he new-york historical society, founded in 1804, holds a unique collection of books, manuscripts, graphic materials, decorative objects and works of art.

comprising more than 350,000 books, three million manuscripts, and distinctive collections of maps, photographs, prints and ephemera documenting the history of america from the perspective of new york, the new-york historical societys patricia D. Klingenstein library includes iconic documents, among them are: rufus Kings and John lansings notes on the constitutional convention, authorization for the sale of the louisiana territory signed by napoleon Bonaparte, a manifold copy of Ulysses s. Grants terms of surrender presented to General lee and the here is new york collection of photographs from september 11, 2001 and the days following. it also includes a vast collection of personal papers and archives of individuals and social agencies that have shaped american history. the museums treasures include all 435 preparatory watercolors for John James audubons The Birds of America, one of the nations preeminent collections of hudson river school landscapes including thomas coles iconic five-painting series The Course of Empire and extraordinary examples of fine and decorative arts spanning four centuries. collections are supported by educational outreach and public programs. Fellows will be encouraged to explore the collections and to take advantage of the full diversity offered by new-york historicals resources.

2012-2013 Fellowships at the new-yorK historical society

the new-york historical society offers five fellowships for the 2012-2013 academic year. Designed to encourage and promote the use of its extraordinary collections of primary and secondary sources relating to the history of new york and the nation, the fellowships are open to scholars at various times within their academic careers. Details about residency, stipends and past fellows, as well as application instructions can be found on new-york historicals website at nyhistory.org.

BernarD anD irene schwartz Fellowships
Deadline: January 3, 2012 offered jointly with eugene lang college the new school for liberal arts, two Bernard and irene schwartz Fellowships are open to scholars who will have completed their ph.D. before the end of the 2011-2012 academic year. Fellows will teach one course each semester at eugene lang college and will also carry on research projects in residence at the new-york historical society. these Fellowships carry a stipend of $60,000, plus benefits. please submit one copy of the application plus detailed syllabi for two undergraduate courses to each of the following: fellowships@nyhistory.org and history@newschool.edu.

anDrew w. mellon FoUnDation Fellowships

Deadline: December 15, 2011 two andrew w. mellon Foundation Fellowships will be awarded to candidates who have held a ph.D. for at least two years. research projects may include conversion of dissertations into publishable manuscripts or the initiation of new research, based on the resources of the new-york historical society. the nine-month residency will carry a stipend of $60,000, plus benefits.

national enDowment For the hUmanities Fellowship

Deadline: December 15, 2011 one academic year fellowship supported by the national endowment for the humanities will be offered for research at the new-york historical society. the Fellowship is available to individuals who have completed their formal professional training and have a strong record of accomplishment within their field. there is no restriction relating to age or academic status. Foreign nationals are eligible to apply if they have lived in the United states for at least three years immediately preceding the application deadline. the 10-month residency will carry a stipend of $42,000, plus benefits.
