Verbs –
The intransitive verb expresses a solo action, but the transitive verb is for an action that
will been done by someone else. ***Better verb chart on page 7
Miokuru = to see off
Mamoru = to keep
Motsu = to hold, to last
Iu = to say
Miru = to watch
Sageru = to turn down (ie: turn down the volume)
Hakaru = to measure, survey or weigh (as in options)
Esa = feed
Hoshii = to want
Iru = need
Shinu = to die
Yaru = to give
Deri = to get out
Shoujiru = to produce, generate
Rokuga suru = to record
Suru = to do
Otosu = to remove
Tomeru = to stop, to turn off
Shimeru = to tie
Hazusu = to untie/take off
Buyou = dance; dancing
Utaiageru = to sing at the top of one’s voice (to express one’s feelings fully)
Kuchizusamu = To hum or sing to oneself

Tsutsuaru = (with masu stem) to be doing; to be in the process of doing
Ouen = aid; assistance; help; reinforcement;
Tsukaikata = way to use something; treatment; management (of help)
Shouganai = cannot help

Adjectives (keiyoushi)
Utsukushi = Beautiful
Ganguro – dark/tan/black face
Kinpatsu – golden-haired

Aikurushii = adorable
Miryoku-teki = attractive
Kirei = pretty
Saiwai = Happiness

Subarashii = magnificent; wonderful
Obaa = over, exceeding, exaggeration
Michitariru = to be content; to have enough; to be happy; to be sufficient; to be
Sugoi = terrible OR terrific (to a great extent)
Gu = foolish, silly
Tawainai = absurd, childish
Nurui = Lukewarm, tepid
Muchuu = fun, ecstasy
Hontouni = really, truly
Jouzu = skillful
Sokkuri = entirely, just like, splitting image
Hoshii = wanted; wished for; in need of; desired
Mujin/bujin = lack of help; unmanned; uninhabited
Yasashi = kind (person), gentle (wind), easy (test), etc… depends on context.
Oishi = delicious, tasty, savory
Kuyashi = vexing, mortifying, disappointing, regrettable
Hidoi = cruel, rough, harsh, unfair, inhuman, merciless, outrageous
Urasai! = noisy, annoying
Itai = painful, hard to bear
Yowai = weak, feeble, fragile
Tsuyoi = strong, tough, mighty
Muda = useless, fruitless, futile, ineffective, done in vain
Kirei = beautiful (It’s beautiful), pretty, clean (ie: clean room)
Hontouni = really, truly
Suteki-na/Suteki = fantastic, wonderful, glorious, splendid, marvelous, brilliant
Hen-na/Hen = strange, odd, funny
Sukoshi = little bit, somewhat (this is really an adverb & goes B4 adj like in Eng.)
Dame-na/ Dame = no-good, don’t (dame tells someone “don’t do it”)
Hitowarai = Something people would laugh at
Zehi = without fail
Kitto = surely, certainly, undoubtedly
Hontouni = really, truly
Jouzu = skillful

Particles + Verb Endings–


Wa – functions as the topic marker (am/is, eg: watashi wa)
Kara = from, out of
Deri = to get out
Ni – links action to direct object (e.g. write letters, buy candy, buy clothes)
Ne = isn't it, aren't you, don't you think so? (ie: Kawaii, ne?)
Desu – ends sentences politely; also means death
Masu – ends sentences politely; also means trout; increase/grow;
Tai = want or would like to do something (suffix on masu stem of verbs)
Tsutsuaru = (with masu stem) to be doing; to be in the process of doing
Da = formal to be
Deshita = former formal to be (aka was)
Okou = to do something in advance for future convenience (with te-form verbs)

Some Phrases
Nihongo de hanashite kudasai. = Please speak in Japanese.
Eigo de hanashite kudasai. = Please speak in English.
Supeingo o hanashimasu ka. = Do you speak Spanish?
Nihongo no jugyou wa tanoshii desu. = The Japanese class is interesting.
Nihon-jin desu ka. = Are you Japanese?
Itadakimasu = I gratefully receive.
Gochisosama deshita = Thanks for the foods
Doushitashimashite = You’re welcome; Don’t mention it.
Youkoso = Welcome!/ Nice to See You!
Matta atta ne. = So we meet again
Dochira he = How are you?
Sumimasen = Excuse me
Asoko ni suwaremasu ka? = Can we sit over there
Otearai wa doko desu ka? = Where is a rest room?
Otearai karite ii desu ka? = Can I use your rest room?
Onaka ga suita = I’m hungry
Chotto ippai. = Let’s have a quick drink.
Onomimono wa nani ni shimasuka? = What do you want to drink?
Kouhii o kudasai = Coffee please
Omedetou – Congratulations
Tanjoubi Omedetou = Happy Birthday
Kekkon Omedetou = Congratulations for your wedding
Otto o miokuru = See my husband off
Daisuki – I love you
Kimi o Nosete = Carrying you
Inu ni esa o yaru = Feed the dog
Ashita shichi-ji ni okiru = I am going to get up at 7 o’clock tomorrow
Shichi-ji ni okoshite = Wake me up at 7.
Tonari no Totoro = My neighbor Totoro
Mezamashi o tomeru = Turn off the alarm clock.
Okite kudasai = Please get up.
Muda deshita wa ne? = It was useless, wasn’t it?
Yamete = Please stop
Dame = Stop! Don’t do it!
Itai! = Ouch!
Junbi dekita? = Ready?
Nandemo = Anything
Itsudemo = Anytime
Watashi wa ima ikitai. = I want to go now.
Watashi wa shitunaisoushoku ni muchuu desu. = I am very excited about interior
design/decorating.
Anata wa tsuyoi hito desu ne? = You are a strong person, aren't you?
konna hidoi koto wo = Terrible thing like this
Urasai! = shut up!
Hontouni, kireina mizu ne! = (It's) really clean water!
Wakarimasen. = I don’t understand.
Wakatta. = I understand
Wakarimasuka? = Do you understand?
Wakarimashita = I understand ; I understood that.
Joudan desho? = You’re kidding, right?
Doushitan? = What’s wrong?
Ii koto ga nai. = I have no good things.
Ikanaide. = Don’t go.
Uchi ni kaeritai. = I want to go home.
Ganbatte = Hold on; Go for it; Keep at it
Kutabare = fuck you!; shove it!; go to hell!; drop dead!
Odaijini = Take care of yourself.
Otsukareyou deshita = You look tired. (tsukareyou for casual)
Yokunereta? = Did you sleep well
Shakito shiro! = Look sharp!
Hora! = Look here!
Chotto yasumou = Let’s take a break
Dono gurai kakaru? = How long will it take?
Sore/Kore o kudasai = (I’ll take) that/this please.
Hakkiri ie nai = Can’t say for sure.
Kitto day o! = It’s a sure thing!
Iikagen ni shite yo = Give me a break
Hidoi! = Terrible!
Osoroshii! = Awful!
Mijime da! = Miserable!
Nante koto da! = Jesus!
Kangaerarenai koto da = Unthinkable
Kare wa omoiyari ga nai =He’s inconsiderate
Nande watashi ga korarenai to ikenai no? = Why do I get blamed?
Monku itta tteshouganai yo = It’s no use complaining.
Sore wa watashi no sekinin ja nai. = It’s not my fault.

Baka mitai = That’s stupid.


Okashi desu ne = How strange
Fushigi ne = So strange/wondrous
Tsukareta. = I’m tired.
Okane nara kashimasen wa yo. = I won’t loan you money.
Kutsu to boushi o katta. = I bought shoes and a hat.
Eigo to nihongo o hanashimasu. = I speak English and Japanese.
Neko to inu to dochira ga suki desu ka? =Which do you like better, cats or dogs?
Tomodachi to eiga ni itta. =I went to a movie with my friend.
Yuki wa raigetsu Ichiro to kekkon shimasu. =Yuki is going to marry Ichiro next
month.
Tsuini orinpikku no kaisai no hi to natta. = At last the opening day of the Olympics has
come.
Bokin wa zenbu de hyakuman-en to natta. = The total amount of donations reached
one million yen.
Onamae to denwa bangou o oshiete kudasai. = Please give me your name and phone
number.
Kibishii shigoto da na. = This is really hard work.
Tanoshikattanda. = It was fun
Shigoto ga owaru to sugu uchi ni kaetta. =I went home as soon as work was
over.
Ano mise ni iku to oishii sushi ga taberareru. = If you go to that restaurant, you
can have great sushi.
Hoshi ga kira kira to kagayaiteiru. = The stars are twinkling.
Kodomotachi wa bata bata to hashirimawatta. = The children ran around
making lots of noise.
Tanaka-san wa ashita kuru kana. = I wonder if Mr. Tanaka will come tomorrow.
Ano hito wa dare kashira. = I wonder who that person is.
Sonna koto o suru na! = Don't do such a thing!
Kyou wa shigoto ni ikitakunai na. = I don't want to go to work today.
Sore wa machigatteiru to omou na. = I think that is wrong.
Sugoi naa. = How great it is!
Mou sukoshi nete itai naa. = I wish I could sleep in a little more.
Ii tenki desu ne. = It's a beautiful day, isn't it?
Mou nakanaide ne. = Please don't cry anymore, okay?
Iku zo. = I'm going! (Zo used mainly by men)
Kore wa omoi zo. = This is heavy, I tell you. (Zo used mainly by men)
Nomi ni ikou ze. = Let's go for a drink! (Ze used ONLY by men or leaders of group
to lower rank/class etc)
Ano eiga wa sugoku yokatta yo. = That movie was very good.
Kare wa tabako o suwanai yo. = He doesn't smoke, you know.
Benkyou shinasai yo! = Study!
Yattaa! = whoopee! Hooray!
Okoranaide yo! = Don't get so angry at me!
Watashi ga suru wa. = I'll do it.
Shiyou ga nai = It can’t be helped
Shou ga nai = It’s inevitable
Shimatta = Damnit
Yamero! = Stop it!
Shikata no nai = No use
Sensei ni kiita hou ga ii to omou wa. = I think it would be better to ask the
teacher.
Hajime kara umaku dekinai no wa atarimae sa. =It's natural (indeed) that
you can't do well when you first start.
Sonna koto wa wakatteiru sa. = I certainly know of such a thing.
Ashita konai no? = Aren't you coming tomorrow?
Doushita no? = What's the matter with you?
Kore jibunde tsukutta no. = I made this myself.
Onaka ga itai no. = I have stomachache.
Watashi wa Mika ga kekkon shita koto o shiranakatta. = I didn't know that
Mika got married
Kuruma ga hoshii desu. = I want a car.
Nihongo ga wakarimasu. = I understand Japanese.
Taro wa gakkou ni ikimashita. = Taro went to school.
Taro ga gakkou ni ikimashita. = Taro is the one who went to school.
Dare ga kimasu ka. = Who is coming?
Yoko ga kimasu. = Yoko is coming.
Osaka ni wa ikimashita ga, Kyoto ni wa ikimasen deshita. = I went to Osaka,
but I didn't go to Kyoto.
Koko de wa tabako o suwanaide kudasai. Please don't smoke here (but you may
smoke there).
Ano hon wa yomimasen deshita. = I didn't read that book (though I read this
one).
Biiru wa nomimasu ga, wain wa nomimasen.=I drink beer, but I don't drink
wine.
Watashi wa gakusei desu. = I am a student. (lit: As for me, I am a student.)
Nihongo wa omoshiroi desu. = Japanese is interesting. (lit: Speaking of
Japanese, it is interesting.)
Ichijikan ni juu-doru haratte kuremasu. = They pay us ten dollars per hour.
Isshukan ni sanjuu-jikan hatarakimasu. = I work 30 hours per week.
Haha ni shikarareta. = I was scolded by my mother.
Tomu ni eigo o oshietemoratta. = I was taught English by Tom.
Hachiji ni ie o demasu. = I leave home at eight o'clock.
Gogatsu mikka ni umaremashita. = I was born on May 3rd.
Eiga o mi ni itta. = I went to see a movie.
Hirugohan o tabe ni uchi ni kaetta. = I went home to eat lunch.
Rainen nihon ni ikimasu. = I'm going to Japan next year.
Kinou ginkou ni ikimashita. = I went to the bank yesterday.
Koko ni namae o kaite kudasai. = Please write your name here.
Kooto o hangaa ni kaketa. = I hung a coat on the hanger.
Isu no ue ni neko ga imasu. = There is a cat on the chair.
Ryoushin wa Osaka ni sunde imasu. = My parents live in Osaka.
Eki de tomodachi ni atta. = I met my friend at the station.
Yoku tomodachi ni tegami o kakimasu. = I often write letters to my friends.
Kare wa watashi ni hon o kuremashita. = He gave me a book.
Fuchuui de kaidan kara ochita. = I fell down the stairs due to carelessness.
Kaze de gakkou o yasunda. = I was absent from school due to a cold.
Kore wa ikura de okuremasu ka. = How much would it cost to send this?
Kono hon o juu-doru de katta. = I bought this book for ten dollars.
Toufu wa daizu de tsukurimasu. = Tofu is made from soybeans.
Kore wa nendo de tsukutta hachi desu. = This is a bowl made of clay.
Ichijikan de ikemasu. = We can get there in an hour.
Isshuukan de dekimasu. = I can do it in a week.
Kore wa sekai de ichiban ookii desu. =This is the biggest in the world.
San-nin de kore o tsukutta. = Three of us made this.
Zenbu de sen-en desu. = They cost 1,000 yen altogether.
Basu de gakkou ni ikimasu. = I go to school by bus.
Depaato de kutsu o katta. = I bought shoes at the department store.
Umi de oyoida. = I swam in the ocean.
Bengoshi no Tanaka-san wa itsumo isogashisou da. = The lawyer, Mr. Tanaka
seems to be busy all the time.
Tomodachi no Keiko-san desu. = This is my friend, Keiko.
yooroppa no kuni no namae = the names of the countries in Europe
Osaka daigaku no nihongo no sensei = a teacher of Japanese at Osaka university
Bijutsu no hon o sagashite imasu. = I am looking for a book on fine arts.
Are wa watashi no (kuruma) desu. = That is mine (my car).
Watashi no ane wa Tokyo ni sunde imasu. = My sister lives in Tokyo.
Kore wa watashi no hon desu. = This is my book.
Hachi-ji ni ie o demasu. = I leave home at eight o'clock.
Kyonen koukou o sotsugyou shimashita=I graduated from high school last year.
Tsugi no kado o magatte kudasai. = Please turn the next corner.
Basu wa toshokan no mae o toorimasu. = The bus passes in front of the library.
Kutsu o kaimashita. = I bought shoes.
Kinou eiga o mimashita. = I watched the movie yesterday.
Kaeru no ko wa kaeru = Like father, like son
Kaeru no ko wa kaeru = I sorta like it.

Ashita hachiji ni yonnin yoyaku shitai no desu ga. = I'd like to make a reservation for
2 people at 8:00 tomorrow.
Kouinya no gotoshi = Time flies like an arrow; time and tide wait for no man; life is
short
Kekkon no koto kangaenai to na = I should start thinking seriously about marriage.
Yakusoku mamotte yo = You should keep your word.
Kono kekkon dongurai motsu kana = I wonder how long this marriage will last.
Katte ni shiro! = Do what you want! (literally do as you please)
Hottoite yo! = Leave me alone!
Urasai na! = Stop bothering me!
Ittai nani ga fuman nanoka itte yo. = Tell me exactly what’s bothering you.
