Course Title and Number Measurements and Instrumentation, 0908341 Lecturer Dr. Lutfi Al-Sharif, Mechatronics Engineering Department e-mail: lal-sharif@theiet.org Course Website http://fetweb.ju.edu.jo/staff/Mechatronics/LShareef/ The course website will contain the following: Any important announcements (e.g., exam dates) Handout materials Exercises and problems (and solutions where possible) Home-works (and solutions where possible) Quizes and exams (where possible) Extra reading material. Assignments submitted by students Attendance Absence of more than 7 hours (seven one hour lectures or five one and half hour lectures) will result in the expulsion of the student from the course. This will be applied very strictly. Course Outline The course aims to introduce the candidate to the concepts and principles of measurement systems, including components of measurement systems, the actual systems used for measurement, the devices used for testing, displaying and analysing the related signals as well as the sensors and technologies used for acquiring the data. The emphasis is on the measurement of electrical quantities. Course Objectives The candidate should have at the end of the course a good understanding of the principles of measurement including the characteristics of measuring devices, types of measurement error, electrical noise, calibration, and measurement of the main 7 electrical quantities (V, I, R, C, L, f, ). . He/she should also have a good overview of the test, display and analysis equipment used, as well as suitable data acquisition systems. Course Contents 1. Introduction to Measurement Systems: Measurement system applications, elements of a measurement system, selection criteria for measurement systems. 2. Units: SI System, fundamental units, derived units; unit writing conventions; suffixes and prefixes; significant figures. 3. Measurement system types: The six classifications of types of measurement systems. 4. Static Characteristics: Accuracy, precision/repeatability/reproducibility, environmental effects, resolution, non-linearities (dead-zone, hysteresis)
