IN 1990, lifelong cyclist Mike Evans decided it was time to live his

dream of opening his own bike shop, when the option of taking early
retirement from his job as local operations manager for the then
Welsh water board came up.
A year after getting the business on the road, son in law Mark Rendell,
whose background was in mechanics and sales, joined him at the
Haverfordwest store in Prendergast. Mike and Mark worked together until
2000 when Mike decided to retire from the business. Mark took ownership,
and has stuck by the Mikes original philosophy of catering for everyone, from
toddlers to experienced racing
cyclists, and treating everyone the
same. Mark says this great service is
what keeps people coming back year
after year and, in some cases,
generation after generation!
At Mikes Bikes they cater for all
your cycling needs. The firm stocks
over 300 bikes at any one time. These
vary from three wheel adult trikes to
mountain bikes, hybrids, carbon road
bikes, BMX bikes, electric bikes,
childrens bikes and scooters. Some of
the brands available are: Giant, Cube,
Mongoose, G.T., We The People,
Dawes, Raleigh and more.
Marks present team
includes mechanic son
Shaun, in addition to
another full time
mechanic and two part
time staff. Together, they
can assist with all aspects
of bike ownership, from
bike fitting for a new bike
to advice on upgrading
your old faithful. Mikes
Bikes can help you make
the right choice. In
addition, they have a wide
range of accessories available,
including helmets, protective and
reflective clothing, lights and
waterproof gear including gloves,
socks, leggings and jackets. They also
stock skates, skateboards, and kids
scooters.
Customer service
is a very important
part of the business
especially when it
comes to bike repair
and maintenance.
Mikes Bikes hire bikes,
trailers, tag-a-longs and child seats
from March through to October, most of the
hire is to people cycling the Brunel trail
which has been an excellent addition to
local attractions. In 2011, Mikes Bikes staff
were the official mechanics for the Iron
Man Wales triathlon, and will be resuming
the role again next year, as well as assisting
with the Long Course Weekend for the
third year running in June 2012.
Mikes Bikes also sponsors young local
rider Luke Cornish, who has competed
both locally and nationally, participating in
the annual Junior Tour of Wales for a
second time this year.
Mark says that at this time of year you can book your Christmas bikes a
deposit secures them. All Christmas bikes come fully assembled and safety
checked by qualified mechanics with a free service to follow in the new year.
No bikes are sold in boxes, once you order you can arrange to collect the
bikes closer to the big day! Any accessories purchased can be fitted before
you collect.
When it first opened 21 years ago, Mikes Bikes gave away free
t-shirts with every purchase an offer which was immensely popular,
especially with pupils at the local secondary school, many of whom adopted it
as their unofficial sports kit!
