Wings for Life is co-sponsored by Mikulaks Tendertales and Keri Ayers Moms in Motion. Information on submitting donations may be gathered at either organizations website Tendertales. com or Momsinmotion.net Wings kickoff The kickoff 11-11-11 event included a silent auction, donations and free performances from several area musicians, including The Band of Unknown Origin, EyeCandy, and guitarist-singer Amanda Edlow. Edlow joined Unknown Origin chanteuse Kim Moon to form an additional dynamic musical duo. The beneficiaries of the fundraiser explained their sons situation. When our oldest son was four, he was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. We instinctively

The Wings for LIfe crew By Roger Bianchini Warren County Report A special 11-11-11 fundraiser at Historic Jordan Springs in Frederick County has raised over $,00 for two brothers suffering from the same deteriorative muscular disease that took the life of local resident, 18-year-old WCHS grad Glenn Mikulak, last year. And actually, according to organizers that amount will increase significantly due to the promise of an anonymous donor to match all other funds raised from the 11-11-11 event through the end of the year. Co-sponsor Glenda Mikulak told us, I had reserved Jordan Springs after Glenns passing not knowing what would be happening but thought the date was significant to have a party. Three weeks prior I turned it into a cause and then a chance meeting with Kim Moon and it brought the music and cause to life so we all collaborated. The community immediately rallied with many silent auc-

Wings for Lifes goal is to raise the money necessary to send two brothers to Texas to begin treatment with a new VECTTOR machine and then to bring the machine home to continue their treatment. The machine itself costs $5000, Mikulak explained. Of course there will be training and travel expenses. This family has two boys with Duchenne, so one machine will be able to help both of them. Mikulak reports a friend of her late son has seen significant slowing of

While its getting harder for me everyday physically, I am doing all I can I hope Im an inspiration to other people, Glenn told us when he took his 10,000-piece KNex ship to WCHS for display his senior year. And perhaps acknowledging his pending fate on a not-toodistant horizon, he added, This ship will be my legacy.

Glenn Mikulak during spring 2010 display of his 10,000piece K-Nector of the Seas at WCHS knew that our lives had been undeniably altered forever. We had lost control of the most important thing to every parent - the health of your child. Our hearts break everyday due to the pain and the stress of feeling like there isnt anything in your power that you can do. It is so terribly difficult to look at our son and see him cry over not being able to walk and wanting to so badly. The feeling of helplessness that we have is beyond words. Each day, we see him struggle with some of the smallest things that we so easily take for granted. There have been times in which I have dreamed of what it would be like to see my son walk down the hall towards me when I pick him up from school, jump in the shower when we are getting ready to go somewhere or playing school sports with his buddies. These images often play over and over in my head. Five years ago, God blessed us with our second son. As you can imagine, we were truly devastated to learn the news that he too was diagnosed with DMD. He once told us that it makes him so sad that his brother is in a wheelchair. Fighting back the tears, I couldnt help but think that he too might have this difficult road ahead of him. Though our lives are not simple and the road we travel is not easy, we have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ that one day our rainbow will shine again. We love our boys and cherish each and every moment with them. We will continue to pray for a cure for both of our children and all boys affected by DMD so that no one will ever again have to feel pain of these words written in this letter God bless. Amen and heres to the cure being discovered ASAP and in the meantime there is the hope of stemming the diseases progress with developments like Dr. Rhodes VECTTOR machine that utilizes electrical stimulation of precise areas of the body. Glenns example Of her late son, who was the impetus for the event that grew into the Wings for Life fundraiser, Mikulak told us, Glenn touched everyone who met him with his ability to be positive and happy while facing such an unfair fate. The Band of Unknown Origin enters a light of unknown origin as a dreamer and a doer. He will be remembered for his courage and will continue to be an inspiration. Truck driver killed in I-66 collision near 522 interchange

By Roger Bianchini Warren County Report A 39-year-old commercial truck driver from West Virginia was killed on Nov. 1 when his tractor trailer loaded with wood rear-ended an empty box truck westbound on I-66 at mile marker six. Mark Sheridan Flinn, 39, of Moorefield, West Virginia, was pronounced dead at the scene. According to Virginia State Police spokesperson Sgt. F.L. Tyler, after Flinns 003 Peterbilt tractor trailer rear-ended a 009 Freightlines box truck in the westbound lane, it went off the right side of the interstate, overturned and caught fire. County fire officials believe the fire was caused by a ruptured fuel tank that may have spilled 50 gallons or more of diesel fuel from Flinns truck, all of which fed the intense and smoky fire visible for miles. All westbound lanes of I-66 were closed from :50 PM to 5:50 PM due to the accident, Tyler said. Trooper F.L. Fiorvanti of the VSPs Kernstown office investigated the accident. No charges against the surviving driver, Romeo Dulceany, 57, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, were initially filed though the investigation continues. Dulceany was essentially uninjured in the collision according to Tyler. A passenger/codriver, Wayne Kelly received minor injuries and was treated at Warren Memorial Hospital and released. Kelly is also a Georgia resident. Tyler could not confirm reports that Flinns truck was traveling considerably faster than the vehicle it struck. Some witnesses believe Flinn was traveling 60 to 70 mph, while the truck he came up on may have been going as slow as 0 mph. Tyler said no information was yet available on details such as whether the front truck was entering the interstate from the Route 5/30 entrance and was yet to come up to speed. The accident occurred at milepost six, about half a mile west of the I-66/5 interchange near the Crooked Run and Riverton Commons Shopping Centers.

the truth I must comment. I have worked my whole career and gained the reputation of being a professional who works well with everyone. The constant to my whole campaign platform was to work together not against! As a result of the election, I have received compliments from other Sheriffs and government officials, congratulating me on the honorable way I had run my campaign. During my campaign, I was the candidate that was gracious in extending a handshake to the Sheriff, in carrying out a civil platform expressing my ideas. And in my ultimate defeat I was the candidate that offered the olive branch to ask that we all work together, never once taking the race personal to the point that I would feel that it would affect me in improving relationships between agencies. It is a fundamental right of any qualified American citizen to run for public office. Was my work against the effort because of this right? I believe I conducted myself with dignity and honor; with constructive opinion but with respect to Sheriff McEathron. Yes, the election is over and I lost. However, I believe winners do not have to keep kicking defeated opponents after the race is over unless they feel thats just minor too! Robbie Seal Front Royal WORM discrimination? Editor: I would like to respond to the recent article written about the Wastewater Treatment plant proposed pilot project. As the owner of W.O.R.M.S., I have been trying to get my own pilot project started since September 010 and have been continuously promised that there is interest by the town councilmen. It is even possible that funding grants may be available and it may cost nothing for them to approve my pilot project. However the town has been unwilling to look into this even though it could save the Front Royal taxpayers between $ million to $ million dollars over the next 0 years in savings from the elimination of landfill costs, lower operational costs and a potential revenue stream from a byproduct (vermicastings) that vermis tabilization produces. Where is this unnamed consultant in contacting W.O.R.M.S. to inquire about these potential benefits to the town taxpayers? Something smells rotten to me (and its not the treatment plant). Is it possible that I have been blacklisted by the town councilman for my outspoken support for former Town Manager Michael Graham at an earlier town meeting? Or is it because I have made numerous requests to Mr. Burke as to why the town is spending up to $100,000 more than what it should cost to landfill their present biosolids? (See below). Fiscal year 010 actual costs were $35,000+ yet my calculations indicate that it should only have been $138,17. I have asked for an explanation of the difference numerous times since September 13, 011 with no response as to the reason for this difference. In any event, I believe Front Royal taxpayers deserve an explanation. I dont believe the Front Royal taxpayer should be penalized from receiving a significant savings in their tax bills due to a town council that is more concerned with payback than ensuring its citizens receive the best value for their tax dollars. Whats really astounding is that Mr. Burkes reason for delaying my requested pilot project at an earlier town meeting was that it wasnt an already approved process in Virginia and therefore somehow risky, and that by considering this new technology it might somehow delay upgrading plans that have already been designed. Spending $ million on a BioMag process that has never been done before in Virginia to shave off $500,000 on a $0 million project seems a lot more risky to me; and it certainly seems it would also add a wrinkle to previously designed plans. Worms converting biosolids to clean, pathogen free fertilizer without needing a lot of expensive, energy dependent, technologically complicated machinery seems just as worthy an idea to look into if it would be more environmentally friendly, save energy, and save up to $ million dollars over the next 0 years. So why is this pilot project being delayed? Jerry Scholder W.O.R.M.S. (Worms Operating to Reduce Municipal Sludge) Life down under Dear Managing Editor: In regards to Mr. Hartsells latest missive, I offer the following response, with sincere apologies to Steven Spielberg and Roy Scheider, producer and actor, respectively, of the 1975 blockbuster, thriller-movie Jaws: WERE GOING TO NEED A BIGGER ROCK! Staige Miller, Jr. Warren County

Whos a nuisance? I would like to ask you, my fellow citizens, to read and consider the following: I have neighbors who have taken to calling the police if they hear my dog barking in my backyard. My dog is indoors most of the day because I work a full-time job, and goes out in the mornings, afternoons, and a couple of times in the evenings. Like most dogs, she goes outside and does her business, and then runs around the yard watch-dogging and barking at other dogs, cats, etc. She is not left outside for long periods of time, and generally comes in after 15 or 0 minutes. A very nice police officer was sent out to my home on 11/8/11 to answer, for the nd night in a row, a complaint by my neighbors about a barking dog. He was quite humble and polite, and it was clear that he was only doing his job. Both nights, before the police could get to my home, my dog was already back inside and there was no barking to be heard. The officer did not cite me, and in fact, provided me with a copy of the town ordinance pertaining to noisy dogs. It reads as follows: It shall be unlawful and a nuisance for any person to keep, harbor or confine within the town, any dog which shall habitually, continuously, or intermittently make or emit sound or noises of such volume and nature as to interfere unreasonably with or disturb the peace, quiet, comfort, or repose of persons of ordinary sensi-

bilities within the neighborhood in the reasonable use and enjoyment of their property. That being said, I am wondering what constitutes unreasonable interference, and how does one reasonably define persons of ordinary sensibilities? Is it unreasonable for my dog to bark in her own backyard, like most dogs do? Are these people demonstrating ordinary sensibilities by calling the police on a dog who is always back in the house before the police can arrive? Or are these people merely examples of intolerance and hostility, who should maybe not live in a residential neighborhood, but perhaps consider a nice home in the country? (*Of note, these are the same neighbors who called the police about my cat, and mentioned setting traps in their yard because I will not keep her indoors hrs a day.) I have already discussed this issue, in person, with my other neighbors and the unanimous opinion seems to be that these people are being unreasonable and are unnecessarily creating hard feelings. I visited the town police department as well, and discussed this issue with Sergeant Robbie Seal, who also appears to be in agreement that this is more or less a waste of our police officers time and resources. I am now respectfully asking for your opinion. Please mail responses to the address below, and I will consider submitting a follow-up to this letter, based upon your responses. Thank you. Renee McDaniel 111 Adams Ave Front Royal, VA 630 (Managing editors note: may I be the first to reply: as a dog and cat owner who lives in a friendly neighborhood where normal domesticated animal behavior is tolerated, we suggest that if the situation is accurately described, the complaining neighbor lighten up before they are labeled the neighborhood nuisance.) Minor issues? Dear Editor, I felt the need to express some dismay over comments made by Sheriff McEathron in your last edition concerning the county elections outcome as well as clarify my position during my campaign run as the opponent. To say that my issue of both departments not working together is a minor one and that anytime you have someone from an agency that is within your jurisdiction run against you it causes a lot of tension and makes it difficult to improve the relationship when they constantly work against the effort is so far from

But a lifes legacy of giving to a community and its youth lives on
marriage, the birth and raising of his children ... his faith, his vocation as a teacher, coach, and administrator. Having grandchildren, being a mentor...being a friend...being a husband, being a father...being a grandfather and yes being a coach. We all in this gathering and beyond these walls have been influenced by Sweeney; we all have a Sweeney story to tell [and] through these stories and lessons we keep an icon, Sweeney Shiflett, alive and we pass on to the next generation all that is good, Smith said. When you think about it, our lives are relatively short in the whole scheme of things. Whether we are involved in impacting others for only a short period or an extended amount of years, the time we have available to impact people is relatively short. Our lives are symbolized by the dash between the day we were born and the day we pass. It is very short. Therefore, it is imperative that we follow the example of Sweeney and invest our time wisely and determine what we will do with the short dash that has been given to us. What legacy will you leave behind? As mentioned earlier, to most of us Sweeney was known as Coach Shiflett. But I doubt today if anyone can remember his win-loss record; but I bet you can remember the relationship you had with him - these are good things, the people who care about you most will not really care whether your wins outnumbered your losses. They will talk about what kind of person you were and the type

File photo of Sweeney Shiflett and his wife Helen, who passed within about a week of her husband. By Roger Bianchini Warren County Report Off the local sports beat for years and without a staff sportswriter at this time I was late to learn of the passing of Lawrence Sweeney Shiflett. But when I heard the news a rush of memories of an important part of my quarter century here flooded by. Sweeney was still athletic director at Warren County High School when I began stringing sports at The Front Royal News in a late career move toward full-time journalism. Despite my being a newcomer he was always engaging, friendly and helpful in pointing out leads for sports features and connecting the dots between the present I was covering and the past it was connected to. As we moved on, me from one of the last vestiges of purity in human endeavor youth athletics into the less than pure world of local politics; and Sweeney into the twilight years of retirement, wed occasionally cross paths, sometimes at Hall of Fame events named in his honor. He was always supportive of my newest journalistic endeavors, even if they were somewhat lacking in sports coverage. Ultimately I understood that Sweeneys commitment wasnt just to the youth athletics of his community, but to that community as a whole. Apparently I wasnt the only one who felt that way, as reflected in some of these comments from WCPSs Director of Personnel Buck Smith, former WCHS teacher-coach Bob Mason, Joyce Hamer among others. During his Memorial Service remarks Smith acknowledged messages from some whose lives were touched significantly by Shiflett: Bob Mason, former teacher and coach at Warren County High School, who won two state softball championships with the Wildcats stated, Mr. Shiflett was my professional mentor and with Mrs. Shiflett, they were the most influential people in my professional life. Mr. Shiflett touched many lives and made a difference. His legacy is secure. Joyce Hamer wrote, Sweeneys life touched so many others. Take comfort in knowing that those who have given of themselves to others will live forever in every single heart they have touched. As has been testified, we see that Sweeneys impact on this community has been great and although we mourn his passing as a community, his example of a life dedicated to children will live on for all who knew him or are reminded of him each year when a new group of Warren County graduates are added to the Hall so appropriately named in his honor, Clay Athey concluded. Smith also spoke of the societal changes and events Shiflett lived through that helped shape the man and his life. Born in 197 lets look through his eyes and see over time what the world had to offer and how this shaped the man we often refer to as Coach: The Great Depression, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Fall of the Communist Wall, and the list goes on ... Now the brighter side, his youth, his education, his participation in athletics, his determination, his pure desire to be successful, his

Remember the slogan Virginia is for Lovers? What about drummers? Is Virginia for drummers? Before I can answer that, we need to rewind a few years. Two Christmases ago, my wife bought me a djembe, an African drum. She obviously didnt remember how well I took to the flute she gave me about ten Christmases before that. That didnt work out too well. But the drum intrigued me. Id always liked tapping on things. Maybe this would pan out better than the flute. It couldnt be any worse. But I procrastinated, and like a dormant volcano, that drum sat silently in our house with only an occasional rumble. I never even watched the instructional video that came with it. Several months ago, I decided the time had come for that drum to awaken from its slumber. I signed up for a class. If I was ever going to learn how to play that thing, it wasnt gonna be on my own. Youve heard of self-taught musicians? They have one thing that I dont. Talent. For ten consecutive Tuesdays, for an hour at a time, Id bang on that drum with a bunch of other would be enthusiasts. Kofi, our instructor, was from Africa . He proved that Africa is definitely for drummers. As for Virginia , lets see. As the last class approaches and I look back on my drumming journey, I realize Ive made some important discoveries about myself and my talents. First of all, Im a wuss. You play a djembe with your hands. And if you dont do it right, which I wasnt, it hurts! After the first class, my fingers were sore and tingly. After the second session, they were purple from the bruises. And a bit swollen too. My left index finger was twice the size of my right one. This was not good. Playing the drum with gloves

was not an option, although I considered it. Secondly, and to my dismay, I learned I dont have as much rhythm as I always thought I did. As we sat in a circle learning different drum patterns (e.g. dee dum dee dum, dee dum dee dum), my hands were deeing while my brain was dumming. And the faster we played, the dumber I got. It didnt take me long to ask why I was there. On the drive home, I began doing a costbenefit analysis. At an hour each way, plus the cost of gas, and bruised fingers and hands, plus looking stupid most of the time, was this worth it? Sure, my classmates were nice, and I was having fun wasnt I????? Hmmm. Maybe I should be in the pre-beginner s class. Have you ever sat near someone in church who can sing really well? You almost think you can too. The same holds true for drumming. The closer I sat to Kofi, the better I sounded. But I knew the real truth. When hed stop to hear how we were doing, the noise coming from my drum was nothing like the music that came from his. Hes a great teacher. Im just a bad student. Some of my classmates are pretty good. So yes, there are good drummers from Virginia . I just dont happen to be one of them. Ive always loved music, but I now know for certain where my place is in the musical world. In the audience, not up on the stage. Then again, maybe I just havent found my instrument yet. What about the spoons? How tough could they be? And if Virginia really is for lovers, dont lovers like to spoon? I think Im on to something.

Im very sad about closing down. We loved the town and the business, but now its time to regroup, so everything in the store, including the huge inventory of one-of-a-kind, hand-knotted, wool and silk oriental carpets, will be 65 per cent off until the last day of business.

ronment, and natural beauty of the town, but now that the boys are on their way, all attending universities in Maryland and Virginia, the focus has changed somewhat. He said that his sons were also sad to leave the area because theyve grown up here and have lots of good memories. Tariq has been in the carpet business since graduating from University of the Punjab Government College in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. The first thing his father wanted him to do was to learn from the weavers in the family business. He said that he sat with weavers, not so much to learn to weave, but to learn about the weavers minds, to see and understand their problems, needs, wishes and thinking, so he could do something better for them. I came to know things no one else knew and I thought that the least I could do was help them to a better life, he said. The main reason for my father sending me there was that I should never do anything wrong or to abuse them, he explained, adding, mostly these people talked to each other about hard times. One thing he learned was how

Tariq Khawaja, owner of Tariq Oriental Rugs, Inc., in his showroom with a huge inventory of carpets By Carol Ballard Warren County Report Tariq Khawaja, owner of Tariq Oriental Rugs, Inc., gazed around at his brilliantly colorful carpets and weavings last week. While keeping a positive business-like attitude, he also expressed sadness at finding himself at the end of an era. The showroom at 13 E. Main St. will open and then close its doors for the final time on Dec. 31. It was wonderful being in Front Royal. There are so many caring, honest people and thats what has kept us here for 1 years, he said. But its time to make a change and so the showroom aspect of the business will be ending. Im very sad about closing down. We loved the town and the business, but now its time to regroup, so Im making a generous offer to the community we have lived in for all these years, he said. Everything in the store, including the huge inventory of one-of-a-kind, hand-knotted, wool and silk oriental carpets, will be 65 per cent off until the last day of business. Most of the carpets are from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Persia (Iran) and the Caucasus

The big discount comes from our desire to leave on a positive note, he said, and added, It is very hard on my heart, but I want to take a rest for a few months. Wed like to move to a place that at least reminds me of Front Royal but with a bigger population. Even though it will no longer be on Main Street, the business will continue and the carpet cleaning and repair service will still be available. Prospective, current and former clients may still purchase rugs and can call him on his cell phone for about six months after the showroom closes. I want to keep our clients happy, he said. We will take everything left over to our warehouse, and then we can decide if we want to start a new store, but well sit on our assets and our investment coolly until the economy gets better, he asserted. Tariq and the tool of his trade - a loom much work goes into producing a rug. A lot of things all come together to make up quality. One 8 x10 carpet takes two persons eight to ten months to finish and no two carpets are the same, he said. The weavers have a map of how the carpet must be woven with dots representing how many stitches and what colors to use. At first they follow the map, but after a while, they have it in their heads and dont need it. Also, the finish of a carpet from countries which have a 5,000-yearold carpet-making history is something that cannot be reproduced by a machine or even by Chinese rug makers. Theirs are typically rougher and they cant reproduce the finish that Persian rugs have. China produces the silk but cant make the rugs like Iran, he observed.

Fire interrupts animal shelter Open House

Humane Society announces appointment of new volunteer vet
Both veterinarians have a long history of volunteer service for both rescue organizations and animal shelters in Louisiana, where they practiced in Baton Rouge. According to a newsletter item, they worked in Manassas before migrating to the Shenandoah Valley. HSWC president Denise Eastham greeted past presidents including Peg Goodyear, Carol Goddard and Malcolm Barr, Sr. Eastham said the goals of her new board include: creating a stable environment for both animals and staff; professionalism in all encounters with the public; survive short term financial needs and ensure fiscal sustainability in the long term. We have the resources to make our shelter the best that Shenandoah Valley has to offer and one our community can be proud of. I look to the support of our employees, HSWC members and volunteers, as we walk this new path together, Eastham wrote. A membership drive was announced. Current members were reminded that membership renewals are due on or before Jan. 1, 01. The membership fee helps provide care to approximately ,500 animals each year.

A three-alarm fire, the second in 30 months, sparked a fast and early conclusion to possibly the Front Royal animal shelters most successful Open House in recent years. Fortunately, damage was confined to a laundry dryer in the buildings garage. With the help of volunteers and a full staff already on duty all animals were successfully evacuated, and fire damage was minimal. Fire departments from Linden, Front Royal and Warren County responded to the alarm around PM, Nov. 1. Front Royal Mayor Tim Darr and staffer Michael Kerns were credited with keeping the fire under control until fire personnel arrived. The earlier fire in the summer of 009 also caused minimal damage and was contained by the same three fire departments.

Earlier, a crowd of around 100 people gathered at the shelter for the open house and a raffle drawing. According to the Humane Society of Warren Countys (HSWC) new executive director, Lavenda Denney, a number of adoptions were completed (see accompanying letter of thanks to the public). In her first issue of the Shelter Tails newsletter, distributed to members of HSWC and to the public at the shelter, Denney announced a new supervisory veterinarian has been appointed to work in a voluntary capacity at the shelter. She is Dr. Susanne Hirsch, DVM, who resides in Front Royal and is in practice at the Animal Medical Center in Stephens City. Dr. Hirsch has an identical twin sister, Dr. Rosanne Hirsch, who is in practice with her.

FR Beautification Committee annual awards luncheon

By Leslie Fiddler Warren County Report The Beautification of Front Royal Committee (BFRC) held its annual scholarship and awards luncheon on Wednesday, October 6 at the Front Royal United Methodist Church. Prior to the award presentations guest speaker Marion Lobstein described What the New Flora of Virginia will mean to Gardeners. The BFRC was established in 199 by the Garden Club of Warren County. Its mission is to develop a coordinated effort among community organizations and interested individuals to facilitate the improvement and beautification of community property. Membership expanded to include the Front Royal, South River and Valley Garden Clubs and collaborative relationships were established with the Urban Forest Council and the Warren County Tree Stewards. Mandated to facilitate the implementation of the 30/5 corridor landscape plan development by the University of Virginia; to develop and implement landscape plans for public property along the towns major corridors; to help support the Town of Front Royals Horticulture Plan and support the growth of The Royal Shenandoah Greenway, the BFRC has raised over $175,000 toward its goals. Louise LaBarca described the tree replacement plan on Royal Avenue between Main and 6th Street. The work includes the removal of thirteen Maples which are in decline. They will be replaced with Sweet Gum, Homestead Elms, Sycamores, Scarlet Oaks, and an upright Gingko (uh oh stinko gingko!!). Oaks at the Gazebo and Sunset Red Maples on Commerce Ave. will also be replaced. Why use a variety of trees? A range of species promises increased pest resilience and assures a continuing tree canopy when replacement next becomes necessary. LaBarca also spoke to the wisdom of planting trees in fall rather than spring as fall planting allows trees to better establish themselves before the summer drought. Marion Lobstein then took the floor. She explained that a Flora is a plant compendium covering a geographic area. She said that due to Virginias wide range of soils, climates and altitudes, plus its lack

A Humane thanks
Dear Editor; The Humane Society of Warren County extends its thanks to all of the community members, local businesses, staff and volunteers who helped with our Open House held on Saturday, November 1th. Special thanks to Lowes, Handyman Connection and Warren County trustees who helped us get our facility in order. The over 100 visitors to our shelter enjoyed refreshments and one day only adoption specials. Our raffle winners were Mike LaComb, Tony Lang, Beth Reedy and Don Muthersbaugh. Most importantly, seven pets went to their new furever homes. Towards the end of our celebration, a poorly timed dryer fire broke out in our garage. Our in-house heroes, Mayor Timothy Darr and Michael Kerns, held the fire at bay until the professionals arrived. A quick response from North Warren, Shenandoah Shores, Front Royal and Linden fire departments left us with minimal damage. Staff, volunteers and our Open House guests helped to orderly evacuate all of our animals to safety. For this we are forever grateful. Thank You, Denise Eastham, President of the HSWC Board & Lavenda Denney, Executive Director Julia Wagner Animal Shelter

of glaciations, Virginia has more biological diversity in comparison to land mass than any other state in the union. Curiously, the last Flora Virginicus was published 69 years ago by John Clayton. The upcoming Flora (due in October 01) will identify Virginias 3800 native and naturalized vascular species - ferns, conifers and flowering plants.

Lobstein said that Jamestown settlers began Virginias rich tradition of botanical exploration. She identified plants valuable for colonial trade and medicine such as tobacco, corn, sassafras and trees including dogwood and black locusts. She said that as early as 1608 European settlers carried edible and medicinal plants such as dandelions, mugwort and

creeping charlie to Virginia. Some introduced species coexisted with native plants, becoming naturalized. Others out-compete natives. From a gardening perspective, she continued, because native plants are better suited to the environment they need less water and fertilizer than introduced species once the plants are established. They also support birds, butterflies, pollinators and other wildlife. She explained that native plants can withstand drought better than cultivars. Following Lobsteins talk the 011 Outstanding Landscape Awards were given by Fred Andreae and Darlene Goldman. Winners received gift certificates donated by Lowes, Ramseys Hardware, Southern States, Springtime Garden Center, Stokes Market, Sunflower Cottage and Walmart. received the Man Who Planted Trees Award. Alene was a charter member of Valley Garden Club and a 15 year BFRC member. Jim chaired the Where The Mountains Meet the River committee that produced the visionary walk bike plan in 199. The current walk bike plan, The Royal Shenandoah Greenway, shares many similarities to the earlier plan. The town linked the Shenandoah River to downtown via walk/bike access and improved the Luray boat landing while Eastham was mayor. The Eastham family also donated land adjacent to the boat landing for a park. The meeting concluded with a presentation of sponsored tree records to Patrick Ferris, executive director of the Warren Heritage Society. Ferris stated that the Heritage Societys archive holds the record of all donated trees. LaBarca said that persons interested in sponsoring trees can find information through the Town of Front Royals website.

As the evictions and reactions to those evictions mounted, two lone figures appeared in Front Royal stating solidarity with the 99ers. Bailey told us he was acting in support of the national movement and the national issues of the concentration of great wealth in the hands of a few and a government that is too big and oppressive. He admitted being unable to visit outof-state Occupy sites due to his ongoing probation on past criminal offenses, including graffiti spray painting numerous town buildings and vehicles. Yea, that was pretty dumb of me. It was a lot of anarchy symbol aimed at any authority figure, Bailey said of his adolescent lashing out mostly the sides of town buildings and vehicles though some school and private property was also targeted when he was 19. So six years later is this a sign of growing up and trying to become more constructive in expressing that feeling of distance from, and opposition to authority? Ive always been into politics but back when I spray painted the

By Roger Bianchini Warren County Report Theyre here the nationwide Occupy Wall Street movement that has spread to over 1000 cities nationwide with varying degrees of impact is now in Front Royal, to a small degree. On Thursday morning, Nov. 17th, Justin Michael Bailey, 5, and Dana Payne, 19, appeared near the intersection of North Royal Avenue

and Chester Street sporting signs reading We are the 99% stating solidarity with Occupiers pointing to the 99 percent of Americans who are not corporate billionaires in control of a great proportion of the national wealth, and many believe the American Republic and its political and judicial systems. Like it or not, support it or not my guess is over 99 percent of those reading this are a part of that 99 percent of the American public

not in a position to buy governmental favor. Bailey and Payne appeared on the streets of Front Royal as the two-month anniversary of the occupation of Zuccotti Park in downtown Manhattan approached. That anniversary was met with what appeared to be a coordinated spate of national evictions and arrests in major cities, punctuated by such

police and municipal activities as macing an 8-year-old women in Seattle, kicking and ramming a pregnant woman in the stomach causing her to miscarry, baton beating a past national Poet Laureate who was urging baton-wielding Oakland police to simply use their hands rather than weapons to disperse peaceful protesters, and trashing two months of accumu-

Town reviews Wynns claim of unfounded trash fees

By Roger Bianchini Warren County Report The Town of Front Royal and downtown restaurant Wynns may be headed to court to resolve a dispute over allegations the long-time downtown business was billed over $10,000 for trash services it did not receive. Wynns attorney David Silek served council and staff with a draft lawsuit challenging $10,699 in charges for both an additional blue trash can and a dumpster following the Nov. 1 council meeting. Silek told us he was giving the town time to ponder a compensatory payment or credit for the amount he alleges is owed to his client. According to Town Attorney Doug Napier, in his new post less than a month, council and staff would discuss the Wynns claim during a Nov. 1st closed session. No action or official statement resulted from that meeting. Consequently Silek said he was poised to file the suit on Nov. 3. However in response to a question about the claim, Town Manager Steve Burke said he thought the town had addressed the claim earlier and resolved it with a $,000 payment. With regard to Wynns, the Town is willing to discuss any valid issue that a customer has with our service. To my knowledge, the Town has investigated and addressed this matter. If legal action is contemplated by Mr. Silek, I would refer any comment regarding his concerns to our Town Attorney, Doug Napier, Burke wrote us on Nov. 18. Silek said that while his client accepted the referenced town payment, they do not view the matter as settled. The Town refunded several months ago about $,000, with no rhyme or reason after we refused their settlement offer of the same amount so I am not sure why they sent a check, Silek told us. The refund amounted to about approximately 38 percent of what they owe my client. Silek said town claims that payments by his client above the $,000 figure were voluntary are ludicrous. My client was threatened with termination of electric and water if they didnt pay the town the disputed trash bill. How is that voluntary? Such a position is laughable. What the Town has done to my client is wrong. It is shameful, and frankly cowardly. I think the behavior and actions of the Town in this matter is a prime example of why anybody should avoid the Town of Front Royal if they are considering opening a business. Clearly, the town and its manager are unable to see what is fair or just, and if the town council agrees with this manager, then they too have voted to hurt businesses and more or less have said we will [take advantage] of your business if we have a chance to do so if you locate in Front Royal is this the message Front Royal wants to send to the business community?

Three councilmen say they are poised to run again

Lauder says low turnouts fine Conkey challenges Tederick tactics
I am confident that the Citizens of Front Royal will want to move forward and not look back to a time where the elections of town officials was based on an antiquated policy based on racial and economic status The Federal Elections always have a higher turn out. Even during the mid-term elections you will have a much higher turn out than town elections. I believe that is what concerns The Old Guard they want that small May voter turnout because it is easier to get elected with a much smaller, easy to control turnout than it is with any election held in November. However it wasnt numbers alone that drew the most pointed post-election comments. Those were saved for tactics, not by the candidates themselves, but by one citizen in particular who interjected a personally-hostile tone to the North River campaign in its final days. Of course Mr. Tederick made himself known again at the very last minute, Conkey stated of the Nov. th mass-e-mailed attack on independent North River candidate Victor Tory Failmezger. And I have been told he has offered or threatened Mr. Ratigan, that he will do the same thing to him because I guess Mr. Tederick feels he can say who can run and who cant run. Conkeys reference was to a testy e-mail exchange between Tederick and Tim Ratigan. That exchange involved Ratigans receipt of Tedericks attack on Failmezger at his work e-mail at Human Life International. As Ratigan explained to us and later explained to Tederick after a terse initial reply, his concern was jeopardizing his employers non-profit status by receipt of political endorsements at an HLI work e-mail. But Conkey was direct in pitting his own candidacy, rather than that of others, at the center of his critique of Tederick and his influence on local politics. I intend to run and I fully expect by naming him and calling him out here tonight, to be the [target] of another letter such as he sent out, Conkey said. I guess Ill point out to Mr. Tederick that things are either true or theyre false and if theyre true, theyre true and theyre a hundred percent true. And if its not a hundred percent true, its a lie. And Id be glad to debate him

Battle lines are being drawn for the spring town election, from left, Tom Conkey and Matt Tederick in file photos, and Tim Ratigan listening to discussion at Nov. 14 council meeting.

By Roger Bianchini Warren County Report Three sitting town councilmen facing the end of their terms next year announced they will likely be running for re-election in the spring of 01. During comments at the Nov. 1 Front Royal Town Council meeting, Carson Lauder, Vice-Mayor Chris Holloway and Tom Conkey all indicated that as things now stand they will run for re-election next year.

Holloway may have been buoyed by losing the North River supervisors race by only 18 votes despite have drawn the ire of both local Republicans and Democrats with a late political Party hop. And while Lauder used the low turnout of percent this November to justify the continuation of stand-alone town spring elections averaging between 15 and 19-percent turnouts over the past decade, another councilman and already declared mayoral candidate ques-

tioned both that logic and other aspects of the recent election as they may apply to the May 01 town election. Conkey observed that the great preponderance of uncontested races at both the county and state level this year likely impacted offpresidential year turnout numbers usually holding in the low to mid 30-percent range. Only three of 15 total races at the county and state level were contested this year. And of those three, only one, the sheriff s

race, was a countywide vote. If you werent in either the North River county supervisors district or the 18th State Congressional District of the three state House seats the county is now divided into, there was no contested race other than sheriff to vote in. Declared mayoral candidate Tim Ratigan, who is also a proponent of moving town elections to November, also disagreed with Lauders justification of continuing May elections.

at an open forum [that] standing alongside and sniping at people isnt the right way for this community to come together. This community deserves better than that and this community should stand up and say were not going to accept this because this is not what we are about. Noting that the campaign tone of the three candidates themselves had remained issue oriented and non-personal, Conkey added that he was disappointed two of those candidates, Holloway and Dan Murray, didnt react more aggressively against Tedericks late personal attack on the third candidate in the race. So I guess Im opening myself up for it - but thats fine, bring it on, Conkey said of drawing the ire of former supervisor and long-time local Republican activist Tederick. Conkey concluded that he hoped the town spring voter turnout would be a better one because its going to be exciting. Relative values Later we asked Conkey why he chose to throw down the political gauntlet to Tederick at this time. Matt Tederick has for the past two elections chosen to impose his will on the citizens by publishing letters maligning people he doesnt want elected. These letters are filled with half-truths and partial quotes designed to prove his point even if the whole truth or the full quotes dont support his allegations. During this most recent election, he used part of a quote printed in the Washington Post to prove that Tory was an elitist. The full quote spoke of Torys dedication to recreate one of Thomas Jeffersons homes. When challenged, Mr. Tederick countered with the question How many people build a copy of Jeffersons house? The obvious answer to that question is certainly Not many. Mr. Tedericks response begs the question So what? Why does Mr. Tederick have the right to tell someone what kind of house a person can live in? The issue I have with Mr. Tedericks is not that he has an opinion. My issue with him is with the way he attacks people he views as opponents. He doesnt seem to care who his actions hurt and seems to have no regard for the feelings of the families of those people he designates as his opponents. This is not a war zone. It is our home. We all go to church together and our kids go to school together and play sports together. Someone needs to stand up and say that this sort of behavior isnt acceptable in our community. Mr. Tederick has already said that he doesnt approve of Tim Ratigan as a candidate and that he plans to attack him if he runs for office. I believe that we should openly discuss the issues and elections should be based on the candidates qualifications and their positions on important issues. Ive been told that I shouldnt challenge Matt and his friends but I really believe that we all have the responsibility to make this community as good as it can be. If it werent an election, no one would even consider attacking another member of the community the way he has attacked Tory and Bret (Hrbek, former vice mayor). I just dont think that the fact that we are involved in an election excuses this sort of behavior. If my speaking out opens me to his attack, then so be it. I feel I have a responsibility to my town to speak out when someone is being treated unfairly and unethically. If it costs me an election, thats much cheaper than the cost associated with selling out my friends and my personal ethics. Indeed, its going to be an interesting spring in River City.

Table Manners on Display at Holiday Meals

Dont let your bad manners get you relegated to the kids table this holiday season. Holiday meals always seem to ramp up peoples focus on dining etiquette and table manners, said Pat Pesci, director of the hotel and restaurant management program at Kansas State University. Typically, Americans dont sit down and dine together, Pesci said. People just dont break bread anymore; they multitask. Then at this time of the year, you have all these holidays and the large family meals that go with them. The holiday meal can bring a lot of stressors into one event: family members who dont see each other that often; different age groups; different opinions; uncommon and varied cuisine; and fancier tableware. Pesci said it is important to ask your host if you can assist in any way, and also to ask, rather than assume, where you will be sitting. And once youre seated, its standard to wait until everyone has food before you begin eating, Pesci said. When faced with uncertainty about which of your multiple utensils to use, start at the outside and move in toward the plate. Another pitfall during holiday meals is the conversation. Holiday meals often last an hour or more, Pesci said. And while you should eat slowly, it doesnt take that long to consume food. Because so often we eat in front of the television, many people arent used to carrying on lengthy conversations while eating. Remembering not to talk with your mouth full is one thing. Knowing what to talk about is quite another. Pesci said it is best to avoid topics that might make people uncomfortable, such as politics, religion, sex and controversy. Great conversation starters are more neutral, like sports, weather, professions, travel, movies and where people are from. It is important to get everyone involved, said Pesci. We often miss out on talking and listening to people and finding out about them. Holiday meals are a great time for that. When the meal is finished, its polite to place your napkin to the left of your plate and push your chair in when leaving the table. Finally, one of the most important tips is to never correct someones etiquette at the table. Correcting someone elses manners in a public setting is rude. Thats one of the No. 1 rules, Pesci said.

Eating a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with turkey and mashed potatoes makes consumers less likely to buy on impulse, which might affect their shopping on Black Friday, historically one of the busiest retail shopping days of the year, according to two University of Utah marketing professors. In We Are What We Consume: The Influence of Food Consumption on Consumer Impulsivity, Arul Mishra and Himanshu Mishra show how the types of food consumed during Thanksgiving can influence impulsive choices; for instance whether consumers buy on sales the next day or not. Most of us dont connect what we eat to our subsequent choices, Arul Mishra said. However, our research shows that types of food, such as turkey, make people behave less impulsively. Such people are less likely to buy products available at a discount and will find it easier to restrain their impulsive urges and choices. In other words, if youre looking to spend less this holiday season, eat a good Thanksgiving meal. And what about cutting down on impulse buying the other 364 days of the year? Try protein shakes, which like turkey have high levels of serotonin and also were found to reduce consumers impulses. Given that people consume several types of protein drinks for breakfast, they should be made aware that such drinks can reduce their impulsive responding, Himanshu Mishra said. The authors suggest that if consumers are made aware that serotonin from specific foods can reduce impulsive product choice and responding, they could use this information to modify their behavior.

The directions. se this link - http://mapq.st/oTZP3S - for detailed Town continues to seek cost effective sources of energy provision to compliment our portfolio. Front Royal Town Manager Steve Burke on Town RSVP Brown Construction, bbrown@billbrownconstruction.com Energy split impact of AMP, Standard or 931-433-0639, by October 19.

AMP moves past Standard Energy in solar plans

replacement schedules with AMP itself acting as owner and developer of solar power projects within its membership communities. Gerken reported that the AMP Board of Trustees had directed AMP staff to pursue ownership arrangements for the cooperatives development of behind-the-meter solar installations. In conjunction with those efforts AMP is seeking terms for the sale of Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs). The letter from AMP indicated that they will continue to investigate opportunities for alternative energy projects. The letter indicated that AMP hopes to bring some proposals forward in the near future. The Town continues to seek cost effective sources of energy provision to compliment our portfolio, Front Royal Town Manager Steve Burke said in response to a question about the impact of the changes on the towns potential to develop or purchase solar energy as part of its municipal energy portfolio. In 009-10, Standard Energy grew out of the involvement of original SolAVerde principal Willi Lauterbach and a Northern Virginia finance company TrueCast Capital and Marylands Standard Solar. In mid-009, SolAVerde, essentially investment coordinator Willi Lauterbach and local businessmen Greg Horton (Arctic Air) and Donnie Poe (Poe Construction), brought forward a proposal to add solar panels to county and town government facilities, including schools, as a long-term cost saving and environmentally proactive measure. Approached initially, County Administrator Doug Stanley suggested SolAVerde take the proposal to the town due to the existence of its electric utility. From subsequent discussions with then Town Manager Michael Graham a plan to add solar energy production to the towns energy portfolio was developed. However that plan ran afoul of elements within town council who objected to any move toward solar energy or Standard Energys involvement in such a move. A $30million defamation and interference in a business contract lawsuit filed Footnote

by the local principals of SolAVerde against the town and three councilmen, Lauder, Holloway and Sayre, remains in the court system following an initial ruling centered on sovereign immunity in the towns favor.

On Oct. 1st Lincoln County, Tennessee, announced the commissioning of its first solar-power installation. SolAVerde is partnering in development of that 3-megawatt project with VisSolis and Brown Construction.

By Roger Bianchini Warren County Report An Aug. letter from American Municipal Power President Mark Gerken to members of the municipal power cooperative informed them the partnership between AMP and Standard Energy was terminated earlier that month.

The reason cited was Standards inability to fulfill conditions of its contract with AMP to facilitate solar development within some of AMPs 133 member communities. Gerken stated that any existing schedules for the development of solar energy between AMP and its members was also terminated. AMP will move toward developing

Im a college football fan and theres been a tragedy of despicable things that have happened at Penn State University and we all need to realize when theres sexual abuse of minors that we need to step up to the plate Front Royal Town Councilman Tom Sayre

Are Penn State child abuse woes town business?

Sayre alarmed by Sandusky allegations but remains mum on Euteneuer
representing the content of that conversation regarding quotes published nearly a year and a half earlier. Those quotes involved downtown business peoples reactions to Sayres 010 Candidates Forum comment that he believed the town should focus on creating a second downtown on county land in the 5 North Corridor. As the towns spring 010 election approached candidate Sayre attempted to convince downtown business people he never said any such thing (he did and is on tape doing so) and he is apparently still working that angle. Now on Nov. 1th, Sayre added the child abuse scandal and allegations that have rocked the Penn State football program and its fired coach Joe Paterno and his staff, primarily longtime assistant Jerry Sandusky, to his farreaching perspective on exactly

Rather than the specifics of one case in Pennsylvania, isnt the larger issue the ascendance of a perceived importance of institutions over the real world and the people in it among those entrenched in positions of power within those institutions, we asked.
what is included in the business of the town. Sayre has apparently perfected the art of disguising his rambling, personal agenda commentaries so that he is finished by the time the mayor concludes that his Gentlemens Agreement is again being violated. Mr. Mayor, if I may very, very briefly, Mayor Darr. When Conkey brought up the issue of true or false it kind of hit me Sayre began in comments at the 16:0 mark of the video tape of the Nov. 1 council meeting. What Mr. Conkey had referred to about three minutes earlier was the true and false of campaign tactics employed by Matt Tederick in both the recently completed county and past town elections. As reported elsewhere in this issue, what Conkey said was: I guess Ill point out to Mr. Tederick that things are either true or theyre false. And if theyre true, theyre true and theyre a hundred percent true. And if its not a hundred percent true, its a lie. Okay, hes going to comment on the ethics of political campaigning as it applies to local government, one might have surmised of what Sayre was about to say. WRONG!!! Im a college football fan (uh oh, I, if not Mayor Darr, thought) and theres been a tragedy of despicable things that have happened at Penn State University (despite being an attorney Sayre failed to say alleged to have happened at Penn State pending a conviction or confession) and we all need to realize when theres sexual abuse of minors that we need to step up to the plate you cant let these things go on and do something about it. Sayre appeared to be finished and Vice-Mayor Holloway revisited his unsuccessful bid of the North River supervisors seat and congratulated his winning opponent Dan Murray. Darr then called for his Report of the Mayor but his mayoral shadow Sayre had unfinished business attempting to tie his comments to town business: I was going to mention that sometime in the future, Mr. May-

Ill get with the [police] chief and see if he has any ideas, Darr replied.

cilman of child abuse. Well, it should be reported definitely to the police department, he replied. How hard is that to figure out? Well obviously society can have difficulty figuring out at times to report such child abuse, Sayre answered. Society, we asked. They did up at Penn State, Sayre said, asking if wed read the Pennsylvania grand jury report of the allegations against long-time Penn State assistant coach and Second Mile youth foundation founder Jerry Sandusky. Rather than the specifics of one case in Pennsylvania, isnt the larger issue the ascendance of a perceived importance of institutions over the real world and the people in it among those entrenched in positions of power within those institutions, we asked. The councilman seemed unsure. In the end we were left to wonder why Sayre would seek a local forum now in reaction to events at a college campus in Pennsylvania, rather than in response to an example of sexual predatory behavior and a subsequent sixmonth institutional silence right here in our community. That example was the allegation of sexual abuse of one or more young women during exorcisms conducted by former Human Life International President and Catholic priest Thomas Euteneuer while stationed at HLI in Front Royal. In February from the seclusion the Florida Diocese his bishop relegated him to in August 010, Euteneuer, a man Sayre once championed as a positive spiritual influence on this community and who Sayre in print commented on a personal Mens Night relationship with, admitted to at least one incident of predatory sexual behavior directed at a woman under his spiritual care as a priest. Many Catholics we have spoken to, both local and nationwide, believe Euteneuers confession was self serving and incomplete at best. And we have also been told one woman believed victimized was posted here at some point during that evolving situation. Now theres a basis one directly tied to this community and the institutions in it for a local forum on sexual abuse of both children and adults and indicators it is present where we might least expect it. What do you think, Mr. Sayre?

Hard to figure out Following the meeting we asked Sayre if he really thought it was necessary to hold a public forum on child abuse in reaction to the allegations surrounding the Penn State football program Isnt it pretty obvious what it is and what should be done if it is witnessed, we asked the coun-

Fan Culture, Rape Culture, and the World Joe Paterno made
pain of the exposed not the penitent. Lets go back to John Matko. Matko stood with his signs behind a pair of sunglasses. He wasnt soapboxing, or preaching: just bearing silent witness. It was an admirable act but no one bought him a beer. Instead, beer was poured on his head. His midsection was slapped with an open hand. Expletives were rained upon him. His signs were also kicked to the ground and stomped. As the Washington Times wrote, Abuse flew at Matko from young and old, students and alumni, men and women. No one intervened. No one spoke out against the abuse. One disapproving student said, Not now, man. This is about the football players. And with those nine words, we see the truth about Saturdays enterprise. It was about the football program, not the children. It was morbid theater where people were mourning the death of a jock culture that somewhere along the line, mutated into malignancy. Its a malignancy that de-prioritized rape victims in the name of big-time football. The signs of this malignancy did not emerge overnight. Looking backward, there are moments that speak of the scandals to come. In 003, less than one year after Paterno was told that Sandusky was raping children, he allowed a player accused of rape to suit up and play in a bowl game. Widespread criticism of this move was ignored. In 006, Penn States Orange Bowl opponent, Florida State, sent home linebacker A.J. Nicholson after accusations of sexual assault. Paternos response, in light of recent events, is jaw-dropping. He said, Theres so many people gravitating to these kids. He may not have even known what he was getting into, Nicholson. They knock on the door; somebody may knock on the door; a cute girl knocks on the door. What do you do? Geez. I hope - thank God they dont knock on my door because Id refer them to a couple of other rooms. Joanne Tosti-Vasey, president of Pennsylvanias National Organization for Women in Pennsylvania, was not amused. With chilling unintentional prescience, Tosti-Vasey responded, Allegations of sexual assault should never be taken lightly. Making light of sexual assault sends the message that rape is something to be expected and accepted. They called for Paternos resignation and short of that, asked to dialogue with Paterno and the team. Neither Paterno nor anyone in the power at Penn State accepted the invitation. This is the world Joe Pa made. Its a world where libraries, buildings, and statues bear his name. Its a world where the school endowment now stands at over $1 billion dollars. Its a company town where moral posturing acted as a substitute for actual morality. In such an atmosphere, seeing the players and fans gather to bow their heads and mourn Saturday wasnt touching or somber or anything of the sort. It was just sad. It was sad because they still dont get it. One PSU student, named Emily wrote the following to si.coms Peter King, Truth is, if not for Paternos philanthropy and moral code (until his fatal lapse of judgment), I and thousands of others wouldnt be here right now. If

Media coverage was initially relentless.

By Dave Zirin Reprinted by permission Meet John Matko. John Matko is a 3-year-old Penn State class of 000 alumnus, distraught by the recent revelations that legendary Coach Joe Paterno and those in charge allegedly shielded a serial child rapist: assistant Jerry Sandusky. He was livid that students chose to riot on campus this week, more upset about Paternos dismissal than anything else. He was disgusted that the Board of Trustees decided to go ahead as planned with Saturdays Nebraska game just days after the revelations became public. John Matko felt angry and was compelled to act. He stood outside Saturdays Penn State-Nebraska game in Happy Valley and held up two signs. One read, Put abused kids first. The other said, Dont be fooled, they all knew. Tom Bradley, everyone must go.

[Tom Bradley is the interim head coach.] The response to Matko gives lie to the media portrayal of last Saturdays game. We were told the atmosphere was somber, sad and heart-rending, as the focus returned to the children. The crowd was swathed in blue, because, we were told, that is the color for awareness of child abuse (also the Penn State colors) The team linked arms emerging from the tunnel. They dropped to a knee with their Nebraska opponents at midfield before the game. Once again, broadcasters told us, the players were paying tribute to the victims of child abuse. We were told all of this, and I wish to God it was true. I dont doubt the emotions in Happy Valley are genuine. I dont doubt the searing shock and pain that must be coursing through campus. But this is the pain of self-pity not reflection. Its the

I have added an additional shower curtain bar in my tub. I hang up my towels and washcloths there to air dry, and they are out of sight behind the shower curtain. Its very convenient. A Reader, via email I put out small candy dishes in my home, and I like to keep them filled with goodies throughout the year. When I have little children over, I put them up high and let parents know that they and the children are welcome to have as much as they like. The parents appreciate this, as the children sometimes like to overindulge. D.A. in Rhode Island Unexpected company on the way? Throw clutter in a laundry basket and stash. Clear the sink of dirty dishes, take out the garbage, clean the faucets, sink and mirror in the bathroom most likely to be used and, finally, sweep or vacuum the floors. This should not take long, but these moves will maximize the feeling of cleanliness in your house. Heres another use for a bandanna: in-a-pinch earmuffs. Tie around head and position over cold ears to keep winter winds at bay. Another great tip from M.W. in Saskatchewan, Canada: When traveling, let your host/hostess know of any serious health problems or allergies you may have and what to do in case of an emergency. One great item to have on hand in your pantry: jarred peppers and olives. They can be used to make a quick but sophisticated appetizer, and they add a lot of flavor for their price. They are very stable on the shelf, so you can keep them around just in case. Send your tips to Now Heres a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Natural Disasters and Your Finances

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation puts out a free quarterly newsletter full of useful information. The latest edition of FDIC Consumer News focuses on the financial aspect of recovering from natural disasters. Here are some highlights: Consider having direct deposit so that you dont have to depend on the mail going through if an area has been hit hard, and have an emergency savings fund. 24 Keep records of your personal property and the estimated value (photos included). Store copies of important documents (Social Security card, birth certificates, insurance policies, drivers licenses) and assemble a list of phone and account numbers youll need. Add extra checks and some cash. Store records in waterproof plastic bags that you can grab and take with you in an emergency. Beware using a bank safe deposit box for the copies youll need immediately. Did you know that banks are required to prepare for disasters? Each one must have a plan describing how theyll recover data and continue to serve customers, even when there is no power for long periods of time.

Q:

If disaster strikes, report damage to your insurance company immediately. Dont do any clean up until an adjuster has viewed the property. Keep your receipts. Dont fall for disaster-related scams and there will be plenty of them. Get repair prices in writing, call your consumer-affairs office to see if it has information on anyone approaching you to do work, and get recommendations from friends. Beware those who pretend to be from the government and want you to fill out forms giving your personal financial information. The FDIC site itself is full of good information, including up-to-date reports on bank closings, guarding against online identity theft, finding the best mortgage, bank overdraft programs and tips on understanding certificates of deposit. The newsletters can be accessed online or mailed to you. Go to www. fdic.gov, click on Consumer Protection then Consumer News and Information. If youd like to sign up for alerts, navigate to About FDIC and Email Subscriptions. If you dont have Internet access, you can call the FDIC at 1-877-2753342 (1-877-ASKFDIC) to have the newsletter mailed to you. Prom King Walden Carter and Queen Sadie Spence

By Carol Ballard Warren County Report It was the classic setting for a Senior Prom - a full room of sparkling strings of mini lights, upbeat alternating with slow dance music, and animated groups of gussied up partiers sitting around tables, talking, eating and laughing. But the seniors in this Vegasthemed event were all over 55, and the October 1 Senior Prom at the Front Royal/Warren County Active Living Center were dancing to hits from the 60s and 70s. Tunes like Calendar Girl, Catch a Falling Star and Way down Yonder in New Orleans got them up and rocking and twisting and forming a conga line with King Walden Carter and Queen Sadie Spence looking on with approval. This annual event normally takes place at James Madison University, where students put on the prom for them. But this year, Helen Henry, who is the cook at the center, and some volunteer friends decided to do it here because it was in danger

of being canceled. The cost of gas was too expensive, she said. But as it turned out, that made it even more festive and fun. Because it was held here, more people came. The thought of driving so far usually keeps some of the seniors at home. Maybe they cant ride that long, because the early start at 8:30 in the morning makes it too long of a day or some just dont want to go that far away, Helen speculated.

So she organized it to take place at the center. Since the agency partners with both Shenandoah University and JMU, this year she invited student nurses from Shenandoah to help. They helped make decorations, decorated the room and made up the tables with sparkly tablecloths and centerpieces created by Barbara Allaire, who is the director of the Respite Center. She also made the scepters and crowns for the king and queen. All of this was donated and didnt come out of operating expenses, explained Helen. Jon Wayne, who entertains at most local senior center functions in Warren and surrounding counties and the towns of Stephens City and Winchester, provided a few hours entertainment by singing and joking. He said his computer-based pre-recorded method of making music frees him up from certain problems. I dont perform with bands. With bands in a box I dont have to worry about somebody showing up drunk or arguing over the playlist. Ive been doing this for the last eight to ten years, he said.

Sandy Eaton, who provides transportation for the center as its van chauffeur meals on wheels, was talking to Helen about how much the center has been helped not only by volunteer effort, but also from several local organizations. A lot of people are pulling together here. If everyone does their part, we can make it and well give it our best shot, Sandy said. They mentioned that the local Elks Lodge #38 had contributed food during a food shortage they experienced and have helped out in many other ways over the years. Barbara, who provides respite for families who care for members with Alzheimers disease, talked about how grateful she was to the local Veterans of Foreign Wars #1860 organization. Four years ago, we had nowhere to have the Respite Center and VFW donated a space for us, she said. The organization allowed her and her Alzheimers group to meet there for two years until problems after a flood meant they had to move. Were now at the Senior Center, and we want to thanks them. Well be presenting a plaque to thank

them on October 1, she said. These two ladies we have now who have Alzheimers are unbelievable. Theyre wonderful and smart, said Cindy Palmer, interim president/CEO for the Shenandoah Area Agency on Aging which serves Warren, Frederick, Clarke, Page counties and the City of Winchester. She was on hand to celebrate along with the dancers. This is what were here for, to provide socialization and programming and meals. This center gives people a reason to get up in the morning, she said, This is just like a prom. Many of these people may have never gone to one because they may not have had the chance to finish high school. She went on to say that the seniors, who were usually lined up at the door to go home by this time were having so much fun that no one was moving. And she emphasized how important each one of them is to her. Ive been a part of the SAAA since 1978 and its so sad when we lose someone. Ive spent years and years with them, and when they die, its like losing members of my family, she said.

Marathoners from Front Royal return with medals and T-shirts

All are members of Shenandoah Valley Runners who, as time passes, apparently feel more comfortable with the addition this year of Dr. Busch, a young (35) chiropractor with a practice on John Marshal Highway. All achieved their aim of crossing the finish line last month and were rewarded with a medal and a T-shirt celebrating their accomplishment. Other Warren County athletes similarly rewarded for finishing the grueling test were Catherine LeBlanc, the areas only female competitor; John Killackey, at the youngest runner listed from Front Royal; Nick Natale, 9; Robert LeBlanc, 3, who posted the fastest time (3 hours 1 minutes seconds); and Somer (not a woman?) Roberts, 36. None of the Valley runners we spoke to have pretensions toward winning the annual D.C. marathon. Our ultimate goal is to (pace ourselves) in order to finish, said Eckert, whose 17year-old son is a distance running champion at Skyline High School, probably following in the old mans footsteps. The five we interviewed all tried to get as close as possible to the four-hour mark; Eckart did it (3 hours 51 minutes 8 seconds) with about eight minutes to spare, crediting crowd noise and support for his picking up the tempo

By Malcolm Barr Sr. Warren County Report There may be others who have run faster but there are none prouder than five of Warren Countys 10 011 Marine Corps marathon finishers I enjoyed breakfast with on Front Royals Main Street last week. Michael Hofbauer, 8, of Shenandoah Shores, was the veteran marathoner of the group with four 6-milers behind him:

one in Richmond, the others in Washington, D.C. Bill Powers of Rockland was the oldest of the Front Royal contingent at 55. This was Bills second marathon. Greg Huson, 53, who lives weekdays in McLean and spends his weekends at his part time home on Bowling Green golf course, has run in three, Don Eckert, 9, and Jeremy Busch, youngest in the group at 35, each ran in their first marathon last month.

the last mile or so. There were 150,000 people watching. The race is split into divisions according to age, however, with Eckart, for example, finishing 83 in the popular 35-9 age group. Powers finished 11 in his 55-59 age group. LeBlanc, 3, was the fastest Front Royal runner (3 hours 1 minutes seconds). Called the peoples marathon, the Marine Corps marathon is one of the top five marathons in the country in popularity, and is significant in that unlike most other marathons, New York and Boston for example, the race is for pride and not for purse money. A medal and a T-shirt is all they come out with. Each paid $95 to enter. All use local charity runs (usually 5 miles or so) for practice, as well as to support a cause. Said Busch, who came to the Valley with wife Jenna three years ago from New Jersey via Michigan, and whose comment was echoed by all: Its just one of those things I wanted to do. Powers added that bragging rights was another motivator, as was keeping fit and healthy. The last was most apparent, sit-

Also, all emphasized the support of their families since training to run 6 miles means, for most, thrice-weekly training runs in the early morning hours for most of the rest of the year. Would they encourage others to try their hand at long-distance running? Sure, Eckart said. If we can do it at our age, anyone can do it!

Local author/journalist on the road again

Fulbright grant leads Aumente to Lithuanian university
students in his lecture course for creation of a multimedia website on Health and Environment issues which the students presented as their final course project. It was custom designed for Lithuania and the greater Vilnius region, Aumente said, and the students did a superb job planning its graphic design, editorial content, budget, technology, advertising and marketing strategies. Their theoretical study of new media and Internet wedded professionally with a real life practical challenge they confronted. Aumente was a guest of the Institute of Journalism and the Faculty of Communication at Vilnius University, and his assignment included curriculum development discussions with the institute director, dean, faculty members and staff. The Vilnius journalism program was recently evaluated by a team of outside academics as the European Community creates uniform quality standards across borders. The evaluation results were shared with Aumente by Vilnius for his input over the

Ask Stewart
Dear Stewart, How come there arent more trees in our local shopping center parking lots? Dear Katey, Katey Kerns

car sends into our atmosphere. Planted in the right areas, trees can absorb rain runoff and help prevent flooding. Im sure there is also reduction of sounds and noise from all that nice green leafy material, as well. And, again, people will tend to shop at places that have trees and landscaping. Now, there are challenges for these trees, also. When the parking lot was built, all the good topsoil gets taken away and the entire area is heavily compacted. Parking lots are generally designed to shed water away from them, so the trees may not get the necessary watering. The trees are surrounded by black asphault, which in the summer, gets very hot and can damage the foliage. They can also be good targets for car doors and careless drivers. It has been said that the average tree in this environment has a lifespan of about seven years and you can see why. All is not so bleak, however. Proper design and tree selection will greatly help. If larger tree islands are built instead of postage stamp sized tree pits, the trees have a better chance for developing. Good trees to choose for this type of environment include Hedge Maple, Ginkgo, Goldenrain tree, and Sawtooth Oak, among several others. Other design features would include drainage of water towards the tree islands and proper soil types installed before the trees are planted. You will see newer shopping centers designed with trees and landscaping in mind. This is because municipalities have realized the importance of the green part of designing them. Some of the older shopping areas still have a chance, however. Grants and tree planting programs are available to provide upgrades at very little cost. All it takes is willingness to pursue it and partnership between property owners and local government to get it done. Stewart

Im glad you asked this. Stewart has been thinking the same thing. In past years, the primary requirements in municipal code for shopping centers and parking lots were for how many parking spaces to provide. Trees and shading were secondary thoughts. More recently, studies have shown that shoppers will frequent stores and shopping centers that are well landscaped. Think about the difference in appearance of our Main Street from no trees at all to what we have now. Lets think about the benefits of trees in our shopping areas. Not only can you park your car in the shade, the trees will actually help absorb the pollutants your

The Front Royal/Warren County Tree Steward program began in 1997 with volunteers dedicated to improving the health of trees by providing educational programs, tree planting and care demonstrations, and tree maintenance throughout the community. The group now consists of over 30 active members with several interns working toward becoming certified tree stewards from our annual All About Trees Class. Each month Stewart will answer a question from our readers. Please forward it to Stewart in care of frwctreestewards@comcast.net and we may publish it in a future issue.
