A. Background 1. What is a Research Proposal? Research proposal is a presentation of idea that researchers have and wish to pursue. The idea is presented in written form which describes in details the future research that one proposes. It is also intended to convince others that the research that one wants to carry out is worthwhile and that the particular person is competent and has detailed work plan to complete it. Research proposal is like a framework of the whole research process and summary of information that will be discussed in the real research. It is written scientifically as it has to follow specific outline (which it will be discussed in the next question). The difference between research proposal and research report is that in research proposal, one needs to discuss the methodology explicitly, the literature review that is extensive but focused, and to include the hypothesis or expected results from the research that the researcher intends to carry out.
2. What is the generic format of a Research Proposal? What is the function of each section? As noted above, research proposal is presentation of idea that is written by research to describe in details the process and purpose of ones future research. It is written scientifically as it must follow specific outline or generic format when writing a research proposal. The generic format and the function of each section will be presented in a table as follows: GENERIC FORMAT Title Abstract FUNCTION A comprehensive yet brief title to indicate the nature of the proposed work. A brief summary of the proposed work which include the research question, the rationale of the study, the hypothesis (if

any), the method and the main findings. It is also to present the essential meaning of the proposal. Background study/ Introduction The main purpose of the introduction is to provide the essential and necessary background information on the study which includes the introduction of the topic, research problem, research question, rationale of the study, hypothesis or theory (if any), and set delimitation of the proposed research. Rationale of the study:- It is to give reasons for the doing the research. Research problem:- The aim is to decide what the researcher wants to study, or evaluate an existing programme, or assess new intervention, etc. Research question:- The aim is to show the necessity and importance of the study. Preliminary Literature Review There are several important functions of literature review which are to:1. Ensure that researcher is not reinventing the wheel. 2. Give credits to those who have laid the groundwork for the research. 3. Demonstrate researchers knowledge of the research problem. 4. Demonstrate researchers understanding of the theoretical and research issues related to the research question. 5. Show the ability to critically evaluate relevant literature information. 6. Indicate the ability to integrate and synthesize the existing literature. 7. Provide new theoretical insights or develops a new model as the conceptual framework of the research. 8. Convince the readers that the proposed research will make a significant and substantial contribution to the literature. (Paul T.P. Research Design
This is to state what kind of research design will the researcher use to produce evidence and data that will answer the research question. (Qualitative/Quantitative)(Case study/Action Research/ etc) This is a very important section as it will tell the researchers plan to tackle the research problem. It will also provide the work plan and describe the activities necessary for the completion of the project. In this section, there is several important information that are needed to be included. Subject for study:- To state whom or what will the researcher study in order to collect data and type of sampling procedure used. Conceptualization and measurement:- To state the key variables in the study and how will them to be defined and measured. State the instruments that will be used, explain the reason of choosing them and declare their validity and reliability. Data collection:- To state the procedure of collecting data for the study, activities involve and period of time to collect data.
Methodology
Time Frame
It is necessary to provide a schedule for the various stages of research. This is to keep the researcher to complete the research in time.
3. The module runs for 12 weeks. How many hours have you allocated per week for the module? What is the rationale for your decision? B. Completed Project Tasks Task 1. Creating Syllabus Design Group Member(s) who took action All group members took action. The problems encountered are the organisation of contents and allocation of time for each session. Action taken in solving the problems is to refer to the format of research proposal and the contents that need to be taught and included in the module. All group members took action. The problem encountered is to decide the generic format. Action taken in solving the problem is to refer to books of research

proposal in various disciplines to come up with a relevant generic format. 3. Collecting samples of research proposals All group members took action. and consent letters The problem encountered is to choose suitable and relevant samples to suit the level of the students. Action taken in solving the problem is discussion among group members by going through the samples. C. Scheduled Project Tasks Task 1. Deciding the genre model of the syllabus. Group Member(s) to took action All group members are to take action. Problem anticipated is comprehension or understanding of the genre model to be applied in syllabus design. Strategy for solving it is reading and discussion with group members. All group members are to take action. Problem anticipated is in deciding contents, lecturers role, teaching materials in each session. Strategy for solving it is adapting important features or elements in our previous studies in genre classes and samples of teaching materials. All group members are to take action. Problem anticipated is the relevance of teaching materials or references. Strategy for solving it is to consult our lecturer.
