what is life ?

 
i mean we are born on this planet, we call earth, that goes around the sun, we have this natural satellite called moon. we 
believe they are gods..or we used to believe.., well there are many things we believe in... which scientist say or claim has or 
may have some explanation,  but we believe in them from religious explanation point of view or some philosophical point of 
view. 
what is philosophy ?, well i would say it a branch of science that makes us easy to understand complicated issues. it need not 
give us the correct answer or tell the truth, but gives us an explanation. lets take an example ! rocket science, and cryogenic 
engine .. well, i we were to go to a scientist who worked in designing these and ask him to explain us the working of 
cryogenic engine, he/she would fist ask us our qualification, lets say we are just graduate in some discipline. so the scientist 
who would explain from newton's laws of every action has equal and opposite reaction, and then that the engine pushes the 
hot gas out thus getting pushed in the opposite direction! well, we understood the working! ..right !? ..well really ? i mean 
can we then sit and design one ? no! what he told us was a highly consolidated extremely simplified details of it. because he 
knows we can not grasp the actual working of it, if he/she were to explain us, so he/she will not waste our and his time on it.
also we have this concept of defining thing and setting it in boundaries, like weight or a car, height of mt everest, distance to 
moon, and also we believe in "start" and an "end".. we try to apply this to everything..., that is everything has or had a 
beginning and also has an end. well as a matter of fact lord krishna in bhagawat geeta too said ..that everything has to end, 
that includes this earth, our home.
okay! what about us ?, i mean... as per this rule, then we too had some beginning!, so who created us ?..when were we 
created ?.. or did we just evolve..like the darwin's theory ? or were we created by some rouge experiment done by aliens ? 
(like mentioned in chariots of the gods by erich anton paul ). 

lets get to the topic?
okay, so about life! to understand about our life we need to understand us, i.e. human beings. so who are we ? where we 
came from ?..well i'll try to talk about that in my next series of writing :­) .. if i should or get time !
but, before that.. we need to understand how we came in to bing ? who created us ? who is he if not male who is she ?..if not 
human life then who is it ? but wait!! ..can you know god ? i mean if i were to give you the chapter on “god” from the book 
of "brahma­gyan" ..the super knowledge (lets assume it exist), can you even understand what i will be saying then? okay!.. 
you may argue yes! ..well..i would like to give you some comparison, so first lets try to understand a simple household 
creature we all have seen and may squashed many times.. the ants. we'll come to this "brahma­gyan" ..the super knowledge a 
little later.

the ants, their definition.
they are alive, live in colonies of their own, have an hierarchy built in, every one in the civilization of theirs has a role, they 
do their job, no one teaches them, work hard for their self preservation and colonies, may not accept ants from other 
colonies.. so i can say have a king­of culture of their own. so this is ..say a definition of ant. pretty much that of some 
humble tribe of humans in some deep jungle in prehistoric time, right?

the tiny oracle
lets say there is some ants who are designated oracle of the colony, mostly all are, yes ..they are..don't believe? okay!.. just 
read on about my definition about the tiny oracles!
an oracle is a person or individual who can predict future,right!, so lets say an ant oracle named "anto" is an old, learned 
experienced fellow. he has seen many ups and down of the civilization, through out his life time. 
so one day he feels the ground vibration and the vibration is periodic and with increased intensity!. ..so he declares an 
eminent trouble heading for the colony,every one takes cover, run frantically, the defender go out ..prepared to fight, the eggs 
are moved in and secured, all are prepared..., and then nothing happens the vibration stops then starts again and fades away! 
so.. some ants, lets say the teenagers leash out at the old guy anto, claiming his prediction is false, and is base less, its blind 
belief.. its old fashioned! ..and the believe science can answer their question, but will take time and effort, the old fellow is 
wrong and has no truth in his evaluation and prediction. also this is not the first time! earlier too anto did some prediction 
where some where correct and others wrong. in fact some time back he predicted about flood! but nothing happened.. some 
moist air, some tunnels were indeed flooded but very little. 
so, they ridiculed anto... for being a religious zealot. 

correlation
well, one day i was just walking on the dirt road near my house... when i suddenly realized this massive ant colony on my 
path.. so i stopped!..looked at it and skipped it ..but i did notice that the ants were running crazy and some staring at me.. but 
i had better things to do ..so i went about doing my work, that left the ants in peace.
the anto (the tiny oracle) had heard my foot steps and realized i may be heading towards them.. and destroy them, anto dint 
know it was me nor did he know its some human being... and never can he understand that i was going about my work.. i had 
no intension of harming them, well on the contrary i too dint know they were there, so i may have harmed them un­
knowingly, but he did sense me, and even he did, he could not understand me... 
also when he had predicted about the flood, in fact he predicted rain, the climatic condition had changed, temperature had 
changed, there was moisture in the air, but they were not flooded that bad!.. because their colony was not out in the 
open..but under a shelter of a big glass plate (out glass dining table had broken so we kept it out), that protected them from 
direct rain ..and also at a bit raised ground so not much of flooding. but did the anto realize that?.. no he dint .. because he 
just dint understand that! and he can not understand it.

capability
anto could not understand this, cause he did not have the capability!.. it's brain working on this detail is like a tiny 8bit 
micro­controller running at 12mhz clock with 8kb of ram! trying to run a weather forecasting software!..okay..thats a bit 
technical.. lets say you try to install win vista on a old dusty (good old) 386 pc with 32mb ram and 1gb hard drive with a 1x 
cd­rom drive.. well, first it'll take you hours to install if possible (unlikely) with1x speed of cd­rom drive, next..lets say due 
to some unexplained miracle (unlikely) if win vista is successfully installed, it will take you ..say 1hr to boot up and log in to 
your vista ?.
okay!, what i am struggling to say is.. the capability is just not there!, our little oracle anto just did not have the capability to 
understand that he is part of a colony just like few millions of them in that area, and the area is inhabited by many creatures 
along with super – ultra intelligent creature called human being, who can make their like hell if that wanted to.. the area they 
are on is a land on the planet called earth, that is so big that they just cat imagine..and has complex weather pattern that the 
super ultra intelligent creatures with their super computer is not capable of understanding and predict it, and when they 
do..they are often wrong! like our poor anto. well now i recall the story from “the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy”, where 
some intelligent aliens build a super computer for an answer (about life) and the super computer they build is also not 
capable of answering.
lord krishna said in bhagawat geeta, you (human) can not understand me with your knowledge or science, you can only 
understand me with your "bhakthi" devotion. well so is "bhakthi" a new frontier of science ?..well yes and no! it's 
philosophy!.. so we come back to the "brahma­gyan" ..the super knowledge. so can we understand god ?

bhakthi/devotion
may be lord krishna was trying to tell us that, it is beyond the capability of humans to understand him, the god! who he is.. 
what makes him, how did he came in to being..who created him? just like "anto" can not understand what world is, what rain 
is.. how the vibration is related to his prediction, even if we (humans) can communicate with ants and try to tell them, they 
still can not understand..but that does not means they are dumb, they are smart for their survival needs, similarly we 
(humans) are smart..but may be not smart enough for our survival.. who knows what exactly is universe ?.. may be it is 
something totally different than we think.. lets say the black hole! if it really is a black hole! ah don't tell me any equations. i 
would suggest you read first chapter of stefan hawkins book, where he explained how humans thought earth is flat, and they 
had reason and some mathematic proofs build on it, then they were convinced its sphere and again they build mathematic 
prof on it, we humans always build proofs on what we see and on the point of view we see it as, it need not be correct, so we 
keep changing it.., that is keep correcting it.
so, how do we understand it ?..i mean the earth, the creation of earth.. we assume, we set things, we come up with reasons! 
..like say a big bang created the universe.., explain that the universe is expanding, based on the doppler effect on change in 
color of light and other stuff. so we were to put this simply and easily to a kid i would say god created it, as if i manage to 
teach him/her about bigbang theory, then his/her next question would be ?.. “okay so who put the big ball there before the 
bang happened?”, “where was is kept” and the questions will keep evolving, every time in to more details of it. so the 
philosophical answer would settle it. we know its not that way! but to keep the kid quite...well, actually we too don't know if 
it really is that way.

so which philosophy we can understand or partially quench our thirst for the knowledge of the creation and creator. but, out 
main topic was ..”life” ! what is life ? well in "the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy" written by douglas adams, also mentions 
that the super computer built by the super intelligent aliens could not answer. well i too think we can not understand it.. i 
mean what is life ?, why are we here ?, what are we here for ?.. who put us here and why ? why am i writing this ? and why 
are you reading this ?
well, the thirst for knowledge! every one has it, its just that they are too occupied with other important things in life than sit 
and ponder about life! ...i guess they would want to ponder over it in their financially stable retirement life, well, i too think 
so, but some times in just the right company of people and few glass of beer, little bit of free mind (free from work tension) i 
do start pondering over it, what is life ? why are we doing this ? but later, after the hangover subsides, i get about doing my 
job and rest of my daily activities. what that my duty! my karma! that's what lord krishna said in bhagawat geeta “do your 
duty honestly with out the expectation of results, leave the results to me”, “for, i will decide what needs to be done, what is 
correct for the time”.    

so! like ants we too should get back to our job, and do it sincerely.
