1. GENERAL 1.1 - Product overview

EOW300 telephone engineering order wire units are deployed along a link or in a transmission network to allow communication between operators for installation or maintenance purposes. The telephones that are connected to the EOW300 are standard off-the-shelf telephones and compatible with the switched network. They must be set to dual tone multifrequency mode (DTMF). The EOW300 units communicate with one another over 64 kbit/s digital channels available on the transmission equipment (optical fibres, microwave links etc). Each EOW300 acts as a digital repeater/multiplexer. All data from one channel (V.11 or Z) is forwarded to the others to broadcast the information throughout the network. Each EOW300 comprises (see Figure 1.1): three 64 kbit/s interfaces (V.11), a local telephone interface (Z interface), LEDs, signalling loop extension contacts (dry loops), a Reset button, a -48 Vdc power supply connector, an external power supply connector. Calls set up via the EOW300 units have the following general features: Calls can be made to a specific telephone, a group of telephones or to all telephones. The EOW300 units provide no confidentiality; any user can join in a conversation that is already set up. The equipment in the EOW300 network can be configured as a "closed loop" (ring networks) provided that one of the EOW300 units in the ring is declared as the "ring master".

1 - GENERAL

1.2 - Operating features 1.2.1 - Call management rules

The EOW300 operates as follows: In general, a high-pitched beep in the handset signals that the dialled DTMF sequence has been recognized and accepted whereas a low pitched beep indicates that the sequence has not been recognized. During a conversation, two distinctive beeps indicate that a user has lifted or replaced his handset. Calls can be made to a single telephone, a group of telephones or to all the telephones in the network. Calls to a single telephone are made in the usual way by lifting the handset and dialling the number of the required telephone (three digit number). Dialling and its effects (ringing) can be cancelled by hanging up the calling phone. If no call is in progress when the handset is lifted, the EOW300 responds with a dial tone. When the number has been dialled, the local EOW300 responds with a routing tone followed by the ringing tone. Note: For a group call or general call, the routing and ringing tones do not exist. A high pitched beep tells the user that the call request has been accepted. When conversation begins, it cuts out any tone signals to make way for the speech signals. If one handset is lifted, the lifting of a second handset connects the two users, regardless of whether a number has been dialled. If a user lifts his handset when a call is in progress, he is automatically connected to that call. A call ends when all the phones have been hung up. Any DTMF sequence can be dialled when a conversation is already in progress. During conversation, the user can isolate himself from the network by pressing "R" (or with an on-hook pulse of between 50 and 350 ms) to dial a DTMF sequence for example. The same "R" button is used to return to conversation mode. When a telephone is engaged in a call, it does not ring if its number is dialled. It is possible to switch to programming mode at any time. This is for setting up the local EOW300 (assigning the telephone number, group number etc). A self-call function is used to test the local EOW300 (checking the telephone number and the ringing and tone functions). The telephone is disconnected from the EOW300 communication network during this test.

1.2.2 - DTMF sequences

The DTMF sequences for using and programming the equipment are listed below:

- DTMF using Sequences

#, on-hook or Reset sequence. This is for cancelling a DTMF call sequence when entering numbers. ### within three seconds, remote on-hook sequence for telephones off-hook. This works by muting any phone that is off the hook and generating noise. The EOW300 concerned transmits a busy tone in the handset and disconnects the digital summing of the speech signals over the Z interface in both directions. Note: - This mode does not adversely affect telephones that are on the hook. - To end mute mode, simply replace the handset. - Any handset that has been the only one off-hook on the line for more than 10 minutes is automatically muted. *** within three seconds, general call sequence This rings all the phones in the network at the same time. Note: No routing or ringing tones. A high-pitched beep indicates that the dialled sequence has been accepted.

*N within three seconds, group call sequence. N represents a digit from 0 to 9. Note: No routing or ringing tones. A high-pitched beep indicates that the dialled sequence has been accepted.

NNN, individual call sequence, N representing a digit from 0 to 9. Note: For a self-call, dialling your own number generates a busy tone and the telephone rings when it has been hung up. The EOW300 self-call procedure ends the next time the handset is lifted.

** within three seconds, sequence for switching to programming mode. This is for setting up the EOW300. In this mode, the unit disconnects the sound bridge between the Z interface and the V.11 interfaces. This sequence can be dialled at any time. The EOW300 confirms the transition to this mode with six short 440 Hz beeps in the handset. This signal is repeated approximately every three seconds. Simply hang up the handset to exit this mode.

1 - GENERAL

DTMF programming sequences:

*1NNN, telephone number programming sequence. N represents a digit from 0 to 9. *2N, group number programming sequence. N represents a digit from 0 to 9. *3CCC, programming sequence for activating each V.11 interface. C is either 0 (port OFF), or 1 (port ON). The first, second or third C respectively selects or deselects the first, second or third port. *0*0, network reset sequence. This remotely reboots all the network units and the local unit after one second. It's necessary to wait for a low-pitched beep between the two *0 sequences for the command to take effect, otherwise the operation must be reordered.

Note :

- All the parameters configured during programming mode (telephone number, group number, port selection) are saved in non volatile memory.

2.3.3.1 - Linear networks

In linear networks, all EOW300 units whether or not linked to transmission equipment must be in "slave ring" mode. Any V.11 port may be used.

2.3.3.2 - Ring networks

"Ring master" mode: When the EOW300 units are on a ring network, only one unit in the ring must be configured in "ring master" mode. Each EOW300 in "ring master" mode is designed to: disconnect digital summing and signalling in both transmission directions when the communication ring is correctly closed. switch to "ring slave" mode (standard mode) when it detects the opening of the communication ring when a fault has been declared (see section 1.2.3).

Rules for setting the equipment to "ring master": If, in a ring network, only one EOW300 is configured with three V.11 ports active, this equipment must be in "ring master" mode. If, in a ring network, several EOW300 units are configured with three V.11 ports active, one of these units must be in "ring master" mode. If, in a ring network, no EOW300 is configured with three V.11 ports active, the unit in "ring master" mode can be set any way.

Important: An EOW300 "ring master" mode unit must have ports 1 and 2 on the communication ring of which it is master.

2.4 - Commissioning
On each unit, check when powering up that: the selftest is OK: Engaged, remote, port#1, port#2, port#3 and master come on in turn every 0.5 seconds. The V.11 channels linked to units already powered up must be enabled and those linked to units powered down must indicate a fault. When all the EOW300 units in a network have been powered up, it is advisable to execute a General reset (programming sequence *0 *0) from any station.

Important: The setup parameters are saved in the event of a power down or power outage.
