Technology for a Sustainable World

CGS Conference Each year CGS hosts a conference to highlight relevant issues in a Bangladeshi and global context. In 2010 Environmental Challenges were addressed while in 2011 we looked at Global Inequalities, including economic, social and political inequalities and the MDGs. In 2012 we are hoping to re-visit some of the issues tackled in 2010 and 2011 within the framework of current technological developments. Preamble Technology has always offered the possibility of a better quality of life by providing solutions to agricultural, health and energy needs. Yet this has been at an enormous cost; with resource extraction and emissions causing air, water and land pollution and in some cases dire environmental consequences. A distressing paradox is that while technology has on the one end taken man to the moon and found solutions to some of the deadliest diseases, the vast majority of the worlds population continues to live in abject poverty with insufficient food and limited access to basic necessities such as clean water, energy, healthcare or education. The persisting contradictions between a better life created and supported by technology for the wealthy few, and increasing environmental degradation and persistent poverty for the vast majority calls for a deeper exploration and understanding of the nature of technology and its relationship to a sustainable society.

Conference themes In this conference we will explore the inherent paradoxes between technology, development and sustainability. We will investigate current trends in technologies that are providing solutions to global inequalities and environmental sustainability. We will look at case studies on how a few communities employ technological solutions to environmental problems. Finally we will explore emerging technologies that promise a sustainable future.
