanksgiving an opportunity for expressing our gratitude to the Lord in creative ways: Go to Mass and count your blessings. Start the day off on a positive note and celebrate the Eucharist. In your prayer reflect on five things you are most grateful for in your life. Then reflect on how you can be an even better steward of these gifts. Write Im thankful for you cards and give them out or e-mail them on Thanksgiving (or mail them beforehand). Share your Thanksgiving meal with someone who is alone this Thanksgiving. Look for someone, such as a neighbor, co-worker, fellow parishioner, college student or armed services personnel who may be separated from family and ask them to join in your Thanksgiving dinner. Practice ecumenism! Many parishes make Thanksgiving an opportune time to join in ecumenical services with other Christian worshipping communities, or inter-faith activities and programs with non-Christian centers of worship. Find one nearby and experience something new and enriching. Visit the sick. Check with hospitals, assisted living facilities or nursing homes in the area to see if there are volunteer opportunities to visit with patients or residents on that day. Help someone if you can. Extend your generosity and blessings beyond your own family. Be part of an adopt-a-family effort, help distribute food baskets, or bring canned foods or clothing to St. Vincent de Paul centers. Volunteer your time at a soup kitchen to help prepare and serve Thanksgiving dinners to others. Take a walk. Find a place to enjoy Gods gift of creation. Head out the door for a refreshing walk. Invite family, friends or others to share the experience too. Most important! Take advantage of the Thanksgiving holidays to focus on what youre grateful for and the things you appreciate about yourself and others. It is an ideal time to remember and to celebrate the many blessings in our lives.

Latin High Mass coming to Saint Isaac Jogues!

The Traditional ExtraOrdinary Form of the Roman Rite Wednesday, November 23rd at 7pm (The Eve of Thanksgiving Day)
The night before Thanksgiving, on Wednesday, November 23rd at 7pm Saint Isaac Jogues Parish will celebrate a traditional Latin Mass, according to the ExtraOrdinary Form of the Roman Rite of 1962 the Tridentine Mass. This Extraordinary Form of the Mass has been described by many of the great saints of the Church as the most beautiful thing, this side of Heaven. Father Scott Haynes, S.J.C. along with other priests and brothers of the Canons Regular of Saint John Cantius (Chicago, Illinois), will be here to celebrate the Mass and provide the beautiful Latin music. Attend this age-old celebration to begin the holiday season that is upon us once again. It will be a special faith-filled celebration, full of memories, especially for older Catholics who remember the Latin Mass. Yet, as part of the living heritage of the Church, it will provide a powerful prayer experience of the mystery and majesty of God for all. Young and old, life-long Catholics and new Catholics are invited to attend this Mass which is centuries old the Mass most of the Saints knew. The Traditional Latin Mass, as it will be celebrated Wednesday evening, November 23rd is more than 400 years old. But, its roots go back to the time of the Apostles, and will offer a truly uplifting experience for all who attend. Please join us. Candidates Who Will Enter Into the Fullness of the Faith on Easter Sunday
My name is Sandi Schroeder. I was baptized Christian and attended St. Francis Catholic High School. I went to Catholic Church with my grandmother when I was younger. My mother and father have attended Christ the King for twenty plus years. I have always liked the ceremony of the Catholic Church throughout my life. I decided it was time to make it official. My sponsor is my sister in law, Paige Logan. My name is Amy Schroeder. I was baptized Christian in a Presbyterian church. Growing up I did not attend church. My grandmother has been a parishioner of Christ the King for all of my life. This has drawn me towards Jesus and the Church. Being a part of the Catholic Church gives me a sense of belonging and peace in my life. My sponsor is Anthony Dilla. My name is Reuben Logan. I was baptized Presbyterian and have attended Christ the King Parish for many years with my wife, Elaine. After many years of being called to do that for which God put me on Earth. This is for me the beginning of the final journey to finally meet face to face with Him. Hopefully, He will grant me the time, direct my hands and my heart, and give me the strength to accomplish that mission. My wife, Elaine, will be my sponsor. My name is Marie Lowenthal Schram. I was baptized a Catholic but I was not raised in the Catholic Church. I did occasionally attend various Christian churches. When my husband and I decided to start a family, we agreed that we would raise the children in the Catholic faith. We have them in Catholic school, and they have learned so much. My oldest son just told me that he wants to be a priest! I wanted to join the Church so I could help lead them in the Catholic faith. My sponsor will be my husband, Jeff Schram.

Blessings to you and yours on this day of thanks. May your holiday be filled with the joy family brings, the peace of our Lord Jesus, and prayer for those less fortunate. The Catechists and Staff of Christ the King Parish

Interfaith Thanksgiving Service 2011

The DuPage Interfaith Resource Network Thanksgiving Service will be held on Monday, November 21st at 7:30 PM in the beautiful sanctuary of St. Procopius Abbey at the corner of Maple and College in Lisle. The service features broad participation from a wide range of religions including: Protestants, Buddhists, Catholics, Jews, Moslems, Zoroastrians, Sikhs, and B'hai. We hear the prayers of other religions, sung and chanted. The service is a wonderful way to begin the week of Thanksgiving. The warmth and diversity of the worshipping congregation expresses the promise of America. We respect our differences and appreciate that which binds us together. We proclaim a common message of thanks with our words and melodies of prayer.

Leadership Meeting
The next Leadership Meeting of Christ the King will be held on Tuesday, December 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the Early Learning Academy. All members of the parish commissions are reminded to attend. Anyone in the parish interested in serving on a commission are also welcome to attend. The theme of the meeting will be to discuss the implementation of the Communication Theme of the parish strategic plan. Gratitude: The Heart of Thanksgiving

The Giving Tree

Our Giving tree will be set up in the Narthex the weekend of November 19 & 20. We will have a variety of tags up this year. The gifts you provide will go to:

St. Vincent DePaul PADS Catholic Charities Prayer Shawl Ministry

Thank-you in advance for your generosity!

JESUS SAID FEED THE HUNGRY

Thank you to all our First Grade Families that participated in our monthly service project. During the month of October, our families worked on the Corporal Work of Mercy-Feed the Hungry. The families decide how best to participate and complete the project together. They then do a reflection and turn that in. We draw a name from all the reflections turned in and have two winners who receive a gift card that will benefit the whole family. Some families went to Feed my Starving Children and others packed food for the Food Pantries. Others shopped for their favorite foods and donated it to various food pantries. Even though we could only choose two to win, all families who participated are winners and based on the reflections we received, learned quit a bit about being hungry!

In the United States, Thanksgiving Day is a holiday that is among the nations finest national traditions. Indeed, setting a day aside for giving thanks to God is not just a U.S. phenomenon. Canadians have a Thanksgiving Day, and many countries worldwide celebrate harvest festivals that express gratitude to God. For Christian stewards, Thanksgiving Day has special meaning, for we know that gratitude lies at the very heart of stewardship. A grateful heart heralds the beginning of discipleship and opens the way to our deepest response, the desire to return to God for the bounty of our lives. The French educator Jean Baptiste Massieu put it beautifully: Gratitude is the memory of the heart. For what do we thank our Creator? The early American colonists, who gave inspiration to the Thanksgiving Day tradition, were thankful for their very survival in a harsh and unforgiving environment. Many of their compatriots were buried in the soil of their new land, far from all that had been cherished and familiar. Its natural to thank God when things seem to turn out the way we had hoped, when disaster is averted, when life seems filled with abundance. Harder, perhaps, is the ability to thank God for being present to us in times of struggle, seeming failure, illness and death. But, in the heart of the Christian steward, the memory of Gods presence is a comfort and a gift all its own. If we take time to reflect on our lives, we often discover that that for which we are most grateful was a gift which we struggled to receive. What came to us in the form of hardship has in hindsight revealed itself as gift. This is why each days struggles and trials should be met with a heartfelt thank you. Meister Eckhart, the 14th century Dominican mystic, wrote, If the only prayer you ever say is thank you, that will suffice. At first, this seems puzzling. What of praise and petition? But Eckhart knew that the most genuine response, and indeed, the first and most spontaneous response of the heart which has discovered God, is thank you. Gratitude lies at the beginning of true prayer. As we reflect on this time of thanksgiving, let us be present to those moments when Gods gifts were hidden in shadow and remember to be thankful for all.

Thanksgiving Day Eucharist 9:00am

"Give thanks in all circumstances for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you"
(Thess. 5:18)

As November quickly passes us by, nearly everyone looks with anticipation to the Thanksgiving Day feast. Families and friends gather around tables bursting with good food, a signal that the season of winter Holy Days is about to begin. On Thanksgiving Day, many Catholics will attend Mass, although it is not a Holy Day. It is a day when the secular culture and the Church meet. Over 400 years after the first Thanksgiving, the missals used in Roman Catholic parishes throughout the United States now present special readings for Thanksgiving Day. The word, Eucharist, means "thanksgiving." What better way to celebrate Thanksgiving Day that to celebrate Eucharist in union with all Catholics in the United States. Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on all the gifts we have been blessed with, beginning with the gift of our own life and the lives of those we love. But it doesn't end there. It is also a time to pray for those who feel they don't have anything to give thanks for. We invite you to bring non-perishable goods for the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry. We will have a presentation of food for the needy during the offertory of the mass-the time when we physically present our gifts before the Altar of Sacrifice. Following mass, blessed bread will be passed out for your family meals that evening. Thank you to all those who volunteer for our St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry and PADS service team. These servants tend to the poor and needy of our community each and every week throughout the year. Please note that there will not be a 8:30am Mass on Thanksgiving, nor will there be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Fr. Peter and the entire parish staff wish you, your family and friends a safe, happy, and blessed Thanksgiving!
