WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN PERMUTATION &
COMBINATION?
 In permutation, order is important. In
combination, only selection is important –
order is not important.
 Suppose you have to select 3 of your
friends for party = combination will apply –
as it hardly matters as to who is no. 1 or no.
2 or no.3
 If you are asked to form numbers from 1,2,3
permutation will apply, as 123 is different
from 321.

How many 4 digit numbers can you
form from 1,3,4,5 – using each digit
only once?
 This is example of permutation.
 Solution: 4 p 4

 It is written as 4! Divided by (4-4)!

 4! = 4*3*2*1

 4*3*2*1 / (4-4)!

 0! = 1.

 Thus answer is 24 answer.

the word FAILURE that new words
are formed with all the letters,
however, vowels are always
together?
 There are 4 vowels. We treat them as one.
Now we have FLR as other letters. We have
4 letters in all (FLR and Vowels). They can
be arranged in 4! (4P4) ways = 24. 4 vowels
can be arranged among themselves in 4!
Ways so they can be arranged in 24 ways.
 Total ways are 24*24 = 576 answer.

new words from all the letters of
DAUGHTER, where vowels occupy
odd positions?

 There are 3 vowels. And 4 odd positions.

So we have to use one consonant also for
these 4 positions. Thus we have 4 letters
for 4 odd positions which give us 4! = 24.
 Now we have 4 even position left. Thus we
have 4! Options. The total number of
options are 24*24 = 576 answer.
 Alternatively, 3! * (5!-4!) = 6*96 = 576
answer.

 Total number of letters that can be formed
is 3! = 3*2*1 = 6.
 6/3 = 2 every letter comes twice
 Every letter will occupy a position 2 times.
(thus 3+2+1 = 6 *2 = 12.
 Each position will have 12 as total. 12 for
last, 12 for 10th and 12 for 100th position.
Shortcut = We can multiply 12 with 111 to
get the answer: 1332 answer.
