Address Space Management

Imagine that you are a network engineer given the task of creating an address allocation plan for the network shown on page 2. In this network, your goal is to subnet the Class B address block 172.16.0.0 using the least amount of address space possible to accommodate the network sizes. Start allocations from 172.16.0.0 and align subnets contiguously dont leave unused blocks within your plan. Unallocated space must be at the end of the allocated subnets. In general, use CIDR subnets to create the plan and account for the additional address required by the router interface in each network. Describe the following information: Network assessment information o Assigned address block and CIDR mask o Sum of host and router interface addresses o Total number of subnets o Proposed CIDR subnet size used within the given allocation and the dotted decimal address range from network ID to broadcast ID o Justification of subnet size chosen (i.e. the total number of x addresses in y subnets requires a /z allocation) Each individual subnet o Address range in dotted decimal notation from network ID to broadcast ID o Subnet mask in CIDR notation o IP address for router interface using the first usable address in the subnet o Justification of subnet size chosen (i.e., x hosts would be accommodated by a minimum subnet size of /y) List the remaining unallocated CIDR subnets using the largest possible allocations. Draw a table showing the IP address plan with address boundaries and CIDR masks. The table doesnt have to show blocks in proportional scale, but must be legible. An example table looks like:
172.16.0.127 172.16.0.128 172.16.0.191 172.16.0.192 172.16.0.255

172.16.0.0

172.16.0.0/25 172.16.0.0/24

172.16.0.128/26

172.16.0.192/26

Build the subnetwork system in Packet Tracer using a router with at least eight 10/100BaseT ports and a host PC connecting to each port. The PCs represent each subnet address space as a whole. Assign the hosts with the next available IP address after the router interface IP.

Suggestions: Start by allocating addresses starting from the largest subnet and progressing to the smallest. (Applies to subnets and unallocated space) Make notes on page 2 to plan your allocations.

Network information: 172.16.0.0 /16 976 addresses total: 968 hosts and 8 router interfaces 8 subnets 172.16.0.0 172.16.7.255 /21 The total number of 976 addresses in 8 subnets requires a /21 allocation. This allows a dedicated /22 to be assigned to the largest subnet with 541 addresses (hosts and router interface) and another /22 that can be subnetted for the remaining smaller allocations.
